In this work, star-shaped heterostructures of Ag 2 O/BaTiO 3 /ZnO were proposed as resistive-type gas sensors. Through combined analyzes of XRD, SEM, and EDS, the structure, surface morphology, and the elemental composition of the synthesized materials were confirmed. The star-shaped morphology of BaTiO 3 /ZnO was found to be intact even after loading with different quantities of Ag 2 O, as revealed by the SEM analysis. The impact of loading different amounts of Ag 2 O (ranging from 1 % to 3 %) on the sensors' ability to detect volatile organic compounds (VOCs) and carbon dioxide (CO 2) was concretely gauged by their response, response/recovery times, selectivity, and long-term stability. For the detection of ethanol/acetone, CO 2 , and methanol, a 1:2 M ratio of BaTiO 3 /ZnO with 1 % and 2 % Ag 2 O, and a 1:3 M ratio of BaTiO 3 /ZnO with 1 % Ag 2 O were determined as the optimum content, respectively. From the gas sensing analysis, Ag 2 O/BaTiO 3 /ZnO sensors with different amounts of Ag 2 O additive gave different optimal temperatures for different target gases. Lower operating temperatures, i.e. 180 °C, and 260 °C for CO 2 and VOCs, respectively, rapid responsivity with a response time of <1 s for VOCs, and fast recovery times (as low as 10, 13, and 6 s for ethanol, acetone, and methanol vapors, respectively) were observed. More importantly, the sensor exhibited good selectivity for several possible interferences. The underlying reasons for the acceleration of the gas molecules adsorption, hence the fast sensor response, are the high specific surface area established by the star-shaped morphology, and compatible energy band alignment at the p/n interface coupled with the catalytic effect induced by Ag 2 O. Neighbouring plants can alter the susceptibility of high‐quality focal plants to herbivores by affecting herbivore patch choice. Herbivores can use plant odour to make patch‐scale foraging decisions from afar, but the actual information they rely on within complex plant odours is rarely defined. Revealing the information enabling patch choice by herbivores will provide the mechanistic link underpinning associational effects of plant neighbours arising from these foraging decisions.Here, our first aim was to test whether odour cues alone enable a mammalian herbivore to make patch choice decisions leading to predictable associational effects of neighbours on high‐quality focal plants. Our second aim was then to test whether artificial odour, designed to mimic the informative odour component within the whole odour profile of low‐quality neighbours, is as effective as real plants in influencing patch choice and associational refuge.We tested patch choice by African elephants, Loxodonta africana using a giant Y‐maze and real or artificial plant odours as the only cues for the neighbours of a high‐quality focal plant. We quantified the probability of various odour treatments being chosen in comparison with the odour of a focal plant alone.Compared with focal plants alone, we found that elephants were more likely to choose patches with the focal plant plus high‐quality neighbours of the same or different species, but less likely to choose patches with the focal plant plus low‐quality neighbours. We also demonstrated that an artificial subset of odours, designed to be informative, were as effective as real low‐quality neighbours in influencing patch choice and hence associational refuge to the focal plant.Our results demonstrate a key role of plant odour—and specifically informative components within complex odour profiles—in patch choice decisions by a mammalian herbivore, leading to plant associational effects on high‐quality focal plants. Understanding what olfactory information herbivores use when deciding which patches to visit or avoid, and how it affects focal plant susceptibility is important ecologically. Non‐random patch choice will not only affect individual fitness of herbivores, but also shape plant community dynamics through impacting plant survival and recruitment. Background: The fragrance and aroma of Rosaceae plants are complex traits influenced by a multitude of factors, with genetic variation standing out as a key determinant which is largely impacted by polyploidy. Polyploidy serves as a crucial evolutionary mechanism in plants, significantly boosting genetic diversity and fostering speciation. Objective: This review focuses on the Rosaceae family, emphasizing how polyploidy influences the production of volatile organic compounds (VOCs), which are essential for the aromatic characteristics of economically important fruits like strawberries, apples, and cherries. The review delves into the biochemical pathways responsible for VOC biosynthesis, particularly highlighting the roles of terpenoids, esters alcohols, aldehydes, ketones, phenolics, hydrocarbons, alongside the genetic mechanisms that regulate these pathways. Key enzymes, such as terpene synthases and alcohol acyltransferases, are central to this process. This review further explores how polyploidy and hybridization can lead to the development of novel metabolic pathways, contributing to greater phenotypic diversity and complexity in fruit aromas. It underscores the importance of gene dosage effects, isoenzyme diversity, and regulatory elements in determining VOC profiles. Conclusions: These findings provide valuable insights for breeding strategies aimed at improving fruit quality and aligning with consumer preferences. Chrysanthemums and wild chrysanthemums are herbs with high application value. As edible plants of the Asteraceae family, they have good antioxidant, anti-inflammatory and hepatoprotective properties. Chrysanthemums and wild chrysanthemums contain a wide variety of volatile organic compounds, and these volatile components are the main factors contributing to the flavor differences. Therefore, in this study, we investigated the volatile components of holland chrysanthemum from Bozhou, Anhui Province, Chu-chrysanthemum from Chuzhou, Anhui Province, Gong-chrysanthemums from Huangshan, Anhui Province, Huai-chrysanthemums from Jiaozuo, Henan Province, Hang-chrysanthemum from Hangzhou, Zhejiang Province, and wild chrysanthemum from Dabie Mountain by headspace–gas chromatography–ion mobility spectrometry (HS-GC-IMS) coupled with principal component analysis (PCA). The results showed that Chrysanthemum and wild chrysanthemum contain alcohols, esters, hydrocarbons, ketones, aldehydes, acids, camphor, pyrazines and furans. Among them, alcohols, esters and hydrocarbons accounted for more than 15%. It was hypothesized that 2-methyl-1-propanol, 2-methylbutanol, 1-hexanol in alcohols and hexyl acetate, 3-methylbutyl acetate and ethyl 2-methylpropanoate in esters might be the main reasons for the alcoholic and sweet flavors of chrysanthemum and chrysanthemum officinale. Based on the principal component analysis, cluster analysis with the Euclidean distance and similarity analysis of fingerprints, it was found that there were significant differences in the volatile components in chrysanthemums from different origins, among which the differences between Chu-chrysanthemum and Hang-chrysanthemum were the most significant. In addition, as a genus of wild chrysanthemum with the same species, it contains a richer variety of volatile organic compounds, and the content of hydrocarbons and alcohols is significantly higher than that of chrysanthemum. Background: Amomum tsao-ko is an important aromatic crop used in medicines and food. It can be categorized into three main types based on the fruit shape: long (L), oval (O), and round (R). However, limited information is available on the volatile substances present in differently shaped A. tsao-ko fruits. This study investigated the characteristics and biosynthesis of volatile organic compounds (VOCs) in fresh and dried A. tsao-ko fruits of different shapes using widely targeted volatilomics and transcriptome analyses. Results: In total, 978 VOCs, primarily terpenoids, esters, and heterocyclic compounds, were detected. The number of differentially accumulated volatile organic compounds (DAVOCs) in dried fruits of various shapes was significantly higher than that in fresh fruits, with terpenoids, esters, and heterocyclic compounds accounting for approximately 50% of the total DAVOCs. Notably, α-phellandrene, identified as a shared differential accumulated terpenoid across various fruit shapes, was detected in both fresh and dried fruits. Through transcriptome analysis, 40 candidate genes implicated in the terpenoid biosynthesis pathway were screened. An integrated analysis of the metabolome and transcriptome revealed that the structural genes HMGR-2, TPS7, TPS5-10, TPS21-3, TPS21-5, TPS21-6, TPS21-7, and TPS21-9, along with 81 transcription factors (including 17 NACs, 16 MYBs, 16 AP2/ERFs, 13 WRKYs, 13 bHLHs, and 6 bZIPs), co-regulate the biosynthesis of volatile terpenoids. Conclusions: This study expands our