Backgrounds: The impact of off-duty hours mechanical thrombectomy on outcomes remains a subject of controversy. The impacts of off-duty hours on procedures are influenced by various factors, but the most critical one is the time delay in initiating the procedure after the patient's arrival at the emergency room. Recently, a report suggested that the impact of time delay on post-procedural outcomes is evident in patients who arrive at the emergency room within 6 h of symptom onset, referred to as the "early window." We hypothesized that the impact of procedure delays on outcomes during off duty-hours would be most significant within this early window. This study aimed to investigate the impact of door-to-puncture time (DTPT) delays in patients who underwent mechanical thrombectomy for acute ischemic stroke (AIS) during off-duty hours in both the early and late time windows. Methods: We investigated patients who presented to the emergency center between 2014 and 2022. Among a total of 6,496 AIS patients, we selected those who underwent mechanical thrombectomy within 24 h of the onset of acute anterior circulation occlusion. The eligible patients were divided into two groups: those who arrived within 6 h of symptom onset and received the procedure within 8 h (early window), and those who received the procedure between 8 h and 24 h after symptom onset (late window). The study assessed the association between the onset to puncture time in each group and poor outcomes, measured by the modified Rankin scores(mRs) at 90 days. Furthermore, the study analyzed the impact of receiving the procedure during off-hours in both the early and late windows on outcomes. Specifically, the analysis focused on the impact of delayed DTPT in patients during off-duty hours on outcomes measured by the 90-days mRS. Results: Among the eligible patients, a total of 501 AIS patients underwent mechanical thrombectomy for acute anterior circulation occlusion within 24 h. Of these, 395 patients (78.8%) fell into the early window category, and 320 patients (63.9%) underwent the procedure during off-duty hours. In the early window, for every 60-minute increase in OTPT, the probability of occurrence a poor outcome at 90 days significantly increased in the fully adjusted model (OR = 1.21; 95% CI, 1.02 to 1.43; p = 0.03). In the early window, delayed procedures during off-duty hours (exceeding 103 min of DTPT) were identified as an independent predictor of poor outcomes (OR = 1.85; 95% CI, 1.05 to 3.24; p = 0.03). However, in the late window, there was no association between DTPT and outcomes at 90 days, and the impact of DTPT delays during off-hours was not observed. Conclusions: Through this study, it became evident that the impacts of off-duty hours in mechanical thrombectomy were most pronounced in the early window, where the impact of time delay was clear. Wind speed differences between weekdays and holidays at urban sites in Japan were investigated in search of the influence of urban anthropogenic heat on surface wind speed using data from the Automated Meteorological Data Acquisition System (AMeDAS) of the Japan Meteorological Agency (JMA) for 44 years. The wind speed was found to be lower on holidays than on weekdays, not only in large cities but also in areas with medium degrees of urbanization, which is interpreted to be due to the stronger stability of the surface boundary layer under lower temperatures with smaller amounts of anthropogenic heat. The rate of decrease is about −3% in central Tokyo, and about −0.5% for the average over stations with population densities between 1000 and 3000 km−2. Additionally, an analysis using the spatially dense data on the Air Pollution Monitoring System of Tokyo Metropolis for 28 years showed that negative anomalies in wind speed on holidays were detected at many stations in the Tokyo Wards Area, although negative temperature anomalies were limited to a few stations in the central area or near big roads, suggesting different spatial scales in the response of temperature and wind speed to anthropogenic heat. Background In the healthcare system, in the last 30 years, the prognostically negative value of the so-called Weekend Effect (WE) has been internationally recognized. The WE is regarded as the increased risk a patient might incur when hospitalized during non-working days, of enduring severe complications in comparison to the same hospitalization that occur on working days. The aim of this study was to retrospectively verify whether, once a mistake was made during weekends or on holidays, in comparison to a mistake occurred on workdays, it subsequently implied a higher risk of complications, death included, in a statistical and medico-legal way. Methods. Three different evaluators independently examined a total of 378 medico-legal cases over a more than 20-year period. Eventual medical actions and omissions were labelled as 'mistake' when the AJ claimed that at least one occurred; 'alleged mistake' included the cases where the EW's report disagreed with the AJ's one; finally, 'no mistake' when both the AJ and the EW agreed in their evaluations. During weekends there is a higher risk that a mistake occurs (OR=3.3, 95% CI=1.6;7.4; p-value<0.001) compared to weekdays. When death occurs, delayed diagnosis is the main cause (p=0.02), whereas a damaging action is more frequently claimed in general. Conclusions We verified as actual the impact of the WE on patients' outcome from a medico-legal point of view. Background: The phenomenon known as the “weekend effect” impacts various medical disciplines. We compared outcomes between regular hours and off hours to investigate the presence of the weekend effect in extracorporeal cardiopulmonary resuscitation (ECPR). Methods: Between January 2018 and December 2020, 159 patients at our center were treated with veno-arterial extracorporeal membrane oxygenation (ECMO) for cardiac arrest. We assessed the time required for ECMO preparation, the rate of successful weaning, and the rate of in-hospital mortality. These factors were compared among regular hours (“daytime”: weekdays from 7:00 AM–7:00 PM), off hours on weekdays (“nighttime”: weekdays from 7:00 PM–7:00 AM), and off hours on weekends and holidays (“weekend”: Fridays at 7:00 PM to Mondays at 7:00 AM). Results: The time from the recognition of cardiac arrest to the arrival of the ECMO team was shortest for the daytime group and longest for those treated over the weekend (daytime, 10.0 minutes; nighttime, 12.5 minutes; weekend, 15.0 minutes; p=0.064). The time from the ECMO team’s arrival to ECMO initiation was shortest for the daytime and longest for the nighttime group (daytime, 13.0 minutes; nighttime, 18.5 minutes; weekend, 14.0 minutes; p=0.028). No significant difference was observed in the rate of successful ECMO weaning (daytime, 48.3%; nighttime, 39.5%; weekend, 36.1%; p=0.375). Conclusion: In situations involving CPR, the time to arrival of the ECMO team was longer during off hours. Furthermore, ECMO insertion required more time at night than during the other periods. These findings warrant specific training in decision-making and emergent ECMO insertion.

