Food security is one of the major global challenges of the twenty-first century. World population is expected to increase by one-third, between 2009 and 2050, and in Asia, crop yield is estimated to decline by 5 to 30% from 2050 onwards compared to 1990. It is high time to seek alternatives that can increase production utilizing existing resources ensuring food security. A home garden can be a viable and sustainable alternative in this regard; nevertheless, it is often neglected. Thus, this study aims to understand the role of the home garden in maintaining household food security and enhancing rural women’s status in Nepal. Two villages of Bishnupur rural municipality, namely, Bajitpur and Musharniya were selected as study sites. 78.6% of households in Bajitpur and 68.4% households in Musharniya were found to have a home garden where crops and livestock were organized in an integrated way. The home garden was found to maintain household food security, ensure food availability for most of the seasons, access of household members to food, its utilization, and stability in production. Furthermore, 66.67% and 58.33% of women sold surplus home garden products in Bajitpur and Musharniya respectively. This signifies the role of home gardening activities in uplifting the social and economic status and, farming knowledge of rural women in both villages. However, there is a lack of extension facilities and subsidies for the home garden to encourage farmers. Therefore, different models of home gardens should be developed and disseminated, prioritizing the integration of the scientific farming system with traditional knowledge for sustainable adoption of the home garden in Nepal.

The status of women is studied from various perspectives. The status of women is defined as ‘the extent of control that a person has over her life, derived from the access to social, economic, health resources and political power and autonomy enjoyed in the process of decision making’. The status of women is also the emulative result of past and present position of women in the society which indicates whether they have been subject to discriminate or not. As women status is a vast field with a multitude of indicators, mainly indicators of the status of women are economic, health, education, governance and crime against women. The present study is an attempt to analysis the disparities in the status of women in Haryana state at two point of time for the year 2007-08 and 2015-16. For this integrative literature review, publication data indexed in Scopus was used. A search on the topic of women (in)equality in top journals, defined as level 3 or above according to the British Chartered Association of Business Schools (ABS) journal ratings, yielded 61 results. The following bibliometric analysis revealed six clusters of keywords which outlined the intellectual structure of women in engineering. By encouraging women to engage in science and engineering, society can influence gender equality and prevent further gender differences. Companies can also benefit from diversified talent pools by achieving greater competitiveness.

Biz bu tezimizde kadın erkek eşitliği problemi ve bunun fıkhi düşünceye yansımasını imkânlar ölçüsünde incelemeye çalıştık. Bu çalışmamıza kadın erkek beyninin fizyolojik ve biyolojik farklılığı ve bu probleme etkilerini inceleyerek başladık.Birinci bölümde ilk çağda kadının durumunu incelerken doğu ve güneydoğu Asya'da Çin'de Tibet toplumunda eski Türklerde Mezopotamya da Sümer'de Babil de Asur'da Anadolu da Hititler'de Hurriler'de ege bölgesinde mısır da Suriye ve Filistin'de İran'da roma da İslam'dan önce ortaçağ türk devletlerinde kadının sosyo kültürel yapısına konumuna baktık. Daha sonra Ortaçağda kadını incelerken Yahudilikte kadının konumunu Hristiyanlıkta kadının konumunu cahiliye döneminden İslam'a geçiş sürecinde kadının konumu cahiliye ve İslam da kadının konumuna ilişkin değerlendirmeleri irdeledik. İkinci bölümde ise İslam'da kadın erkek eşitliği probleminin fıkhi düşünceye yansımalarını ortaya koymaya çalıştık. Bu bağlamda klasik dönem müelliflerin görüşlerine ve çağdaş yazarların ortaya koydukları yeni yaklaşımları ele almaya çalıştık. Ne feminist iddiaların ve ne de kadın karşıtı söylemlerin her iki cinse de mutluluk veremeyeceği; yalnızca karşılıklı anlayışın hâkim olduğu bir arada yaşama fikrinin taraflara ve toplumlara mutluluk getireceğini kolaylıkla söyleyebiliriz. Çalışmamız neticesinde kadın ve erkeğin farklı fizyolojik, biyolojik ve psikolojik özelliklere sahip oldukları ve buna göre kadınla erkeğin eşit değil, farklı nitelikleriyle birlikte eşdeğer oldukları kanaatine ulaştık.Anahtar Kelimeler: Kadın, erkek, eşitlik, İslam'da kadın, kadının konumu In this thesis, we tried to examine the problem of equality between men and women and the reflection of this on the idea of jurisprudence.We started this study by examining the