This research investigates how shopping on a weekday or a weekend moderates the impact of music on supermarket sales. Contrary to the intuitive beliefs of interviewed store managers, a meta-analysis, two field studies, and a controlled experimental study indicate that playing pleasant music (vs. no music) in supermarkets on weekdays enhances sales, an effect not found on weekends. Theorizing and interviews with shoppers suggest a potential reason for this week-part difference: Shoppers are more mentally depleted on weekdays (vs. weekends). A final study demonstrates and tests mental depletion as the driving factor for how shoppers are affected by music during different week parts. When consumers are depleted (e.g., on weekdays) music increases affect, which mediates the impact of music on sales. The results of the studies further indicate that week part plays a significant role in determining the impact of in-store music on sales. Background and objective: Extending a consistent pharmacy antimicrobial stewardship weekend service was a newly implemented initiative. We sought to evaluate the impact of incorporating an Infectious Diseases (ID)-trained clinical pharmacist into an antimicrobial stewardship program (AMS) during weekends. Results: The number of documented interventions was 451 on 362 patients compared to 115 interventions on 108 patients during the pre-implementation period (p = 0.04), with interventions primarily targeting Watch antibiotics, as classified by the WHO AWaRe classification. A reduction in the LOS was observed, with a median of 16 days (8–34) during the post-implementation period compared to 27.5 days (10–56) during the pre-implementation period (p = 0.001). The median DOT increased during the post-implementation period to 8 (6–11), versus the increase to 7 (4–11) during the pre-implementation period (p ≤ 0.001). Finally, there was no significant difference observed in healthcare-associated CDI and infection-related readmission. Methods: This is a retrospective single-center, pre–post quasi-experimental study. Data including the documented pharmacist interventions were collected from the electronic medical record (EMR), the pre-implementation phase was in 2020, and post-implementation was in 2021. The primary outcome was to identify the number of AMS interventions through prospective audit and feedback review analysis. Secondary outcomes included antibiotic days of therapy (DOT), length of hospital stay (LOS), healthcare-associated Clostridioides difficile infection (CDI), and infection-related readmission. Conclusions: The pharmacist-driven weekend AMS is an opportunity for pharmacists to intervene and optimize patients' care plans. This initiative demonstrated significant increased AMS-related interventions, promoted judicious antimicrobial use, and contributed to a reduced length of hospital stay. Background and Objectives: The number of people with dementia and the burden on families to care for them are increasing. As a result, families are affected in their use of time to carry out daily activities. This study compared family caregivers of dementia patients (dementia family) and non-family caregivers of dementia patients (non-dementia family), reflecting their characteristics on weekdays and weekends. Methods: There were 92 participants each in the groups dementia family and non-dementia family. Each group was divided into 121 people on weekdays and 71 people on weekends. Time usage was measured by occupational area. The variables assessed were “lack of time,” “tiredness,” “life satisfaction,” and “leisure satisfaction.” Variables including “house chores sharing” and “role division” were also assessed. The time usage of the Korea National Statistical Office’s 2019 “time use survey” was reclassified based on the occupational areas of the Occupational Therapy Practice Framework-Fourth Edition, and time usage and satisfaction were analyzed. Frequency analysis and independent t-test were used for statistical processing. Results: On weekdays, the dementia family showed less time usage in the “leisure” area for men and “social participation” area for women than the non-dementia family. On weekends, dementia family showed less time usage in the “activities of daily living” (ADLs) area than the non-dementia family and women in dementia family showed less time usage in “ADLs” area compared to women in the non-dementia family. Satisfaction was found to be higher in terms of “lack of time” and “tiredness” on weekdays and “tiredness” on weekends in dementia family than in the non-dementia family. Conclusions: Time usage and satisfaction of dementia family and non-dementia family showed differences during weekdays and weekends. These results suggest that for family caregivers of dementia patients, it is necessary to improve the efficient use of time and satisfaction during weekdays and holidays.