understanding of the volatile metabolism profile of A. tsao-ko and provides a solid foundation for future investigations of the mechanisms governing fruit quality. In order to study the characteristics of volatile organic compounds (VOCs) in Yantai city, VOCs chemical composition, concentration characteristics, ozone generation potential (OFP) and pollutant sources were analyzed based on VOCs monitoring data in Yantai in 2020 and 2022. Results indicated that the volume concentration of VOCs decreased by 12.4% from 2020 to 2022, which was attributed to the significant decline in the concentration of oxygen-containing volatile organic compounds (OVOCs) (decreased by --33.1%) with a stable concentration of ozone precursors (PAMS). Species concentration analysis showed that alkanes and aldehydes ranked first in the volume concentration of PAMS and OVOCs. The three components with the highest volume concentration were formaldehyde, ethane and propane, respectively, and the three components with the highest mass concentration were w-hexane, formaldehyde and propane, respectively. Time distribution characteristics displayed that the volume concentration of PAMS and OVOCs fluctuated greatly, and high concentrations were prone to appear in July and August. Total OFP value of Yantai city also showed a downward trend, decreasing by 14.0% compared with 2020, among which the OFP value of various types of VOCs was as follows % aldehydes > alkenes> alkanes > aromatics > ketones > alkynes, and the top three contribution values accounted for 88.2%. According to the calculated value of OFP, formaldehyde and acetaldehyde were always the top two contributors to the generation of O3 in the ambient are in Yantai city, and the ozone prevention and control in Yantai city should focus on the following five components % formaldehyde, acetaldehyde, 2-methyl-1, 3- butadiene, ethylene and propylene. Source analysis results showed that the VOCs in Yantai city came from aging are mass transport, in which formaldehyde and acetaldehyde were mainly from motor vehicle exhaust and man-made source. Aromatic hydrocarbons were mainly derived from vehicle exhaust and coal/biomass interaction in which motor vehicles had a more significant impact. In conclusion, this study provides a scientific basis for the formulation of VOCs emission and O3 pollution prevention and control measure. It is suggested that Yantai city should conduct accurate control of anthropogenic emissions (especially motor vehicles) and coal/biomass by combusting VOCs concentration characteristics, species characteristics, time distribution characteristics and chemical reactivity analytics, so as to improve the ambient are quality of Yantai city. In this study, seed-surface-associated bacteria from fresh fruits of Capsicum spp. were analyzed to explore potential isolates for biocontrol of phytopathogenic fungal strains. A total of 76 bacterial isolates were obtained from three different species of chili pepper (C. annuum L., C. pubescens R. & P., and C. chinense Jacq.), and two isolates were selected via mycelial growth inhibition assays based on their production of volatile organic compounds (VOCs) against six fungal strains. Genomic analysis identified these isolates as Bacillus altitudinis CH05, with a chromosome size of 3,687,823 bp and with 41.25% G+C, and Bacillus tropicus CH13, with a chromosome size of 5,283,706 bp and with 35.24% G+C. Both bacterial strains showed high mycelial growth inhibition capacities against Sclerotium rolfsii, Sclerotinia sp., Rhizoctonia solani, and Alternaria alternata but lower inhibition capacities against Colletotrichum gloesporoides and Fusarium oxysporum. VOC identification was carried out after 24 h of fermentation with 64 VOCs for B. altitudinis CH05 and 53 VOCs for B. tropicus CH13. 2,5-Dimethyl pyrazine and acetoin had the highest relative abundance values in both bacterial strains. Our findings revealed that seed-surface-associated bacteria on Capsicum spp. have the metabolic ability to produce VOCs for biocontrol of fungal strains and have the potential to be used in sustainable agriculture. Summary Climate change is disrupting floral traits that mediate mutualistic and antagonistic species interactions. Plastic responses of these traits to multiple shifting conditions may be adaptive, depending on natural selection in new environments. We manipulated snowmelt date over three seasons (3–11 d earlier) in factorial combination with growing‐season precipitation (normal, halved, or doubled) to measure plastic responses of volatile emissions and other floral traits in Ipomopsis aggregata. We quantified how precipitation and early snowmelt affected selection on traits by seed predators and pollinators. Within years, floral emissions did not respond to precipitation treatments but shifted with snowmelt treatment depending on the year. Across 3 yr, emissions correlated with both precipitation and snowmelt date. These effects were driven by changes in soil moisture. Selection on several traits changed with earlier snowmelt or reduced precipitation, in some cases driven by predispersal seed predation. Floral trait plasticity was not generally adaptive. Floral volatile emissions shifted in the face of two effects of climate change, and the new environments modulated selection imposed by interacting species. Securing a stable food supply and achieving sustainable agricultural production are essential for mitigating future food insecurity. Soil metabolomics is a promising tool for capturing soil status, which is a critical issue for future sustainable food security. This study aims to provide deeper insights into the status of soybean-grown fields under varying soil conditions over three years by employing comprehensive soil volatile organic compound (VOC) profiling, also known as soil volatilomics. Profiling identified approximately 200 peaks in agricultural fields. The soil of soybean-presented plots exhibited markedly higher VOC levels than those of non-soybean plots during the flowering season. Pentanoic acid, 2,2,4-trimethyl-3-carboxyisopropyl, isobutyl ester, a discriminative soil VOC, was identified through multivariate data analysis as a distinctively present VOC in fields with or without soybean plants during the flowering period. Soil VOC profiles exhibited strong correlations with soil-related omics datasets (soil ionome, microbiome, metabolome, and physics) and no significant correlations with root microbiome and rhizosphere chemicals. Photothermal catalytic oxidation emerges as a promising method for the removal of volatile organic compounds (VOCs). Herein, via sol-gel impregnation method, spinel CuMn2O4 was coated on attapulgite honeycombs with integrating biochar (BC) film as the second carrier, using chestnut shell as complexation agent. Various mass ratios of CuMn2O4 to chestnut shell was modulated to investigate the catalytic toluene degradation performance. Results indicated that the monolithic CuMn2O4/BC/honeycomb catalyst demonstrated superior photothermal catalytic toluene degradation with a low T90 (temperature at 90% degradation) of 263 °C when the mass ratio of CuMn2O4 to biomass was 1:4. The addition of BC film substantially increased the honeycomb's specific surface area and improved the photothermal conversion of spinel, leading to enhanced photothermal catalytic activity. Abstract Maintaining freshness and quality is crucial in the meat industry, as lipid oxidation can lead to undesirable odors, flavors, and potential health risks. Traditional methods for assessing meat freshness often involve time‐consuming and destructive techniques, highlighting the need for rapid, noninvasive approaches. Recent advancements in spectroscopic and chromogenic sensor array technologies have opened up new avenues for monitoring meat quality parameters, offering the potential for real‐time, accurate, and cost‐effective solutions. As thiobarbituric acid reactive substances (TBARS) value is a classic indicator of meat lipid oxidation, this study investigated the data fusion of near‐infrared spectroscopy (NIR) and paper chromogenic array (PCA) for monitoring ground beef TBARS. A standardized PCA was fabricated by photolithography with nine chemoresponsive dyes. Changes in ground beef volatile organic compounds during storage were captured in the shifts of PCA color patterns. Nippy, an open‐source Python module, was used for automated NIR spectra preprocessing. The optimal preprocessing pipeline was found by 10‐fold cross‐validation in machine learning model development. Among optimized models, partial least square regression showed the best performance in coefficient of determination (R2) of .9477, root mean squared error of prediction of 0.0545 mg malondialdehyde/kg meat, and residual prediction deviation of 4.3717. The promising result of this study indicated the potential for NIR and PCA combinations to monitor TBARS values for ground beef freshness assessment.