physiological and biological differences of male and female brain and their effects on this problem.The first part examines the situation of women in the early ages in eastern and southeastern Asia, Tibetan society in China, ancient Turks, Mesopotamia, Sumer, Babylon, Assyria, Anatolia, the Hittites, Hurrians, Egypt, Syria, and Palestine, Iran. We looked at the socio-cultural structure of women in medieval Turkish states before Islam in Rome. Then, while examining women in the Middle Ages, we examined the position of women in Judaism, the position of women in Christianity and the position of women in the transition from jahiliyya period to Islam and the position of women in Islam.In the second part, we tried to reveal the reflection of the problem of equality between women and men in Islamic thought. In this context, we tried to address the views of the authors of the classical period and the new approaches put forward by contemporary writers. Neither the feminist claims nor the anti-women rhetoric can give happiness to both sexes; we can easily say that the idea of coexistence dominated only by mutual understanding will bring happiness to the parties and communities. As a result of our study, we have reached the conclusion that men and women have different physiological, biological and psychological characteristics and accordingly, women and men are not equal but they are equivalent with different qualities.Keywords: Women, men, equality, women in Islam, women's position 130

`Özbek Destanlarında Kadın Motifi` adlı tezde genel olarak Özbek destanlarında anlatmaya bağlı metin türlerinin yapı unsurlarından biri olan kişiler bağlamında önemli bir rol üstlenen kadın kahramanlar üzerinde durulmuştur. Özbek destanlarındaki kadının ailedeki yeri, toplumsal olarak üstlenmiş olduğu konumu, işlevi tespit edilmeye çalışılmıştır. Tez, giriş bölümü ile birlikte toplam üç kısımdan oluşmaktadır. Giriş kısmında antropolojik (işlevsel) yöntem esas alınarak Türk kültüründe ve Özbek destanlarında yer alan kahramanlardan hareketle kadının aile, yönetim ve savaşçı kimliği hakkında genel bilgi verilmiştir. Birinci bölümde Özbek destanlarından hareketle ailede çok önemli bir yer teşkil eden kadının anne kimliği, annenin çocuklarından ayrılışı, annenin aklı, şefkati, sevgisi, anneye saygı konuları işlenmiştir. Bunların yanında üvey anne ile evlatlık ilişkileri ve sütannelik üzerinde de durulmuştur. Kadının evlilik kurumunda eş olarak üstlendiği rolü, âşık olması, evliliği, evlilik çeşitleri, kız isteme, nişan, çeyiz ve düğün merasimleri, çocuksuzluk, hamile kalma, doğum, ad koyma, kız kardeş, abla, nine, hala, teyze, yenge, gelin, torun gibi görevleri incelenmiştir. Özbek destanlarına göre kadının toplumdaki rolleri ve işlevleri de yine birinci bölümün ikinci başlığı altında işlenmiştir. Yönetici olması, savaşması, yardımcı özelliği, rakip olması, toplumun kadına genel olarak bakışı gibi konular incelenmiştir. Kadınların toplumsal iş bölümündeki görevleri, meslekleri, kadına şiddet, kadının iftira atması ya da iftiraya uğraması, bilgeliği, misafirperverlik, namus, kıskançlık, dul kalması, eğitimi, hayvansever olması, giyim ve ziynet eşyaları, kadınların atasözlerinde yer bulması, kadınla ilgili efsaneler, destanlardaki peri ve cadılar konuları üzerinde durulmuştur. İkinci bölümde incelemiş olduğumuz Özbek destanlarının özetleri verilmiştir. Sonuç kısmında ise yapılan çalışmalarla alakalı genel bir değerlendirme yapılmıştır. In the thesis named `Women Motif in the Uzbek Epics`, mainly, female heroes, who take an important role in the context of people that are one of the structural elements of narrative text types in the Uzbek Epics, are emphasized. The position of the women in the Uzbek Epics, within the family, their communal assumed position, and the function of the women were aimed to be determined. The thesis consists of three chapters with the introduction part. In the introduction, taking the anthropological (functional) method as a basis, general information is provided about the family, management and warrior identity of women based on the heroes in Turkish culture and Uzbek epics.In the first part, the mother identity of women who have crucial place in the family, the separation of the mother from her children, the mother's wit, charitableness, love and respect for the mother are discussed based on Uzbek Epics. In addition to these, the relationships between the stepmother and the foster child and wet nursing are also emphasized. The role of the women as a spouse in the institution of marriage, falling in love, her marriage, types of marriage, asking for the girl's hand in marriage, engagement, dowry and wedding ceremonies, childlessness, getting pregnant, childbearing, giving a name, and her such roles as being a sister, an elder sister, a grandmother, a paternal aunt, a maternal aunt, an aunt-in-law, a bride and a grandchild are examined. The