Artificial intelligence (AI) methods attempt to simulate the behavior and the neural activity of the brain. In particular, Convolutional Neural Networks (CNNs) offer state-of-the-art models of the ventral visual stream. Furthermore, no proposed model estimates the distance between objects as a function of the dorsal stream. In this paper, we present a quantitatively accurate model for the visual system. Specifically, we propose a VeDo-Net model that comprises both ventral and dorsal branches. As in the ventral visual stream, our model recognizes objects. The model also locates and estimates the distance between objects as a spatial relationship task performed by the dorsal stream. One application of the proposed model is in the simulation of visual impairments. In this study, however, we show how the proposed model can simulate the occurrence of dorsal stream impairments such as Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD) and cerebral visual impairment (CVI). In the end, we explore the impacts of learning on the recovery of the synaptic disruptions of the dorsal visual stream. Results indicated a direct relationship between the positive and negative changes in the weights of the dorsal stream's last layers and the output of the dorsal stream under an allocentric situation. Living organisms, which are constantly exposed to cyclical variations in their environment, need a high degree of plasticity in their visual system to respond to daily and seasonal fluctuations in lighting conditions. In Drosophila melanogaster, the visual system is a complex tissue comprising different photoreception structures that exhibit daily rhythms in gene expression, cell morphology, and synaptic plasticity, regulated by both the central and peripheral clocks. In this review, we briefly summarize the structure of the circadian clock and the visual system in Drosophila and comprehensively describe circadian oscillations in visual structures, from molecules to behaviors, which are fundamental for the fine‐tuning of visual sensitivity. We also compare some features of the rhythmicity in the visual system with that of the central pacemaker and hypothesize about the differences in the regulatory signals and mechanisms that control these two clocks. Research on the visual system and its development is not only crucial for understanding how we see and interpret the environment from basic visual processing to complex perception but also aids in the development of technologies like virtual reality, augmented reality, and computer vision. In our previous paper, we have proposed a novel biological motion direction detection mechanism. Based on this mechanism, the authors of this paper proposed a learning artificial visual system (AVS) and use it to achieve motion direction detection. The learning AVS consists of two layers: the local visual feature detective neuron layer and the global feature detective neuron layer. For local motion direction detection, we use dendritic neurons to implement local motion direction-detective neurons and use them to extract local motion direction information. Global feature detective neurons are simply implemented by summing the local motion direction-detective neurons in each direction of possible motion. We trained the learning AVS by eliminating unnecessary branches or synapses and keeping only those that are strongly connected to the function of motion direction detection. Computer simulations demonstrate that AVS can learn the correct motion direction of objects with different shapes, size and positions. We compare the performance of AVS with support vector machine (SVM) and traditional convolutional neural networks (CNNs)—LeNet-5 and EfficientNet-B0 (EfN)—in motion direction detection and find that our learning AVS has better recognition accuracy, noise immunity and less demands on size of dataset and learning costs. Introduction Vection is a stationary individual's illusory experience of self-motion. This illusory self-motion is operationally important for aviation, particularly military aviation, since vection is a dramatic example of spatial disorientation (SD), which is an individual's failure to correctly sense the aircraft's position, motion, and/or attitude with respect to the fixed coordinate system of the Earth's surface and its gravitational vertical. Notably, SD is a major cause of fatal aviation mishaps, and the visual system is particularly prone to provoking vection. This article describes the Virtual Reality Vection System (VRVS), which uses computer-controlled virtual reality technology to induce vection under controlled conditions for training, demonstration, testing, and research. Materials and Methods The VRVS enables the precise specification of the number and appearance of visual stimulus elements intended to generate vection, including photorealistic images. The VRVS can present visual stimuli on any OpenXR-capable virtual reality headset. The VRVS currently records 2 types of behavioral responses, button presses to indicate the presence and duration of vection and the voltage of a handheld linear potentiometer to indicate the presence, duration, and magnitude of vection. Results An approved test plan helped guide, organize, document, and validate the VRVS during its development. Under this plan, a pair of tests guided hardware and software development of the VRVS system. Although the first test verified the ability of the VRVS to generate and measure vection, it also demonstrated that the VRVS can quickly manipulate the visual stimuli from one trial to the next so that the VRVS can support complex experimental designs. The second test used these capabilities to verify that the VRVS can characterize vection in a more analytic fashion using a masking paradigm. Specifically, the test assessed whether random stimulus elements injected into the vection-inducing stimulus disrupted vection in a quantifiable fashion. This work opens the door to studies that characterize the necessary and sufficient visual elements for vection-based SD. Discussion The VRVS is currently used to research, develop, test, and evaluate mitigation strategies targeting vection-related SD in degraded visual environments. Similarly, the VRVS is supporting research to develop methods to predict individual differences in visually induced motion sickness susceptibilities. The VRVS is currently being integrated with a precision motor-controlled rotating Barany chair for multisensory studies. It should be noted that since the VRVS was developed to support United States Army Aeromedical Research Laboratory projects, it is an Army product representing government intellectual property and may be freely available to other government institutions. Genetic diseases affecting the retina can result in partial or complete loss of visual function. Leber's congenital amaurosis (LCA) is a rare blinding disease, usually inherited in an autosomally recessive manner, with no cure. Retinal gene therapy has been shown to improve vision in LCA patients caused by mutations in the RPE65 gene (LCA2). However, little is known about how activity in central visual pathways is affected by the disease or by subsequent gene therapy. Functional MRI (fMRI) was used to assess retinal signal transmission in cortical and subcortical visual structures before and 1 year after retinal intervention. The fMRI paradigm consisted of 15-s blocks of flickering (8 Hz) black and white checkerboards interleaved with 15 s of blank (black) screen. Visual activation in the brain was assessed using the general linear model, with multiple comparisons corrected using the false discovery rate method. Response to visual stimulation through untreated eyes of LCA2 patients showed heightened fMRI responses in the superior colliculus and diminished activities in the lateral geniculate nucleus (LGN) compared to controls, indicating a shift in the patients' visual processing towards the retinotectal pathway. Following gene therapy, stimuli presented to the treated eye elicited significantly stronger fMRI responses in the LGN and primary visual cortex, indicating some re-engagement of the geniculostriate pathway (GS) pathway. Across patients, the post-treatment LGN fMRI responses correlated significantly with performance on a clinical test measuring light sensitivity. Our results demonstrate that the low vision observed in LCA2 patients involves a shift in visual processing toward the retinotectal pathway, and that gene therapy partially reinstates visual transmission through the GS pathway. This