In the context of the energy transition and in order to fully manage the integration of renewable and/or low-carbon gases into the gas mix, these new renewable gases need to be characterized, including volatile organic compounds (VOCs) at trace levels that may have an impact on different stages of the gas chain event at low concentrations. This study focuses on sampling because it is the first step in any method for analyzing trace VOCs and its careful execution is essential to ensure reliable results even if the on-site conditions can be variable, such as the external temperature. The stabilization time, the effect of external temperature, and the impact of using an intermediate sample cylinder prior to transfer to tubes were hence studied in the laboratory using a standard gas mixture representative of renewable gases. The latter was also studied using a real sample. To perform this study, VOCs were sampled in Tenax® TA tubes and then analyzed by thermal desorption hyphenated to comprehensive two-dimensional gas chromatography–time-of-flight mass spectrometry. The results showed that 45 min were required to stabilize the sampling system and that external temperature had little influence, limited to the heaviest compounds. Finally, the use of a cylinder to temporarily collect gas prior to transfer to tubes led to a loss of compounds, particularly when the cylinder was stored before the transfer. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Lipids and volatile organic compounds (VOCs) are essential contributors to meat flavor. However, no studies to date have comprehensively explored the lipids and VOCs in raw pork from Ningxiang (NX) pigs and their hybrid breed Berkshire × Ningxiang (BN) pigs. This study aimed to identify the lipids and VOCs and reveal the crucial lipids for characteristic flavor formation. Samples were collected from the longissimus dorsi muscle of six NX and BN 8-month-old pigs each. The intramuscular fat (IMF) content of NX pork was 5.43%, almost twice that of BN pork (p <.01). Total 187 significantly different lipids were identified between NX and BN pork (variable importance in projection scores > 1, p <.05). Further analysis suggested 38 lipids were potential markers. Out of 66 identified VOCs, 16 key VOCs were screened both in NX and BN pork. Furtherly, hexanal-D, 2-methylbutanal, 3-methylbutanal, 1-penten-3-one, 1-octen-3-ol, and ethyl acetate-D were found to be key differential VOCs. Comparing with NX pork, BN pork significantly improved pungent odor. Correlation between the lipid markers and key VOCs demonstrated that phosphatidylethanolamine (PE), phosphatidylserine (PS), phosphatidylinositol (PI), phosphatidylcholine (PC), and triglyceride (TG) were identified as key differentiating compounds for characteristic flavor. Abstract Background The chestnut blight fungus, Cryphonectria parasitica, and its Cryphonectria hypovirus 1 (CHV1) comprise a useful model system to study fungus–virus interactions. CHV1 infection results in various phenotypic changes in the fungal host, including hypovirulence and other associated symptoms. Many studies have investigated the effects of hypoviral infection and how this infection affects physiological and biochemical states: however, no studies have examined volatile organic compounds (VOCs). Results This study characterized the global profile of VOCs released from C. parasitica, and by comparing CHV1-free with CHV1-infected isogenic strains, proved that CHV1 infection significantly affects the composition and levels of VOCs. We demonstrated that these VOC alterations were caused by viral regulation of the expression of fungal genes encoding enzymes responsible for the production of VOCs. The changed VOC profile resulting from CHV1 infection was more attractive to insects than the VOC profile from the virus-free strain, suggesting differences in the efficacy of fungal dissemination by the insect vector. Conclusions We characterized VOCs from C. parasitica and demonstrated that mycovirus (CHV1) infection affects fungal VOCs. We provided evidences that these alterations are caused by the modulation of the corresponding gene expression by CHV1 and resulted in changes in attractiveness to insects, suggesting the improved efficacy of hypovirulent C. parasitica for insect-borne dissemination. Abstract Consumer spray products (CSPs) are widely used in daily life, yet it is challenging to find products that fully disclose all components posing health risks. Existing studies primarily focus on product components or VOC quantities emitted during use. Therefore, this study aimed to measure the VOC concentrations emitted by CSPs at varying distances. 47 CSPs available in the Korean market were selected, spanning three spray groups: antiseptics/insecticides (11), aromatic deodorants (16), and coating/polishing agents (20). VOC in air samples were collected using Tenax TA tube at a distance of 1 and 3 m from the sprayed CSPs and then analyzed by thermal desorption–gas chromatography–mass spectrometry system. Discrepancies were found between labeled and actual product components. Aromatic deodorants exhibited the highest total VOCs (TVOCs), while antiseptic/insecticide sprays exhibited the lowest. In the antiseptic/insecticide group and coating/polishing agent group, benzene as a propellant had a maximum concentration (30.9 ± 25.6 ppb), and as trigger, its concentration was 33.7 ± 30.7 ppb. Quantitative analysis using advanced analytical instruments only explained 26.1 ± 20.4% of toluene-equivalent TVOCs, suggesting the presence of additional substances. Concentrations varied by distance due to substance volatility and usage. Maintaining a distance of at least 1 m from CSPs is recommended.

By systematically reviewing and summarizing relevant literature, and based on the theory of volatile organic compound produced by the decomposition of human remains, this paper explores the basic principle of the canine olfactory search technique for human remains. This paper also reviews the application of training canine search technique for human remains in forensic investigation by using human blood, tissue, cadaver putrefying fluid and odor substitutes as sniffing sources. The application prospect of canine olfactory search for human remains was prospected from the perspectives of detection of volatile organic compound during cadaver decay, development of odor substitutes and adsorption devices, and technology tactics used in canine training and use, to provide references for the relevant research of canine olfactory search for human remains in China.

The composition and concentration of volatile organic compounds (VOCs) in exhaled breath are closely related to human health and the analysis of VOCs by collecting human exhaled breath has been widely used in disease surveillance research. This article reviewed the collection, enrichment, and detection methods of exhaled VOCs, which can provide a reference for selecting appropriate technology for follow-up research. The exhaled breath collection devices mainly include sampling bags for mixed exhaled breath and biological volatile organic compound (Bio-VOC) samplers for alveolar air. The pre-enrichment equipment included thermal desorption (TD), solid-phase microextraction device (SPME), and needle trap device (NTD). The detection methods of exhaled VOCs include gas chromatography-mass spectrometry (GC-MS), proton transfer reaction mass spectrometry (PTR-MS), selective ion flow tube mass spectrometry (SIFT-MS), and electronic nose. At present, the collection and enrichment technology of exhaled breath is not mature yet, and its influence on the results of detection is lack of evaluation. In the future, the research on collection and enrichment technology of exhaled breath should be strengthened to further promote the application of exhaled breath in disease surveillance research.