roles and functions of women in the society with regard to the Uzbek Epics are also discussed under the second subheading of the first part. Themes such as being an administrator, battling, assistant characteristics, being a competitor and the general view of the society to the women are analyzed. The themes that are the tasks of the women in the social division of labor, their professions, violence against women, the slander of women or being slandered, wisdom, hospitality, purity, jealousy, being widowed, education, being an animal lover, clothing and jewelry, inclusion of women in proverbs, legends related to women, fairies and witches in epics are emphasized.In the second part, the summaries of the Uzbek epics that we examined are provided. In the conclusion part, a general evaluation related to the previous studies is carried out.In this thesis, the modern annotation technique is used and the sources used are shown in the references. 280

Modern dönemle birlikte kadınlara toplumsal hayat içerisinde daha fazla yer edinme imkânı doğmuştur. Bu dönemde kadınlar kimi zaman şahsi çabalarıyla kimi zaman toplumsal destekler ile sahip oldukları statü ve hakları daha geniş alanlara yayabilmiş, Türkiye Cumhuriyeti'nin ilanıyla birlikte Mustafa Kemal Atatürk'ün gerçekleştirmiş olduğu reformlar neticesinde kadınların birçok alanda söz sahibi olmaları için adımlar atılmıştır. Cumhuriyet Türkiye'sinin en önemli siyasi figürlerinden olan Demokrat Parti'nin iktidarı döneminde kadınlar daha önceden sahip olmuş oldukları hak ve statülerini korumuş ve daha fazlası için çabalamışlardır.Hazırlanan tez, 1950-1960 yılları arasında kadınların sosyal statüsü başlığı ile üç bölümden oluşmaktadır. Birinci bölümünde kadınların sosyo-kültürel durumları ana başlığı kapsamında eğitim, spor, kadın dernekleri ve sanat içerisinde kadınları temsil eden önemli şahıs ve kuruluşlar ile birlikte sağlık alanından istifadeleri ve giyim kuşam anlayışları ele alınmıştır. İkinci bölümde siyasi yaşam içerisinde kadın başlığı altında, parlamentoda temsil edilme oranları, Demokrat Parti'de kadına bakış ve kadın milletvekilleri ve Meclis içerisindeki çalışmaları, muhalif partilerin gözünde kadın ve muhalif kadınlar, Türk Kadınlar Birliği'nin siyasetteki yeri ve etkisi ile dönemin kadın politikaları üzerine yapılan çalışmalar başlıklar halinde incelenmiştir. In this period, they had enlargen the domain of their rights and status, both by their own efforts and by the support coming from the society. As a result of the reforms that had been undertaken after the proclamation of the Republic of Turkey, by Mustafa Kemal Atatürk, new steps were achieved for women to have a voice in a variety of areas. During the rule of Democrat Party, one of the most prominent political figures of the Early- Republican era, women have maintained their rights and status and endeavored for the further.This study is comprised of three chapters under the title of social status of women in between the years 1950 1960. In the first chapter, under the main title of socio-cultural conditions of women, the prominent individual figures and institutions, which had been representing women in the fields of education, sports, arts and in woman associations; together with the way in which they benefitted from the healthcare system and their perceptions of dressing styles have been discussed. In the second chapter, under the title of women in political life, representation rates in parliament, attitudes toward women in the Democrat Party, women deputies and their role in the parliament; women in the eyes of opposition parties and women that are in opposition; the position and effects of The Turkish Women Union in the political arena and the studies on the policies regarding women have been scrutinized under different sub-topics. This paper assessed the impact of open and distance learning (ODL) in enhancing the status of women in Lagos state, Nigeria. Using a survey research method, data were gathered through a structured and an open ended questionnaire from both single and dual mode institutions (NOUN and UNILAG respectively) in Lagos state. A total of two (200) hundred female students were randomly sampled out the population. The chi-square analysis was done at a 0.05 level of significance. Both the quantitative and qualitative results show that ODL significantly enhanced the status of women in Lagos state. Women also face different types of challenges on the ODL programme which inhibit them from enjoying the programme to the fullest. It is therefore recommended that women who did not have formal educational background should be encouraged to enrol for ODL programmes so that they can compete with their women counterparts who had formal educational background; challenges faced by women on ODL programmes should be straightly addressed so that more women could be encouraged to participate in the programme.

