The aim of this research was to establish prevalence estimates for aphantasia, hypophantasia, typical imagery ability, and hyperphantasia in a large multi-national cohort. In Study 1, the Vividness of Visual Imagery Questionnaire was completed by 3,049 participants. Results indicated prevalence estimates of 1.2% for aphantasia, 3% for hypophantasia, 89.9% for typical imagery ability, and 5.9% for hyperphantasia. In Study 2, to replicate these findings in a larger sample, the Study 1 data were combined with openly available data from previous prevalence studies to create a total sample of 9,063 participants. Re-analysis of this data confirmed prevalence estimates of 0.9% for aphantasia, 3.3% for hypophantasia, 89.7% for typical imagery ability, and 6.1% for hyperphantasia. These robust and up-to-date estimates provide enhanced clarity to researchers regarding the prevalence of differing visual imagery abilities and provide a platform for future studies exploring the role of visual imagery in various cognitive and behavioral tasks. Informal settlements are a feature of many cities worldwide, yet information about their social and spatial conditions is often limited to what can be obtained from external observation. Remote sensing and landscape photography are used to acquire information about informal settlements, but images taken from the air or at a distance obscure their complexity, advancing a reductionist imaginary of informality in the minds of outsiders. As part of a project in an informal settlement in Johannesburg, this paper explores the potential of 360-degree imagery as a realist form of spatial representation, towards highlighting the diverse spatial forms, contexts, and lived realities of the informal city. Findings demonstrate the benefits of 360-degree imagery in comparison to other spatial and visual representation methods. Findings also reveal the need for more research into the impacts of this technology on viewer perspectives and perceptions, both visual-cognitive and in terms of intersubjectivity and power relations. Past research theorises that eye-closure and associated mental visualisation, which occurs during the design process, may be important for supporting creativity. Despite these claims, little empirical evidence is available about the results of mental recall in design. In response to this knowledge gap, this research reports the results of a protocol analysis of 35 designers' creative processes, to examine the impacts of non-perceptual cognition (NPC) on design process and ideation. The results suggest that NCP events facilitate idea generation in the individual design process, confirming that 'seeing with the mind's eyes' is an important process in designing. In visual-imagery-based brain–computer interface (VI-BCI), there are problems of singleness of imagination task and insufficient description of feature information, which seriously hinder the development and application of VI-BCI technology in the field of restoring communication. In this paper, we design and optimize a multi-character classification scheme based on electroencephalogram (EEG) signals of visual imagery (VI), which is used to classify 29 characters including 26 lowercase English letters and three punctuation marks. Firstly, a new paradigm of randomly presenting characters and including preparation stage is designed to acquire EEG signals and construct a multi-character dataset, which can eliminate the influence between VI tasks. Secondly, tensor data is obtained by the Morlet wavelet transform, and a feature extraction algorithm based on tensor—uncorrelated multilinear principal component analysis is used to extract high-quality features. Finally, three classifiers, namely support vector machine, K-nearest neighbor, and extreme learning machine, are employed for classifying multi-character, and the results are compared. The experimental results demonstrate that, the proposed scheme effectively extracts character features with minimal redundancy, weak correlation, and strong representation capability, and successfully achieves an average classification accuracy 97.59% for 29 characters, surpassing existing research in terms of both accuracy and quantity of classification. The present study designs a new paradigm for acquiring EEG signals of VI, and combines the Morlet wavelet transform and UMPCA algorithm to extract the character features, enabling multi-character classification in various classifiers. Background: Lower urinary tract symptoms (LUTSs) are a common complaint in adult and elderly men with bladder outlet obstruction, and have a considerable impact on their quality of life. Symptoms affect storage, voiding and post micturition stages. Among the latter, a feeling of incomplete emptying is one of the most bothersome for the patients; a condition that in turn contributes to affect urinary urgency, nocturia and frequency. Common recommendations include self-management practices (e.g., control of fluid intake, double-voiding and distraction techniques) to relieve patients' symptoms, whose effectiveness, however, is under debate. Methods: In this report we describe two pioneering procedures to favor bladder residual content voiding in people complaining of LUTS disorders. The first is based on motor imagery and the second on the use of odors. The beneficial effects of Mental imagery techniques on various tasks (e.g., in the treatment of several pathological conditions or as valid mnemonics aids have a long tradition and have received consistently experimental support. Thus, a patient (a 68-year-old Caucasian man) complaining of LUTS was trained to use a motor imagery technique (building up a visual image comprising the bladder, the detrusor muscle and the urethra, and to imagine the detrusor muscle contracting and the flow of urine expelled) for 90 days and two odors (coffee and a lavender scented cleanser) for 10 days, as a trigger for micturition. He was asked to record—immediately after the first morning micturition—the time interval between the first (free) and the second (cued) micturition. Results: Reported data suggest the efficacy of motor imagery in favoring the bladder residual urine voiding in a few minutes (M = 4.75 min.) compared to the control condition, i.e., the baseline of the patient (M = 79.5 min.), while no differences between the odor-based procedures (M 1st odorant = 70.6 min.; M 2nd odorant = 71.1 min) and the latter were observed. Conclusions: A procedure based on an imagery technique may, therefore, be of general value—as a suggested protocol—and accordingly can be applicable to clinical settings. Anticipating the behaviour of moving objects in the physical environment is essential for a wide range of daily actions. This ability is thought to rely on mental simulations and has been shown to involve frontoparietal and early visual areas. Yet, the connectivity patterns between these regions during intuitive physical inference remain largely unknown. In this study, participants underwent fMRI while performing a task requiring them to infer the parabolic trajectory of an occluded ball falling under Newtonian physics, and a control task. Building on our previous research showing that when solving the physical inference task, early visual areas encode task-specific and perception-like information about the inferred trajectory, the present study aimed to (i) identify regions that are functionally coupled with early visual areas during the physical inference task, and (ii) investigate changes in effective connectivity within this network of regions. We found that early visual areas are functionally connected to a set of parietal and premotor regions when inferring occluded trajectories. Using dynamic causal modelling, we show that predicting occluded trajectories is