Background Formaldehyde a commonly used embalming fluid for the preservation of cadavers, produces numerous short and long-term side effects on the students and staff working with it. Indoor plants have been shown to reduce atmospheric formaldehyde levels. The purpose of the study was to compare the efficacy of indoor plants in reducing formaldehyde levels in ambient air to levels deemed safe by WHO standards Methods The study was conducted in the storage room of the Anatomical dissection hall. 7 potted plants of one variety were kept in the storage room for 14 days and the Formaldehyde reading was measured using a VOC (Volatile Organic Compound) monitor. Then the same was done with no plant. This cycle was repeated 2 more times, with two different plant species. The three spieces of plants used for this study were as follows: Dracaena trifasciata, Epipremnum aureum, Spathiphyllum. Results The results were analysed and compared and it was determined that the effect of having a plant present versus having no plant present on the Formaldehyde concentration in the air was inconclusive as Dracaena trifasciata failed to reject the null hypothesis altogether (p-value>0.05), while Epipremnum aureum and Spathiphyllum rejected the null hypothesis (p-value Conclusion The efficacy of indoor plants in reducing formaldehyde levels in ambient air needs to be further explored and validated since all the prior studies conducted were in controlled environment and should be done in a real time scenario for its practical and beneficial uses.

Background: The chestnut blight fungus, Cryphonectria parasitica, and its Cryphonectria hypovirus 1 (CHV1) comprise a useful model system to study fungus–virus interactions. CHV1 infection results in various phenotypic changes in the fungal host, including hypovirulence and other associated symptoms. Many studies have investigated the effects of hypoviral infection and how this infection affects physiological and biochemical states: however, no studies have examined volatile organic compounds (VOCs). Results: This study characterized the global profile of VOCs released from C. parasitica, and by comparing CHV1-free with CHV1-infected isogenic strains, proved that CHV1 infection significantly affects the composition and levels of VOCs. We demonstrated that these VOC alterations were caused by viral regulation of the expression of fungal genes encoding enzymes responsible for the production of VOCs. The changed VOC profile resulting from CHV1 infection was more attractive to insects than the VOC profile from the virus-free strain, suggesting differences in the efficacy of fungal dissemination by the insect vector. Conclusions: We characterized VOCs from C. parasitica and demonstrated that mycovirus (CHV1) infection affects fungal VOCs. We provided evidences that these alterations are caused by the modulation of the corresponding gene expression by CHV1 and resulted in changes in attractiveness to insects, suggesting the improved efficacy of hypovirulent C. parasitica for insect-borne dissemination. Volatile organic compounds (VOCs) are representative indoor air pollutants that negatively affect the human body owing to their toxicity. One of the most promising methods for VOC removal is photocatalytic degradation using TiO2. In this study, the addition of carbon black (CB) and heavy metal nanoparticles (NPs) was investigated to improve the efficiency of a TiO2-based photocatalytic VOC decomposition system combined with ultrasonic atomization and ultraviolet irradiation, as described previously. Simple Summary: In this study, we screened a MYB transcription factor controlling the synthesis of linanol in Freesia hybrida. This transcription factor is functionally conservative and can play a role in regulating the expression of the linanol synthase gene in the model plant Arabidopsis, but the interaction with another bHLH type transcription factor eventually leads to different regulatory effects of the MYB regulator in Freesia hybrida and Arabidopsis. Acting as the most abundant and widely distributed volatile secondary metabolites in plants, terpenoids play crucial roles in diverse physiological regulations and metabolic processes. Terpene synthases play a decisive role in determining the composition and diversity of terpenoids. Though the regulation of terpene synthases has been extensively investigated across various plant species, limited studies have focused on the upstream transcriptional regulation of terpene synthases. In this study, we have identified linalool as the predominant volatile compound that is released gradually from Freesia hybrida flowers throughout flower blooming. In the context of the transcriptome, a typical MYB transcription factor, FhMYB108, was screened based on homologous gene comparison. FhMYB108 is capable of regulating the expression of FhTPS1, and both their expression levels showed gradual increase during flower opening. Moreover, FhMYB108 exerts a stimulatory effect on the transcription of Arabidopsis thaliana AtTPS14, while no significant increase in AtTPS14 expression is observed upon the stabilization of FhMYB108 in A. thaliana. The highly expressed AtMYC2 in A. thaliana could interact with FhMYB108 to suppress the activation of AtTPS14 by FhMYB108. The present study not only elucidates the regulatory mechanism underlying linalool synthesis but also discovers the synergistic effect of MYB and bHLH transcription factors in governing the biosynthesis of volatile terpenoids. Consumer spray products (CSPs) are widely used in daily life, yet it is challenging to find products that fully disclose all components posing health risks. Existing studies primarily focus on product components or VOC quantities emitted during use. Therefore, this study aimed to measure the VOC concentrations emitted by CSPs at varying distances. 47 CSPs available in the Korean market were selected, spanning three spray groups: antiseptics/insecticides (11), aromatic deodorants (16), and coating/polishing agents (20). VOC in air samples were collected using Tenax TA tube at a distance of 1 and 3 m from the sprayed CSPs and then analyzed by thermal desorption–gas chromatography–mass spectrometry system. Discrepancies were found between labeled and actual product components. Aromatic deodorants exhibited the highest total VOCs (TVOCs), while antiseptic/insecticide sprays exhibited the lowest. In the antiseptic/insecticide group and coating/polishing agent group, benzene as a propellant had a maximum concentration (30.9 ± 25.6 ppb), and as trigger, its concentration was 33.7 ± 30.7 ppb. Quantitative analysis using advanced analytical instruments only explained 26.1 ± 20.4% of toluene-equivalent TVOCs, suggesting the presence of additional substances. Profiles of the volatile organic compound (VOC) content of essential oils (EOs) extracted from young and old Juniperus communis L. needles were generated via gas chromatography combined with mass spectrometry (GC‐MS) and flame ionization detection (GC‐FID) and subsequently processed using multivariate statistical methods. These were then used to differentiate the EOs according to needle age and geographical origin. From a total 49 of VOCs identified, statistically significant differences (p<0.05) between young‐ and old‐needle EOs were found for 21 VOCs. Most of the EOs from the young needles showed higher (p<0.05) contents of α‐ and β‐pinene and sesquiterpenes (β‐ and γ‐elemene, germacrene D and B, α‐muurolene, and δ‐cadinene) and their oxygenated derivatives (α‐ and τ‐cadinol), while most of the monoterpenes (α‐thujene, sabinene, terpinolene, β‐myrcene, β‐phellandrene, and p‐cymene) were present in higher quantities (p<0.05) in the EOs from the old needles. The volatiles germacrene D, α‐ and β‐pinene, α‐cadinol, and sabinene were identified via stepwise and canonical discriminant analysis as the most valuable for EO discrimination according to needle age and geographical origin. Ozone pollution shows a trend of increasing, but the potential contribution of volatile organic compounds (VOCs) to ozone formation in the vertical direction is still unclear. The vertical distribution characteristics of VOCs and its impact on ozone formation were studied based the enhanced sounding data in the lower troposphere (0-1000 m) from October 17 to November 15, 2020 observed in the northern suburbs of Nanjing city, Jiangsu province. The results show that the volume fraction of VOCs ((73.4±26.1)×10-9 (50.4±20.3)×10-9) decreases with the increase of height, and alkanes account for the largest proportion (64.3%-71.6%) at each height, and the proportion of olefin (3.4%-9.9%) gradually decrease with the increase of height; there is no significant change in the proportion of aromatics, halohydrocarbons and acetylene; the VOCs accumulate in the lower layer in the morning and evening with a great gradient, and the proportion of alkane increases due to the traffic emissions and lower boundary layer; the VOCs profiles are uniform in the afternoon. Affected by atmospheric junction, the alkanes and olefin dominate the photochemical reactions in the mixing layer, with the loss rate of OH radicals (LOH) of 3.3 and 2.7s-1, accounting for 42.8% and 35.1%, respectively; alkanes and aromatics are the dominant species in the stable boundary layer and residual layer. The LOH and ozone formation potential (OFP) of VOCs in the afternoon mixing layer are positively correlated with the ozone volume fraction, which represent the relationship between local VOCs and ozone; however, there is no significant correlation