Bu çalışma, esasen İngiliz edebiyatında George Eliot'ın Middlemarch (Middlemarch), Sarah Grand'ın The Heavenly Twins (Cennetlik İkizler) ve George Moore'un Esther Waters (Esther Waters) romanlarında kadının konumunu psikanalitik liberal feminizm yaklaşımıyla incelemeyi, söz konusu romanlardaki kadın kahramanların, Viktorya dönemi kadınlarına biçilen konumdan kurtulup kurtulamadıklarını ilk kez Türkçe olarak değerlendirmeyi amaçlamaktadır. Bu bağlamda feminizm olgusu işlenirken tezin Giriş kısmında göçebe hayattan yerleşik hayata geçilip Ortaçağ, Rönesans, Aydınlanma çağı ve on dokuzuncu yüzyılın sonuna kadar tarihsel süreç içerisinde kadının konumu ele alınmış ve o dönemlerde kadının nasıl algılandığı, kadının eğitimi, çalışma koşulları ve evlilik kurumu gibi konularda önemli düşünür ve eleştirmenlerin görüşleri ışığında incelemelere yer verilmiştir. Tezde ele alınan romanlar, psikanalitik liberal feminizm yaklaşımıyla incelendiği için, I. Bölümde liberal feminist kuramcılarının görüşlerine yer verilirken; aynı bölümde bilinçdışı ve rüyalar, semiyotik ve sembolik evreler ve anne kompleksleri ile ilgili önemli psikanalistlerin görüşleri de ele alınmıştır. Bununla birlikte bu bölümde roman karakterlerinin sahip oldukları psikolojik rahatsızlıkların psikiyatrik semptomları da açıklanmıştır. Takip eden bölümlerde (II, III ve IV) sırasıyla Middlemarch, Cennetlik İkizler ve Esther Waters romanları psikanalitik liberal feminizm yaklaşımıyla incelenmiştir. Middlemarch romanında Dorothea, toplumun ondan beklediğinden daha fazla eğitim ve bilgi edinme arzusu peşinde koşar. Cennetlik İkizler romanında Evadne ve Angelica, sıra dışı bir kadın resmi çizerler çünkü okumaya düşkün genç bir kız olan Evadne, cinsel anlamda ilk kocasına itaat etmezken; Angelica da geceleri erkek kılığında dışarıda dolaşır. Esther Waters romanında Esther, kendi istek ve düşüncelerine göre hareket ettiği için, fiziksel görünüşünden etkilendiği bir adamla evlilik dışı cinsel ilişki yaşar, evlilik dışı çocuk sahibi olur ve kendi geçimini kendisi sağlayarak, kısacası kendi ayakları üzerinde durarak kadınların bunu başarabilecekleri üzerine vurgu yapmış olur. Sonuç olarak incelenen üç romandaki başkarakterler, Viktorya dönemi İngiltere'sinde ideal kadın anlayışına uymayan ve geleneksel algıdan sıyrılarak 'New Woman' (Yeni Kadın) tipinin önünü açan ilham verici kadın karakterlerdir. Bu şekilde romancılar, kadının da bir insan olarak var olduğunu, kendi istek ve düşüncelerine göre yaşayabilmesi ve değişen dünyada ataerkil yapı tarafından baskı altına alınmadan kendisine bir birey olarak saygı duyulması gerektiğini göstermiş olurlar. Bu karakterler, ne kadar özgürlükçü ve yeni bir kadın profili çizmeye çabalasalar da içinde yaşadıkları toplum, onların özgürleşmelerine ve istedikleri doğrultuda yaşamalarına izin vermediği için, roman sonunda ya psikiyatrik rahatsızlıklar yaşarlar ya da aynı toplumda evlenmek zorunda kalarak yaşamlarına devam ederler. Fakat önemli olan bu karakterlerin roman boyunca kendi bireysellikleri ve hakları için çaba göstermeleridir. Dolayısıyla söz konusu romanlar, ataerkil düzen tarafından kadınlara dayatılan kadınlık normlarını sorgulamaktadır. Buna ek olarak roman karakterlerinde görülen özellikle akıl hastalığı gibi psikiyatrik rahatsızlıkların, kadınların, içinde yaşadıkları ataerkil toplum tarafından bastırılmaları ile ilişkili olması dolayısıyla, incelenen psikiyatrik semptomların feminizmle de yakından ilgili olduğu ortaya konmuştur. Dorothea, Evadne, Angelica ve Esther örneklerinde görüldüğü üzere bu çalışma, zihinsel kapasite açısından kadın ve erkek arasında doğuştan gelen bir farkın olmadığını fakat ataerkil toplumun, kadınların erkeklerle aynı eğitimi almalarına imkân tanımadığı için erkek-egemen toplumun, kadınlarla ilgili dayattığı önyargıların olduğunu vurgular. This study mainly aims to examine women's position in George Eliot's Middlemarch, Sarah Grand's The Heavenly Twins and George Moore's Esther Waters in British literature with regard to psychoanalytic liberal feminist approach, and to evaluate for the first time in Turkish language whether heroines in the aforementioned novels could get rid of the imposed position on women of the