Objectives: This study aimed to evaluate whether the “weekend eect” would aect the time metrics and the prognosis of acute ischemic stroke (AIS) patients who underwent endovascular treatment (EVT) due to basilar artery occlusion (BAO). Methods: Clinical data of AIS patients who underwent EVT due to BAO between December 2019 and July 2023 were retrospectively analyzed. At the time when the patients were admitted, the study population was divided into the weekdays daytime group and weekends nighttime group. In the subgroup analysis, the study cohort was divided into four groups: the weekdays daytime group, weekdays nighttime group, weekend daytime group, and weekend nighttime group. A good outcome was defined as a modified Rankin Scale score of ≤3 at 90 days after EVT. Time metrics [e.g. onset-to-door time (ODT) and door-topuncture time (DPT)] and clinical outcomes were compared using appropriate statistical methods. Results: A total of 111 patients (88 male patients, mean age, 67.7 ± 11.7 years) were included. Of these, 37 patients were treated during weekdays daytime, while 74 patients were treated during nights or weekends. There were no statistically significant differences in ODT (P = 0.136), DPT (P = 0.931), and also clinical outcomes (P = 0.826) between the two groups. Similarly, we found no significant differences in the time metrics and clinical outcomes among the four sub-groups (all P > 0.05). Conclusion: This study did not reveal any influence of the “weekend effect” on the time metrics and clinical outcomes in AIS patients who underwent EVT due to BAO at a comprehensive stroke center. Background: Weekend effect characterized by worse perioperative outcomes has been demonstrated in some surgery patients admitted on weekends, as opposed to weekdays. This study aimed to examine weekend effect on open surgical repair or thoracic endovascular aneurysm repair (TEVAR) for Stanford Type B Aortic Dissection (TBAD). Methods: Patients who underwent TBAD repair were identified in National/Nationwisde Inpatient Sample from Q4 2015-2020. Open surgery and TEVAR were examined separately. Multivariable analyses were performed comparing in-hospital perioperative outcomes of patients under weekday and weekend admission. Adjusted preoperative variables included sex, age, race, socioeconomic status, hospital characteristics, clinical symptoms, comorbidities, and elective/non-elective admission. Also, length of stay, days from admission to operation, and total hospital charge were compared. Results: Among patients who underwent open TBAD repair, 1321 were admitted on weekdays and 340 on weekends. Among patients who underwent TEVAR for TBAD, 2018 were admitted on weekdays and 440 wereadmitted on weekends. There was no difference in open repair outcomes between those admitted on weekdays vs weekends. In TEVAR, weekend admission was associated with higher post-procedural kidney failure (1.14% vs.20%, aOR = 4.11, P =.04) and superficial wound complications (2.73% vs 1.49%, aOR = 2.2, P =.03) but lower respiratory complications (5.80% vs 3.64%, aOR =.47, P =.01). Also, in TEVAR, weekend admission was associated with longer time from admission to operation (3.92 ±.27 vs 2.35 ±.09 days, P <.01). Conclusions: Renal malperfusion was a common indication for TBAD repair. TBAD patients admitted over the weekend and underwent TEVAR had higher post-procedural kidney failure, which may be due to delayed diagnosis and treatment. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

BackgroundThe existence and reasons for the weekend effect in patients with ischemic heart disease (IHD) were not yet fully identified. This study aimed to evaluate whether weekend admission was independently associated with in-hospital mortality and the possible mechanisms associated with the IHD patients.MethodsThe study was a retrospective study, including IHD patients from 2015 to 2023. The International Classification of Diseases, tenth revision (ICD-10) codes were used to identify all admissions with a primary diagnosis of IHD. The sample was divided into weekday and weekend groups. We performed a multivariate logistic regression analysis and a mediation analysis to estimate the effect of weekend admission on hospital mortality.ResultsA total of 18,906 IHD patients were included in the study, with an average age of 63.8 ± 12.7. Of these patients, 21.7% (n = 4,102) were admitted over the weekend. The in-hospital 30-days mortality rate was significantly higher among the patients admitted at weekends compared with those admitted at weekdays (2.0% vs. 1.1%). Respectively, the 30-day mortality rate of patients admitted on weekends was higher compared to patients admitted on weekdays among patients with surgical treatment (2.34% vs. 1.06%, OR = 1.75; 95% CI: 1.23–2.42) and with emergency admission (3.48% vs. 2.59%, OR = 1.56; 95% CI: 1.05–2.28). Mediation analyses showed that the surgical scheduling had significant mediated effects on the associations of admission time with mortality risk.ConclusionsIHD patients with a surgical therapy or admitted from emergency department had a significantly higher risk of mortality when admitted on weekends compared to weekdays. These findings have potential implications for resource allocation and redistribution of surgery to weekends in hospitals.

Aortic dissection (AD) is a critical heart condition with potentially severe outcomes. Our study aimed to investigate the existence of a “weekend effect” in AD by examining the correlation between patient outcomes and whether their treatment occurred on weekdays versus weekends.

Abstract There is a lack of studies that concurrently differentiate the effect of the holiday season from the weekend effect on mortality risk in patients with acute myocardial infarction (AMI). We evaluated the mortality risk among patients admitted with AMI who underwent percutaneous coronary intervention, using data from the Taiwan National Health Insurance Research Database. Adult AMI patients admitted during January and February between 2013 and 2020 were enrolled and classified into the holiday season (using the Chinese New Year holiday seasons as an indicator) (n = 1729), weekend (n = 4725), and weekday (n = 14,583) groups according to the first day of admission. A multivariable logistic regression model was used to assess the risk. With the weekday group or the weekend group as the reference, the holiday season group did not have increased risks of in-hospital mortality (adjusted odds ratio [aOR] 1.15; 95% confidence intervals [CI] 0.93–1.42 or aOR 1.23; 95% CI 0.96–1.56) and 7-day mortality (aOR 1.20; 95% CI 0.90–1.58 or aOR 1.24; 95% CI 0.90–1.70). Stratified and subgroup analyses showed similar trends. We conclude that holiday season-initiated admissions were not associated with higher mortality risks in AMI admission cases than weekday or weekend admissions.