between LOH, OFP and ozone in the stable boundary layer and residual layer in the morning; the contributions of VOCs components with high reaction activity to OFP are occurred in the low layer, and ethene and propene are the representative components; alkane makes greater contribution to the photochemical generation of ozone in the upper atmosphere, and the analysis result of X/E ratio reflects higher aging and the characteristics of regional atmospheric. Main conclusion: One of seven Solanum taxa studied displayed associations between pollen presence and floral scent composition and volume, suggesting buzz-pollinated plants rarely use scent as an honest cue for foraging pollinators. Floral scent influences the recruitment, learning, and behaviour of floral visitors. Variation in floral scent can provide information on the amount of reward available or whether a flower has been visited recently and may be particularly important in species with visually concealed rewards. In many buzz-pollinated flowers, tubular anthers opening via small apical pores (poricidal anthers) visually conceal pollen and appear similar regardless of pollen quantity within the anther. We investigated whether pollen removal changes floral scent composition and emission rate in seven taxa of buzz-pollinated Solanum (Solanaceae). We found that pollen removal reduced both the overall emission of floral scent and the emission of specific compounds (linalool and farnesol) in S. lumholtzianum. Our findings suggest that in six out of seven buzz-pollinated taxa studied here, floral scent could not be used as a signal by visitors as it does not contain information on pollen availability. In this study, the flavor characteristics and physicochemical properties of salted egg yolk (SEY) under different cooking methods (steaming/baking/microwaving) were investigated. The microwave-treated SEY exhibited the highest levels of salt content, cooking loss, lightness, and b* value, as well as the highest content of flavor amino acids. A total of 31, 27, and 29 volatile compounds were detected after steaming, baking, and microwave treatments, respectively, covering 10 chemical families. The partial least squares discriminant analysis confirmed that 21 compounds, including octanol, pyrazine, 2-pentyl-furan, and 1-octen-3-ol, were the key volatile compounds affecting the classification of SEY aroma. The electronic nose revealed a sharp distinction in the overall flavor profile of SEY with varying heat treatments. However, no dramatic differences were observed in terms of fatty acid composition. Microwave treatment was identified as presenting a promising approach for enhancing the aroma profile of SEY. Metal-oxide-based gas sensors are extensively utilized across various domains due to their cost-effectiveness, facile fabrication, and compatibility with microelectronic technologies. The copper (Cu)-based multifunctional polymer-enhanced sensor (CuMPES) represents a notably tailored design for non-invasive environmental monitoring, particularly for detecting diverse gases with a low concentration. In this investigation, the Cu-CuO/PEDOT nanocomposite was synthesized via a straightforward chemical oxidation and vapor-phase polymerization. Comprehensive characterizations employing X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS), scanning electron microscopy (SEM), X-ray diffraction (XRD), and micro Raman elucidated the composition, morphology, and crystal structure of this nanocomposite. Gas-sensing assessments of this CuMPES based on Cu-CuO/PEDOT revealed that the response current of the microneedle-type CuMPES surpassed that of the pure Cu microsensor by nearly threefold. The electrical conductivity and surface reactivity are enhanced by poly (3,4-ethylenedioxythiophene) (PEDOT) polymerized on the CuO-coated surface, resulting in an enhanced sensor performance with an ultra-fast response/recovery of 0.3/0.5 s. Bacteria produce a plethora of volatile organic compounds (VOCs) into the atmosphere as a means of interacting with their habitats, as well as for intra- and interkingdom communication, and to survive and thrive in nature and inside their hosts. Campylobacter, which is commonly found in poultry and ruminants, has demonstrated remarkable endurance in aquatic settings, making it one of the world's most hazardous foodborne pathogens that kill thousands of humans every year. In the present work, the VOCs released by both thermophilic (C. jejuni, C. coli, and C. lari) and non-thermophilic (C. fetus) Campylobacter of clinical significance, which were influenced by nutrient composition (media) and growth phase, were profiled using an active sampling approach, with active charcoal adsorbent and gas chromatography-mass spectrometry. Alcohols and ketones were detected only in the thermophilic Campylobacter strains, C. jejuni subsp. jejuni (1-heptadecanol; 1,8-nonadien-3-ol; 3,7,11-trimethyl-3-dodecanol; 1s,4R,7R,11R- 1,3,4,7-tetramethyltricyclo [5.3.1.0(4,11)] undec-2-en-8-one; and isophorone), C. coli (isophorone and 3,5-bis(1,1-dimethylethyl)-phenol), and C. lari (3,7,11-trimethyl-3- dodecanol and 1s,4R,7R,11R-1,3,4,7-tetramethyltricyclo [5.3.1.0(4,11)] undec-2-en-8- one) between early stationary and stationary growth phases. The non-thermophilic C. fetus produced only a range of unidentified compounds that need to be investigated further in the future. The results from the principal component analysis showed distinctive clustering of VOC markers between the four bacteria taxa and within the strains of C. jejuni, including distinguishable groupings of VOCs throughout the growth phase of each bacterium and between different culture media. This demonstrates the influence of bacterial growth and media composition on the volatilome of the studied Campylobacter spp. Overall, the VOC profiling of these foodborne pathogens, under influencing factors of growth phase and media, paves the way for future rapid identification of Campylobacter spp. in food matrices. The maize weevil, Sitophilus zeamais Motschulsky, is a hidden pest that presents serious risk to grain quality during postharvest storage. Lipid-derived volatile detection is considered a key reference for early prediction of S. zeamais infestation. However, the exact compositions of fatty acids and volatile organic compounds (VOCs) in S. zeamais -infested wheat are yet to be determined. In this study, we aimed to explore the effect of S. zeamais infestation on lipid metabolism in wheat infested with S. zeamais eggs (4 days), larvae (20 days), pupae (35 days), and adults (45 days). Compared to those in the control group, the activities of lipid oxidation enzymes, such as lipase, lipoxygenase, and alcohol dehydrogenase, increased by 82.73%, 105.12%, and 487.86%, respectively, during the storage period of 1 life cycle of S. zeamais. Additionally, the fatty acid composition of S. zeamais -infested wheat was significantly altered (palmitic acid [1.10-fold], oleic acid [1.07-fold], and linoleic acid [0.95-fold]). Furthermore, 91 VOCs were identified in all wheat samples; then, multivariate statistical analyses categorized these samples into 4 groups: uninfested, longer storage, lightly infested, and heavily infested. Moreover, 31, 26, and 45 potential VOCs were identified to distinguish uninfested wheat from those in the other 3 groups. These results demonstrated that S. zeamais infestation induces an elevation in lipid-related enzymatic activities, which potentially leads to a decrease in lipid content alongside the production of specific VOCs (undecan-4-olide, heptaldehyde, and 2-nonenal). Cancer therapy is often associated with severe side effects such as drug induced weight loss, also known as chemotherapy-induced cachexia. The aim of this study was to investigate the effects of a multispecies probiotic (OMNi-BiOTiC® 10 AAD) in a chemotherapy mouse model. A total of 24 male BALB/c mice were gavage-fed with the probiotic formulation or water, once a day for 3 weeks. In the third week, the mice received intraperitoneal cyclophosphamide. At euthanasia, the organs were dissected, and serum was sampled for cytokine analysis. Tight junction components, myosin light chain kinase, mucins, and apoptosis markers were detected in the ileum and colon using histological analyses and qRT-PCR. Lipolysis was analyzed by enzymatic activity assay, Western blotting analyses, and qRT-PCR in WAT. The fecal microbiome was measured with 16S-rRNA gene sequencing from stool samples, and fecal volatile organic compounds analysis was performed using gas chromatography/mass spectrometry. The probiotic-fed mice exhibited significantly less body weight loss and adipose tissue wasting associated with a reduced CGI58 mediated lipolysis. They showed significantly fewer pro-inflammatory cytokines and lower gut permeability compared to animals fed without the probiotic. The colons of the probiotic-fed animals showed lower inflammation scores and less goblet cell loss. qRT-PCR revealed no differences in regards to tight junction components, mucins, or apoptosis markers. No differences in microbiome alpha diversity, but differences in beta diversity, were observed between the treatment groups. Taxonomic analysis showed that the probiotic group had a lower relative abundance of Odoribacter and Ruminococcus-UCG014 and a higher abundance of Desulfovibrio. VOC analysis yielded no significant differences. The results of this study indicate that oral administration of the multispecies probiotic OMNi-BiOTiC® 10 AAD could mitigate cyclophosphamide-induced chemotherapy side effects.