selective boosting of retinal output through the GS pathway and its correlation to improved visual performance, following several years of degenerative retinal disease, is striking. However, while retinal gene therapy and other ocular interventions have given hope to RPE65 patients, it may take years before development of therapies tailored to treat the diseases in other low vision patients are available. Our demonstration of a shift toward the retinotectal pathway in these patients may spur the development of new tools and rehabilitation strategies to help maximize the use of residual visual abilities and augment experience-dependent plasticity. The development of structural and functional magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) techniques over the decades has led to many studies seeking to identify cerebral abnormalities in amblyopia. The cause of reduced visual acuity and other visual characteristics of this common visual disorder cannot be identified by standard ophthalmological examination. As there are several variants of this disease, with fundamental differences in etiology, it is natural to suggest that there are different types of corresponding abnormalities in the brain. Thus, until a general picture of the pathogenesis of amblyopia is obtained, studies on groups of specially selected patients with similar symptomatologies are very important. The present paper presents a study of school-age children with left-sided anisometropic amblyopia. Structural MRI revealed interhemisphere differences in the thickness of the lateral occipital cortex in these patients, while resting-state functional MRI revealed interhemisphere differences in local hemodynamic signal coherence in Brodmann area 17 and in the functional connectivity of area 17 with areas 18 and 19. The results contribute to the creation of a general MRI database on the pathophysiology of amblyopia, clarify some controversial issues, and indicate the feasibility of using resting-state functional MRI in ophthalmology. Impairment in visual function is common after traumatic brain injury (TBI) in the clinical setting, a phenomenon that translates to pre-clinical animal models as well. In Morris et al. (2021), we reported histological changes following weight-drop-induced TBI in a rodent model including retinal ganglion cell (RGC) loss, decreased electroretinogram (ERG) evoked potential, optic nerve diameter reduction, induced inflammation and gliosis, and loss of myelin accompanied by markedly impaired visual acuity. In this review, we will describe several pre-clinical TBI models that result in injuries to the visual system, indicating that visual function may be impaired following brain injury induced by a number of different injury modalities. This underscores the importance of understanding the role of the visual system and the potential detrimental sequelae to this sensory modality post-TBI. Given that most commonly employed behavioral tests such as the Elevated Plus Maze and Morris Water Maze rely on an intact visual system, interpretation of functional deficits in diffuse models may be confounded by off- target effects on the visual system. Preclinical studies suggest that early exposure to anaesthesia alters the visual system in mice and non-human primates. We investigated whether exposure to general anaesthesia leads to visual attention processing changes in children, which could potentially impact essential life skills, including learning. This was a post hoc analysis of data from the APprentissages EXécutifs et cerveau chez les enfants d'âge scolaire (APEX) cohort study. A total of 24 healthy 9–10-yr-old children who were or were not exposed to general anaesthesia (for surgery) by a mean age of 3.8 (2.6) yr performed a visual attention task to evaluate ability to process either local details or general global visual information. Whether children were distracted by visual interference during global and local information processing was also assessed. Participants included in the analyses (n =12 participants exposed to general anaesthesia and n =12 controls) successfully completed (>90% of correct answers) the trial tasks. Children from both groups were equally distracted by visual interference. However, children who had been exposed to general anaesthesia were more attracted to global visual information than were control children (P =0.03). These findings suggest lasting effects of early-life exposure to general anaesthesia on visuospatial abilities. Further investigations of the mechanisms by which general anaesthesia could have delayed effects on how children perceive their visual environment are needed. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

\nHighlightsStudying pigeons during homing has offered an opportunity to investigate visual–functional brain lateralization in the context of free flying and long distance navigation. In the current study we examine at a high scale of spatial resolution the flight paths of pigeons, which vary with respect to monocular and binocular treatment, as they familiarise themselves with landscape and landmark features during repeated flights home from two locations. The analysis of the flight paths of monocularly occluded pigeons revealed that pigeons using the right eye/left hemisphere visual system were more likely to display more tortuous paths over tracts of 500 m along the flight path home compared to both pigeons using the left eye/right hemisphere visual system and control birds. Accompanying this finding was the observation that pigeons using the right eye/left hemisphere system were more likely to perform flight “loops”, suggesting that, without right hemispheric visual processing, pigeons are more motivated to seek out visual input, behaviourally expanding the now monocularly reduced visual field. Taken together, the data are consistent with a more important role of the left eye/right hemisphere system in processing visual features of the landscape, which may contribute to the construction of the familiar landmark-based map used for navigation. More broadly, our data are consistent with the hypothesis that the right cerebral hemisphere of the avian brain plays a more important role in memorising and using the relational properties of visual stimuli to guide performance on spatial tasks. The unicellular microalga Euglena gracilis has always been considered the ideal alga to investigate photoreceptive responses and systems, and it has been the subject of hundreds of articles. Moreover, because of its detectable photoreceptor, it has been given a key role in the evolution of photoreception, from single and simple cells to complex visual system of higher organisms. In this article, we report the Raman spectra recorded in vivo on photoreceptors of E. gracilis and Bos taurus retina. The almost perfect superimposability (correlation coefficient r = 0.955) of these spectra states that the Euglena possesses a photoreceptor with the same structural characteristic of a vertebrate photoreceptor, i.e. a stack of membrane layers embedding rhodopsin‐like proteins. Raman spectra recorded in vivo on photoreceptors of E. gracilis after hydroxylamine treatment further confirm our findings, which should lead to a reconsideration of most of the scientific literature on algae photoreception and eye evolution. When populations experience different sensory conditions, natural selection may favor sensory system divergence, affecting peripheral structures and/or downstream neural pathways. We characterized the outer eye morphology of sympatric Heliconius butterflies from different forest types and their first-generation reciprocal hybrids to test for adaptive visual system divergence and hybrid disruption. In Panama, Heliconius cydno occurs in closed forests, whereas Heliconius melpomene resides at the forest edge. Among wild individuals, H. cydno has larger eyes than H. melpomene , and there are heritable, habitat-associated differences in the visual brain structures that exceed neutral divergence expectations. Notably, hybrids have intermediate neural phenotypes, suggesting disruption. To test for similar effects in the visual periphery, we reared both species and their hybrids in common garden conditions. We confirm that H. cydno has larger eyes and provide new evidence that this is driven by selection. Hybrid eye morphology is more H. melpomene -like despite body size being intermediate, contrasting with neural trait intermediacy. Overall, our results suggest that eye morphology differences between H. cydno and