Urban areas, characterized by dense anthropogenic activities, are among the primary sources of nitrogen oxides (NOx), impacting global atmospheric conditions and human health. Satellite observations, renowned for their continuity and global coverage, have emerged as an effective means to quantify pollutant emissions. Previous bottom-up emission inventories exhibit considerable discrepancies and lack a comprehensive and reliable database. To develop a high-precision emission inventory for individual cities, this study utilizes high-resolution single-pass observations from the TROPOspheric Monitoring Instrument (TROPOMI) on the Sentinel-5 Precursor satellite to quantify the emission rates of NOx. The Exponentially Modified Gaussian (EMG) model is validated for estimating NOx emission strength using real plumes observed in satellite single-pass observations, demonstrating good consistency with existing inventories. Further analysis based on the results reveals the existence of a weekend effect and seasonal variations in NOx emissions for the majority of the studied cities. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Our study aimed to assess the effect of weekend versus weekday hospital admissions on all-cause mortality in patients with acute myocardial infarction (AMI) and COVID-19 during the COVID-19 pandemic. We analyzed data from the National Inpatient Sample (NIS) 2020, identifying patients with co-existing AMI and COVID-19 admitted on weekdays and weekends. Baseline demographics, comorbidities, and outcomes were assessed. A multivariable regression analysis was conducted, adjusting for confounders to determine the odds of all-cause mortality. Among 74,820 patients, 55,145 (73.7%) were admitted on weekdays, while 19,675 (26.3%) were admitted on weekends. Weekend admissions showed slightly higher proportions of men (61.3% vs. 60%) and whites (56.3% vs. 54.9%) with a median age of 73 years (range: 62-82). The overall all-cause mortality had an odds ratio (OR) of 1.00 (95% CI, 0.92-1.09; P = 0.934). After adjusting for covariates, there was no significant associations between mortality and hospital type (rural: OR = 1.04; 95% CI, 0.78-1.39; P = 0.789; urban teaching: OR = 1.04; 95% CI, 0.94-1.14; P = 0.450) or geographic region (Northeast: OR = 1.16; 95% CI, 0.96-1.39; P = 0.12; Midwest: OR = 0.99; 95% CI, 0.83-1.17; P = 0.871; South: OR = 0.97; 95% CI, 0.85-1.12; P = 0.697; West: OR = 0.94; 95% CI, 0.77-1.15; P = 0.554). The purpose of this study was to evaluate whether there is a difference in procedure duration and time spent in the post anaesthesia care unit (PACU) between weekday (WD) and weekend (WE) oocyte retrievals (ORs). This was a retrospective cohort study of patients compared and stratified based on number of oocytes retrieved (1–10, 11–20, and >20). Student's t-test and linear regression models were used to assess the relationship between AMH, BMI, and a number of oocytes retrieved with the duration of procedure and total time spent in the PACU. 664 patients underwent OR of which 578 met inclusion criteria and were analyzed. There were 501 WD OR cases (86%) and 77 (13%) WE ORs. When stratified by number of oocytes retrieved, there was no difference in procedure duration or PACU time between WD vs. WE OR. Longer procedure times were associated with higher BMI (p = 0.04), AMH (p = 0.01) and oocytes retrieved (p < 0.01). Increased PACU times positively correlated with the number of oocytes retrieved (p = 0.04), but not AMH or BMI. While BMI, AMH, and number of oocytes retrieved are associated with longer intra-operative and post-operative recovery times, there is no difference in procedure or recovery time when comparing WD vs. WE procedures. Background: Weekend readmissions have been previously associated with increased mortality after pancreatic resection, but the effect of weekend discharge is less understood. In this study, we aim to determine the impact of weekend discharges on 30-day readmission rate after pancreatic surgery. Methods: All patients who underwent pancreatic surgery at a single, high-volume institution between 2013 and 2021 were retrospectively reviewed from a targeted, institutional ACS-NSQIP database. Patients who died prior to discharge were excluded. Multivariable logistic regression was used to assess the relationship between readmission and weekend discharge. Results: Out of 2042 patients who underwent pancreatectomy, 418 patients (20.5%) were discharged on the weekend. Weekend discharge was associated with fewer Whipple surgeries, fewer open surgical approaches, and shorter operative time. Patients discharged on the weekend were also less likely to have had postoperative complications such as delayed gastric emptying (DGE) (6.7% vs 12.6%, p < 0.01) and were more frequently discharged to home (91.1% vs. 85.3%, p < 0.01). Thirty-day readmission rate was almost identical between groups (14.8% vs 14.8%, p = 0.997). On multivariable analysis, 30-day readmission was independently associated with DGE (OR (95% CI): 3.48 (2.31–5.23), p < 0.01), postoperative pancreatic fistula (3.36 (2.34–4.83), p < 0.01), myocardial infarction, and perioperative blood transfusion, but not weekend discharge (1.02 (0.72–1.43), p = 0.93). Readmission rate also did not differ significantly when including Friday discharges in the weekend group (15.2% vs 14.6%, p = 0.72). Conclusions: With careful clinical decision making, patients may safely be discharged on the weekend after pancreatic surgery without increasing 30-day readmission rate. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Rationale: Increased mortality in patients admitted to hospitals on weekends is a well-described phenomenon labeled the "weekend effect." Studies evaluating the weekend effect in intensive care units (ICUs) have arrived at conflicting results. Identifying a weekend effect for critically-ill patients may inform clinical care pathways and resource allocation. Objectives: Determine the association of initiation of mechanical ventilation (MV) upon admission on a weekend versus weekday with hospital mortality. Methods: We conducted a retrospective cohort study of non-surgical adult patients using the California Patient Discharge Database from 2018 to 2019. We identified MV initiated on the day of admission and diagnoses using discharge billing codes. The primary exposure was admission and initiation of MV on a weekend versus weekday and the primary outcome was hospital mortality. Hierarchical logistic regression was used to determine the association between hospital mortality and MV initiation timing, adjusting for case-mix. Results: Among 90 288 admissions in 2018 and 2019 meeting inclusion criteria, 24 771 (27.5%) had MV initiated on weekends, while 65 517 (72.6%) had MV initiated on weekdays. Patient demographics and comorbidities were similar between groups. Chronic alcohol and substance use disorders, and acute intoxications and traumas were more prevalent among patients with MV initiated on weekends. No difference in hospital mortality was observed with initiation of MV on weekends versus weekdays (23.1% vs 22.8%, ARD = 0.3%, aOR = 1.02, 95% CI 0.98, 1.07). Conclusions: Contrary to prior studies, no increased mortality was observed among newly admitted patients initiated on MV on weekends compared to weekdays. While weekend effects may exist in other settings, newly admitted patients likely have MV initiated in the emergency department or ICU, which tend to have more consistent staffing levels. Clinical outcomes for patients admitted to hospital during weekend hours have been reported to be poorer than for those admitted during the week. Aneurysmal subarachnoid haemorrhage (aSAH) is a devastating form of haemorrhagic stroke, with a mortality rate greater than 30%. A number of studies have reported higher mortality for patients with aSAH who are admitted during weekend hours. This study evaluates the effect of weekend admission on patients in our unit with aSAH in terms of time to treatment, treatment type, rebleeding rates, functional outcome, and mortality. We analysed a retrospective database of all patients admitted to our tertiary referral centre with aneurysmal subarachnoid haemorrhage between February 2016 and February 2020. Chi-square tests and t-tests were used to compare weekday and weekend demographic and clinical variables. Univariate and multivariate logistic regression analyses were performed to assess for any association between admission during weekend hours and increased neurological morbidity (assessed via Glasgow Outcome Scale at 3 months) and