Due to the majority of time people spent indoors, indoor air quality is not only critical to people's health, comfort, but can also significantly influence occupants perception on indoor environment. Air quality is closely related to many factors including thermal parameters, pollutant concentrations, and ventilation performance. However, the current building indoor air quality evaluation method is based the objective measurement of indoor parameters, without considering occupants’ subjective perception. This paper is aimed at summarizing a profound review on the PAQ evaluation method. Comparisons among various PAQ evaluating methods with advantages, similarities and differences were conducted. Analysis of literatures about indoor air quality in Chinese residential buildings field is also summarized, and discussion on the subjective influence of temperature and relative humidity, ventilation performance, volatile organic compounds (VOCs) concentration, and particulate matters on perceived air quality is carried out.

Abstract Introduction Considering the adverse carcinogenic and non-carcinogenic health effects of Volatile Organic Compounds (VOC) and specially Benzene, Toluene, Ethylbenzene and Xylenes (BTEX) which are widely used in vehicle manufacturing industry, it is clear that monitoring and control of occupational exposure to these substances is of utmost significance. More often than not the studies on occupational exposure to VOCs in vehicle manufacturing industry—specifically BTEX—have been carried out exclusively in paint shop units. The purpose of this study was to assess occupational BTEX exposure & health risk in different units of a vehicle manufacturing industry. Material and methods Foam injection unit (FIU), gluing unit (GU), repair shop unit (RSU), molding unit (MU) as well as paint shop units (PSU) were selected for this study. Sampling and analysis were conducted based on National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH) 1501 guidelines by utilizing MSA personal sampling pumps set to 0.2 l/m and Gas Chromatography equipped with Flame Ionization Detector (GC-FID). Risk characterization and assessment was performed using Environmental Protection Agency Risk Assessment Information System (EPA RAIS). Results and conclusion The results revealed that the concentration of benzene in gluing and paint shop units was above occupational exposure limits. Carcinogenic risk levels in 8 out of 10 units registered in the 1E-2 to 1E-4 range, and only two units registered a risk level below EPA’s acceptable risk level (10–6). The highest risk levels were measured in gluing, paint shop and repair shop units. Furthermore, the total non-carcinogenic hazard quotient was measured higher than 1 in 8 out of 10 studied units. Considering the abundance and wide use of VOCs -most notably BTEX- and the adverse carcinogenic and non-carcinogenic health effects of these compounds, it is advised to: change the type of paint used in paint shops, improve the existing ventilation systems, develop new and more efficient ventilation systems and conduct consistent training.

To reduce the risk of N-nitrosamines in deli meat products, this study formulated a novel non-contact N-nitrosamines inhibiting preservative IV (NIP-IV) consisting of biocontrol bacteria and plant essential oils (EOs) (Stenotrophomonas rhizophila SR-1 + Paenibacillus provencensis PP-2 + Bacillus subtilis CF-3+ cinnamon EO + grapefruit EO). Luncheon pork, spiced beef, and red sausage were taken as representatives of typical deli meat products and used to validate the effectiveness of NIP-IV in inhibiting N-nitroso dimethylamine (NDMA) production. The results showed that NIP-IV restrain protein degradation and lipid oxidation in deli meat products and effectively control microbial activity. Biogenic amines, such as phenethylamine, spermidine, cadaverine, and tyramine, were reduced. The conversion of nitrite to NDMA in deli meats was effectively inhibited by NIP-IV. Volatile organic compounds were the key to excellent NIP-IV non-contact preservation. Butyric acid, 3-methylbutanoic acid, benzaldehyde, d-limonene, and (E)-cinnamaldehyde were significantly negatively correlated with NDMA in deli meat products.

The accumulation of carbon dioxide (CO2) within enclosed spaces, along with volatile organic compounds, under certain humidity, temperature, and ventilation conditions is associated with detrimental human health symptoms such as fatigue. Color-based chemical sensing is a promising approach to detect CO2 levels relevant to indoor air quality through producing fast, quantifiable output visible to the naked eye. In a prior work, a colorimetric gas sensor was fabricated through synthesizing the metal-organic framework, ZIF-8, as the adsorbent, followed by post-synthetic mixing with a dye, phenol red (PSP), and primary amine, ethylenediamine (ED). While this sensor (termed PSP-ED/ZIF-8) maintained its structural integrity in atmospheric conditions and exhibited an increasing fuchsia-to-yellow color change with increasing CO2 levels in dry environment, the colorimetric response greatly suffered in the presence of humid CO2. In this work, a significantly improved colorimetric CO2 sensor (referred to as ED/PSP:ZIF-8) is accomplished through directly incorporating phenol red in the ZIF-8 metal and linker precursor solutions and then blending with ethylenediamine. MATLAB-generated color distributions and in-situ ultraviolet-visible (UV-Vis) spectroscopic studies quantitatively demonstrate an enhanced colorimetric gas response of ED/PSP:ZIF-8 compared to that of PSP-ED/ZIF-8 across an important range of CO2 for indoor air quality monitoring (500 – 3500 ppm) and across a range of humidity. The new sensor also exhibits high selectivity to CO2 compared to select volatile organic compounds, such as acetone and ethanol, which contribute to human health symptoms experienced indoors. The enhanced performance is attributed to the proposed incorporation of phenol red within ZIF-8, while maintaining the chemical stability of the MOF.

