The temporal order of propagation in the blood-oxygen-level-dependent (BOLD) infra-slow activity (ISA, 0.01–0.1 Hz) of functional magnetic resonance imaging (fMRI) can indicate the functional organization of the brain. While prior studies have revealed the temporal order of propagation of BOLD ISA during rest, how it emerges during cognitive tasks remains unclear. Furthermore, its differences between the gray and white matters at the whole-brain scale are unexplored. In this study, we probed the propagation of BOLD ISA using a publicly available fMRI dataset from participants performing visual detection and discrimination tasks (N = 46, 29 females). We examined the temporal order of propagation based on ISA oscillatory phase differences among brain parcels. During visual task performance, ISA in both the gray and white matters propagated in a direction from the visual cortex to the association cortex, including the default mode network (DMN). This result differs from the previously reported propagation direction during rest that traveled from the visual and somatosensory cortices to the DMN, suggesting that the functional organization may change when performing cognitive tasks. In addition, the propagation in the white matter represented more complex patterns than that in the gray matter, exhibiting that the cingulum preceded DMN. Purpose: This study was designed to compare the effects of mental load, caused by concurrent auditory tasks, on attended and non‐attended visual stimuli in older and younger adults. Methods: Participants performed a visual orientation discrimination task involving two spatially separated Gabor patches of 4 cycles/degree and 55% contrast. Participants received either a valid‐cue, invalid‐cue or a neutral‐cue for the patch whose orientation they were required to determine. An auditory n‐back task was performed simultaneously to impose mental load. Repeated‐measures ANOVA was used for investigation of main effects and interactions of ageing, mental load and attention condition on orientation discrimination. Results: A total of 27 younger (mean age ± SD, 22.6 ± 1.3 years) and 23 older adults (54.7 ± 4.3 years) participated in the study. There was a significant effect of age (p = 0.01) and mental load (p < 0.001) on the proportion of correct orientation discrimination responses. Attentional condition significantly affected the proportion of correct responses (p = 0.02), but there was no significant interaction between attention, mental load and age group (p = 0.85). There was no overall difference in the proportion of no responses (the proportion of trials in which the participants failed to respond) between the two age groups (p = 0.53) nor on the overall effect of attention on the proportion of no responses (p = 0.25). There was, however, a significant effect of mental load on the proportion of no responses (p = 0.002). Conclusion: Although mental load reduced performance equally for both age groups and for all attentional conditions, older adults had poorer overall performance. We explored how body movements influence illusory body motion intensity and their association with motion sickness. Twelve individuals who were seated in the back of a passenger car, performed a visual task and were subjected to continuous rotations followed by driving in a straight line. The body movements during and immediately after rotation were categorized as follows: (A) upright posture; (B) leaning the body in the yaw direction towards the rotation center, returning the yaw angle to zero upon transitioning to straight line travel, and tilting in the roll condition and gradually returning to upright; and (C) tilting in roll conditions towards the centripetal direction during rotation and becoming upright upon transitioning to straight line travel. In experiment-1, after spanning half a lap, participants reported the intensity of the illusory motion experienced during straight line travel immediately after rotation. In experiment-2, after travelling up to eight laps, the participants reported the symptom level of motion sickness experienced during two straight sections per lap using the MIsery SCale (MISC). Experiment-1 revealed that condition (C) had significantly larger illusions than Conditions (A) and (B). Experiment-2 revealed that motion sickness progressed significantly more in Condition (C) than in Condition (A). A significant positive correlation was found between the observed MISC and the illusion strength. Our findings suggest that body movements during and immediately after continuous rotation have a significant impact on the illusion strength. Sensory processing sensitivity (SPS) is a biological trait associated with heightened sensitivity and responsivity to the environment. One important question is how those with the trait perceive their environments, thus giving rise to differential responses and outcomes. In this study, we used an artificial intelligence (AI) model—SPS Vision Net—to investigate perceptual differences associated with SPS and to begin to predict sensitivity levels based on a visual perception task. 190 participants (M age = 22.91; 102 (53%) females), completed an online experiment where they rated 100 images from the Open Affective Standardized Image Set (OASIS) on arousal, valence, and visual saliency. They also completed the Highly Sensitive Person (HSP) Scale measure of SPS. Results showed that SPS was positively associated with arousal in response to negative (vs. positive and neutral images), and, namely, sad (vs. happy, neutral, or fear) images. Also, SPS was negatively associated with positive ratings of negative images, specifically those showing frightening images. SPS was unrelated to response times and the number of salient selection blocks made. However, the AI model showed high accuracy (83.31%) in predicting SPS levels (R2 = 0.77). Consistent with theory and research, this study showed that SPS is associated with higher arousal and lower