mortality. Of the 571 patients included in this study, 191 were admitted during on-call weekend hours. There were no significant differences found in time to treatment, type of treatment, rebleeding rates, neurological morbidity, or mortality rates between patients admitted during the week and those admitted during weekend hours. Weekend admission was not associated with worsened functional outcome or increased mortality in this cohort. These results suggest that provision of 7-day cover by vascular neurosurgeons and interventional neuroradiologists in high-volume centres could mitigate the weekend effect sometimes reported in the aSAH cohort. Introduction: Weekend admissions showed increased mortality in several medical conditions. This study aimed to examine the weekend effect on acute lower gastrointestinal bleeding (ALGIB) and its mortality and other outcomes. Methods: This retrospective cohort study (CODE BLUE-J Study) was conducted at 49 Japanese hospitals between January 2010 and December 2019. In total, 8,120 outpatients with acute hematochezia were enrolled and divided into weekend admissions and weekday admissions groups. Multiple imputation (MI) was used to handle missing values, followed by propensity score matching (PSM) to compare outcomes. The primary outcome was mortality; the secondary outcomes were rebleeding, length of stay (LOS), blood transfusion, thromboembolism, endoscopic treatment, the need for interventional radiology, and the need for surgery. Colonoscopy and computed tomography (CT) management were also evaluated. Results: Before PSM, there was no significant difference in mortality (1.3% vs. 0.9%, p = 0.133) between weekend and weekday admissions. After PSM with MI, 1,976 cases were matched for each admission. Mortality was not significantly different for weekend admissions compared with weekday admissions (odds ratio [OR] 1.437, 95% confidence interval [CI] 0.785–2.630; p = 0.340). No significant difference was found with other secondary outcomes in weekend admissions except for blood transfusion (OR 1.239, 95% CI 1.084–1.417; p = 0.006). Weekend admission had a negative effect on early colonoscopy (OR 0.536, 95% CI 0.471–0.609; p < 0.001). Meanwhile, urgent CT remained significantly higher in weekend admissions (OR 1.466, 95% CI 1.295–1.660; p < 0.001). This study contributes to the ongoing debate on the persistence of stock market anomalies in equity markets (McLean and Pontiff, 2016; Jacobs and Müller, 2020) and concentrates on the day-of-the-week effect in the European real estate sector. Interest payments and settlement effects were discussed as the main factors to explain this anomaly in the past. Today the persistence is highly questionable concerning the dynamically adjusting economic and institutional environment. While previous research indicated a significant Monday and Friday effect in other sectors, literature can only support a Friday effect for real estate. Furthermore, the real estate sector has a lower level of mispricing, which makes it more difficult for an anomaly to survive (Bampinas et al., 2016). The data is splitted in three ten-year periods to analyze the effect's existence over the long term. Applying OLS and GARCH models, results reveal an evolution in a significant Friday effect for cross-country indices (Europe and Global). From 1990 to 2000, the effect is weak but significant. It gains in importance during the period 2000 to 2009. In the final period until 2020, the anomaly weakens again but does not disappear for cross-country indices. From a country-specific perspective, there is no pattern in the significance of the day-of-the-week effect. The real estate sector has a local business character. Therefore, country-specific effects are possible, but a pattern is not found. In conclusion, there is still a day-of-the-week effect in the real estate sector in Europe from a cross-country perspective.

This study examines the relationship between market volatility conditions and the weekend effect on size and profitability anomalies in the U.S. stock market. The study uses the ICSS model to divide the sample into high- and low-volatility periods. Empirical results indicate that the weekend effect of size and profitability anomalies is significant in low-volatility states and insignificant in high-volatility conditions, and it is consistent across different measures of stock market volatility and subsamples. Additionally, we identify the intra-week patterns of log returns on the VIX index as the driver of the weekend effect on profitability and size anomalies. Our study not only extends the understanding of the weekend effect of long-short anomalies but also provides new evidence on the effectiveness of volatility management in factor investing. It also has important implications for investors, who should consider improving their factor investment strategies based on our results.

BackgroundTo document pooled evidence on the association between weekend hospital admissions and the potential risks of mortality, intensive care requirements, and readmission among patients with pneumonia.MethodsWe performed a systematic search across the PubMed, EMBASE, and Scopus databases. We collected observational studies exploring the association between weekend admissions and outcomes of interest in patients with pneumonia. To analyze the data, we used a random effects model and expressed the effect sizes as pooled odds ratios (ORs) accompanied by their respective 95% confidence intervals (CIs).ResultsThe analysis comprised data from 13 retrospective studies. Compared to patients admitted on weekdays, those admitted during the weekend had a non-statistically significant marginally higher risk of in-hospital mortality (OR, 1.02; 95% CI, 1.00, 1.04) but similar 30-day mortality after admission (OR, 1.03; 95% CI, 0.97, 1.10), and similar risks of admission to intensive care unit (OR, 1.04; 95% CI, 0.98, 1.11) and re-admission (OR, 0.85; 95% CI, 0.65–1.12).ConclusionOur findings do not support the presence of a “weekend effect” in patients with pneumonia.Systematic review registrationPROSPERO, identifier CRD42023425802, https://www.crd.york.ac.uk/prospero/.

Objective: The term "weekend effect" refers to an increase in the mortality rate for hospitalizations occurring on weekends versus weekdays. In this study, we investigated whether such an effect exists in patients undergoing mechanical thrombectomy for acute ischemic stroke with large vessel occlusion (currently the standard treatment for this condition) at a single center in Japan. Methods: We surveyed 151 patients who underwent mechanical thrombectomy for acute ischemic stroke with large vessel occlusion (75 and 76 patients were treated during daytime and nighttime, respectively) from January 2019 to June 2021. The items evaluated in this analysis were the rate of modified Rankin Scale =2 or prestroke scale, mortality, and procedural treatment time. Results: The rates of modified Rankin Scale =2 or prestroke scale and mortality at 90 days after treatment did not differ significantly between daytime and nighttime (41.3% vs. 29.0%, p=0.11; 14.7% vs. 11.8%, p=0.61, respectively). The door-to-groin time tended to be shorter during daytime versus nighttime (57 [IQR: 42.5-70] min vs. 70 [IQR: 55-82]) min, p=0.0507). Conclusions: This study did not reveal differences in treatment outcome between daytime and nighttime in patients undergoing mechanical thrombectomy for acute ischemic stroke with large vessel occlusion. Urban areas, characterized by dense anthropogenic activities, are among the primary sources of nitrogen oxides (NOx), impacting global atmospheric conditions and human health. Satellite observations, renowned for their continuity and global coverage, have emerged as an effective means to quantify pollutant emissions. Previous bottom-up emission inventories exhibit considerable discrepancies and lack a comprehensive and reliable database. To develop a high-precision emission inventory for individual cities, this study utilizes high-resolution single-pass observations from the TROPOspheric Monitoring Instrument (TROPOMI) on the Sentinel-5 Precursor satellite to quantify the emission rates of NOx. The Exponentially Modified Gaussian (EMG) model is validated for estimating NOx emission strength using real plumes observed in satellite single-pass observations, demonstrating good consistency with existing inventories. Further analysis based on the results reveals the existence of a weekend effect and seasonal variations in NOx emissions for the majority of the studied cities.

A fundamental question of any new relationship is, will it last? Transient relationships, recently defined by the authors, are an ideal type of social tie to explore this question: these relationships are characterized by distinguishable starting and ending temporal points, linking the question of tie longevity to relationship finite lifetime. In this study, we use mobile phone data sets from the UK and Italy to analyse the weekly allocation of time invested in maintaining transient relationships. We find that more relationships are created during weekdays, with a greater proportion of them receiving more contact during these days of the week in the long term. The smaller group of relationships that receive more phone calls during the weekend tend to remain active for more time. We uncover a sorting process by which some ties are moved from weekdays to weekends and vice versa, mostly in the first half of the relationship. This process also carries more information about the ultimate lifetime of a tie than the part of the week when the relationship started, which suggests an early evaluation period that leads to a decision on how to allocate time to different types of transient ties.

The weekend effect, i.e., the concentration of air pollutants is different from weekends to weekdays, has been explored since the 1970 s. In most studies, the weekend effect is referred to the change of O 3 , i.e., lower emission of NO x on weekends leads to a higher concentration of O 3 . Determining whether it is true can provide insight into the strategy of air pollution controlling. In this study, we explore the weekly cycle of cities of China based on the weekly cycle anomaly (WCA), which is proposed in this paper. The advantage of using WCA is that we can avoid the influence of other change components such as the daily cycle and the seasonal cycle. The p values of the significant tests from all cities are analyzed for obtaining a whole picture of the weekly cycle of air pollution. The result shows that the concept of the weekend effect is not proper for cities in China, as many cities reach the valley phase of the emission on weekdays but not weekends. Thus, researches should not pre-assume that the weekend is the low emission scenario. We focus on the anomaly of O 3 on the peak and the valley of the emission scenario estimated by the NO 2 concentration. Through the analysis of the distribution of the p values of all cities, we show that almost all cities in China have weekly cycle of O 3 corresponding to the weekly cycle emission of NO x , i.e., O 3 of the peak time of NO 2 is less than valley time. The cities of the strong weekly cycle are located in four regions, i.e., the Beijing-Tianjing-Hebei region, the Shandong Peninsula Delta, the Yangtze River Delta, and the Pearl River Delta, and these regions are also the regions with relatively severe pollution levels. Background: The 'weekend effect' is the term given to the observed discrepancy regarding patient care and outcomes on weekends compared to weekdays. This study aimed to determine whether the weekend effect exists within Aotearoa New Zealand (AoNZ) for patients undergoing emergency laparotomy (EL), given recent advances in management of EL patients. Methods: A cohort study was conducted across five hospitals, comparing the outcomes of weekend and weekday acute EL. A propensity‐score matched analysis was used to remove potential confounding patient characteristics. Results: Of the 487 patients included, 132 received EL over the weekend. There was no statistically significant difference between patients undergoing EL over the weekend compared to weekdays. Mortality rates were comparable between the weekday and weekend cohorts (P = 0.464). Background: Previous studies demonstrated a 'weekend effect' and a 'night effect' of increased mortality among patients admitted during weekends or night shifts, presumably due to understaffing. Aims: To examine whether death during hospitalisation follows a similar effect regardless of admission time. Methods: A retrospective cohort study among deceased patients hospitalised in the internal medicine wing of a tertiary medical centre in Israel, between 2019 and 2020. Demographic and medical data were retrieved from electronic medical charts. Causes of death were specifically categorised. We applied statistical models to test for differences in mortality using incidence rate ratio (IRR) according to the day, time and cause of death. Results: One thousand, two hundred and seventy‐eight deceased patients were included. All‐cause mortality was similar between weekends and weekdays. When sepsis was the cause of death, higher IRR were demonstrated on Fridays in comparison with weekdays (IRR 1.4; 95% confidence interval (CI) 1.1–1.9; P < 0.05). Other causes of death were not consistent with a 'weekend effect'. Mortality during night shifts was higher in comparison with the afternoon (IRR 1.5; 95% CI 1.3–4.7) and similar to the morning (IRR 1; 95% CI 0.9–1.2). Conclusion: Our study did not find a pattern of 'weekend effect' or 'night effect' on all‐cause mortality among hospitalised patients in internal medicine wards. Our findings suggest that perhaps specifically death from sepsis, and not all‐cause mortality, can be used as a surrogate for the measurement of understaffing or quality of care in the internal ward. Objectives: To study differences in care of patients admitted for epistaxis during the weekend compared to the weekday. Study Design: Retrospective database review. Setting: 2003 to 2014 National Inpatient Sample. Methods: Patients admitted for a primary diagnosis of epistaxis were extracted from the National Inpatient Sample from 2003 to 2014. Univariate and multivariate analyses were applied to assess differences in patient demographics, clinical characteristics, treatment, and outcomes between weekend and weekday admissions. Results: A total of 39,329 cases were included in our study cohort, with 28,458 weekday admissions and 10,892 weekend admissions. There was no significant difference in patient race, gender, insurance status, hospital ownership status, or location between weekend and weekday admissions (p >.05). Most weekend admissions were emergent (82.2%) and were treated with packing (51.8%). Upon performing logistic regression, the likelihood of emergent admission (odds ratio [OR] 1.41, 95% confidence interval [CI] 1.32‐1.51, p <.001) and prolonged length of stay (OR 1.11, 95% CI 1.05‐1.17, p <.001) was higher for weekend admissions versus weekday admissions. Moreover, odds of packing for epistaxis were significantly higher (OR 1.14, 95% CI 1.09‐1.19, p <.001) on the weekend, while odds of ligation (OR 0.88, 95% CI 0.80‐0.97, p =.013) and endovascular arterial embolization (OR 0.74, 95% CI 0.65‐0.84, p <.001) were lower. There were no significant differences in in‐hospital mortality, patient discharge disposition, and total hospital charges (p >.05). Conclusion: Patients primarily admitted for epistaxis over the weekend were more likely to be emergent, experienced prolonged length of stay, and be treated nonoperatively with packing, than weekday admissions. Atmospheric environmental pollution has become a critical issue in eastern coastal cities in China, so a broad understanding of its spatiotemporal characteristics is of importance to develop public policies. In this study, hourly data of ρ(PM2.5), ρ(PM10), ρ(NO2), ρ(SO2), ρ(O3) and φ(CO) of five different types of national air quality monitoring sites from 2016 to 2020 were analyzed, combined with the change of meteorological elements in the same period in Yancheng, which was a rapidly developed eastern coastal city in China. The results indicated that the pollutant concentrations