associated with changes in effective connectivity within a parieto-premotor network, which may drive internally generated early visual activity in a top-down fashion. These findings offer new insights into the interaction between early visual and frontoparietal regions during physical inference, contributing to our understanding of the neural mechanisms underlying the ability to predict physical outcomes. Mental imagery differs markedly between people, with research tentatively identifying three categories, namely aphantasia, mid-range imagery, and hyperphantasia. Further, aphantasia poses interesting questions as to how people with low imagery experience reading. Accordingly, we used Latent Profile Analysis (LPA) on a sample of adults (n = 287) to see what distinct imagery profiles exist empirically. Second, we tested different imagery profiles for associations with different reading enjoyment and absorption experiences. The online correlational study asked participants to complete measures including the Vividness of Visual Imagery Questionnaire (VVIQ-2), the Story World Absorption Scale, and a measure of reading enjoyment. LPAs were run to identify imagery profiles and correlations were run with reading enjoyment and absorption. Results of the LPA validate the existence of three profiles. All groups reported moderate to high enjoyment and absorption, however, significant group differences existed between the lowest and highest imagers. Sensorimotor synchronization (SMS) refers to the temporal coordination of an external stimulus with movement. Our previous work revealed that while SMS with visual flashing patterns was less consistent than with auditory or tactile patterns, it was still evident in a sample of nonmusicians. Although previous studies have speculated the potential role of auditory imagery, its contribution to visual SMS performance is not well quantified. Utilizing a synchronization–continuation finger-tapping task with a visual stimulus that included implied motion, we aimed to examine how participants' imagery ability, musicality, and rhythm perception affected SMS performance. We quantified participants' SMS consistency in synchronization (with visual cues) and continuation (without visual cues) phases. Participants also performed a perception task assessing their ability to detect temporal perturbations in the visual rhythm and completed musical ability and imagery questionnaires. Our linear regression model for SMS consistency included the trial phase, self-reported auditory imagery control and musicality, and visual rhythm perception as predictors. Significant effects of trial phase and auditory imagery scores on SMS consistency suggested that participants performed SMS more consistently while the guiding visual stimulus was present and that the higher one's self-reported auditory imagery ability, the better their SMS when continuing with unguided rhythm. One's visual rhythm perception accuracy significantly correlated with SMS consistency during the synchronization phase, and there was no correlation between rhythm perception and auditory imagery control. Overall, our results suggested relatively independent contributions of auditory imagery and visual rhythm perception to SMS with visual rhythm. Public Significance Statement: Existing research predominantly focuses on sensorimotor synchronization (SMS) performance with auditory cues when exploring human propensity for rhythm. However, the significance of SMS linked to visual rhythm cannot be understated, particularly in activities like various sports where it plays a pivotal role. In the present study, while synchronizers' ability to perceive visual rhythm significantly correlated with SMS consistency during the synchronization phase, their self-reported control of auditory imagery significantly correlated with their finger-tapping SMS consistency during the continuation phase of a synchronization–continuation task. Our research contributes to a better understanding of factors that influence SMS performance that can facilitate the further development of SMS training. For example, it is possible that training imagery abilities in young athletes could enhance imagery control as well as SMS performance (Munroe-Chandler et al., 2012). Furthermore, the amalgamation of imagery training and physical exercise can alleviate bradykinesia, a significant and incapacitating symptom of Parkinson's disease (Stern, 2009; Tamir et al., 2007). The pupillary light response was long considered a brainstem reflex, outside of cognitive influence. However, newer findings indicate that pupil dilation (and eye movements) can reflect content held "in mind" with working memory (WM). These findings may reshape understanding of ocular and WM mechanisms, but it is unclear whether the signals are artifactual or functional to WM. Here, we ask whether peripheral and oculomotor WM signals are sensitive to the task-relevance or "attentional state" of WM content. During eye-tracking, human participants saw both dark and bright WM stimuli, then were retroactively cued to the item that would most likely be tested. Critically, we manipulated the attentional priority among items by varying the cue reliability across blocks. We confirmed previous findings that remembering darker items is associated with larger pupils (vs. brighter), and that gaze is biased toward cued item locations. Moreover, we discovered that pupil and eye movement responses were influenced differently by WM item relevance. Feature-specific pupillary effects emerged only for highly prioritized WM items but were eliminated when cues were less reliable, and pupil effects also increased with self-reported visual imagery strength. Conversely, gaze position consistently veered toward the cued item location, regardless of cue reliability. However, biased microsaccades occurred at a higher frequency when cues were more reliable, though only during a limited post-cue time window. Therefore, peripheral sensorimotor processing is sensitive to the task-relevance or functional state of internal WM content, but pupillary and eye movement WM signals show distinct profiles. These results highlight a potential role for early visual processing in maintaining multiple WM content dimensions. NEW & NOTEWORTHY: Here, we found that working memory (WM)-driven ocular inflections—feature-specific pupillary and saccadic biases—were muted for memory items that were less behaviorally relevant. This work illustrates that functionally informative goal signals may extend as early as the sensorimotor periphery, that pupil size may be under more fine-grained control than originally thought, and that ocular signals carry multiple dimensions of cognitively relevant information. This review article explores how metaphors and analogies used throughout urban history can simulate mental imagery to inspire innovation. The study addresses three critical questions using qualitative literature review methods like text data mining and content analysis. The results yielded from the first question showed a link between mental imagery and architectural discourse. The second question yielded the crucial role of metaphor and analogy as literary devices that can enhance mental imagery. The answer to the third question yielded five procedures of how literary devices foster innovation. The discussion found a complex interplay between recalling mental imagery and imagination and using metaphors and analogies. While recognizing their effectiveness in inspiring innovative ideas, the review cautions against oversimplification and cultural biases. The review of literature offers a nuanced understanding of their theoretical and practical foundations, shedding light on their role in shaping architectural mental imagery within urban history narratives.