H. melpomene are adaptive and that hybrids may suffer fitness costs due to a mismatch between the peripheral visual structures and previously described neural traits that could affect visual performance. The cat primary visual cortex (V1) is a cortical area for which we have one of the most detailed estimates of the connection 'weights' (expressed as number of synapses) between different neural populations in different layers (Binzegger et al in J Neurosci 24:8441–8453, 2004). Nevertheless, the majority of excitatory input sources to layer 6, the deepest layer in a local translaminar excitatory feedforward loop, was not accounted for by the known neuron types used to generate the quantitative Binzegger diagram. We aimed to fill this gap by using a retrograde tracer that would label neural cell bodies in and outside V1 that directly connect to layer 6 of V1. We found that more than 80% of labeled neurons projecting to layer 6 were within V1 itself. Our data indicate that a substantial fraction of the missing input is provided by a previously unidentified population of layer 3/4 border neurons, laterally distributed and connecting more strongly to layer 6 than the typical superficial layer pyramidal neurons considered by Binzegger et al. (Binzegger et al in J Neurosci 24:8441–8453, 2004). This layer 3/4 to layer 6 connection may be a parallel route to the layer 3 – layer 5 – layer 6 feedforward pathway, be associated with the fast-conducting, movement-related Y pathway and provide convergent input from distant (5–10 degrees) regions of the visual field. • The calibration problem of the general acupuncture robot is analyzed. • A simultaneous offline calibration method for problems defined with multiple closed kinematic chains is proposed. • A multi-objective optimization model covering all coupling components and constraints is constructed and solved. • A real-world platform with a customized calibration board is built. • The proposed method has higher calibration accuracy and convergence speed. Acupuncture robot is a new-era product combining traditional acupuncture and cutting-edge technology. The calibration of the vision system and the acupuncture mechanism is a crucial prerequisite for humanoid acupuncture control, which has not yet been explored. In this paper, a simultaneous offline calibration method is proposed for acupuncture robots. Analysis reveals that its calibration problem is defined with three closed kinematic chains, while the typical problems cover only a single chain. Decoupling them, a Kronecker product-based method is deduced to access the closed-form rotation component. As opposed to quaternion-based methods, it only experiences linear complexity in sign ambiguity, which can produce a more precise solution in finite time. Further, a simultaneous optimization model that encompasses all components is established, which can be solved with stochastic gradient descent-based methods. It is free of truncation errors and thus has higher calibration accuracy and convergence speed. Besides, the impairment in error propagation between different closed kinematic chains is mitigated compared to step-by-step methods. Finally, simulations and experiments are carried out. Introduction: Exposure to blue light throughout the day plays a key role in maintaining the balance of our biological functions. It has a profound impact on our physical and mental state, including the visual system, and contributes to the regulation of behavior and circadian rhythms. The relationship between light emitted by digital devices, the biological rhythm of the retina and the development of refractive errors has been the subject of research in recent years. Aim of Study: This manuscript aims to investigate the implications of light exposure from digital devices on the visual system and circadian rhytms, with a focus on understanding the associated risks, such as digital eye strain and myopia progression. Additionally, the study evaluates the efficacy of blue light-filtering lenses in mitigating these effects. Material and Methods: The present study is based on literature available in scientific databases such as PubMed, Corchane Library and Google Scholar, using the following keywords ,,Digital devices”; ,, Blue light” ; Digital eye strain” ; Visual system”; ,,Circadian rhythms” Results and conclusions: Despite the prevalent use of blue light-filtering lenses, existing evidence indicates that their effectiveness in improving visual performance or preventing retinal damage is limited. Consequently, the implementation of protective strategies, such as the 20-20-20 rule, combined with appropriate ergonomic practices, is critical in alleviating the ocular strain induced by extended screen exposure.

Motion sickness (MS) is caused by exposure to unfamiliar movements. The theory is that MS is due to a conflict between information perceived by the vestibular, visual, and somatosensory systems. This study examines the role of vision in MS by comparing MS susceptibility among individuals with varying degrees of visual impairments to sighted individuals. We hypothesized that subjects with no perception of light would be less susceptible to MS than less impaired subjects, who would themselves be less susceptible than sighted subjects. To address these, the Motion Sickness Susceptibility Questionnaire (MSSQ1) was administered to 340 subjects (170 visually impaired paired with 170 sighted subjects) to assess their susceptibility to various modes of transport under real conditions. Visually impaired subjects were divided into subgroups according to the presence (partially sighted) or absence (totally blind) of light perception, as well as the period of onset of impairment (congenital or acquired). Totally blind individuals are significantly less susceptible to MS than partially sighted (p = 0.001), and sighted (p < 0.001) subjects, with no difference between partially sighted and sighted subjects (p = 0.526). Additionally, acquired totally blind subjects are less susceptible to MS than congenitally blind subjects (p = 0.038). Thus, despite a lower susceptibility totally blind subjects may still be susceptible to MS. The absence of vision reduces MS susceptibility but does not completely prevent it. This suggests that vision is more a mediator, than an essential condition for MS appearance.

Abstract Background Macular degeneration of the eye is a common cause of blindness and affects 8% of the worldwide human population. In adult cats with bilateral lesions of the central retina, we explored the possibility that motion perception training can limit the associated degradation of the visual system. We evaluated how visual training affects behavioral performance and white matter structure. Recently, we proposed (Kozak et al. in Transl Vis Sci Technol 10:9, 2021) a new motion-acuity test for low vision patients, enabling full visual field functional assessment through simultaneous perception of shape and motion. Here, we integrated this test as the last step of a 10-week motion-perception training. Results Cats were divided into three groups: retinal-lesioned only and two trained groups, retinal-lesioned trained and control trained. The behavioral data revealed that trained cats with retinal lesions were superior in motion tasks, even when the difficulty relied only on acuity. 7 T-MRI scanning was done before and after lesioning at 5 different timepoints, followed by Fixel-Based and Fractional Anisotropy Analysis. In cats with retinal lesions, training resulted in a more localized and reduced percentage decrease in Fixel-Based Analysis metrics in the dLGN, caudate nucleus and hippocampus compared to untrained cats. In motion-sensitive area V5/PMLS, the significant decreases in fiber density were equally strong in retinal-lesioned untrained and trained cats, up to 40% in both groups. The only cortical area with Fractional Anisotropy values not affected by central retinal loss was area V5/PMLS. In other visual ROIs, the Fractional Anisotropy values increased over time in the untrained retinal lesioned group, whereas they decreased in the retinal lesioned trained group and remained at a similar level as in trained controls. Conclusions Overall, our MRI results showed a stabilizing effect of motion training applied soon after central retinal loss induction on white matter structure. We propose that introducing early motion-acuity training for low vision patients, aimed at the intact and active retinal peripheries, may facilitate brain plasticity processes toward better vision.