positive ratings in response to the OASIS image rating task. Novel findings showed that a new, accurate AI-backed SPS measurement system, based on a visual selection, was predictive of HSP scores with high accuracy. The aim of this study was to describe the spectral features of pre-stimulus event-related potential (ERP) components elicited in visual tasks such as the Bereitschaftspotential (BP), prefrontal negativity (pN) and visual negativity (vN). ERPs are considered time-locked and phase-locked (evoked) activity, but we have also analyzed the non-phase but time-locked (induced) activity in the same interval by applying the temporal spectral evolution (TSE) method. Participants (N = 26) were tested in a passive task, a simple response task (SRT) and a discriminative response task (DRT), where EEG activity was recorded with 64 scalp electrodes. We analyzed the time-frequency modulations (phase and non-phase) prior to the onset of the stimuli in the sub-delta, delta, theta, alpha, beta, and gamma frequency bands. The results showed that all the pre-stimulus ERP components were mainly regulated by evoked activity in the sub-delta band. On the other hand, induced activity seems to be linked to evoked responses but with a different psychophysiological role. We concluded that other preparatory cognitive mechanisms associated with ERPs can also be detected by the TSE method. This finding may suggest underlying mechanisms in non-phase activity and requires the addition of non-phase activity analysis to the traditional analysis (phase and evoked activity). Patients with Parkinson's disease (PD) notably exhibit impairments in posture and visual attention. The objective of the present study was to determine whether PD patients were able to exhibit adaptive postural control in a goal-directed visual task. We hypothesized that the patients would reduce their centre of pressure (COP) movement and/or postural sway to a lesser extent than age-matched controls in the goal-directed visual (search) task, compared with the control free-viewing task (i.e., a lower degree of relative postural adaptation). We also expected the PD patients to sway more than controls in the goal-directed task (i.e., a lower degree of absolute adaptive postural control). The study included 39 PD patients (mean age: 59; mean Hoehn and Yahr stage: 2.1; mean Movement Disorder Society-Unified Parkinson's Disease Rating Scale score: 22; mean Montreal Cognitive Assessment score: 28 (on-drug)) and 40 age-matched adults (mean age: 62 years). The participants gazed at domestic ecological images (visual angle: 100°). Movements of the COP, head, upper back and lower back and variations in pupil dilatation were analysed. As expected, PD patients exhibited greater COP and body sway than controls in both tasks (p < 0.05). Unexpectedly, the difference in COP and/or body sway between the two tasks was greater in PD patients than in controls (p < 0.05). Our results showed that PD patients are able to exhibit adaptive postural control for goal-directed visual tasks. To further develop three-dimensional (3D) applications, it is important to elucidate the negative effects of 3D applications on the human body and mind. Thus, this study investigated differences in the effects of visual fatigue on cognition and brain activity using visual and auditory tasks induced by watching a 1-h movie in two dimensions (2D) and 3D. Eighteen young men participated in this study. Two conditions were randomly performed for each participant on different days, namely, watching the 1-h movie on television in 2D (control condition) and 3D (3D condition). Before and after watching the 1-h movie on television, critical flicker fusion frequency (CFF: an index of visual fatigue), and response accuracy and reaction time for the cognitive tasks were determined. Brain activity during the cognitive tasks was evaluated using a multi-channel near-infrared spectroscopy system. In contrast to the control condition, the decreased CFF, and the lengthened reaction time and the decreased activity around the right primary somatosensory cortex during Go/NoGo blocks in the visual task at post-viewing in the 3D condition were significant, with significant repeated measures correlations among them. Meanwhile, in the auditory task, the changes in cognitive performance and brain activity during the Go/NoGo blocks were not significant in the 3D condition. These results suggest that the failure or delay in the transmission of visual information to the primary somatosensory cortex due to visual fatigue induced by watching a 3D movie reduced the brain activity around the primary somatosensory cortex, resulting in poor cognitive performance for the visual task. This suggests that performing tasks that require visual information, such as running in the dark or driving a car, immediately after using a 3D application, may create unexpected risks in our lives. Research into the potential associations between tinnitus and cognition has investigated specific cognitive domains in laboratory settings despite adults with tinnitus reporting broad cognitive difficulties in every-day life. To address this limitation, the present study compared performance and perceived exertion on a visual office-like task in 38 adults with tinnitus (19 with normal hearing and 19 with hearing loss) and 38 adults without tinnitus (19 with normal hearing and 19 with hearing loss) matched for age, sex and educational background. All participants were also assessed for hearing, anxiety and depression, and participants with tinnitus were also assessed for tinnitus handicap. No associations were found between presence of tinnitus and cognitive performance (mean total rate correct score on the visual office-like task being 2.9 for the tinnitus group, 2.8 for the control group, p = 0.612) and perceived exertion (mean ratings of perceived exertion on the Borg CR10-scale being 5.8 for the tinnitus group, 6.5 for the control group, p = 0.063) on the visual office-like task when corrected for standard (0.125 to 8 kHz) and extended high frequency (10 to 16 kHz) hearing thresholds, anxiety, and depression. The correction for extended high frequency average (10, 12.5, 14, and 16 kHz) hearing threshold was significant for performance (p = 0.009) but not perceived exertion on the visual office-like task. Overall, the results showed extended high frequency hearing, but not tinnitus, was associated with every-day cognitive performance. This indicates clinical testing of hearing thresholds above 8 kHz could support clinicians' identification and management of cognitive difficulties. One management method suggested by the current findings would include provision of auditory stimulation at frequencies exceeding the frequency response of many current hearing aids. PurposeThe objective quantitation of visual function in patients with advanced retinitis pigmentosa (RP) presents a difficult challenge due to the weak visual function of these patients. This study utilized magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) to assess the function and structure of the visual cortex (VC) in patients with RP and quantitatively categorize them.Materials and MethodsTwenty-three patients with RP and ten healthy controls (HCs) were enrolled for MRI examinations. The patients were divided into form perception (FP) and no form perception (NFP) groups. Participants underwent structural MRI scans, and two visual task functional MRI scans were performed using stimuli, including white flash and black and white checkerboard patterns. Eight regions of interest (ROIs) were studied. In structural MRI, the gray matter volume (GMV) was compared in the ROIs. In the two visual tasks, the response intensity and functional connectivity (FC) of ROIs were also compared separately. Correlation analysis was performed to explore the correlations between the structural and functional parameters.ResultsIn the structural analysis, the GMV in Brodmann areas 17, 18, and 19 of the FP and NFP groups was significantly lower than that of HCs. Regarding the functional data, the response intensity in the VC of both the FP and NFP groups was significantly lower than that in HCs. The response in Brodmann areas 17, 18, and 19 obtained using the pattern stimulus was significantly lower in the NFP group than in the FP group. For the FC comparison, the FP and NFP groups exhibited significantly lower values in several pathways than the HCs, and FC in the ipsilateral V1–contralateral V1 pathway in the flash task was significantly lower in the NFP group than in the FP group. A positive correlation between response intensity and GMV was observed in Brodmann areas 17, 18, and 19 in both flash and pattern visual tasks.ConclusionMagnetic resonance imaging was an effective tool to objectively and quantitatively evaluate the visual function of patients with advanced RP. Response intensity and FC were effective parameters to distinguish FP and NFP patients. A positive correlation between response intensity and GMV was observed in the VC.

Background: Despite it being purported that acute, prolonged maximal periods of exercise may impair visual performance, little/ no research on this topic is forthcoming. In fact, research has demonstrated that sub-maximal and maximal acute exercise may actually improve cognitive and sensory tasks and thus possibly improve visual performance. Objectives: This study aimed to ascertain the influence of an acute, prolonged maximal bout of exercise on visual performance. Methods: A quantitative study was undertaken with 60 untrained males being divided into a control group (CON; n = 30) or treatment group (TRE; n = 30). Both groups completed a baseline vision test battery consisting of accommodation facility, saccadic eye movement, speed of recognition, peripheral awareness, visual memory, and hand-eye coordination using the following tests; Hart Near Far Rock, saccadic eye movement, evasion, accumulator, flash memory and Ball Wall Toss tests. Two weeks later, participants returned for follow-up testing using the same vision test battery, with the TRE participants first engaging in a standardized incremental maximal treadmill protocol immediately prior to their vision testing. Results: Following the incrementalmaximaltreadmill protocol, statistical analyses indicated that statistically significant (P≤0.05) differences existed for accommodation facility, saccadic eye movements, speed of recognition, hand-eye coordination, peripheral awareness, and visual memory between pre-test and after the aerobic treatment (P = 0.00 for all measures). Conclusions: This study indicates that an acute, prolonged maximal bout of running improves visual performance. As such, an appropriate prolonged maximal warm-up may be required as opposed to a standardized and general warm-up when preparing an athlete for visual skills training or for participation in an athletic event that requires optimal visual performance. Human eye is a special kind of optical system, and its imaging quality and fatigue level seem susceptible to the illumination. In this study we were sought to develop a novel method to quantify ocular fatigue more accurately, and to assess the influence of light environment on ocular fatigue. Human factor experiments were performed on a total of 1249 participants. Among all physiological parameters, only accommodation and the 12th aberration presented significant variations during visual tasks. We deducted the ocular fatigue equation based on these two parameters together with other structural data. Regression equation and neural network were also constructed as complements. As a test, we predicted the ocular fatigue accumulations in various visual tasks. It was implied the predicted fatigue accumulations fell in separate ranges. It seems the novel method developed in this study could predict ocular fatigue accurately, and provide guidance to luminaire design.