Selectivity and enhanced response remain an issue in gaseous acetone sensing. This report demonstrates MoS2 on MXene (Ti3C2Tx) contact based on a low-cost flexible sensor for selective detection of acetone using principle component analysis and binary logistic regression. The piezotronic effect enhances the response of the sensor. The fabricated acetone sensor exhibited an excellent response of ∼5.84% at lower concentrations of acetone ranging from 5 to 30 ppm at room temperature (25 °C). The sensor's response values with (5%) and without applied external strain were calculated to be approximately 5.84 and 7.21%, respectively. This suggested an increment in the sensing performance under the applied external strain with an improved response time (448 s). A detailed study is presented in terms of comparative performance of MoS2 and MXene/MoS2 under strained and unstrained conditions. Principle component analysis and binary logistic regression techniques were used to successfully selectively detect acetone among other eight VOC (volatile organic compound) (toluene, benzene, isopropyl alcohol, formaldehyde, hydrogen sulfide, dimethyl sulfide, ethanol, and methanol) gases. A real-time breath analyzer is presented wherein an artificial breath consisting of different humidities and acetone was created, and acetone was sensed using the fabricated sensor. Finally, a proof of concept for the flexible bracelet is presented for the on-site detection of acetone levels in human breath to monitor diabetes at the point-of-care setting. Over the past two decades, several headspace collection techniques have been used to detect and identify volatile organic compounds (VOCs) emitted by plants, pests, air, and soil. Volatiles emitted by pests and infected plants are usually found at low concentrations. The important challenge is to be able to capture an exact collection of relative quantities of the relevant VOCs. Herewe present an innovative headspace collecting device (HSCD) for sampling VOCs, which ensures an exact regulation of mass flow velocity and collected total gas volume allowing besides qualitative analysis of collected VOCs, an exact comparison of their relative quantities in plant or insect headspace samples. The HSCD possess six parallel odor collection systems each consisting of a digital mass flow detector and controller connected to a vacuum pump, which are mounted in a trolley suitcase, connected by tubes, and wired electrically. The programming of the channels, can be done by a digital control unit. Using the HSCD, VOCs emitted by the brown marmorated stink bug (BMSB), Halyomorpha halys, from its different developmental stages including egg, nymphal stages, nymphal exuvia, and adults were collected on thermal desorption tubes and analyzed using an automated thermal desorber connected to a gas chromatography-mass spectrometry system. Forty-five VOCs were identified in total, whichmainly consisted of tridecane (4.36- 69.33%), E-2-decenal (4.24-26.48%), 2-undecenal (0.63-50.03%), and E-4-oxo-2-hexenal (1.22-20.58%). The random forest analysis revealed three different chemical patterns among BMSB life stages samples. In conclusion, these results indicate that the new developed HSCD, a mobile, easy to use, and reliable instrument, has a high potential to sample relevant VOCs of a specific life stage of an insect both qualitatively and quantitatively. It was demonstrated that this information can be used for identifying specific chemical signatures, which fit to specific life stages of the BMSB, and may be used as biomarker for on-site detection of this pest e.g. in shipping containers or agricultural areas. This paper presents a new scheme for readout of a photoionization detector (PID) that utilizes the ionization luminescence of target gases in helium plasma to generate an output signal. Our signal readout method is based on processing the recorded video and correlating the light peak intensity with the sample injection time and concentration. We successfully demonstrated the feasibility of a colorimetric readout‐based photoionization detector coupled with a gas chromatography column by detecting a mixture of non‐polar compounds (alkanes) and two polar compounds (acetone and ethanol). The different immune system cells communicate and coordinate a response using a complex and evolved language of cytokines and chemokines. These cellular interactions carry out multiple functions in distinct cell types with numerous developmental outcomes. Despite the plethora of different cytokines and their cognate receptors, there is a restricted number of signal transducers and activators to control immune responses. Herein, we report on a new class of immunomodulatory signaling molecules based on volatile molecules (VMs, namely, volatile organic compounds [VOCs]), by which they can affect and/or control immune cell behavior and transcriptomic profile without any physical contact with other cells. The study demonstrates the role of VMs by analyzing non‐contact cell communication between normal and cancerous lung cells and U937 monocytes, which are key players in the tumor microenvironment. Integrated transcriptome and proteome analyses showed the suggested regulatory role of VMs released from normal and cancer cells on neighboring monocytes in several molecular pathways, including PI3K/AKT, PPAR, and HIF‐1. Presented data provide an initial platform for a new class of immunomodulatory molecules that can potentially mirror the genomic and proteomic profile of cells, thereby paving the way toward non‐invasive immunomonitoring. In present study, we synthesized pure hydroxyapatite and Fe-substituted hydroxyapatites using calcium oxide, phosphoric acid, and iron chloride as precursors via a liquid-phase reaction and compared their performances as catalysts in the oxidative decomposition of volatile organic compounds (VOCs) for the first time. The morphology, crystallinity, chemical structure and surface state, surface adsorption properties of the synthesized hydroxyapatites were systemically investigated using powder scanning electron microscopy, X-ray diffraction, inductively coupled plasma atomic emission spectroscopy, Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy, solid-state UV–visible spectroscopy, acidic/basic gas adsorption characterization, electron spin resonance spectroscopy, in-situ diffuse reflectance infrared Fourier transform spectroscopy. The results revealed that the Fe-substituted apatite exhibits higher catalytic activity towards the oxidative decompositions of both ethyl acetate and toluene. Since increased adsorbed amounts of ethyl acetate and toluene with an increase in the Fe content of the Fe-substituted apatites were observed, we suggest that not only the radical generation and acidity/basicity, but also the surface adsorption of VOCs play important roles in achieving the superior catalytic activity of the Fe-substituted apatites. Furthermore, it was also found that an excess exchange of Fe ions can reduce the number of basic sites and thus hinder the catalytic activity towards the further oxidation of VOCs. Energy-based surgical instruments produce surgical smoke, which contains harmful byproducts, such as polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons, volatile organic compounds, particulate matter, and viable microorganisms. The research setting has shifted from the laboratory to the operating room. However, significant heterogeneity in the methods of detection and placement of samplers, diversity in the tissue operated on, and types of surgeries tested has resulted in variability in detected levels and composition of surgical smoke. State regulation limiting surgical smoke exposure through local evacuators is expanding but has yet to reach the national regulatory level. However, most studies have not shown levels above standard established limits but relatively short bursts of high concentrations of these harmful by-products. This review highlights the limitations of the current research and unsupported conclusions while also suggesting further areas of interest that need more focus to improve Occupational Safety and Health Administration guidelines. • PdPtV nanoparticles (NPs) are synthesized using the oil-phase co-reduction strategy. • The PdPtV/CeO 2 −ZrO 2 catalyst performs the best in ethylbenzene (EB) oxidation. • PdPtV/CeO 2 −ZrO 2 shows large EB adsorption capacity, good reducibility, and strong surface acidity. • TPD and in situ DRIFTS are used to study the reversible poisoning of PdPtV/CeO 2 −ZrO 2 by SO 2. • V doping to PdPt NPs protects the active PdPt sites from being poisoned by SO 2. The PdPtVO x /CeO 2 −ZrO 2 (PdPtVO x /CZO) catalysts were obtained by using different approaches, and their physical and chemical properties were determined by various techniques. Catalytic activities of these materials in the presence of H 2 O or SO 2 were evaluated for the oxidation of ethylbenzene (EB). The PdPtVO x /CZO sample exhibited high catalytic activity, good hydrothermal stability, and reversible sulfur dioxide-poisoning performance, over which the specific reaction rate at 160°C, turnover frequency at 160°C (TOF Pd or Pt), and apparent activation energy were 72.6 mmol/(g Pt ⋅sec) or 124.2 mmol/(g Pd ⋅sec), 14.2 sec−1 (TOF Pt) or 13.1 sec−1 (TOF Pd), and 58 kJ/mol, respectively. The large EB adsorption capacity, good reducibility, and strong acidity contributed to the good catalytic performance of PdPtVO x /CZO. Catalytic activity of PdPtVO x /CZO decreased when 50 ppm SO 2 or (1.0 vol.