Horseshoe crabs represent the most ancestral chelicerate lineage characterized by marine ecology and the possession of lateral compound eyes. While considered living fossils, recent studies reported an unusual number of Pax6 genes in the Atlantic horseshoe crab Limulus polyphemus. Pax genes encode ancient metazoan transcription factors, which comprise seven subfamilies. Among these, the members of the Pax6 subfamily confer critical functions in the development of the head, the visual system, and further body plan components. Arthropods are generally characterized by two Pax6 subfamily homologs that were discovered in Drosophila and named eyeless (ey) and twin of eyeless (toy). However, whole genome sequence searches uncovered three homologs of ey and two homologs of toy in L. polyphemus. These numbers are explained by the occurrence of likely three whole genome duplications in the lineage to the last common ancestor of L. polyphemus and the three additional members of the extant horseshoe crab species cluster. Here, we report that all five L. polyphemus Pax6 paralogs are conserved in the approximately 135-million-year-old horseshoe crab species cluster and that they evolve under strong purifying selection. Largely homogenous protein sequence diversification rates of ey and toy paralogs suggest subfunctionalization as the likeliest preservation trajectory. However, our studies further revealed evidence that the horseshoe crab ey1 and ey2 paralogs share a derived splice isoform that encodes a unique five amino acid-long insertion in helix 3 of the homeodomain. This suggests that the exceptional expansion of the horseshoe crab Pax6 gene family repertoire was also associated with regulatory diversification and possibly innovation.

The complex nature of the retina demands well-organized signaling to uphold signal accuracy and avoid interference, a critical aspect in handling a variety of visual stimuli. A-kinase anchoring proteins (AKAPs), known for binding protein kinase A (PKA), contribute to the specificity and efficiency of retinal signaling. They play multifaceted roles in various retinal cell types, influencing photoreceptor sensitivity, neurotransmitter release in bipolar cells, and the integration of visual information in ganglion cells. AKAPs like AKAP79/150 and AKAP95 exhibit distinct subcellular localizations, impacting synaptic transmission and receptor sensitivity in photoreceptors and bipolar cells. Furthermore, AKAPs are involved in neuroprotective mechanisms and axonal degeneration, particularly in retinal ganglion cells. In particular, AKAP6 coordinates stressspecific signaling and promotes neuroprotection following optic nerve injury. As our review underscores the therapeutic potential of targeting AKAP signaling complexes for retinal neuroprotection and enhancement, it acknowledges challenges in developing selective drugs that target complex protein--protein interactions. Overall, this exploration of AKAPs provides valuable insights into the intricacies of retinal signaling, offering a foundation for understanding and potentially addressing retinal disorders. Recently, we proposed (Kozak et al. in Transl Vis Sci Technol 10:9, 2021) a new motion-acuity test for low vision patients, enabling full visual field functional assessment through simultaneous perception of shape and motion. Here, we integrated this test as the last step of a 10-week motion-perception training. Results: Cats were divided into three groups: retinal-lesioned only and two trained groups, retinal-lesioned trained and control trained. The behavioral data revealed that trained cats with retinal lesions were superior in motion tasks, even when the difficulty relied only on acuity. 7 T-MRI scanning was done before and after lesioning at 5 different timepoints, followed by Fixel-Based and Fractional Anisotropy Analysis. In cats with retinal lesions, training resulted in a more localized and reduced percentage decrease in Fixel-Based Analysis metrics in the dLGN, caudate nucleus and hippocampus compared to untrained cats. In motion-sensitive area V5/PMLS, the significant decreases in fiber density were equally strong in retinal-lesioned untrained and trained cats, up to 40% in both groups. The only cortical area with Fractional Anisotropy values not affected by central retinal loss was area V5/PMLS. In other visual ROIs, the Fractional Anisotropy values increased over time in the untrained retinal lesioned group, whereas they decreased in the retinal lesioned trained group and remained at a similar level as in trained controls. Conclusions: Overall, our MRI results showed a stabilizing effect of motion training applied soon after central retinal loss induction on white matter structure. We propose that introducing early motion-acuity training for low vision patients, aimed at the intact and active retinal peripheries, may facilitate brain plasticity processes toward better vision. The superior colliculus (SC) is a prominent and conserved visual center in all vertebrates. In mice, the most superficial lamina of the SC is enriched with neurons that are selective for the moving direction of visual stimuli. Here, we study how these direction selective neurons respond to complex motion patterns known as plaids, using two-photon calcium imaging in awake male and female mice. The plaid pattern consists of two superimposed sinusoidal gratings moving in different directions, giving an apparent pattern direction that lies between the directions of the two component gratings. Most direction selective neurons in the mouse SC respond robustly to the plaids and show a high selectivity for the moving direction of the plaid pattern but not of its components. Pattern motion selectivity is seen in both excitatory and inhibitory SC neurons and is especially prevalent in response to plaids with large cross angles between the two component gratings. However, retinal inputs to the SC are ambiguous in their selectivity to pattern versus component motion. Modeling suggests that pattern motion selectivity in the SC can arise from a nonlinear transformation of converging retinal inputs. In contrast, the prevalence of pattern motion selective neurons is not seen in the primary visual cortex (V1). These results demonstrate an interesting difference between the SC and V1 in motion processing and reveal the SC as an important site for encoding pattern motion. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Background: Disconjugate eye movements are essential for depth perception in frontal-eyed species, but their underlying neural substrates are largely unknown. Lesions in the midbrain can cause disconjugate eye movements. While vertically disconjugate eye movements have been linked to defective visuo-vestibular integration, the pathophysiology and neuroanatomy of horizontally disconjugate eye movements remains elusive. Methods: A patient with a solitary focal midbrain lesion was examined using detailed clinical ocular motor assessments, binocular videooculography and diffusion-weighted MRI, which was co-registered to a high-resolution cytoarchitectonic MR-atlas. Results: The patient exhibited both vertically and horizontally disconjugate eye alignment and nystagmus. Binocular videooculography showed a strong correlation of vertical and horizontal oscillations during fixation but not in darkness. Oscillation intensities and waveforms were modulated by fixation, illumination, and gaze position, suggesting shared visual- and vestibular-related mechanisms. The lesion was mapped to a functionally ill-defined area of the dorsal midbrain, adjacent to the posterior commissure and sparing nuclei with known roles in vertical gaze control. Conclusion: A circumscribed region in the dorsal midbrain appears to be a key node for disconjugate eye movements in both vertical and horizontal planes. Lesioning this area produces a unique ocular motor syndrome