Objective changes in people's lifestyles at different times of the day lead to changes in metro travel with respect to space and mode. Distinguishing the spatiotemporal heterogeneity characteristics of subway passenger flows at different times of the day can help guide urban functional renewal and intensive growth. Taking Shenzhen as a case study, this study examines the spatiotemporal dynamic fluctuation characteristics of subway passenger flow in terms of volume, direction, connection, and structure on weekdays, weekends, and holidays through spatiotemporal data mining and geospatial analysis from the network, station, and OD(Origin and Destination) perspectives. The results indicate the following: (1) From an overall perspective, three different types of subway passenger flow patterns exist on weekdays, holidays, and weekends: bimodal, flat peak, and small bimodal and flat peak composite patterns, respectively. Weekday subway ridership is significantly higher compared with weekends and holidays. The proportion of short-distance short-time and long-distance long-time trips increases slightly on holidays and weekends, conforming to the beta distribution. By contrast, commuter traffic remains the focus of the current subway operating system service. (2) From the station perspective, Shenzhen has only a few stations with significant differences in weekday and non-weekday patronage and sharing rates. Weekday passenger traffic is highly concentrated in residential and employment-oriented stations. Non-weekday passenger traffic is concentrated in transportation hubs and integrated stations. The high mix of land use around stations helps disperse passenger traffic and resist disturbance at different times. (3) From the OD perspective, OD passenger flow on the subway network has a power law distribution and significant hierarchical differentiation. On weekdays, subway OD passenger flow forms groups with business offices, higher education institutions, and popular business districts. On weekends, the intensity of subway OD passenger flow linkages shows varying degrees of attenuation, and the OD linkage for short-distance travel is more intense. On holidays, subway OD passenger flows form spatial linkage groups with external transportation hubs, popular scenic spots, and commercial centers as the core stations. The center of the metro topological network and that of passenger flow under different time periods are all characterized by spatial coupling. The diversification of travel on weekends and holidays, as well as the high-density mixed-development pattern in urban centers, has weakened the dependence of passenger flows on specific routes, showing a tendency to transition from the linear and multi-block on weekdays to the linear and whole block structure on holidays. This study is expected to provide a reference for the fine operation and organization of subways and the improvement of the quality of urban activity spaces.

This study has found that the wintertime (November–March) air quality in Seoul, Korea had been deteriorated in weekends during the period of 2016–2019. Specifically, the concentration of particulate matters (PMs) of aerodynamic diameter less than 2.5 μm (PM2.5) in weekends (Saturday–Sunday) was up to 30% higher than that in the mid-week (Wednesday–Thursday) days (probability value < 0.01). As the weekend PM concentration had been lower than the mid-week values by 10% until 2015, such a sudden change in the intra-weekly air quality is unexpected. This study finds out that the deterioration of air quality in weekends can be attributed primarily to secondary particle formations and external transports from China (Shandong and northeast provinces) and domestic provinces (southern Gyeonggi and Chungcheong in Korea) to Seoul. High concentration of PM2.5 on weekend could be partially explained by the differences in the concentrations of inorganic PM components including nitrate, ammonium, and sulfate between weekends and mid-week days. About 40% of the differences are attributed to the domestic sources located in the southern region to Seoul. However, domestic emission from power generations and industry sector in southern source region on weekends does not well explain the variations of the PM precursors in weekends. Therefore, a clear strategy for improving air quality on the weekend in Seoul requires steady efforts to accurately calculate regional emissions and to reveal missing emissions sources. Emergency department (ED) visits can be divided into urgent and non-urgent. A delay in seeking medical help, especially in urgent cases, can lead to fatal consequences, along with a higher rate of complications and morbidity. Coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) pandemic spread led to restrictions and eventually quarantines. We investigated the impact of the COVID-19 spread and quarantine on ED visits rates comparing to parallel periods in preceding years (2013–2019). In addition, we compared this decrease to holidays and weekends, times in which a decrease in ED visits is seen. This was a descriptive retrospective study. Causes of ED referrals were divided into urgent and non-urgent, then into different subcategories including infectious, cardiac, etc. For the spring COVID-192020 quarantine period, a 56.3% decrease of mean ED visits per day was seen, as compared to preceding years (55.7% and 98.9% respectively). This decrease was also statistically evident when comparing the urgent and non-urgent causes separately and for all sub-categories. This pattern of decrease also showed statistical evidence of fewer ED visits during holidays for most comparisons, in which lower ED visit rates are expected. Significantly lower rates of ED visits were demonstrated during the COVID-19 quarantine period, as compared to preceding years and main holidays and weekends, a decrease that was also demonstrated for urgent life-threatening causes. Our findings can be used to inform a wide range of stakeholders, including regional planners, historians, sociologists, and international healthcare organizations. Background: The purpose of this study was to investigate daily physical activity (PA) patterns of 8- to 9-year-old Irish children from socially disadvantaged areas. Methods: Children (N = 408) were asked to wear an ActiGraph accelerometer for a minimum of 4 days. Based on mean daily moderate- to vigorous-intensity PA accumulation, participants were grouped into sex-specific quartiles (Q4, most active; Q1, least active). Principal component analysis was used to identify distinct time blocks for weekdays and weekend days. Results: Overall, 213 participants (8.7 [0.5] y) met accelerometer inclusion criteria. Of these, 56.7% met the 60 minutes of moderate- to vigorous-intensity PA per day guidelines, with males statistically significantly more likely to do so than females (P <.01). Principal component analysis revealed 3 distinct time periods on weekdays and 4 distinct periods on weekends that children were active. The total difference in moderate- to vigorous-intensity PA accumulation between Q4 (most active) and Q1 (least active) was greatest in the after-school time period (male: 49 min and female: 33 min) on weekdays and in the evening time period on weekends (male: 33 min and female: 19 min). This study focuses on anticipatory happiness during the week (current happiness but considering the rest of the week) in employees confined due to COVID-19. In Diary Study 1, 71 employees with home-based telework participated on five consecutive workdays (Monday-Friday). We found a quadratic change pattern with an acceleration of the increase in anticipatory happiness right before the weekend. Results also confirmed a positive association between daily variability in anticipatory happiness and daily fluctuations in job satisfaction and positive affect. In Diary Study 2, 83 employees who carried out an essential activity outside the home participated for two consecutive weeks. Our findings showed a cubic change pattern where anticipatory happiness reaches its highest average score on Friday, dropping sharply on Monday, and then the cycle (rhythm) begins again. The web publishing strategy of media organizations is a very important factor in their success. The aim of the strategy is to cover their audience’s news article consumption needs, but is this valid? In order to address this question, this paper compares data from two studies, namely a study that explored the publishing patterns of the top 22 Greek media websites and a second study that focused on web news article consumption habits. The results indicate that there are various deviations between the compared data, and thus the study concludes that Greek media organization publishing strategy is not aligned with the audience consumption needs. The identified discrepancies have to do with the published news articles after 14:00 during weekdays as well as the news articles that are available during weekends. Additionally, it seems that media organizations publish a very limited number of articles on specific thematic categories that the audience is interested in reading. Specific actions were also proposed in order to alleviate those deviations and thus improve the readability of the media organizations.