The inability to visualise was given the name aphantasia in 2015 by Zeman and colleagues. In 2018 we published research showing that fifteen individuals who self-identified as having aphantasia also demonstrated a lack of sensory visual imagery when undergoing the binocular rivalry imagery paradigm, suggesting more than just a metacognitive difference. Here we update these findings with over fifty participants with aphantasia and show that there is evidence for a lack of sensory imagery in aphantasia. How the binocular rivalry paradigm scores relate to the vividness of visual imagery questionnaire (VVIQ) and how aphantasia can be confirmed is discussed.

Many images used in media and advertising employ visual metaphors that provide enjoyment and storytelling. This study employed an image perception questionnaire to evaluate high school students’ image preferences. The results revealed that among the adjectives provided by the researcher, high school students exhibited higher preferences for describing images as creative, symbolic, cultural, artistic, contrasting, serious, exaggerated, and rational imagery. According to the independent sample t-test results, a pronounced gender difference existed in the preference of selection from the ‘Conservative–Creative’ adjective pair to describe images. Additionally, male and female students displayed higher preferences for describing fusion metaphorical images as ‘natural’ and ‘cultural’, respectively. The preferences of students of different genders for metaphorical images were considerably influenced by the conservative, creative, natural, or cultural elements of the images. According to the results of the chi-square test of independence and phi correlation coefficient test, gender exhibited a significant but low correlation with students’ preferences for juxtaposed and replacement metaphorical images. The findings of this study can provide valuable insights for art educators to gain a deeper understanding of gender differences in students’ image assessments and preferences when viewing images, helping them select appropriate visual teaching materials.

This research analyses the image of women in the most listened music videos made by women in reggaeton, a genre known for the sexualization of women. The main purpose is to learn whether female artists recreate those gender stereotypes, or whether they offer alternate discourses. Through the triangulation of the narrative analysis, it has been determined that female reggaeton artists maintain the visual imagery that sexualises women, although almost half of the songs show a new image for women, who enjoy sex as a way to free themselves. Aphantasia and hyperphantasia are recently coined terms that refer to the absence and superabundance of imagery, respectively. Growing evidence indicates that they have distinctive behavioural, physiological, and neural correlates. Aphantasia is associated variably with a reduction in both autobiographical memory and face recognition, as well as with autism and a tendency toward scientific occupations. Imagery in dreams is typically preserved. Despite the profound contrast in subjective experience between aphantasia and hyperphantasia, the effects on everyday functioning are subtle – lack of imagery does not imply lack of imagination. Differences in neural connectivity may explain the existence of these extremes of imagery. The vividness of imagery varies between individuals. However, the existence of people in whom conscious, wakeful imagery is markedly reduced, or absent entirely, was neglected by psychology until the recent coinage of 'aphantasia' to describe this phenomenon. 'Hyperphantasia' denotes the converse – imagery whose vividness rivals perceptual experience. Around 1% and 3% of the population experience extreme aphantasia and hyperphantasia, respectively. Aphantasia runs in families, often affects imagery across several sense modalities, and is variably associated with reduced autobiographical memory, face recognition difficulty, and autism. Visual dreaming is often preserved. Subtypes of extreme imagery appear to be likely but are not yet well defined. Initial results suggest that alterations in connectivity between the frontoparietal and visual networks may provide the neural substrate for visual imagery extremes. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

The authors are both self-described congenital aphantasics, who feel they have never been able to have volitional imagined visual experiences during their waking lives. In addition, Loren has atypical experiences of a number of visual phenomena that involve an extrapolation or integration of visual information across space. In this perspective, we describe Loren's atypical experiences of a number of visual phenomena, and we suggest these ensue because her visual experiences are not strongly shaped by inhibitory feedback or by prior expectations. We describe Loren as having Deep Aphantasia, and Derek as shallow, as for both a paucity of feedback might prevent the generation of imagined visual experiences, but for Loren this additionally seems to disrupt activity at a sufficiently early locus to cause atypical experiences of actual visual inputs. Our purpose in describing these subjective experiences is to alert others to the possibility of there being sub-classes of congenital aphantasia, one of which--Deep Aphantasia, would be characterized by atypical experiences of actual visual inputs. In the modern world, art and culture occupy a special place in the formation of personality and public opinion, determining the importance of the development of art journalism as an integral part of the media. The purpose of the study is to analyse Kazakh and American media materials on the topic of culture and art, taking into account the use of various creative tools and digital approaches. To achieve research goals, the following methods were used: generalization, survey, content analysis, comparative analysis, as well as various works of researchers studying cultural journalism in its various aspects and interpretations. The results of the work determined that the translation of international art journalism experience into the Kazakh media industry plays an important role in enriching the country’s cultural environment and increasing the quality of art historical materials. According to a survey of art-journalistic experts, it was found that, on average, for 90% of respondents, this area has positive development trends and is the basis for the introduction of technological and digital capabilities. However, for the effective functioning of arts journalism, it is worth taking into account a number of challenges that journalists face in the course of their professional activities. Decoding visual information, such as visual imagery and perception, from EEG data can be used to improve understanding of the neural representation of visual information and to provide commands for BCI systems. The appeal of EEG as a neuroimaging tool lies in its high temporal resolution, cost-effectiveness, and portability. Nevertheless, the feasibility of using EEG for visual information decoding remains a subject of ongoing inquiry. In this review, we