Victorian era or not. In this context, while the phenomenon of feminism is studied, Introduction to the dissertation deals with women's position in the historical process starting from nomadic life to settled life, through the Medieval Age, Renaissance, the Enlightenment and until the end of the nineteenth century, and it includes a study about subjects such as how women were perceived at that time, women's education, working conditions and the institution of marriage in the light of views of important thinkers and critics. As the novels studied in the dissertation are examined according to psychoanalytic liberal feminist approach while Chapter I includes the views of liberal feminist theoreticians, it also deals with the views of important psychoanalysts about the unconscious and dreams, semiotic and symbolic stages, and maternal complexes. In addition, this chapter explains the psychiatric symptoms of psychological disorders the characters in the novels have. In the following chapters (II, III and IV), the novels Middlemarch, The Heavenly Twins and Esther Waters are examined respectively within the context of psychoanalytic liberal feminist approach. In the novel Middlemarch, Dorothea pursues the desire to acquire more education and knowledge than the society expects from her. In the novel The Heavenly Twins, Evadne and Angelica draw an extraordinary female figure because Evadne, a young girl who is fond of reading, does not obey her first husband in sexual means while Angelica walks out disguised as a man at night. In the novel Esther Waters, since Esther acts according to her desires and thoughts, she experiences extramarital sexual intercourse with a man whom she is influenced by his physical appearance, she has an illegitimate child, and by providing her own livelihood, in short, by standing on her own feet, she emphasizes that women can achieve it. As a result, the main characters in the three examined novels are the inspiring female characters in the Victorian era of England that do not fit into the ideal woman's understanding and pave the way for the 'New Woman' type by getting rid of the traditional perception. In this way, the novelists show that the woman exists as a human being, can live according to her own desires and thoughts and must be respected as an individual without being oppressed by the patriarchal structure in the changing world. No matter how much these characters struggle to draw an emancipatory and new profile of women, the society they live in does not allow them to emancipate and live in the direction they desire, so at the end of the novels they either experience psychiatric disorders or have to marry in the same society to continue their lives. However, the important point is that these characters strive for their individuality and rights throughout the novels. Thus, the novels question the norms of femininity imposed on women by the patriarchal order. In addition, as psychiatric disorders especially such as mental illness in the characters in the novel are related to oppression of the women by the patriarchal society they live in, it is revealed that the psychiatric symptoms examined are also closely related to feminism. As it is seen in the examples of Dorothea, Evadne, Angelica and Esther, this study emphasizes that there is no innate difference between men and women in terms of mental capacity; however, there are prejudices which the male-dominated society impose on women since patriarchal society does not allow women to have the same education as men. 278

`Postfeminist Sanatta Cinsiyet Statüsü` başlıklı raporda, statü ve cinsiyet kavramlarının birbirleriyle olan ilişkisi ve bu ilişkinin biçimlendirdiği rol kavramının içeriği sorgulanırken, sanatsal platformda gündeme gelen çalışmaların kimlik ve cinsiyet rolleri bağlamında irdelenmesi amaçlanmıştır.Toplumsal sistemde cinsiyet rolleriyle bağlantılı olarak gelişen statü olgusunun yarattığı alçak ve yüksek statü konumlamalarının toplumsal cinsiyet üzerinde önemli bir yere sahip olduğu gözlemlenir. Ancak 19. yüzyılın ortalarından itibaren gündeme gelen feminizm hareketiyle birlikte sorgulanmaya başlayan cinsiyet kavramı, çeşitli aktiviteler ve