% H 2 O + 50 ppm SO 2) was added to the feedstock, but was gradually restored to its initial level after the SO 2 was cut off. The good reversible sulfur dioxide-resistant performance of PdPtVO x /CZO was associated with the facts: (i) the introduction of SO 2 leads to an increase in surface acidity; (ii) V can adsorb and activate SO 2 , thus accelerating formation of the SO x 2− (x = 3 or 4) species at the V and CZO sites, weakening the adsorption of sulfur species at the PdPt active sites, and hence protecting the PdPt active sites to be not poisoned by SO 2. EB oxidation over PdPtVO x /CZO might take place via the route of EB → styrene → phenyl methyl ketone → benzaldehyde → benzoic acid → maleic anhydride → CO 2 and H 2 O. The binary metal oxide-based catalysts have been proven to exhibit superior catalytic performances than their single metal oxides. As active supports, the physical and chemical properties of metal oxides would influence the chemical and electronic interactions with noble metal nanoparticles. By precise control of the composition and structure of metal oxides, the synergistic interaction between noble metals and transition metal oxides is expected to be realized. Herein, a novel hierarchical structured mCeO2 NR/Mn3O4/Pt catalysts were designed for low-temperature toluene combustion. The mCeO2 NR/Mn3O4 composites were fabricated by a simple and effective two-step sequential hydrothermal synthesis approach. After subsequent loading of Pt nanoparticles over mCeO2 NR/Mn3O4 by impregnation and reduction methods, the mCeO2 NR/Mn3O4/Pt catalysts with hierarchical structure were successively synthesized. The catalytical performances of the catalyst were evaluated by the toluene oxidation reaction. It was observed that the catalytic activities of the catalysts were closely related with the contents of Pt and Mn3O4, and mCeO2 NR/Mn3O4/Pt with 2.1% Mn and 0.45% Pt exhibited the greatest catalytic activity (T95 = 165 °C) toward the oxidation of toluene. The apparent activation energy for toluene oxidation with mCeO2 NR/Mn3O4/Pt (2.1% Mn) was as low as 35.3 kJ/mol. The improvement of the catalytical performance was due to the synergistic effect between CeO2 and Mn3O4 that led to the increase of oxygen vacancies and the enhancement of redox capacity, and the good dispersion of Pt active sites over the mCeO2 NR/Mn3O4. Nymphaea 'Eldorado', a valuable water lily, is a well-known fragrant plant in China. Studying the temporal and spatial characteristics of the floral components of this plant can provide a reference for the further development and utilization of water lily germplasm resources. In this study, headspace solid-phase microextraction (HS-SPME) combined with gas chromatography–mass spectrometry (GC-MS) was used to explore the types and relative contents of floral components at different flowering stages (S1: bud stage; S2: initial-flowering stage; S3: full-flowering stage; S4: end-flowering stage) and in different floral organs of N. 'Elidorado', combined with the observation of the microscopic structure of petals. A total of 60 volatile organic compounds (VOCs) were detected at different flowering stages, and there were significant differences in floral VOCs at different flowering stages and in different flower organs. The volatile compounds of N. 'Eldorado' can be divided into seven chemical classes,, namely, alkenes, alcohols, esters, aldehydes, ketones, alkanes, and others; the most common were alkenes and alkanes. A total of 39, 44, 47, and 42 volatile compounds were detected at S1, S2, S3, and S4. The VOCs present in high concentrations include benzaldehyde, benzyl alcohol, benzyl acetate, trans-α-bergamotene, α-curcumene, cis-α-farnesene, and so on. The types and total contents of volatiles at the full-flowering stage were higher than at other flowering stages. Comparing the VOCs in different parts of flower organs, it was found that the contents of alcohols, esters, and aldehydes were greatest in the petals, the alkenes in stamens were abundant with a relative content of up to 54.93%, and alkanes in the pistil were higher than in other parts. The types and total contents of volatiles in the stamens of N. 'Eldorado' were higher than those in other flower organs; they were the main part releasing fragrance. The observation of petal microstructure revealed that the size and quantity of the papillae on the epidermises of petals, the number of intracellular plastids, and the aggregates of floral components (osmophilic matrix granules) were significantly higher at the full-flowering stage than at the other flowering stages. This study suggested the main flowering stage and location at which the floral VOCs are released by N. Introduction: Considering the adverse carcinogenic and non-carcinogenic health effects of Volatile Organic Compounds (VOC) and specially Benzene, Toluene, Ethylbenzene and Xylenes (BTEX) which are widely used in vehicle manufacturing industry, it is clear that monitoring and control of occupational exposure to these substances is of utmost significance. More often than not the studies on occupational exposure to VOCs in vehicle manufacturing industry—specifically BTEX—have been carried out exclusively in paint shop units. The purpose of this study was to assess occupational BTEX exposure & health risk in different units of a vehicle manufacturing industry. Material and methods: Foam injection unit (FIU), gluing unit (GU), repair shop unit (RSU), molding unit (MU) as well as paint shop units (PSU) were selected for this study. Sampling and analysis were conducted based on National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH) 1501 guidelines by utilizing MSA personal sampling pumps set to 0.2 l/m and Gas Chromatography equipped with Flame Ionization Detector (GC-FID). Risk characterization and assessment was performed using Environmental Protection Agency Risk Assessment Information System (EPA RAIS). Results and conclusion: The results revealed that the concentration of benzene in gluing and paint shop units was above occupational exposure limits. Carcinogenic risk levels in 8 out of 10 units registered in the 1E-2 to 1E-4 range, and only two units registered a risk level below EPA's acceptable risk level (10–6). The highest risk levels were measured in gluing, paint shop and repair shop units. Furthermore, the total non-carcinogenic hazard quotient was measured higher than 1 in 8 out of 10 studied units. Considering the abundance and wide use of VOCs -most notably BTEX- and the adverse carcinogenic and non-carcinogenic health effects of these compounds, it is advised to: change the type of paint used in paint shops, improve the existing ventilation systems, develop new and more efficient ventilation systems and conduct consistent training. Highlights: In this paper, we report on the levels of occupational exposure workers encounter on a daily basis to a specific group of Volatile Organic Compounds (VOC): Benzene, Toluene, Ethylbenzene and Xylene(s) (BTEX) in various sections of a vehicle manufacturing industry and the resulting health risks. Reviewing previous studies revealed that as a result of low occupational exposure to BTEX in vehicle manufacturing industry, more often than not the studies on said compounds and the ensuing health effects were exclusively carried out in paint shop units, ignoring health risks in other units & creating the assumption that health risks in other units are negligible. The purpose of this study was to assess occupational BTEX exposure and its associated health risk in different units of a vehicle manufacturing industry, including foam injection unit (FIU), gluing unit (GU), repair shop unit (RSU), molding unit (MU) as well as paint shop units (PSU). Revealing the possibility of exposure to BTEX not only in paint shop units but also other previously disregarded units, the health risk calculated in some units such as gluing unit was higher than the EPA acceptable risk range (10-4). Moreover, cancer risk levels of molding (Unit No 6) and repair shop (Unit No 7) units registered in the 10-4 to 10-2 range despite meeting the TLV-TWA (0.174 PPM and 0.449 PPM respectively), suggesting the need for implementation of a health risk assessment in conjunction with exposure assessment.