explore the neural correlates of this visual information, specifically focusing on visual features such as colour, shapes, texture, and also naturalistic whole objects. We begin to examine which visual features can be effectively measured using EEG, taking into account its inherent characteristics, such as its measurement depth, limited spatial resolution, and high temporal resolution. Using a systematic approach, the review provides an in-depth analysis of the current state-of-the-art in EEG-based decoding of visual features for BCI purposes. Finally, we address some potential methodological improvements that can be made to the experimental design in EEG visual information decoding studies, such as palette cleansing, augmentation to bolster dataset size, and fusion of neuroimaging techniques. The retrieval of autobiographical memories involves the construction of mental representations of past personal events. Many researchers examining the processes underlying memory retrieval argue that visual imagery plays a fundamental role. Other researchers, however, have argued that working memory is an integral component involved in memory retrieval. The goal of this study was to resolve these conflicting arguments by comparing the relative contributions of visual imagery and working memory during the retrieval of autobiographical memories in a dual-task paradigm. While following a moving dot, viewing a dynamic visual noise (DVN), or viewing a blank screen, 95 participants recalled their memories and subsequently rated them on different memory characteristics. The results suggest that inhibiting visual imagery by having participants view DVN merely delayed memory retrieval but did not affect the phenomenological quality of the memories retrieved. Taxations to the working memory by having participants follow a moving dot, on the contrary, resulted in only longer retrieval latencies and no reductions in the specificity, vividness, or the emotional intensity of the memories retrieved. Whereas the role of visual imagery during retrieval is clear, future studies could further examine the role of working memory during retrieval by administering a task that is less difficult or by recruiting a larger sample than this study. The results of this study seem to suggest that both visual imagery and working memory play a role during the retrieval of autobiographical memory, but more research needs to be conducted to determine their exact roles. The target review by St. Jacques (2024) suggests that the presence of observer-like perspectives does not necessarily imply memory distortion and offers recommendations to legal practitioners based on empirical research. The commentaries to this review echo these ideas but also highlight that much is still unknown regarding the role of visual perspective in memory. In this reply, I offer novel directions for future research on visual perspective in memory by summarizing the ideas in each commentary. These suggestions point to the importance of future research by investigating the type of perspective, type of memory, retrieval process involved, and type of accuracy/distortion measured. Together, these articles may serve to motivate the next 40 years of research and help to better inform our understanding of visual perspective in memory in applied settings. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Memories are prone to distortions, which have been linked to our unique point of view. Not only do we experience events from a particular visual perspective, we can also retrieve events from one of two perspectives: (a) an own-eyes perspective, from the same viewpoint where the event was initially experienced, and (b) an observer-like perspective, where we might "see" ourselves in the remembered event. The particular visual perspective adopted, as well as the ability to shift between perspectives, is associated with changes in the subjective and objective characteristics of memories, which has led to debate regarding whether the presence of novel perspectives reflects inaccuracies or distortions. In this target article, I will provide an overview of research on visual perspective in memories of events by discussing the circumstances in which adopting an observer-like perspective signals changes in memories that impact their veridicality and the legal applications of eyewitness testimony. General Audience Summary: Much in the same way as we experience the world from our unique perspective, when we remember events from our personal past, we do so from a particular visual perspective. The visual perspective we adopt is like the viewfinder in a camera, which can influence what we see in our mind's eye when retrieving memories. Although we experience the world through the perspective of our own eyes, when we remember, we sometimes adopt an observer-like perspective—like looking at photographs of ourselves. The finding that we use visual perspectives during remembering that differ from how these events were experienced suggests that memories are not accurate records of the past and instead are prone to distortions. Understanding whether visual perspective can be used to determine the malleability of our memories is relevant in situations in which accuracy is important, such as eyewitness testimony. The current review brings together research in memory to answer the question of whether observer-like perspectives reflect inaccuracies. By examining the origin of visual perspective in memories, the existing research indicates that observer-like perspectives can reflect authentic experiences in some circumstances. At the same time, the visual perspective people adopt during remembering can lead to subtle changes in the types of information reported, such as the visual and emotional details people recall. Other research highlights that we can flexibly shift our perspective to adopt novel points of view, which makes our memories more like imagination. Based on this research, the main conclusion is that the presence of observer-like perspectives in memories does not imply that such memories are false, but that shifts in perspective may reflect inaccuracies. To further develop scientific food packaging design methods, providing consumers with more accurate and prompt food packaging information, the article comprehensively analyzed three types of key cues for food packaging information communication: textual information, food imagery and cross-modal correspondence by integrating domestic and international related literature, and pointed out that textual information was more advantageous in the process of conveying information, positive slogans are more influential, and other detailed information would reduce consumer cognitive bias. Text is more suitable for expressing food functions, while pictures are more suitable for expressing sensory appeals. Secondly, package imagery had a significant impact on consumer perception and response, and visual fidelity implied healthier choices. Consumer perceptions of the food on the package will affect their evaluation of the package contents, and the study of cross-modal correspondences is an important path towards a more scientific, specific and precise approach to package design.