sanatsal çalışmalarla desteklenerek, kültürel fonda klişeleşmiş cinsiyet rolleri üzerinde yeniden düşünülmesi gerektiğinin mesajını vermiş ve 20. yüzyılın sonlarında yaygınlaşmaya başlayan postmodern kuramların üzerinde durduğu bireyselci bakış açısıyla birlikte sınırları genişletilecek olan cinsiyet rollerinin altyapısını oluşturmuştur.Dolayısıyla, çağlar boyunca kadını erkekten daha alçak bir statüye yerleştiren eril kültür, postmodern sanat anlayışı içerisinde kadın kimliğini yapısöküme uğratarak yeniden sorgulanır. Özellikle postmodern feminizmin üzerinde durduğu psikanalitik teoriler kapsamında, cinsiyet rollerinin çözümlenmesi için gerekli olan kimlik oluşumunun altında yatan nedenler sanatsal çalışmalarla yorumlanarak açıklanmıştır. Böylece, kadının toplumun kendisine atfetmiş olduğu cinsiyet rollerinden arınması, kendi öznel deneyimleri ve benlik farkındalığıyla mümkün olacak ve bu durum toplumda kadın için daha adil bir statü yapılanmasını da beraberinde getirecektir. The report entitled `Gender Status in Postfeminist Art` aims at questioning the relationship between the concepts of status and gender, and the content of the concept of role shaped by this relationship, and analysing the works that have come to the foreground in artistic platforms within the context of identity and gender roles.It is observed that low and high status positionings, which are created by the concept of status that develops in accordance with gender roles in the social system, have great influence on gender. However, the concept of gender, which has started to be questioned owing to the feminist movement that came to the foreground from the mid-19th century onwards, has given the message that it is necessary to reconsider gender roles, which have become clichés in the cultural background, with the support from different activities and artistic works, and constituted the base for gender roles that will be expanded by the individualistic point of view emphasised by postmodern theories that have become widespread in the late 20th century.Hence, the masculine culture that has situated the female to a lower status than the male throughout the ages is questioned through a deconstruction of female identity by a postmodern approach. Within the context of psychoanalytic theories endorsed especially by postmodern feminism, the reasons underlying identity formation that are necessary for the analysis of gender roles are analysed by interpreting them with artistic works. Thus, the female's purification from gender roles attributed to her by society will be possible through her own subjective experience and self-awareness, and this condition will bring about a fairer status to the female in society. 82

Bu tezin amacı, Antik Yunan'da kadının sosyal konumunu inceleyip yorumlamaktır. Bu amaçla tez çalışmasında kadının sosyal statüsü genel hatlarıyla tarih öncesi dönemde, Minos/Miken'de ve asıl konumuz olan Antik dönemde kadının sosyal statüsü ve toplumsal yaşantısının duygusal ve psikolojik boyutlarıyla irdelemektir. To that end, in general terms, social status and communal living of the women examined in the emotional and psychological perspective in the prehistoric age, minos/miken and finally our main objective, ancient greece. Women were restricted into 'oikos' and able to go public on their own only with a slave, and solely at some periods -exclusive to women, setting them at liberty- that they could go public, such as festivals. XVIII. yüzyılda Kıta Avrupa'sında ortaya çıkan ve XIX. yüzyılda hemen her toplumda bilinmeye başlayan feminist akımın Osmanlı düşün dünyasında tanımlanması ve algılanması tartışma yaratmıştır. Ortodoks İslam'ın devlet kurumlarındaki dokunulmazlığı, Orta Asya ve Anadolu'nun otantik esintisi ve Osmanlı toplumunun patriarkal aile yapılanması gibi nedenlerle dönem aydınları arasında feminizmle ilgili bir konsensüs oluşamamıştır. Klasik feminizm, Osmanlı Devleti'nin değerleriyle uyuşmadığı gerekçesiyle reddedilerek, örfi ve şeri yapıyla senkretik olan `Müslüman/Türk/Osmanlı Feminizmi` yaratılmıştır. Osmanlı feminist söylem, II. Meşrutiyet yıllarında kabuk değiştirmiştir. Toplumun kaybedenlerinden olan kadınlar, sistemin devamını arz eden `Müslüman Feminizmi` yerine, formal ve informal hayatta toplumsal cinsiyet kalıplarını yok etmeye çalışan ve kadın özgürlüğünün garantörü olan bir feminizm rotası çizmişlerdir. I. Feminist Dalga olarak nitelendirilen bu süreçte, Osmanlı kadını ilk defa ev dışına çıkarak bütçeye katkıda bulunmuş; dernek kurarak, dergi çıkararak siyaset tartışmaya başlamış; hukukta, ekonomide, eğitimde erkeklerle `eşit olma` hakkı istemiştir. XX. yüzyılın ulus-devlet modelinde ise kadın ile bütünleşen `vatanına vatansever evlatlar yetiştiren milliyetçi anne` profili, Cumhuriyet Türkiyesi'nin kadın kimliğinin belirleyicisi olmuştur. Yaratılan bu yeni kadın; modern giyimli, eğitimli, siyaset yapan, kamuda görünürlüğü kabul edilen ve ulus-toplum projesinin modernlik simgesi haline gelen `Cumhuriyet Kadını` olmuştur. Cumhuriyet kadını, meşum imajından sıyrılıp, kız kardeş sıfatını edinmişse de resmi ve gayr-i resmi hayatı retrospektif biçimde kurgulanmıştır. Bu çalışma, Türkiye'de kadın hakları ve hukukunun Cumhuriyet Dönemi'nde başladığını iddia eden söyleme, dönem kaynaklarıyla cevap vermeyi hedeflemiş ve Türkiye kadınının hak arama mücadelesinin kökenlerini XIX. yüzyıldaki kanıtlarla ortaya koymaya çalışmıştır. The definition and perception of the feminist movement which came out in Europe in the 18th century and started to known in almost every society during the 19th century, in the world of Ottoman thought created controversy. Because of reasons such as the immunity of the state institutions of Orthodox Islam, the authentic wind of Central Asia and Anatolia, and the patriarchal family structure of the Ottoman society there was no consensus about feminism among the intellectuals of the period. Classical feminism was rejected on the grounds that did not match the values of the Ottoman state, so `Muslim/Turkish/Ottoman Feminism` which was syncretic with customary and religious structure was created. Ottoman feminist discourse changed the crust during the II. Constitutional period. Among the loosers of the society women drew a feminism route which tried to destroy the sexuality forms in formal and informal life, and was guarantor for freedom of women instead of `Muslim Feminism` which was the continuation of the system. In this process, described as I. Feminist Wave, the Ottoman woman firstly went out of the house and contributed to the budget, started to discuss by setting up an association, publishing a magazine, demanded the `equality` with men in law, in economy and in education. In the natonal-state model of the 20th century, the profile of `the nationalist mother who develope patriotic sons to her homeland` integrated with women, became the determinant of the women identity of Republican Turkey. This new women created, became a `Republican Women` who was modern-dressed, educated, politicized, proved her publicity in the public and become a symbol of modernity in the project of nation-society. Although the republican woman escaped from her omnious image and acquired her sisterhood position, her formal and informal life was edited retrospectively. This study has aimed at responding to the discourse which claimed that women's rights and law in Turkey started at Republican Period, by the sources of the period, and it has tried to put forward the origins of the fight of Turkish women for seeking rights with the proofs of 19th century. The study which aimed to put forward the continuity and breaks between two periods, has tried to determine the changes in the status of woman with the laws and practices from the Constitutional Period of Ottoman (1876) to the Early Republican Period (1935). At the time of the research, how women's status changes in politics, law, economics and socio-cultural fields has been examined within the framework of the basic problem of research. During the examination, not distinguishing woman's national or religious identity, the status of non-Muslim woman has been evaluated together with the status of Muslim woman. 285

Bizans yazılı kayıtları, kadının şeytanın aracısı ve görüldüğü zaman kaçılması gereken bir tür olduğunu belirtmektedir. Bu nedenle kadınlar her zaman sosyal yaşamda kısıtlanmalı ve kontrol altında tutulmalıdır. