IntroductionFood waste (FW) represents a significant social and environmental problem, with 1.3 billion tons of food wasted yearly worldwide. Even if consumers are increasingly aware of the phenomenon, it remains relevant, and understanding the behaviors of specific target audience segments appears instrumental to the planning of effective interventions. To this end, we designed an observational study to investigate, throughout an online questionnaire, FW-related habits of university students in a Southern Italian region.MethodsA representative sample of 431 students from the University of Catanzaro Magna Graecia completed an online survey aimed at investigate FW related behaviors. A descriptive analysis was performed on the whole cohort, and a formal statistical analysis was carried out after excluding responders who had not correctly followed the survey instructions (n = 85). Differences were assessed by chi square (χ2) tests. A food wasting score was generated, and differences in the score values were analyzed by Student T-test. Linear and multiple regression analyses were performed to identify factors contributing to the score.ResultsOverall, the results of our survey show a high prevalence of virtuous behaviors in the food purchasing phase; while, at home, less than 50% of respondents apply easy-to-implement waste prevention rules. The statistical analysis showed that the major determinants of FW were: no direct involvement in grocery shopping and male gender. Indeed, even if we observed several significant differences comparing subgroups based on established or putative determinants of FW behaviors, none survived matching for group size, gender and relevant food managing (shopping, storing, cooking) habits. The only exception was the more appropriate handling of “use by” products by respondents who received structured nutrition teaching, as opposed to students whose academic courses do not include this subject (adjusted p = 0.008).ConclusionOur data suggest that young adults are trying to implement strategies to reduce FW, even if there is room for improvement, particularly in the storage phase. Extending nutrition education to all university programs may be helpful in reaching this goal.

Municipal solid waste management is a global concern due to the growth rate of population and urbanization. This paper aims to determine the possibility of utilization of municipal solid wastes such as fired clay brick powder (FCBP), eggshell powder (ESP), and recycled glass powder (RGP) for the stabilization of aeolian sand. Using such green binders can eliminate the perils associated with inappropriate waste disposal. Different combinations of FCBP, ESP, and RGP were added to the soil, and two activators (KOH and NaOH) were used to study the effects on its engineering and chemical properties. The effects of various parameters were investigated based on unconfined compression strength tests (UCS), pH tests, and scanning electron microscopy (SEM) tests. The results revealed that using all of these three precursors leads to the co-existence of calcium silicate hydrate (C-S-H) gel with the geopolymeric gel (N-A-S-H) and provides the highest UCS value. According to the obtained results, NaOH had a better ability to dissolve the precursors' particles than KOH, resulting in better polymerization. The optimum composites found in the research had a 91-day UCS of 5.32 MPa, which are suitable for the base material in pavement construction. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

The pineapple fruit when harvested generates a large amount of residual biomass; this biomass can be used to generate value-added products such as cellulose nanofibers. This study was focused on the isolation of CNF from pineapple leaves after oxidation pretreatment with 2,2,6,6-tetramethylpireridine-1-oxyl, followed by mechanical deconstruction of the fibers via combination of grinding and microfluidization process. One and two microfluidization passes were applied to bleached and unbleached fibers, respectively. The implications of these findings are that during the production process it is possible to reduce the amount of chemicals needed for bleaching and the energy involved in the mechanical microfluidization process. Such process yielded corresponding fibril lengths and widths in the range of 481–746 nm and 16–48 nm. The respective electrostatic charges, as measured by zeta potentials, were −41 mV and −31 mV. As expected, the CNF crystallinity was higher than that of the starting material, especially for the cellulose. However, the thermal stability was reduced, showing two degradative processes due to the chemical modification of the fibers. The CNF produced from pineapple leaves has a potential to be used like biomaterial in diverse applications while representing a viable alternative to producers, which face serious environmental and health challenges given the large volume of biomass that is otherwise left in the fields as waste.