Visual imagery, or the mental simulation of visual information from memory, could serve as an effective control paradigm for a brain-computer interface (BCI) due to its ability to directly convey the user’s intention with many natural ways of envisioning an intended action. However, multiple initial investigations into using visual imagery as a BCI control strategies have been unable to fully evaluate the capabilities of true spontaneous visual mental imagery. One major limitation in these prior works is that the target image is typically displayed immediately preceding the imagery period. This paradigm does not capture spontaneous mental imagery as would be necessary in an actual BCI application but something more akin to short-term retention in visual working memory. Results from the present study show that short-term visual imagery following the presentation of a specific target image provides a stronger, more easily classifiable neural signature in EEG than spontaneous visual imagery from long-term memory following an auditory cue for the image. We also show that short-term visual imagery and visual perception share commonalities in the most predictive electrodes and spectral features. However, visual imagery received greater influence from frontal electrodes whereas perception was mostly confined to occipital electrodes. This suggests that visual perception is primarily driven by sensory information whereas visual imagery has greater contributions from areas associated with memory and attention. This work provides the first direct comparison of short-term and long-term visual imagery tasks and provides greater insight into the feasibility of using visual imagery as a BCI control strategy.

People with aphantasia exhibit the inability to voluntarily generate or form mental imagery in their minds. Since the term “aphantasia” was proposed to describe this, it has gained increasing attention from psychiatrists, neuroscientists, and clinicians. Previous studies have mainly focused on the definition, prevalence, and measurement of aphantasia, its impacts on individuals’ cognitive and emotional processing, and theoretical frameworks synthesizing existing findings, which have contributed greatly to our understanding of aphantasia. However, there are still some debates regarding the conclusions derived from existing research and the theories that were constructed from various sources of evidence. Building upon existing endeavors, this systematic review emphasizes that future research is much needed to refine the definition and diagnosis of aphantasia, strengthen empirical investigations at behavioral and neural levels, and, more importantly, develop or update theories. These multiple lines of efforts could lead to a deeper understanding of aphantasia and further guide researchers in future research directions.

It has been suggested that visual images are memorized across brief periods of time by vividly imagining them as if they were still there. In line with this, the contents of both working memory and visual imagery are known to be encoded already in early visual cortex. If these signals in early visual areas were indeed to reflect a combined imagery and memory code, one would predict them to be weaker for individuals with reduced visual imagery vividness. Here, we systematically investigated this question in two groups of participants. Strong and weak imagers were asked to remember images across brief delay periods. We were able to reliably reconstruct the memorized stimuli from early visual cortex during the delay. Importantly, in contrast to the prediction, the quality of reconstruction was equally accurate for both strong and weak imagers. The decodable information also closely reflected behavioral precision in both groups, suggesting it could contribute to behavioral performance, even in the extreme case of completely aphantasic individuals. Posttraumatic stress disorder (PTSD) is characterized by disruptions to cognitive functioning. Two studies were conducted to examine the relevance of military-related PTSD to two cognitive functions – visual working memory and visual imagery. Participants were military personnel who reported their PTSD diagnosis history and completed a self-administered screening tool for PTSD, the PTSD Checklist – Military Version. In Study 1, 138 personnel also completed a memory span task and a 2-back task using colored words in which Stroop interference was introduced via the semantic content of the words. In Study 2, a separate group of 211 personnel completed measures of perceived imagery vividness and spontaneous use of visual imagery. Interference effects on working memory in PTSD-diagnosed military personnel were not replicated. However, ANCOVA and structural equation modelling revealed that PTSD-intrusions were associated with poorer working memory whereas PTSD-arousal was associated with spontaneous use of visual imagery. We interpret these results as evidence that intrusive flashbacks disrupt working memory performance not by limiting memory capacity nor by interfering directly with memory functions such as inhibition, but by adding internal noise in the form of task-irrelevant memories and emotions. Visual imagery appears to be unrelated to these flashbacks but with arousal symptoms of PTSD, perhaps in the form of flashforwards about feared/anticipated threats. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

The authors are both self-described congenital aphantasics, who feel they have never been able to have volitional imagined visual experiences during their waking lives. In addition, Loren has atypical experiences of a number of visual phenomena that involve an extrapolation or integration of visual information across space. In this perspective, we describe Loren’s atypical experiences of a number of visual phenomena, and we suggest these ensue because her visual experiences are not strongly shaped by inhibitory feedback or by prior expectations. We describe Loren as having Deep Aphantasia, and Derek as shallow, as for both a paucity of feedback might prevent the generation of imagined visual experiences, but for Loren this additionally seems to disrupt activity at a sufficiently early locus to cause atypical experiences of actual visual inputs. Our purpose in describing these subjective experiences is to alert others to the possibility of there being sub-classes of congenital aphantasia, one of which—Deep Aphantasia, would be characterized by atypical experiences of actual visual inputs.