except for ρ(O3) was low in summer and high in winter, decreasing year by year from 2016 to 2020. The proportion of moderately and heavily contaminated days in the whole year was decreasing from 80 days in 2016 to 52 days in 2020, and the days with good quality increased from 284 days in 2016 to 311 days in 2020. ρ(O3) was the highest in spring and the lowest in winter, increasing slightly year by year. The variation of ρ(PM2.5), ρ(PM10), ρ(NO2), ρ(SO2) and φ(CO) showed a double-peak type, reaching the peak value at 8:00–10:00 and 20:00–22:00, corresponding to the early and evening rush hours. ρ(PM2.5), ρ(PM10) and φ(CO) on the weekend were higher than on weekdays, while an insignificant difference of ρ(NO2), ρ(O3) and ρ(SO2) was found between weekdays and the weekend. Wind direction played a key role in the variation of pollutant concentration in the Yancheng urban area, and the correlation analysis indicated that ρ(PM2.5) and ρ(PM10) were highly correlated to wind direction. Temperature was positively correlated to ρ(O3), while air pressure was significantly negatively correlated to ρ(O3). Objectives: Trauma is one of the leading causes of death and its incidence increases annually. The “weekend effect” and “holiday season effect” on traumatic injury mortality remain controversial, whereby traumatic injury patients admitted during weekends and/or holiday season have a higher risk of in-hospital death. The present study is aimed to explore the association between “weekend effect” and “holiday season effect” and mortality in traumatic injury population. Materials and Methods: This retrospective descriptive study included patients from the Taipei Tzu Chi Hospital Trauma Database between January 2009 and June 2019. The exclusion criterion was age of < 20 years. The primary outcome was the in-hospital mortality rate. The secondary outcomes included intensive care unit (ICU) admission, ICU re-admission, length of stay (LOS) in the ICU, ICU admission duration ≥ 14 days, total hospital LOS, total hospital LOS ≥ 14 days, need for surgery, and re-operation rate. Results: In this study, 11,946 patients were included in the analysis, and 8143 (68.2%) patients were admitted on weekdays, 3050 (25.5%) on weekends, and 753 (6.3%) on holidays. Multivariable logistic regression revealed that the admission day was not associated with an increased risk of in-hospital mortality. In other clinical outcome analyses, we found no significant increase in the risk of in-hospital mortality, ICU admission, ICU LOS ≥ 14 days, or total LOS ≥ 14 days in the weekend and holiday season groups. The subgroup analysis showed that the association between holiday season admission and in-hospital mortality was noted only in the elderly and shock condition populations. The holiday season duration did not differ in terms of in-hospital mortality. Longer holiday season duration was also not associated with an increased risk of in-hospital mortality, ICU LOS ≥14 days, and total LOS ≥14 days. Conclusion: In this study, we did not find any evidence that weekend and holiday season admissions in the traumatic injury population were associated with an increased risk of mortality. In other clinical outcome analyses, there was no significant increase in the risk of in-hospital mortality, ICU admission, ICU LOS ≥ 14 days, or total LOS ≥ 14 days in the weekend and holiday season groups.

This study aims to find out 1) how the level of January Effect, Monday Effect and Weekend Effect on Stock Return; 2) how the Stock Return rate on the IDX30 stock index; 3) How the January Effect, Monday Effect and Weekend Effect affect Stock Return listed on IDX30 for the 2017-2021 period either simultaneously or partially. The sample of this study amounted to 5 listed companies in the banking sector listed in IDX30 for the period February 2022 to July 2022 using the purposive sampling method. The technique to analyze hypotheses is to use Panel Data Regression Analysis, T-Test and F-Test with the help of Microsoft Excel 2019 and EViews 10. The results showed 1) The level of January Effect, Monday Effect and Weekend Effect on Stock Return is much influenced by internal and external factors so that it experiences very significant fluctuations; 2) The Stock Return rate on the IDX30 stock index is very good there is a loss if there are cases that affect the world financial sector; 3) The results of the study partially show that The January Effect and Monday Effect affect Stock Returns while the Weekend Effect does not. Poor data exist on the influence of holidays and weekdays on the number and the results of liver transplantation (LT) in Italy. The study's main objective is to investigate the impact of holidays and the different days of the week on the LT number and early graft survival rates in a multi-centric Italian series. We performed a retrospective analysis on 1,026 adult patients undergoing first deceased-donor transplantation between January 2004 and December 2018 in the three university centers in Rome. During the 4,504 workdays, 881 LTs were performed (85.9%; one every 5.1 days on average). On the opposite, 145 LTs were done during the 975 holidays (14.1%; one every 7.1 days on average). Fewer LTs were performed on holidays (P = 0.004). There were no substantial differences in donor-, recipient- and transplant-related characteristics in LTs performed on weekdays or holidays. On Monday, fewer transplants were performed (vs. other weekdays: P < 0.0001; vs. Sunday: P = 0.03). At multivariable Cox regression analysis, LTs performed during the holiday or during the different days of the week were not found to be independent risk factors for the risk of 3- and 12-month graft loss. At three-month survival curves, no differences were observed among the transplants performed during the holidays versus the workdays (86.2 vs. 85.0%; P-0.70). The range of graft survival rates based on the day of the week was 81.6–86.9%, without showing any significant differences (P = 0.57). Fewer transplants are performed on holidays and Mondays. Background. By changing the circumstances in which animals make their behavioral decisions, weekly cycles of human activity might cause changes in wildlife behavior. For example, when there is more human activity in a location, animals may become more vigilant, which can decrease the time they spend foraging, or roam farther from home, leading to increased home range size. Overall, there has been little exploration of how animal species living in locations that have undergone land use change are affected by the temporal dynamics of human activity levels. In this study, we aimed to analyze the effect of the weekend on agricultural activities and hummingbird territorial activity. We examined differences between weekdays and weekends in factors previously shown to follow weekly cyclical patterns, such as pedestrian presence, traffic, and the presence of domestic animals. We hypothesized that territorial hummingbirds would respond to these weekly cycles of human activity by altering their behavior. Methods. We studied Broad-tailed hummingbird territories in forested areas that had been transformed to agriculture lands in central Mexico. We evaluated whether territorial individuals changed their behaviors (i.e., chases of intruders, foraging within their territory, number of intruders allowed to forage in the territory) in response to variation between weekdays and weekends in the number of pedestrians, cyclists, dogs, farm animals and vehicles. Results. We found that the level of agriculture-related human activities showed a weekly cycle at our study site. On weekdays there was higher traffic of pedestrians, cyclists, dogs, farm animals and vehicles, compared to