Purpose: To determine the impact of hospital admissions and operations at weekends on two common emergency general surgeries (cholecystectomy and appendectomy) and their outcomes. Methods: A total of 539 patients were included in the study. Information on patient demographics, comorbidities, admission date, surgery date, complications, readmission, and follow-up details were collected from electronic medical records. Results: Most patients were admitted to hospital on weekdays (n = 391), and 444 surgeries were performed on weekdays, while 86 surgeries were performed at weekends. No significant difference was found between the type of surgery performed on weekday and weekend admissions (P = 0.384). Surgical procedures of patients admitted to hospital on a weekend tended to be delayed by a median of one day compared with weekday admissions, with a similar overall length of stay for both groups. Weekend admissions were associated with higher complication rates than weekday admissions (12.2 vs. 6.1%). Patients who were operated on at weekends were younger in age than those admitted on weekdays (32 vs. 30 years old, P = 0.019). More appendectomies were performed at weekends (77.9% vs. 45.9%), and fewer cholecystectomies were performed (22.1 vs. 54.1%, P = 0.000). Conclusions: The surgical procedures of patients admitted to hospital on weekends tended to be delayed by 1 day and had a higher rate of complications. Objective: This article investigates whether weekend work is associated with higher levels of work–family conflict (WFC) among parents, and whether resources like schedule control or presence of a partner mitigate this effect. Background: The 24/7 economy requires many workers to work on weekends. Nevertheless, research on the impact of weekend work on families, and on WFC in particular, is underdeveloped, with previous studies relying on cross‐sectional data and small samples. Method: Associations between regular weekend work and a measure of WFC are examined using data from 14 waves of The Household, Income and Labour Dynamics in Australia (HILDA) Survey. The sample is restricted to workers aged 18–64 years with parenting responsibilities for children aged 17 or less (7747 individuals, 40,192 observations). Both pooled ordinary least squares and fixed‐effects regression models are estimated. Results: Among both genders, weekend workers have significantly higher levels of WFC than those who only work weekdays. WFC is particularly high for those who work weekends and simultaneously have little control over their schedule. Furthermore, weekend work affects WFC similarly for couple and single parents and, within dual‐earner families, independently of the partner's working schedule. Conclusion: Weekend work generally has a detrimental effect on workers' ability to combine employment with parenting commitments. With the rapid development of Information and Communications Technology (ICT) and transportation infrastructure, the flows of people between cities have become the cornerstone of shaping regional integration. Although research studies about the movement of people have aroused widespread interest in academia, research about the temporal and spatial dynamics of daily mobility between cities is sparse, which is called the temporal heterogeneity of mobility between cities. This research aims to study the temporal and spatial changes (Heterogeneity) of population mobility between cities, using big data obtained through China Unicom, in terms of mapping the spatial network of population mobility and complex network analysis, from which the following findings emerge: (1) On weekends, the gap between cities in the number of floating population flow and the capacity of transferring population has become smaller, indicating that there is better coordination between cities on weekends. (2) There are huge differences in population flow between cities, which reflects the imbalance of urban development, population is more concentrated in cities with higher level of development. (3) The heterogeneity of population flow between cities at weekdays and weekends is closely related to the city's hierarchy, which can help us study the hierarchical structure of China's cities from a dynamic perspective. Sleep is vital for healthy development of young children; however, it is not understood how the quality and quantity vary between the weekends and weekdays (WE-WD). Research focused on older children has demonstrated that there is significant WE-WD variability and that this is associated with adiposity. It is unclear how this is experienced among preschoolers. This study explored: (a) the accuracy of WE-WD sleep as reported in parental logbooks compared with accelerometers; (b) the difference between WE and WD total sleep time, sleep efficiency, and timing, as assessed by accelerometers; and (c) the association between the variability of these metrics and adiposity. Eighty-seven preschoolers (M = 46; 4.48 ± 0.89 years) wore an accelerometer on their right hip for 7 days. Parents were given logbooks to track "lights out" times (sleep onset) and out of bed time (sleep offset). Compared with accelerometers, parental logbook reports indicated earlier sleep onset and later sleep offset times on both WEs and WDs. Accelerometer-derived total sleep time, sleep efficiency, and onset/offset were not significantly different on the WEs and WDs; however, a sex effect was observed, with males going to bed and waking up earlier than females. Correlation analyses revealed that variability of sleep onset times throughout the week was positively correlated with percentage of fat mass in children. Results suggest that variability of sleep onset may be associated with increased adiposity in preschool children. U.S. workweeks are long compared to workweeks in other rich countries. Much less well-known is that Americans are more likely to work at night and on weekends. The authors examine the relationship between these two phenomena using the American Time Use Survey and time-diary data from France, Germany, the Netherlands, and the United Kingdom. Only small portions of the U.S.