Grimm and Buffy the Vampire Slayer have significant connections not only in terms of fictional content and production but also visual imagery. Threshold imagery develops both Buffy and Juliette, who goes from being a woman behind glass to a witch who moves through mirrors and worlds. This pattern exemplifies the importance of visual imagery as an element of meaning in television fantasy—an element that Buffy notably helped to explore and that Grimm further advances.

Abstract Background Increasing numbers of people are living with mild cognitive impairment in later life and seeking therapy to maintain cognition to remain as independent as possible in daily life. Based on a review of the literature, an app-based programme using perceptual-encoding strategies called Enhancing Memory in Daily Life (E-MinD Life) was developed. An expert panel reviewed the programme’s appropriateness for older people with and without mild cognitive impairment. As part of the design process, the feasibility and acceptability of the E-MinD Life programme were then assessed in relation to its use by healthy older adults, with findings informing the application of the programme to older people with mild cognitive impairment in the future. Methods Phase 1: The E-MinD Life programme was reviewed by an expert panel of occupational therapists. Experts rated the programme on a Likert scale and answered open-ended questions in relation to feasibility, clarity, and relevancy. Phase 2 involved field-testing the 9-week programme with a sample of nine healthy older people. Participants rated the acceptability of the programme on a Likert scale questionnaire. Data on recruitment rates and retention, and adherence and duration of sessions were collected to determine the feasibility of the programme. Responses to the Likert scale were analysed using descriptive statistics. Open-ended responses were categorised qualitatively using a constant comparative approach. Results Phase 1: Experts indicated that the E-MinD Life programme was feasible and included relevant activities for community living. Although experts felt that an older user with mild NCD would be able to independently complete the programme, the qualitative analysis suggests formatting changes in future iterations of the programme to enhance visual clarity. Phase 2: All participants completed the 9-week programme. The average number of self-administered sessions attempted over the 9-week period was 13.44 (SD = 6.73) out of 18 scheduled sessions. Overall, most participants found the programme relevant, logical and easy to understand, and perceived it to be effective for functional cognitive problems. Conclusion The E-MinD Life programme shows promise for inclusion into trial designs to determine the effectiveness of the cognitive strategy programme for older people with and without cognitive impairment. Background: Visual imagery has been used to educate healthcare providers, patients, and the lay public on female genital cutting (FGC) typology and reconstructive procedures. However, culturally inclusive, diverse, and anatomically accurate representation of vulvas informed by women possessing lived experience of FGC is lacking. Aim: We sought to apply World Health Organization (WHO) FGC typology to the development of type-specific visual imagery designed by a graphic artist and culturally informed by women with lived experience of FGC alongside a panel of health experts in FGC-related care. Methods: Over a 3-year process, a visual artist created watercolor renderings of vulvas with and without FGC across varying WHO types and subtypes using an iterative community-based approach. Somali women possessing lived experience of FGC were engaged alongside a team of clinician experts in FGC-related care. Women and clinicians provided descriptive input on skin color variation, texture, and skin tone, as well as the visual depiction of actions necessary in conducting a genital examination. Outcomes: A series of vulvar anatomic illustrations depicting WHO FGC typology. Results: FGC types and subtypes are illustrated alongside culturally informed descriptors and clinical pearls to strengthen provider competency in the identification and documentation of FGC WHO typology, as well as facilitate patient education, counseling, shared decision making, and care. Clinical Implications: Ensuring equitable representation of race, gender, age, body type, and ability in medical illustrations may enhance patient education, counseling, and shared decision making in medical and/or surgical care. FGC provides a lens through which the incorporation of patient-informed and culturally relevant imagery and descriptors may enhance provider competency in the care of FGC-affected women and adolescents. Strengths and Limitations: The strengths of this study include the development of visual imagery through an iterative community-based process that engaged women with lived experience of FGC alongside clinicians with expertise in FGC-related care, as well as the representation of historically underrepresented bodies in the anatomical literature. Study limitations include the lack of generalizability to all possible forms or practices of FGC given the focus on one geographically distinct migrant community, as well as the reliance on self-report given the inability to clinically verify FGC status due to the community-based methodology employed. Conclusion: Patient-informed and culturally representative visual imagery of vulvas is essential to the provision of patient-centered sexual health care and education. Illustrations developed through this community-engaged work may inform future development of visual educational content that advances equity in diverse representation of medical illustrations. Language-dependent recall refers to the language-specific retrieval of memories in which the retrieval success depends on the match between the languages of encoding and retrieval. The present study investigated language-dependent recall in terms of memory accuracy, false memory, and episodic memory characteristics in the free recall of fictional stories. We also asked how language-dependent memories were influenced by language proficiency and visual imagery. One hundred and thirty-seven native Turkish (L1) speakers who were second-language learners of English (L2) were divided into four groups in which they read fictional stories and then recalled them: (1) Turkish reading–Turkish recall, (2) English