the weekends. Hummingbirds responded to these weekday-weekends differences by changing their territorial behavior. Compared to weekends, on weekdays hummingbirds showed a decrease in defense (number of chases) as well as the use of their territory (number of flowers visited), which allowed increased access to intruders (number of visited flowers by intruders). Conclusions. Our findings suggest that variation in agriculture-related human activities between weekdays and weekends can alter the territorial behavior of hummingbirds. Behavioral shifts seem to be related to these human activity cycles, leading hummingbirds to reduce chases and feeding during weekdays when human activity is highest, but increasing both behaviors during times of minimal disturbance. United States Environmental Protection Agency guidance on the use of photochemical models for assessing the efficacy of an emissions control strategy for ozone requires that modeling be used in a relative sense. Consequently, testing a modeling system's ability to predict changes in ozone resulting from emission changes is critical. We evaluate model simulations for precursor species (NOx, CO, and volatile organic compounds [VOCs]), radicals (OH and HO2), a secondary pollutant (O3), and the model response of these compounds to weekend/weekday emission changes during California Nexus study in 2010. The modeling system correctly simulated the broad spatial and temporal variation of NOx and O3 in California South Coast. Although the model generally underpredicted the daytime mixing ratios of NO2 at the surface and overpredicted the NO2 column, the simulated weekend to weekday ratios are consistent with each other and match the observed ratios well. The modeling system exhibited reasonable performance in simulating the VOC compounds with fossil fuel origins but has larger bias in simulating certain species associated with noncombustion sources. The modeling system successfully captured the weekend changes of the enhancement ratios for various VOC species to CO and the relative changes of HOx, which are indicators of faster chemical processing on weekends. This work demonstrates satisfactory model performances for O3 and most relevant chemical compounds with more robust performance in simulating weekend versus weekday changes. Improved planetary boundary layer height simulations, a better understanding of OH-HO2 cycling, continued improvement of emissions, especially urban biogenic emissions and emissions of oxygenated VOCs, are important for future model improvement.

Background By changing the circumstances in which animals make their behavioral decisions, weekly cycles of human activity might cause changes in wildlife behavior. For example, when there is more human activity in a location, animals may become more vigilant, which can decrease the time they spend foraging, or roam farther from home, leading to increased home range size. Overall, there has been little exploration of how animal species living in locations that have undergone land use change are affected by the temporal dynamics of human activity levels. In this study, we aimed to analyze the effect of the weekend on agricultural activities and hummingbird territorial activity. We examined differences between weekdays and weekends in factors previously shown to follow weekly cyclical patterns, such as pedestrian presence, traffic, and the presence of domestic animals. We hypothesized that territorial hummingbirds would respond to these weekly cycles of human activity by altering their behavior. Methods We studied Broad-tailed hummingbird territories in forested areas that had been transformed to agriculture lands in central Mexico. We evaluated whether territorial individuals changed their behaviors (i.e., chases of intruders, foraging within their territory, number of intruders allowed to forage in the territory) in response to variation between weekdays and weekends in the number of pedestrians, cyclists, dogs, farm animals and vehicles. Results We found that the level of agriculture-related human activities showed a weekly cycle at our study site. On weekdays there was higher traffic of pedestrians, cyclists, dogs, farm animals and vehicles, compared to the weekends. Hummingbirds responded to these weekday-weekends differences by changing their territorial behavior. Compared to weekends, on weekdays hummingbirds showed a decrease in defense (number of chases) as well as the use of their territory (number of flowers visited), which allowed increased access to intruders (number of visited flowers by intruders). Conclusions Our findings suggest that variation in agriculture-related human activities between weekdays and weekends can alter the territorial behavior of hummingbirds. Behavioral shifts seem to be related to these human activity cycles, leading hummingbirds to reduce chases and feeding during weekdays when human activity is highest, but increasing both behaviors during times of minimal disturbance.

The "weekend effect" is the negative effect on disease course and treatment resulting from being admitted to the hospital during a weekend. Whether the weekend effect is associated with worse outcomes for patients treated for aneurysmal subarachnoid hemorrhage (aSAH) is unknown. We assessed neurologic outcomes of patients with aSAH admitted during the weekend versus during the week. A retrospective database was reviewed to identify all patients with aSAH who received open or endovascular treatment from August 1, 2007, to July 31, 2019, at a quaternary center. The primary outcome was a poor neurologic outcome (modified Rankin Scale score >2). Propensity adjustment included age, sex, treatment type, Hunt and Hess grade, and Charlson Comorbidity Index. A total of 1014 patients (women, 703 [69.3%]; men, 311 [30.7%]; mean age, 56 [standard deviation, 14]) met inclusion criteria; 726 (71.6%) had weekday admissions, and 288 (28.4%) had weekend admissions. There was no significant difference between patients with a weekday versus a weekend admission in mean (standard deviation) time to treatment (0.85 [1.29] vs. 0.93 [1.30] days, P = 0.10) or length of stay (19 [9] vs. 19 [9] days, P = 0.04). Total cost and rates of delayed cerebral ischemia and vasospasm were similar between the admission groups, both overall and within the open and endovascular treatment cohorts. After propensity adjustment, weekend admission was not a significant predictor of a modified Rankin Scale score greater than 2 (odds ratio [95% confidence interval]; 1.12 [0.85–1.49]; P = 0.4). Objectives: Trauma is one of the leading causes of death and its incidence increases annually. The "weekend effect" and "holiday season effect" on traumatic injury mortality remain controversial, whereby traumatic injury patients admitted during weekends and/or holiday season have a higher risk of in-hospital death. The present study is aimed to explore the association between "weekend effect" and "holiday season effect" and mortality in traumatic injury population. Materials and Methods: This retrospective descriptive study included patients from the Taipei Tzu Chi Hospital Trauma Database between January 2009 and June 2019. The exclusion criterion was age of < 20 years. The primary outcome was the in-hospital mortality rate. The secondary outcomes included intensive care unit (ICU) admission, ICU re-admission, length of stay (LOS) in the ICU, ICU admission duration ≥ 14 days, total hospital LOS, total hospital LOS ≥ 14 days, need for surgery, and re-operation rate. Results: In this study, 11,946 patients were included in the analysis, and 8143 (68.2%) patients were admitted on weekdays, 3050 (25.5%) on weekends, and 753 (6.3%) on holidays. Multivariable logistic regression revealed that the admission day was not associated with an increased risk of in-hospital mortality. In other clinical outcome analyses, we found no significant increase in the risk of in-hospital mortality, ICU admission, ICU LOS ≥ 14 days, or total LOS ≥ 14 days in the weekend and holiday season groups. The subgroup analysis showed that the association between holiday season admission and in-hospital mortality was noted only in the elderly and shock condition populations. The holiday season duration did not differ in terms of in-hospital mortality. Longer holiday season duration was also not associated with an increased risk of in-hospital mortality, ICU LOS ≥14 days, and total LOS ≥14 days. Conclusion: In this study, we did not find any evidence that weekend and holiday season admissions in the traumatic injury population were associated with an increased risk of mortality. In other clinical outcome analyses, there was no significant increase in the risk of in-hospital mortality, ICU admission, ICU LOS ≥ 14 days, or total LOS ≥ 14 days in the weekend and holiday season groups. Introduction: Numerous studies reported poorer outcomes for patients who were admitted at weekends or off-hour, which relates to the underlying concept called the "weekend effect." We aimed to assess the effect of adverse outcomes in older patients with intertrochanteric fracture surgery. Methods: A retrospective cohort study of patients aged ≥65 years with intertrochanteric fracture surgery. Data were collected from computerized medical records and all patients had a long-term follow-up. The association between weekend effect with adverse outcomes and factors for all-cause mortality was studied by 3-group comparison, Spearman and partial correlation analysis, univariate analysis, and multivariate Cox proportional-hazard model. Results: Our results showed no evidence supporting the existence of a weekend effect on adverse outcomes, including mortality rates (p = 0.950, log-rank), length of hospital stay, total hospital costs, rate and volume of transfusion, visual analog scale score, Harris Hip Score, and specific complications (all p > 0.05), except for an average of 0.5 days longer surgical delay found in patients admitted on Fridays relative to other days (p = 0.013). Instead, only age group (with a 10-year interval, HR 1.43, 1.28–1.59 95% CI, p < 0.001) and surgical delay (HR 1.05, 1.02–1.07 95% CI, p < 0.001) were identified as significantly associated with all-cause mortality. Conclusions: Older patients with intertrochanteric fracture surgery have similar mortality and adverse outcomes rates when admitted on weekends or holidays compared with weekdays. Our findings suggest that collaborative multidisciplinary team care seems both effective and efficient in the management of older patients with intertrochanteric fractures on any day of the week. Abstract Introduction The concept of “weekend effect”, that is, substandard healthcare during weekends, has never been fully demonstrated, and the different outcomes of emergency surgical patients admitted during weekends may be due to different conditions at admission and/or different therapeutic approaches. Aim of this international audit was to identify any change of pattern of emergency surgical admissions and treatments during weekends. Furthermore, we aimed at investigating the impact of the COVID-19 pandemic on the alleged “weekend effect”. Methods The database of the CovidICE-International Study was interrogated, and 6263 patients were selected for analysis. Non-trauma, 18+ yo patients admitted to 45 emergency surgery units in Europe in the months of March–April 2019 and March–April 2020 were included. Demographic and clinical data were anonymised by the referring centre and centrally collected and analysed with a statistical package. This study was endorsed by the Association of Italian Hospital Surgeons (ACOI) and the World Society of Emergency Surgery (WSES). Results Three-quarters of patients have been admitted during workdays and only 25.7% during weekends. There was no difference in the distribution of gender, age, ASA class and diagnosis during weekends with respect to workdays. The first wave of the COVID pandemic caused a one-third reduction of emergency surgical admission both during workdays and weekends but did not change the relation between workdays and weekends. The treatment was more often surgical for patients admitted during weekends, with no difference between 2019 and 2020, and procedures were more often performed by open surgery. However, patients admitted during weekends had a threefold increased risk of laparoscopy-to-laparotomy conversion (1% vs. 3.4%). Hospital stay was longer in patients admitted during weekends, but those patients had a lower risk of readmission. There was no difference of the rate of rescue surgery between weekends and workdays. Subgroup analysis revealed that interventional procedures for hot gallbladder were less frequently performed on patients admitted during weekends. Conclusions Our analysis revealed that demographic and clinical profiles of patients admitted during weekends do not differ significantly from workdays, but the therapeutic strategy may be different probably due to lack of availability of services and skillsets during weekends. The first wave of the COVID-19 pandemic did not impact on this difference.

This study advances insights on ozone (O 3) concentration temporal cycles in Arizona, exploring differences between weekdays and weekends to understand the impact of anthropogenic activities on O 3 fluctuations. By examining data from six areas across Arizona and with a more detailed look across the Phoenix metropolitan area, this study compares O 3 and NO 2 levels based on day of the week and time of day as well as during five distinct seasons between January 2015 and December 2021: fall (Sep–Nov), winter (Dec–Feb), spring (Mar–May), dry summer (June), and monsoon summer (Jul–Aug). Results highlight associations between O 3 levels and O 3 precursor levels, particularly for nitrogen oxides (NO x) and volatile organic compounds (VOCs). Results show that O 3 levels are contingent on diurnal, day-of-week, and seasonally-dependent factors. This dependence influences the phenomena called the "weekend effect", which is most clearly observed at urban sites across Arizona in fall and winter seasons, wherein O 3 concentrations exhibit higher levels during weekends compared to weekdays. This study reveals opposing features during Arizona's warmer months and especially the monsoon summer period in which O 3 regimes reverse from VOC-sensitive (in fall and winter) to transition and NO x -sensitive regimes. A specific case study for Phoenix during the first COVID-19 lockdown (spring 2020) accounting for planetary boundary layer height normalization of gas concentrations shows that although NO 2 was reduced in March–April compared to other years, O 3 was also reduced due to a regional O 3 response as most areas surrounding western U.S. were typically either transitioning to, or already under, a NO x -limited regime. These findings provide insights into understanding the intricate relationship among anthropogenic emissions, seasonal fluctuations, and pollutant emissions and transport that influence O 3 levels across Arizona, potentially providing guidance for future study designs focused on effective control strategies for the sensitive months with most exceedances (∼June–August). • Weekend effect characteristics most evident in winter and fall seasons. • Monsoon period shown to be distinct from other periods for O 3 characteristics. • Regional O 3 reductions are influential for O 3 levels during Mar–Apr of COVID lockdown period.