mirroring hallmarks of developmental strabismus and nystagmus. With the explosion of sensory data in the Internet of Things (IoT) era, conventional machine vision systems are becoming increasingly difficult to meet the requirements of high efficiency, low energy consumption, and low latency due to their inherent shortcomings of separate sensing, memory, and computing units. Inspired by the retina and neuromorphic computing, the sensing-memory-computing integrated vision system (SMCVS) that features low power consumption, low latency, and high parallelism has been considered a promising technology to surpass the von Neumann architecture and realize strong artificial intelligence. Meanwhile, novel materials like two-dimensional semiconductors and quantum dots with novel optoelectronic performance provide hardware carriers for implementing integrated sensing-memory-computing architectures, attracting considerable attention. This paper reviews the recent research progress in bioinspired vision systems in terms of biomimetic mechanisms, design principles, computational architectures, and applications. Firstly, the biomimetic mechanisms are illustrated to guide the design of high-performance artificial visual perception systems. Then the research progress of optoelectronic-synapse-based bioinspired vision systems in the device principles and applications including image filtering, color recognition, visual adaptation, and motion detection are summarized. Introduction: Traumatic brain injury (TBI) is an important public health concern and that may lead to severe neural sequels, such as color vision deficits. Methods: We evaluated the color vision of 10 TBI patients with normal cognitive function using a color discrimination test in a fixed saturation level. We also analyzed computerized tomography scans to identify the local of the brain damages. Results: Four TBI patients that had lesions in brain areas of the ventral visual streams, five TBI patients had lesions inferred in brain areas of the dorsal visual stream, and one TBI patient had lesion in the occipital area. All the patients had cognitive and color vision screened and they had characterized the chromatic discrimination at high and low saturation. All participants had no significant cognitive impairment in the moment of the color vision test. Additionally, they had perfect performance for discrimination of chromatic stimulus at high saturation and similar to controls (n = 37 age-matched participants). Three of four TBI patients with lesions in the ventral brain and one patient with lesion in the occipital area had impairment of the chromatic discrimination at low saturation. All TBI patients with lesions in the dorsal brain had performance similar or slightly worse than the controls. Conclusion: Chromatic discrimination at low saturation was associated to visual damage in the ventral region of the brain and is a potential tool for functional evaluation of brain damage in TBI patients. Purpose: Auditory verbal hallucinations (AVH) are a frequently occurring phenomenon in which subjects hear verbal sounds in the absence of any external stimuli. The prevalence of auditory hallucinations in schizophrenia has been revealed in many studies. Healthy subjects may also experience auditory hallucinations without accompanying psychological or neurological disorders, and in rare cases they seek clinical assistance for this emotionally disturbing condition. The aim of this study was to investigate the neural basis of emotional disturbance in auditory hallucinating subjects who do not suffer from any psychological or neurological disorder. Materials and Methods: Fourteen subjects suffering from auditory hallucinations and 15 age- and sex-matched healthy controls were recruited in this study. All participants underwent fMRI in two experimental sessions. In the first experimental session, all participants from both groups listened to pleasant auditory stimuli. In the second session, both groups listened to unpleasant auditory stimuli. The auditory stimuli were obtained from the International Affective Digitized Sounds (IADS). Results: Compared with the healthy control group, AVH subjects exhibited significantly increased activation in limbic, auditory, and frontal regions. Background and Aim: Path integration refers to the capability of utilizing self-motion information produced by one's own bodily movements to accurately determine and maintain one's position in space. Typically, path integration mechanisms come into play when visual information is limited or absent. The objective of this study was to develop a path integration test that relies solely on self-motion cues derived from body movements, without the involvement of visual cues. Methods: The study involved 157 volunteers (86 females and 71 males) aged between 18 and 70 years. Participants were asked to walk on a coordinated ground with their closed eyes and follow the six different commands. They were, after that, requested to return their initial position. Movement time was manually measured by the stopwatch. The distance between the original reference point and estimated starting point was recorded. Results: The second command that showed the lowest standard deviation out of the six commands given to the participants was observed as the more reliable test among the other commands (47.51±33.75). In addition, the completion time of the second command increased with increasing age (p<0.001). Conclusion: This study introduces an innovative spatial navigation approach utilizing the second command set. Vision is formed by the transmission of light stimuli to the brain through axons extending from photoreceptor cells. Damage to these axons leads to loss of vision. Despite research on neural circuit regeneration through transplantation, achieving precise axon projection remains challenging. To achieve optic nerve regeneration by transplantation, we employed the Drosophila visual system. We previously established a transplantation method for Drosophila utilizing photoreceptor precursor cells extracted from the eye disc. However, little axonal elongation of transplanted cells into the brain, the lamina, was observed. We verified axonal elongation to the lamina by modifying the selection process for transplanted cells. Moreover, we focused on N‐cadherin (Ncad), a cell adhesion factor, and Twinstar (Tsr), which has been shown to promote actin reorganization and induce axon elongation in damaged nerves. Overexpression of Ncad and tsr promoted axon elongation to the lamina, along with presynaptic structure formation in the elongating axons. Furthermore, overexpression of Neurexin‐1 (Nrx‐1), encoding a protein identified as a synaptic organizer, was found to not only promote presynapse formation but also enhance axon elongation. By introducing Ncad, tsr, and Nrx‐1, we not only successfully achieved axonal projection of transplanted cells to the brain beyond the retina, but also confirmed the projection of transplanted cells into a deeper ganglion, the medulla. Vision plays a vital biological role in organisms, which depends on the visual pigment molecules (opsin plus chromophore). The expansion or reduction of spectral channels in the organisms is determined by distinct opsin classes and copy numbers resulting from duplication or loss. Within Coleoptera, the superfamily Elateroidea exhibits a great diversity of morphological and physiological characteristics, such as bioluminescence, making this group an important model for opsin studies. While molecular and physiological studies have been conducted in Lampyridae and Elateridae, other families remain unexplored. Here, we reused transcriptome datasets from Elateroidea species, including members of Elateridae, Lampyridae, Phengodidae, Rhagophthalmidae, Cantharidae, and Lycidae, to detect the diversity of putative opsin genes in this superfamily. In addition, we tested the signature of sites under positive selection in both ultraviolet (UV)‐ and long‐wavelength (LW)‐opsin classes. Although the visual system in Elateroidea is considered simple, we observed events of duplication in LW‐ and UV‐opsin, as well as the absence of UV‐opsin in distinct families, such as larval Phengodidae individuals. We detected different copies of LW‐opsins that were highly expressed in the eyes of distinct tribes of fireflies, indicating the possible selection of each copy during the evolution of the sexual mating to avoid spectrum overlapping. In Elateridae, we found that the bioluminescent species had a distinct LW‐opsin copy compared with the non‐bioluminescent species, suggesting events of duplication and loss. The signature of positive selection showed only one residue associated with the chromophore binding site in the Elateroidea, which may produce a bathochromic shift in the wavelength absorption spectra in this family. K+ channel Kir7.1 expressed at the apical membrane of the retinal pigment epithelium (RPE) plays an essential role in retinal function. An isoleucine-to-threonine mutation at position 120 of the protein is responsible for blindness-causing vitreo-retinal dystrophy. We have studied the molecular mechanism of action of Kir7.1-I120T in vitro by heterologous expression and in vivo in CRISPR-generated knockin mice. Full-size Kir7.1-I120T reaches the plasma membrane but lacks any activity. Analysis of Kir7.1 and the I120T mutant in mixed transfection experiments, and that of tandem tetrameric constructs made by combining wild type (WT) and mutant protomers, leads us to conclude that they do not form heterotetramers in vitro. Homozygous I120T/I120T mice show cleft palate and tracheomalacia and do not survive beyond P0, whereas heterozygous WT/I120T develop normally. Membrane conductance of RPE cells isolated from WT/WT and heterozygous WT/I120T mice is dominated by Kir7.1 current. Using Rb+ as a charge carrier, we demonstrate that the Kir7.1 current of WT/I120T RPE cells corresponds to approximately 50% of that in cells from WT/WT animals, in direct proportion to WT gene dosage. This suggests a lack of compensatory effects or interference from the mutated allele product, an interpretation consistent with results obtained using WT/– hemizygous mouse. Electroretinography and behavioral tests also show normal vision in WT/I120T animals. The hypomorphic ion channel phenotype of heterozygous Kir7.1-I120T mutants is therefore compatible with normal development and retinal function. The lack of detrimental effect of this degree of functional deficit might explain the recessive nature of Kir7.1 mutations causing human eye disease. NEW & NOTEWORTHY: Human retinal pigment epithelium K+ channel Kir7.1 is affected by generally recessive mutations leading to blindness. We investigate one such mutation, isoleucine-to-threonine at position 120, both in vitro and in vivo in knockin mice. The mutated channel is inactive and in heterozygosis gives a hypomorphic phenotype with normal retinal function. Mutant channels do not interfere with wild-type Kir7.1 channels which are expressed concomitantly without hindrance, providing an explanation for the recessive nature of the disease. Studying how objects are positioned is vital for improving technologies like robots, cameras, and virtual reality. In our earlier papers, we introduced a bio-inspired artificial visual system for orientation detection, demonstrating its superiority over traditional systems with higher recognition rates, greater biological resemblance, and increased resistance to noise. In this paper, we propose a hardware-based orientation detection system (ODS). The ODS is implemented by a multiple dendritic neuron model (DNM), and a neuronal pruning scheme for the DNM is proposed. After performing the neuronal pruning, only the synapses in the direct and inverse connections states are retained. The former can be realized by a comparator, and the latter can be replaced by a combination of a comparator and a logic NOT gate. For the dendritic function, the connection of synapses on dendrites can be realized with logic AND gates. Then, the output of the neuron is equivalent to a logic OR gate. Compared with other machine learning methods, this logic circuit circumvents floating-point arithmetic and therefore requires very little computing resources to perform complex classification. Furthermore, the ODS can be designed based on experience, so no learning process is required. The superiority of ODS is verified by experiments on binary, grayscale, and color image datasets. The ability to process data rapidly owing to advantages such as parallel computation and simple hardware implementation allows the ODS to be desirable in the era of big data. It is worth mentioning that the experimental results are corroborated with anatomical, physiological, and neuroscientific studies, which may provide us with a new insight for understanding the complex functions in the human brain. Perception or imagination requires top-down signals from high-level cortex to primary visual cortex (V1) to reconstruct or simulate the representations bottom-up stimulated by the seen images. Interestingly, top-down signals in V1 have lower spatial resolution than bottom-up representations. It is unclear why the brain uses low-resolution signals to reconstruct or simulate high-resolution representations. By modeling the top-down pathway of the visual system using the decoder of a variational auto-encoder (VAE), we reveal that low-resolution top-down signals can better reconstruct or simulate the information contained in the sparse activities of V1 simple cells, which facilitates perception and imagination. This advantage of low-resolution generation is related to facilitating high-level cortex to form geometry-respecting representations observed in experiments. Furthermore, we present two findings regarding this phenomenon in the context of AI-generated sketches, a style of drawings made of lines. First, we found that the quality of the generated sketches critically depends on the thickness of the lines in the sketches: thin-line sketches are harder to generate than thick-line sketches. Second, we propose a technique to generate high-quality thin-line sketches: instead of directly using original thin-line sketches, we use blurred sketches to train VAE or GAN (generative adversarial network), and then infer the thin-line sketches from the VAE- or GAN-generated blurred sketches. Collectively, our work suggests that low-resolution top-down generation is a strategy the brain uses to improve visual perception and imagination, which inspires new sketch-generation AI techniques. Horseshoe crabs represent the most ancestral chelicerate lineage characterized by marine ecology and the possession of lateral compound eyes. While considered living fossils, recent studies reported an unusual number of Pax6 genes in the Atlantic horseshoe crab Limulus polyphemus. Pax genes encode ancient metazoan transcription factors, which comprise seven subfamilies. Among these, the members of the Pax6 subfamily confer critical functions in the development of the head, the visual system, and further body plan components. Arthropods are generally characterized by two Pax6 subfamily homologs that were discovered in Drosophila and named eyeless (ey) and twin of eyeless (toy). However, whole genome sequence searches uncovered three homologs of ey and two homologs of toy in L. polyphemus. These numbers are explained by the occurrence of likely three whole genome duplications in the lineage to the last common ancestor of L. polyphemus and the three additional members of the extant horseshoe crab species cluster. Here, we report that all five L. polyphemus Pax6 paralogs are conserved in the approximately 135-million-year-old horseshoe crab species cluster and that they evolve under strong purifying selection. Largely homogenous protein sequence diversification rates of ey and toy paralogs suggest subfunctionalization as the likeliest preservation trajectory. However, our studies further revealed evidence that the horseshoe crab ey1 and ey2 paralogs share a derived splice isoform that encodes a unique five amino acid-long insertion in helix 3 of the homeodomain. This suggests that the exceptional expansion of the horseshoe crab Pax6 gene family repertoire was also associated with regulatory diversification and possibly innovation. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Terrestrial gastropods have a lens‐bearing eye on the tip of their tentacles. There are two morphologically distinct photoreceptors, called Type‐I and Type‐II photoreceptors, in the retina. Type‐I photoreceptors are equipped with highly developed photoreceptive microvilli in their outer rhabdomeric segment, whereas Type‐II photoreceptors have short and fewer microvilli. Although both types of photoreceptors send afferent projections directly to the brain, their destinations in the brain, called optic neuropiles, have not been sufficiently investigated. Our recent studies revealed that there are commissural fibers in the cerebral ganglia that transmit photic information acquired by bilateral eyes. Moreover, some of the retinal photoreceptors are connected by gap junctions to the photosensitive brain neurons, suggesting the functional interaction of the photic information between the eye and brain photoreceptors, as well as between bilateral eyes. However, it has not been clarified which type of retinal photoreceptors send commissural projections to the contralateral hemiganglion nor interact with the brain photoreceptors. In the present study, we demonstrated by molecular histological analyses and tracer injections that (1) Type‐I and Type‐II photoreceptors send glutamatergic afferent projections to the medial and lateral lobes of the ipsilateral optic neuropile, respectively, (2) direct synaptic interaction between bilateral optic nerves occurs in the medial lobe of the optic neuropile, and (3) brain photosensory neurons form gap junctions with the medial lobe of the contralateral optic neuropile. Background: Numerous studies have indicated altered temporal features of the brain function in Parkinson's disease (PD), and the autocorrelation magnitude of intrinsic neural signals, called intrinsic neural timescales, were often applied to estimate how long neural information stored in local brain areas. However, it is unclear whether PD patients at different disease stages exhibit abnormal timescales accompanied with abnormal gray matter volume (GMV). Purpose: To assess the intrinsic timescale and GMV in PD. Study Type: Prospective. Population: 74 idiopathic PD patients (44 early stage (PD‐ES) and 30 late stage (PD‐LS), as determined by the Hoehn and Yahr (HY) severity classification scale), and 73 healthy controls (HC). Field Strength/Sequence: 3.0 T MRI scanner; magnetization prepared rapid acquisition gradient echo and echo planar imaging sequences. Assessment: The timescales were estimated by using the autocorrelation magnitude of neural signals. Voxel‐based morphometry was performed to calculate GMV in the whole brain. Severity of motor symptoms and cognitive impairments were assessed using the unified PD rating scale, the HY scale, the Montreal cognitive assessment, and the mini‐mental state examination. Statistical Test: Analysis of variance; two‐sample t‐test; Spearman rank correlation analysis; Mann–Whitney U test; Kruskal‐Wallis' H test. A P value <0.05 was considered statistically significant. Results: The PD group had significantly abnormal intrinsic timescales in the sensorimotor, visual, and cognitive‐related areas, which correlated with the symptom severity (ρ = −0.265, P = 0.022) and GMV (ρ = 0.254, P = 0.029). Compared to the HC group, the PD‐ES group had significantly longer timescales in anterior cortical regions, whereas the PD‐LS group had significantly shorter timescales in posterior cortical regions. Conclusion: This study suggested that PD patients have abnormal timescales in multisystem and distinct patterns of timescales and GMV in cerebral cortex at different disease stages. How to realize flexible behavior decision making is an important prerequisite for mobile robots to perform various tasks. To solve the problems of poor real-time performance and adaptability of traditional methods, this paper proposes a method that simulates cerebellar function through developmental network, and simulates the function of "what" and "where" channels in the visual system as well as the neuromodulatory mechanisms of dopamine and serotonin, so as to improve the adaptability of cerebellar model to behavioral decision making under supervised learning strategies. At the same time, this paper pays special attention to the strategy of simulating cerebellar reinforcement learning. By simulating the sleep recall mechanism of hippocampus and the neuromodulatory mechanism of acetylcholine and norepinephrine, mobile robots can have continuous and stable learning ability in unfamiliar environment, and improve the real-time and adaptability of their behavioral decision making. Simulation results in both static and dynamic environments, as well as the results in the static physical environment, validate the potential of this model, indicating that the cerebellar model based on reinforcement learning plays an important role in the behavioral decision making of mobile robots. When we are asleep, we lose the ability to promptly respond to external stimuli, and yet we spend many hours every day in this inherently risky behavioral state. This simple fact strongly suggests that sleep must serve essential functions that rely on the brain going offline, on a daily basis, and for long periods of time. If these functions did not require partial sensory disconnection, it would be difficult to explain why they are not performed during waking. Paradoxically, despite its central role in defining sleep and what sleep does, sensory disconnection during sleep remains a mystery. We have a limited understanding of how it is implemented along the sensory pathways; we do not know whether the same mechanisms apply to all sensory modalities, nor do we know to what extent these mechanisms are shared between non-rapid eye movement (NREM) sleep and REM sleep. Although many studies conducted in Ethiopia related with the topic, there were focused on childhood visual impairments.Objectives: To assess the prevalence and factors associated with visual impairment among older adults.Methodology: A community-based cross-sectional study design was conducted in Arba Minch Zuria District. Systematic sampling technique was employed to select 655 adults aged 40 and above. Data were gathered through face-to-face interviews and visual acuity measurements, and SPSS version 25 was used for analysis. Bivariate and multivariate logistic regression analyses were performed to identify factors associated with visual impairment.Results: The overall prevalence of visual impairment was found to be 36.95% (95% CI=33.2– 40.8%). Factors associated with a higher odds of visual impairment included aged 51– 60 years (AOR=2.37,95%CI=1.29– 4.44), aged 61 and above (AOR=8.9, 95%CI=4.86– 16.3), low wealth index ((AOR=1.81, 95%CI: 1.14– 3.2), divorced and widowed (AOR=4.67, 95%CI:2.77– 7.86), no formal education (AOR=14.28, 95%CI: 2.82– 71.46), not utilizing eyeglass (AOR=3.94, 95%CI (1.65– 9.40). The most possible causes of visual impairment were found to be refractive error and cataract.Conclusions and Recommendations: The prevalence of visual impairment among study population was relatively high, and more than three-fifths of participants had unilateral visual impairment. Age, marital status, occupation, educational status, wealth index, and not wearing of prescribed eyeglasses were significantly associated with visual impairment. Refractive error is the leading cause of visual impairment. Awareness of spectacle use and expanding cataract surgery coverage are urgently needed in this area.Keywords: older adults, eye, visual system, visual impairment

Insects are one of the most widely distributed animals on earth, and their visual systems have strong adaptability, deeply affecting their survival, reproduction, diet, and environmental adaptation. With the sequencing of the entire genome of Drosophila and the development of modern biotechnology, research on visual proteins has made significant progress. Currently, a large amount of visual protein data has been obtained through conventional experimental methods and high-throughput analysis technology, but the functions of most visual proteins are still unannotated. In addition, the current research focus mostly on individual proteins or single interactions, and there has been no comprehensive analysis of visual proteins as a whole. Therefore, in this article we used network biology methods to construct the protein-protein interaction network of visual system in Drosophila and further determine the crucial proteins in the network. We have mainly obtained seed proteins by searching a large number of literature related to visual proteins in Drosophila, and used the STRING database to obtain information on protein-protein interactions to construct the protein-protein interaction network of visual system. The clusterProfiler software package was used for functional enrichment analysis. The protein-protein interaction network constructed using Cytoscape software included 248 proteins and 2948 interactions, and the crucial proteins in the network are Akt1, arm, Src42A, Pten, Rho1, norpA, and Egfr, etc. They are crucial visual proteins in Drosophila. These proteins play an important role in the network structure.The results showed that visual proteins play an important role in biological rhythms, morphogenesis, and basic metabolism of the insect.

Processing of visual information is a highly non-linear process involving complex interactions across (sub)cortical networks. In this exploratory study, we combined electroencephalography with bisinusoidal light stimulation to assess non-linear features of visual processing in participants with migraine. Methods: Twenty participants with migraine (10 with aura, 10 without aura) and ten non-headache controls were measured (outside attacks). Participants received bi-sinusoidal 13 + 23 Hz red light visual stimulation. Electroencephalography spectral power and multi-spectral phase coherence were compared between groups at the driving stimulation frequencies together with multiples and combinations of these frequencies (harmonic and intermodulation frequencies) caused by non-linearities. Results: Only at the driving frequency of 13 Hz higher spectral power was found in migraine with aura participants compared with those with migraine without aura and controls. Differences in phase coherence were present for 2nd, 4th, and 5th-order non-linearities in those with migraine (migraine with and without aura) compared with controls. Bi-sinusoidal light stimulation revealed evident non-linearities in the brain's electroencephalography response up to the 5th order with reduced phase coherence for higher order interactions in interictal participants with migraine. Discussion: Insight into interictal non-linear visual processing may help understand brain dynamics underlying migraine attack susceptibility. Tea glaze design is a complex and artistic work, and traditional design methods often rely on the subjective experience and feelings of designers. With the development of optical technology, sensor and image processing technology can provide more accurate and objective data analysis methods, thereby improving the quality and efficiency of tea glaze design. This paper aims to explore the application of sensor-based image optical processing in tea glaze design vision system, and build a tea glaze design vision system by using appropriate optical sensors and image processing algorithms. The system can obtain real-time image data of tea ware surface and transform it into analyzable features by optical processing method. Then these features are compared and analyzed with the preset design requirements, so as to evaluate whether the tea glaze design meets the requirements. The results show that the system can provide accurate image data and feature analysis results, which can improve the quality and efficiency of tea ware glaze design, reduce the influence of subjective factors, and provide more accurate and objective design reference for designers. Here, we describe the postnatal development of retinal projections in galagos. Galagos are of special interest as they represent the understudied strepsirrhine branch (galagos, pottos, lorises, and lemurs) of the primate radiations. The projections of both eyes were revealed in each galago by injecting red or green cholera toxin subunit B (CTB) tracers into different eyes of galagos ranging from postnatal day 5 to adult. In the dorsal lateral geniculate nucleus, the magnocellular, parvocellular, and koniocellular layers were clearly labeled and identified by having inputs from the ipsilateral or contralateral eye at all ages. In the superficial layers of the superior colliculus, the terminations from the ipsilateral eye were just ventral to those from the contralateral eye at all ages. Other terminations at postnatal day 5 and later were in the pregeniculate nucleus, the accessory optic system, and the pretectum. As in other primates, a small retinal projection terminated in the posterior part of the pulvinar, which is known to project to the temporal visual cortex. This small projection from both eyes was most apparent on day 5 and absent in mature galagos. A similar reduction over postnatal maturation has been reported in marmosets, leading to the speculation that early retinal inputs to the pulvinar are responsible for the activation and early maturation of the middle temporal visual area, MT. Priority map theory is a leading framework for understanding how various aspects of stimulus displays and task demands guide visual attention. Per this theory, the visual system computes a priority map, which is a representation of visual space indexing the relative importance, or priority, of locations in the environment. Priority is computed based on both salience, defined based on image-computable properties; and relevance, defined by an individual's current goals, and is used to direct attention to the highest-priority locations for further processing. Computational theories suggest that priority maps identify salient locations based on individual feature dimensions (e.g., color, motion), which are integrated into an aggregate priority map. While widely accepted, a core assumption of this framework, the existence of independent feature dimension maps in visual cortex, remains untested. Here, we tested the hypothesis that retinotopic regions selective for specific feature dimensions (color or motion) in human cortex act as neural feature dimension maps, indexing salient locations based on their preferred feature. We used fMRI activation patterns to reconstruct spatial maps while male and female human participants viewed stimuli with salient regions defined by relative color or motion direction. Activation in reconstructed spatial maps was localized to the salient stimulus position in the display. Moreover, the strength of the stimulus representation was strongest in the ROI selective for the salience-defining feature. Together, these results suggest that feature-selective extrastriate visual regions highlight salient locations based on local feature contrast within their preferred feature dimensions, supporting their role as neural feature dimension maps.