reading–English recall, (3) English reading–Turkish recall, (4) Turkish reading–English recall. Regardless of the match between L1 or L2, accuracy was higher when participants read and recalled the stories in the same language than when they did it in different languages, showing the language-dependent recall effect. Notably, the effect of match or mismatch between encoding and retrieval languages on accuracy did not depend on L2 proficiency and visual imagery. In addition, false memories were salient, particularly for participants who read the stories in L2 but retrieved them in L1. Overall, our findings suggest that accuracy-oriented memory research provides a comprehensive investigation of language-dependent recall, addressing the links of language-dependent memories with accuracy, false memory, and episodic memory characteristics. Visual imagery has a close overlapping relationship with visual perception. Posterior cortical atrophy (PCA) is a neurodegenerative syndrome marked by early impairments in visuospatial processing and visual object recognition. We asked whether PCA would therefore also be marked by deficits in visual imagery, tested using objective forced-choice questionnaires, and whether imagery deficits would be selective for certain properties. We recruited four patients with PCA and a patient with integrative visual agnosia due to bilateral occipitotemporal strokes for comparison. We administered a test battery probing imagery for object shape, size, colour lightness, hue, upper-case letters, lower-case letters, word shape, letter construction, and faces. All subjects showed significant impairments in visual imagery, with imagery for lower-case letters most likely to be spared. We conclude that PCA subjects can show severe deficits in visual imagery. Humans constantly receive massive amounts of information, both perceived from the external environment and imagined from the internal world. To function properly, the brain needs to correctly identify the origin of information being processed. Recent work has suggested common neural substrates for perception and imagery. However, it has remained unclear how the brain differentiates between external and internal experiences with shared neural codes. Here we tested this question in human participants (male and female) by systematically investigating the neural processes underlying the generation and maintenance of visual information from voluntary imagery, veridical perception, and illusion. The inclusion of illusion allowed us to differentiate between objective and subjective internality: while illusion has an objectively internal origin and can be viewed as involuntary imagery, it is also subjectively perceived as having an external origin like perception. Combining fMRI, eye-tracking, multivariate decoding, and encoding approaches, we observed superior orientation representations in parietal cortex during imagery compared with perception, and conversely in early visual cortex. This imagery dominance gradually developed along a posterior-to-anterior cortical hierarchy from early visual to parietal cortex, emerged in the early epoch of imagery and sustained into the delay epoch, and persisted across varied imagined contents. Moreover, representational strength of illusion was more comparable to imagery in early visual cortex, but more comparable to perception in parietal cortex, suggesting content-specific representations in parietal cortex differentiate between subjectively internal and external experiences, as opposed to early visual cortex. In the last six or seven years, aphantasia has received attention from media outlets, television shows, and social networks. This alleged condition, however, has hardly been discussed in the philosophy of mind. In this paper, I assess some of the research conducted in cognitive science and provide, for the first time in the literature, a comprehensive assessment of possible explanations for aphantasia. Specifically, the hypotheses I submit for consideration ascribe the reports of absence of visual imagery to (i) a discrepancy at the level of concepts, (ii) a failure of attentional mechanisms that modulate introspection, (iii) a lack of personal-level access to sub-personal imagistic representations, and (iv) an absence of sub-personal imagistic representations. I conclude that hypotheses (i) and (ii) can be rejected while hypotheses (iii) and (iv) can be accepted as defensible candidates for explaining aphantasia, although the latter is better suited to account for the available evidence in both comparative and absolute terms. This introduction to the special issue "Jewish Dress Through Visual Sources" prompts engagement with visual sources to expand research into the role of dress in the history of perceived minority groups. Drawing on the example of the Jewish people as one of the longest-lasting oppressed groups in history, the text opens by discussing some of the ways in which dress has played a primary role in shaping the social status of Jewish individuals and communities. It then highlights the interconnection between perceptions of dress with its visual imagery. Foregrounding some of the means that imbue dress with social significance and cultural value, it points to the ability of visual sources to offer insights into conditions underrepresented by other types of historical registers. Special attention is given to photographic image-objects as products of a medium that has radically changed—and democratized to a certain degree—how people re/work their identities, and perceive those of others, through dress. After introducing the contributions to the special issue, the text reflects on how the study of dress through engagement with visual sources pertaining to minority groups can transcend existing research approaches and diversify the scope of dress, fashion, and cultural history alike. Aphantasia and prosopagnosia are both rare conditions with impairments in visual cognition. While prosopagnosia refers to a face recognition deficit, aphantasics exhibit a lack of mental imagery. Current object recognition theories propose an interplay of perception and mental representations, making an association between recognition performance and visual imagery plausible. While the literature assumes a link between aphantasia and prosopagnosia, other impairments in aphantasia have been shown to be rather global. Therefore, we assumed that aphantasics do not solely exhibit impairments in face recognition but rather in general visual recognition performance, probably moderated by stimulus complexity. To test this hypothesis, 65 aphantasics were compared to 55 controls in a face recognition task, the Cambridge Face Memory Test, and a corresponding object recognition task, the Cambridge Car Memory Test. In both tasks, aphantasics performed worse than controls, indicating mild recognition deficits without face-specificity. Additional correlations between imagery vividness and performance in both tasks were found, suggesting that visual imagery influences visual recognition not only in imagery extremes. Stimulus complexity produced the expected moderation effect but only for the whole imagery-spectrum and only with face stimuli. Aphantasia--a condition wherein individuals have a reduced or absent construction of voluntary visual imagery--is diagnosed using either the Vividness of Visual Imagery Questionnaire (VVIQ) or self-identification. However, a significant discrepancy exists between the proportions of aphantasia in the populations assessed using these two criteria. It is unclear why the reported proportions differ excessively and what percentage of people cannot form visual imagery. We investigated the replicability of the proportion of people with aphantasia using both criteria in the same population of participants. Therefore, we explored the potential causes of the discrepancy and characteristics of putative aphantasia in terms of multisensory imagery, cognitive style, and face recognition ability. First, we conducted an online sampling study (Study 1: N = 2,871) using the VVIQ, self-identification of a reduction in visual imagery, Questionnaire upon Mental Imagery (QMI), and Verbalizer-Visualizer Questionnaire (VVQ). We found that 3.7 and 12.1% fulfilled the VVIQ and self-identification criteria, respectively, roughly replicating the proportions reported in previous studies. The self-identification criterion--but not the VVIQ criterion--contains items related to face recognition; hence, we suspected that face recognition ability was factor contributing to this discrepancy and conducted another online sampling study (Study 2: N = 774). We found a significant correlation between VVIQ and face recognition ability in the control group with self-identification, but not in the group defined by low VVIQ (VVIQ =32). As the participants in the control group with self-identification tended to exhibit moderately high VVIQ scores but low face recognition ability, we reason that the discrepancy can be partially explained by the contamination of individual differences in face recognition ability. Additional analyses of Study 1 revealed that the aphantasia group included participants who lacked all types of sensory imagery or only visual imagery in multisensory imagery and exhibited a non-specific cognitive style. This study indicates that the VVIQ alone may be insufficient to diagnose individuals who report an inability to form visual imagery. Humans possess an intuitive understanding of the environment's physical properties and dynamics, which allows them to predict the outcomes of physical scenarios and successfully interact with the physical world. This predictive ability is thought to rely on mental simulations and has been shown to involve frontoparietal areas. Here, we investigate whether such mental simulations may be accompanied by visual imagery of the predicted physical scene. We designed an intuitive physical inference task requiring participants to infer the parabolic trajectory of an occluded ball falling in accordance with Newtonian physics. Participants underwent fMRI while (i) performing the physical inference task alternately with a visually matched control task, and (ii) passively observing falling balls depicting the trajectories that had to be inferred during the physical inference task. We found that performing the physical inference task activates early visual areas together with a frontoparietal network when compared with the control task. Using multivariate pattern analysis, we show that these regions contain information specific to the trajectory of the occluded ball (i.e., fall direction), despite the absence of visual inputs. Using a cross‐classification approach, we further show that in early visual areas, trajectory‐specific activity patterns evoked by the physical inference task resemble those evoked by the passive observation of falling balls. Together, our findings suggest that participants simulated the ball trajectory when solving the task, and that the outcome of these simulations may be represented in form of the perceivable sensory consequences in early visual areas. The perception and imagery of landmarks activate similar content‐dependent brain areas, including occipital and temporo‐medial brain regions. However, how these areas interact during visual perception and imagery of scenes, especially when recollecting their spatial location, remains unknown. Here, we combined functional magnetic resonance imaging (fMRI), resting‐state functional connectivity (rs‐fc), and effective connectivity to assess spontaneous fluctuations and task‐induced modulation of signals among regions entailing scene‐processing, the primary visual area and the hippocampus (HC), responsible for the retrieval of stored information. First, we functionally defined the scene‐selective regions, that is, the occipital place area (OPA), the retrosplenial complex (RSC) and the parahippocampal place area (PPA), by using the face/scene localizer, observing that two portions of the PPA—anterior and posterior PPA—were consistently activated in all subjects. Second, the rs‐fc analysis (n = 77) revealed a connectivity pathway similar to the one described in macaques, showing separate connectivity routes linking the anterior PPA with RSC and HC, and the posterior PPA with OPA. Third, we used dynamic causal modelling to evaluate whether the dynamic couplings among these regions differ between perception and imagery of familiar landmarks during a fMRI task (n = 16). We found a positive effect of HC on RSC during the retrieval of imagined places and an effect of occipital regions on both RSC and pPPA during the perception of scenes. Overall, we propose that under similar functional architecture at rest, different neural interactions take place between regions in the occipito‐temporal higher‐level visual cortex and the HC, subserving scene perception and imagery.