Re-activations of task-dependent patterns of neural activity take place during post-encoding periods of wakeful rest and sleep. However, it is still unclear how the temporal dynamics of brain states change during these periods, which are shaped by prior conscious experiences. Here, we examined the very brief periods of wakeful rest immediately after encoding and recognition of auditory and visual stimuli, by applying the EEG microstate analysis, in which the global variance of the EEG is explained by only a few prototypical topographies. We identified the dominant brain states of sub-second duration during the tasks-dependent periods of rest, finding that the temporal dynamics—represented here by two temporal parameters: the frequency of occurrence and the fraction of time coverage—of three task-related microstate classes changed compared to wakeful rest. This study provides evidence of experience-dependent temporal changes in post-encoding periods of resting brain activity, which can be captured using the EEG microstates approach. The visual system is constantly bombarded with information originating from the outside world, but it is unable to process all the received information at any given time. In fact, the most salient parts of the visual scene are chosen to be processed involuntarily and immediately after the first glance along with endogenous signals in the brain. Vision scientists have shown that the early visual system, from retina to lateral geniculate nucleus (LGN) and then primary visual cortex, selectively processes the low-level features of the visual scene. Everything we perceive from the visual scene is based on these feature properties and their subsequent combination in higher visual areas. Different experiments have been designed to investigate the impact of these features on saliency and understand the relative visual mechanisms. In this paper, we review the psychophysical experiments which have been published in the last decades to indicate how the low-level salient features are processed in the early visual cortex and extract the most important and basic information of the visual scene. Important and open questions are discussed in this review as well and one might pursue these questions to investigate the impact of higher level features on saliency in complex scenes or natural images.

This article concerns discomfort due to sources of glare in the peripheral visual field. A visual task is needed to maintain foveal fixation at a known location, and in past studies the tasks have ranged from a simple fixation mark to a task requiring greater cognitive attention such as reading. It was hypothesized that these different approaches to control visual attention would influence the evaluation of discomfort. This article reports an experiment that compared evaluations of discomfort when using the two visual tasks, a simple circle and a pseudo-text reading task, and two procedures, category rating and luminance adjustment. The results from both procedures confirmed the hypothesis: a lower degree of discomfort was expressed in the pseudo-text trials than in trials with the circular fixation mark. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Objective: The aim of this study was to investigate the post-sauna residual consequences on brain neural network arousal, information processing and cognitive performance. Methods: Sixteen male subjects (24 ± 1 yr.) participated in the study. Whole-body hyperthermia was induced with Finnish sauna bathing. Before and 90 min after the sauna, resting electroencephalography (EEG) for spectral analysis and EEG event-related potentials (ERPs) during oddball tasks by two modalities (auditory and visual) were recorded. Results: Sauna bathing increased rectal temperature (Tre, 37.11 ± 0.33 °C to 38.84 ± 0.32 °C) and heart rate (HR, 65.63 ± 9.39 bpm to 151.0 ± 21.8 bpm). At 90 min after the sauna, Tre (37.00 ± 0.29 °C) and HR (72.1 ± 2.80 bpm) recovered to baseline levels. An increase was found in alpha power following sauna recovery. In the visual task modality, post-sauna recovery led to enhancement in the N2 amplitude with centroparietal distribution and decreases in P3 amplitude with distribution along the frontoparietal axis for executive motor-cognitive processing. In the auditory task modality, post-sauna recovery led to a decrease in P3 amplitude with a frontoparietal distribution and this change was accompanied by auditory N2 amplitude enhancement along the centroparietal distribution for non-target cognitive processing. No significant differences in task performance were found. Conclusion: Post-sauna recovery to normothermia led to enhanced resting neural network relaxation followed by increases in cognitive processing economy for the given oddball tasks. The auditory processing was not affected more by post-sauna recovery than was visual processing. Post-sauna recovery modifications in ERP components (stimulus processing) were insufficient to affect cognitive performance in both visual and auditory task modalities. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

The aim of the study is to develop a proof of concept experiment dedicated to the monitorization and augmentation of neuro-visual performances in airport security screening personnel. The main specific parameters of the visual tasks involved are visual stereotypy, detection of complex visual patterns, visual-spatial perspective, lowfrequency anomaly detection, limited time exposure and psychological pressure. The final result of the research is the development and validation of a neuro-augmentation program. The rapid development of this branch in the United States (military and civilian spin-offs), the previous interest of some NATO states and similar Romanian civilian initiatives determined us to propose the foundation of a Human Performance Optimization (or Enhancement) Centre for National Security Personnel.