–European differences are attributable to observable characteristics. Adjusting for demographic and occupational differences, Americans’ incidence of night and weekend work would drop by no more than 10% if the average European workweek prevailed. Background: The association between medication error incidence and time (day shift vs night shift) have not been extensively studied in Saudi Arabia, this study aimed to answer this question: is there a relationship between medication error incidence and time of the day (day shifts vs night shifts) on weekdays and weekends?. Objective: To identify whether medication errors and their sub-categories are significantly different between day shifts, night shifts, during weekdays and weekends. Methods: A retrospective analysis of medication errors reported by health-care practitioners from January 2018 to December 2019 through the Electronic-Occurrence Variance Reporting System (E-OVR) of a university teaching hospital in Riyadh, Saudi Arabia. Statistical analysis was used to determine the differences between the medication errors and their sub-categories and day and night shifts during weekdays (from Sunday to Thursday) and weekends (Friday and Saturday). Results: A total of 2626 medication errors were reported over 2 years from January 2018 to December 2019. The most prevalent sub-category of medication errors was prescribing errors (55%), while the least common sub-category of medication errors was administration errors (0.6%). There was a statistically significant difference between medication errors and day of the week. Medication errors that happened on weekdays were greater than at weekends (P = 0.01). During weekends, medication errors were more likely to occur at the night shift compared to the day shift (P < 0.05). Conclusion: Timing of medication errors incidence is an important factor to be considered for improving the medication use process and improving patient safety. Abstract There is not much evidence about how diet strictness during weekends and holidays influence long-term weight loss maintenance. Our aim was to examine how dieting more or less strictly during weekends and holidays (vs. weekdays and non-holiday periods) influence weight loss maintenance. Participants (n = 108) from the Portuguese Weight Control Registry indicated whether they had a more or less strict diet regimen during weekends compared to weekdays. There are uncertainties on the influence of the days of diagnosis in a week (weekends versus weekdays) on clinical outcomes in patients with acute venous thromboembolism (VTE), including pulmonary embolism (PE) and deep vein thrombosis (DVT). The COMMAND VTE registry is a multicenter cohort study enrolling 3027 consecutive patients with acute symptomatic VTE. The current study population consisted of 337 patients diagnosed on weekends and 2690 patients diagnosed on weekdays. We compared the clinical characteristics, management strategies and 30-day outcomes between the 2 groups. The patients diagnosed on weekends more often presented with PE (72% vs. 55%, P < 0.001), and with more severe hemodynamic condition for PE patients. The patients diagnosed on weekends more often received initial parenteral anticoagulation therapy and thrombolysis than those diagnosed on weekdays. The cumulative 30-day incidence of all-cause death was not significantly different between the two groups among PE patients (diagnosis on weekends: 6.2% vs. diagnosis on weekdays: 6.5%, P = 0.87), as well as among DVT patients (0.0% vs. 1.5%, P = 0.24). The most frequent cause of deaths was fatal PE in both groups among PE patients. The risks for recurrent VTE and major bleeding at 30-day were not significantly different between the 2 groups among PE patients, nor among DVT only patients. In conclusion, the VTE patients diagnosed on weekends presented more often with PE, and with more severe condition for PE patients. Smartphones are omnipresent and offer real-time information on the go. Predominantly, adolescent girls have been found to be engaged in levels of physical activity (PA) below the daily recommended guideline of at least 60 minutes of moderate-to-vigorous intensity, and especially during weekends. Lack of sufficient PA can lead to a risk of contracting non-communicable diseases. The purpose of this exploratory study was to investigate the efficacy of using mobile applications (app) (i.e. MapMyFitness [MMF]) in changing adolescent girls' PA behaviour during weekends. It also examined the perceived benefits, challenges and recommendations for using mobile apps. Thirty-six participants aged 15 years (Mage = 14.9; SD = 0.30) from a convenience sample volunteered and took part in the present study, which spanned four weekends. Quantitative results showed a significant difference in the mean step count between experimental and control groups during week two, probably due to the novelty effect when the participants were introduced to the new MMF mobile app. Overall, the use of the MMF app seems to be able to attenuate the decline of adolescent girls' PA level during weekends. Qualitative results revealed benefits of using mobile apps to promote PA, such as a sense of autonomy in selecting PA, the ability to view friends' postings of PA and self-monitoring of PA. The study revealed specific challenges to using such PA mobile apps - in particular, factors such as the cumbersome and confusing functions in the app that discouraged users from performing PA. Recommendations included allowing users to customise their accounts, simplifying the app's functions, and including rewards and videos as motivators to enhance users' PA experience. Although mobile apps may have the potential to encourage participation in PA, a careful selection of mobile app functions is required to engage adolescent girls to continue to use it for PA. OBJECTIVES A weekend effect with increased mortality has previously been reported in surgical patients and those with acute myocardial infarction (MI). We hypothesized that a similar phenomenon may exist in coronary artery bypass grafting (CABG). METHODS Patients undergoing non-elective isolated CABG (2011–2017) were included from a multicentre regional Society of Thoracic Surgeons database. Patients were stratified by weekend versus weekday operations and further analysed by specific day of the week. RESULTS A total of 14 374 patients underwent urgent or emergency isolated CABG with 410 (2.9%) operated on over the weekend. Weekend operations were more often emergency (36.1% vs 5.0%, P  < 0.001) and more likely to be in the setting of MI (70.0% vs 51.2%, P  < 0.001). Cardiopulmonary bypass times were similar [91 min (71-114) vs 94 min (74-117), P  = 0.0749] and the frequency of complete revascularization equivalent (83.4% vs 85.3%, P  = 0.284) between weekend and weekday operations. In risk-adjusted analyses, there was no increased odds for mortality in patients operated on over the weekend [odds ratio (OR) 1.07, P  = 0.811]; however, there was an increased odds of major morbidity (OR 1.37, P  = 0.034). Furthermore, compared with Monday, morbidity increased as the operative day approached the weekend (Tuesday 0.98, P  = 0.828; Wednesday 1.07, P  = 0.469; Thursday 1.12, P  = 0.229; Friday 1.19, P  = 0.041; weekend 1.47, P  = 0.014). CONCLUSIONS While patients requiring surgery on the weekend are higher risk, there is no independent effect of weekend surgery on mortality. This article explores the expanded and transformed nature of the psychological work contract for forms of cultural and artistic labour in precarious conditions. The forms of passionate work found within cultural production are argued to form a new model for governing our subjective involvement in and attachment to work. This more expansive and demanding relationship with work has become generalized beyond the specific area of cultural production into employment relationships more generally. In doing so the expanded psychological contract of work comes to operate as a form of logistical media and infrastructural governance, connecting the micropolitics of governing labour with larger structural conditions of precarity and instability. Thus, while work today is less stable in what it offers, it demands even greater psychological investment despite increased uncertainty. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

A personal narrative is presented which explores the author's experience of being a full-time residence hall director and spending a weekend off-campus and visiting family.

South Korean workers have problems getting optimal sleep because they work excessively, and this affects their sleep duration and quality. To compensate for their lack of sleep on weekdays, South Korean workers have a different lifestyle on weekends, which is reflected by the terms 'Hot Friday' and 'Monday Sickness'. However, an irregular lifestyle may be a risk factor for poor health even if insufficient sleep during weekdays is supplemented by sleep on the weekend. The objective of this study was to analyse the association between depressive mood and sleep duration variance on weekdays and weekends among South Korean workers. Data from the 2016 Korea National Health and Nutrition Examination Surveys were used. Linear regression analysis was performed to determine the association between variance in sleep duration and the Patient Health Questionnaire‐9 (PHQ‐9) score. Additional sub‐group analyses were performed to evaluate associations between variance in sleep duration and sex, marital status and perceived health status. The average sleep duration was 419.44 min on weekdays and 463.29 min on weekends. The average sleep duration on weekends was 11.73% longer than on weekdays. There was a positive association between variance in sleep and PHQ‐9 score (per 1% increased, β = 0.002, p =.0074), and variance in sleep duration affected health regardless of the direction of the change (positive: increased sleep or negative: decreased sleep). Further, sub‐group analyses showed that variances in sleep duration are associated with increased PHQ‐9 scores in females and in individuals who were single or who had problems in their marriage. Our findings suggest that there is a relationship between variance in sleep duration and depressive symptoms among South Korean workers. Thus, healthcare professionals should suggest alternatives for optimal sleep duration and sleep methods to ensure the psychiatric health of workers. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Introduction: It is not known whether there are any differences in dialysis outcomes of hemodialysis patients on Monday, Wednesday and Friday (MWF) schedule and patients on Tuesday, Thursday and Saturday (TTS) schedules. Patients on TTS schedule who receive one of the treatments on weekends may have worse outcomes compared with patients on MWF schedule as a result of weekend effect. In this study we compared the mortality and clinical performance measures for hemodialysis care, between patients on these two different hemodialysis schedules.Methods: This single center study was conducted on chronic hemodialysis patients above 18 years of age at the time of initiation of hemodialysis who were under thrice weekly hemodialysis treatment for at least 12 months. Mortality and hemodialysis related quality indices were retrospectively compared between patients on MWF or TTS schedules.Results: A total of 188 patients (114 male and 74 female) were included. The mean age of the patients at the start of dialysis was 50.9 ± 18.4 years and median hemodialysis vintage was 60.5 (12 to 369) months. Ninety-nine patients were on MWF schedule and 89 patients were on TTS schedule. More patients on MWF schedule reached the target laboratory values and patients on MWF schedule had a survival advantage compared with patients on TTS schedule.Conclusion: Hemodialysis patients on MWF schedule may receive higher quality of care and may have better outcomes compared with patients on TTS schedule. Background: Weekend admission to the hospital has been found to be associated with higher in-hospital mortality rates, but the cause for this phenomenon remains controversial. US based studies have been limited in their characterization of the weekend patient population, making it difficult to draw conclusions about the implications of this effect.Methods: A retrospective cohort study, examining de-identified, patient level data from 2015 to 2017 at US academic medical centers submitting data to the Vizient database, comparing demographic and clinical risk profiles, as well as mortality, cost and length of stay, between weekend and weekday patient populations. Between-group differences in mortality were assessed using the chi-square test for categorical measures and Wilcoxon rank-sum test for continuous measures. Logistic regression models were used to test the multivariate association of weekend admission and other patient-level factors with death, LOS, etc. RESULTS: We analyzed 10,365,605 adult inpatient encounters. Within the weekend patient population, 30.6% of patients were categorized as having either a major or extreme risk of mortality on admission, as compared to 23.7% on weekdays (p < 0.001). We found a significantly increased unadjusted mortality rate associated with weekend admission (OR 1.46; 95% CI 1.45-1.47) which was substantially attenuated after adjusting for disease severity and other demographic covariates, though remained significant (OR 1.05; 95% CI 1.04-1.06). In the subgroup of non-elective admissions, the unadjusted OR for death was 1.14 (95% CI 1.13-1.15), and the adjusted OR was 1.04 (95% CI 1.03-1.05). Weekend admission was associated with a longer median LOS (4 vs 3 days in the weekday group; p < 0.01), but a lower median cost ($8224 vs $9999 dollars in the weekday group; p < 0.01).Conclusion: The patient population admitted on weekends is proportionally higher risk than the population admitted on weekdays, and the observed weekend mortality effect is largely attributable to this risk imbalance. This paper examines the weekend effect in futures markets and presents rational and behavioral reasons for its existence. Specifically, we document a weekend effect (Friday's return minus the following Monday's return) in futures markets. The weekend effect occurs partly because of asymmetric risk between long and short positions around weekends; the weekend effect increases when short positions are relatively more risky. In addition, we find that both lagged and contemporaneous changes in investor sentiment are related to the weekend effect. These results are consistent with the investor sentiment literature that finds that mood improves on Fridays but deteriorates on Mondays. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Food insecurity is experienced by one in five children in the United States. Weekend feeding programs administered in schools are designed to alleviate food insecurity and rely on the ability of school administrators to correctly identify students in need. While the central goal of this program is to alleviate food insecurity, an ancillary benefit may be increased attendance on days when the food is distributed. We surveyed 283 households that participated in a weekend feeding program and compared them to households that were identified by school personnel as eligible for the program but did not participate in the program. We find that, in comparison to children who are on the wait list for the program, those students receiving the BackPack were more likely to attend school on Fridays, the day that food is typically distributed, than the comparison group. School personnel were able to accurately identify children who were food insecure and weekend feeding programs may have appreciable effects on school attendance in the long run. A personal narrative is presented which explores the author's experience of participating in the Hardy/Larkin Country Walk at Kingston Maurward College from August 9-11, 2019 aimed to make participants be more familiar with the poems of Thomas Hardy and Philip Larkin and ultimately develop love and appreciation for their work.

Background: Admission outside normal business hours has been associated with prolonged door-to-treatment times and poorer patient outcomes, the so called "weekend effect. " This is the first examination of the weekend effect in a telestroke service that uses multi-modal computed tomography. Aims: To examine differences in workflow and triage between in-hours and out-of-hours calls to a telestroke service. Methods: All patients assessed using the Northern New South Wales (N-NSW) telestroke service from April 2013 to January 2019 were eligible for inclusion (674 in total; 539 with complete data). The primary outcomes measured were differences between in-hours and out-of-hours in door-to-call-to-decision-to-needle times, differences in the proportion of patients confirmed to have strokes or of patients selected for reperfusion therapies or patients with a modified Rankin Score (mRS ≤ 2) at 90 days. Results: There were no significant differences between in-hours and out-of-hours in any of the measured times, nor in the proportions of patients confirmed to have strokes (67.6 and 69.6%, respectively, p = 0.93); selected for reperfusion therapies (22.7 and 22.6%, respectively, p = 0.56); or independent at 3 months (34.8 and 33.6%, respectively, p = 0.770). There were significant differences in times between individual hospitals, and patient presentation more than 4.5 h after symptom onset was associated with slower times (21 minute delay in door-to-call, p = 0.002 and 22 min delay in door-to-image, p = 0.001). Conclusions: The weekend effect is not evident in the Northern NSW telestroke network experience, though this study did identify some opportunities for improvement in the delivery of acute stroke therapies. Objective: Motor vehicle crashes are a leading cause of injury death in the United States, and Memorial Day weekend is one of six holiday periods with an increased number of motor vehicle fatalities in the United States. However, few motor vehicle fatality comparisons were made between Memorial Day weekend and non-holiday periods. Our aims were to determine which day(s) during the holiday had highest motor vehicle fatality risk compared to non-holiday travel and to identify potential risk factors. Results: Of 43,457 traffic fatalities studied, 15,292 (35%) occurred during the holiday, with Saturday being deadliest but Monday having highest odds of traffic fatality. Both sexes, all years, age < 65, drivers and passengers, rural and urban, and all regions in the United States were at increased risk during the holiday versus non-holiday periods. People sleep less in response to setting social clocks earlier relative to the sun clocks. We proposed here a model-based approach for estimating sleep loss as the difference between weekend and weekday risetimes divided on the difference between weekend risetime and weekday bedtime. We compared this approach with a traditional approach to estimating sleep curtailment as the difference in weekly average sleep duration in two conditions. Weekday and weekend sleep times reported for 320 samples provided possibility of testing whether evening types with later weekend sleep times and larger social jetlag differ from morning types with earlier weekend sleep times and smaller social jetlag on amount of sleep lost (1) throughout the week and (2) in response to an advance of weekday wakeups, for instance, after the expected installation of perennial Daylight Saving Time (DST). We found that (1) an amount of sleep lost due to advancing shift of weekday wakeups depends upon neither chronotype nor weekend sleep times nor social jetlag, (2) a very large amount of sleep is usually lost by evening types with later weekend sleep times and larger social jetlag and (3) an essential sleep loss is caused by our usual work/school schedules, even in morning types with early weekend sleep times and small social jetlag. As compared to such permanent sleep losses experienced by any types, an additional loss due to switching from Standard Time (ST) to perennial DST are expected to be relatively small. We also found that the traditional way of calculation of sleep curtailment leads to paradoxical conclusions, such as (1) sleep loss is larger when social jetlag is smaller, not larger, (2) sleep loss is larger when weekend sleep times are earlier, not later, (3) despite 1-h difference between two student samples in weekday wakeups, their sleep losses can be identical. Introduction: Survival after in-hospital cardiac arrest (IHCA) has been reported to be worse for arrests at night or during weekends.This study aimed to determine whether measured cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR) quality metrics might explain this difference in outcomes.Methods: IHCA data was collected by the Pediatric Resuscitation Quality (pediRES-Q) collaborative for patients <18 years. Metrics of CPR quality [chest compression rate, depth and fraction] were measured using monitordefibrillator pads, and events were compared by time of day and day of week.Results: We evaluated 6915 sixty-second epochs of chest compression (CC) data from 239 subjects between October 2015 and March 2019, across 18 hospitals. There was no significant difference in CPR quality metrics during day (07:00-22:59) versus night (23:00-06:59), or weekdays (Monday 07:00 to Friday 22:59) versus weekends (Friday 23:00 to Monday 06:59).There was also no difference in rate of return of circulation. However, survival to hospital discharge was higher for arrests that occurred during the day (39.1%) vs. nights (22.4%, p = 0.015), as well as on weekdays (39.9%) vs. weekends (19.1%, p = 0.003).Conclusions: For pediatric IHCA where CC metrics were obtained, there was no significant difference in CPR quality metrics or rate of return of circulation by time of day or day of week. There was higher survival to hospital discharge when arrests occurred during the day (vs. nights), or on weekdays (vs. weekends), and this difference was not related to disparities in CC quality. Background: The increasing prevalence of childhood obesity is a global concern. Although childhood obesity has grown as a result of a complex array of interactions among multiple behavioural, biological, and environmental factors, excessive screen time (ST) and low levels of physical activity (PA) are often discussed as causal factors. Therefore, it is beneficial to identify risky family behavioural patterns contributing to the increasing prevalence of obesity even in pre-schoolers. Objective: The main aim of the study was to assess whether parental obesity and parent-child behavioural patterns (PA and ST) affect the odds of overweight/obesity in 4-to-7-year-old preschool children. Methods: We analysed seven-day PA and ST behaviour among families with pre-schoolers that included 194 preschool children (88 girls and 106 boys) and their parents (165 mothers and 111 fathers). PA was monitored by means of unsealed Yamax pedometers for at least eight hours a day over seven consecutive days during spring (April/May) and autumn (September/October) of 2015. ST was recorded by parents on family log book sheets. To assess the odds of parents' obesity and PA/ST variables in relation to child overweight/obesity, a logistic regression (backward method) was used. Results: Most children (n = 157) reported normal weight (87 boys, 70 girls), 37 children were overweight or obese (19 boys, 18 girls). Children's excessive ST (> 1 hour/day) (OR: 5.65/33.19 on weekdays/weekends), mothers' obesity (OR: 13.80/28.84 on weekdays/weekends), mothers' excessive ST (> 2 hours/ day) (OR: 32.46 at weekends), and children's male gender (OR: 38.69 at weekends) were significantly (p < .05) associated with higher odds of overweight/obesity in the preschool children. Conclusions: Uncovering parent-child behavioural patterns provides insight into the lifestyle of families with pre-schoolers and is a source of valuable information for designing and implementing family-based intervention programmes aimed at reducing obesity. Especially, weekends provide a suitable space for the implementation of joint family programmes aimed at reducing sedentary behaviour.

Background: Studies have shown that patients admitted to hospitals on weekends and after-hours experience worse outcome than those admitted on weekdays and daytime hours. Although admissions of patients to intensive care units (ICUs) occur 24 hours a day, not all critical care units maintain the same level of staffing during nighttime, weekends, and holidays. This raises concerns in view of evidence showing that the organizational structure of an ICU influences the outcome of critically ill patients. The objective of this study is to evaluate the effects of day and time of admission to ICU on patients’ outcome. Methods: A single-center, prospective, observational study was conducted among all consecutive admissions to ICU in a community teaching hospital during a 4-month period. Results: A total of 282 patients were admitted during the study period. Their mean age was 59.5 years (median 59, range 17–96), and the majority were male (157, 55.7%). Mean Acute Physiology and Chronic Health Evaluation (APACHE)-II score was 18.9 (median 33, range 1–45), and mean ICU length of stay was 3.1 days (median 2, range 1–19). Of the patients, 104 patients (36.9%) were admitted during weekends and 178 (63.1%) during weekdays. A total of 122 patients (43.3%) were admitted after-hours, constituting 68.5% of all admissions during weekdays. Fifty-six patients (19.9%) were admitted during daytime hours, representing 31.5% of all weekday admissions. Forty-five patients (15.9%) died in ICU. Compared to patients admitted on weekends, those admitted on weekdays had increased ICU mortality (operating room (OR)=0.437; 95% confidence interval=0.2054–0.9196; p=0.0293). Conclusion: Admissions to ICU during weekends were not independently associated with increased mortality. A linear relationship between weekdays and after-hours admissions to ICU with mortality was observed at our institution.

Context: Poorer mortality rates and quality of care in hospitals outside of office hours is well documented. The literature on adult social (long-term) care, and in particular, care homes, is much less developed. There are, however, a few studies that suggest that outside of Monday to Friday between 9.00am and 16.30pm, quality of care in care homes might be lower. Objective(s): The objective of this study was to compare the social care-related quality of life (SCRQoL) of residents in older adult care homes during office hours (0900 to 16.30) with outside of office hours (evenings and weekends). Method(s): We conducted a nested, cross-sectional study, collecting SCRQoL data using the Adult Social Care Outcomes Toolkit at two time points, office hours (Monday-Friday between 9.00 and 16.30) and outside of office hours. We did not examine nigh times in the homes. Data were collected for 99 older adult care home residents in 13 care homes (5 residential and 8 nursing) and analysed using a combination of non-parametric and parametric techniques. Findings: SCRQoL ratings were lower during the weekends and early evenings than during office hours. The differences were most pronounced in the higher order domains of social participation, occupation and control over daily life. Limitations: The study struggled to explain this variation. This work was both exploratory and small in size. We also did not collect data on levels of staffing. Implications: Further work is required to both confirm our findings and explore the reasons for the difference. Nonetheless, this study challenges the traditional model of care, in which social activities and meaningful pastimes are mostly organised during ‘office hours’. We observed evenings that were very short, as residents tended to return to their room shortly after dinner, and quiet weekends, and this was reflected in residents’ quality of life. This is contrary to the rhetoric of care homes being people’s own homes, where they would be able to choose to remain active and engaged into the evening and on the weekends, as they may have done throughout their lives.
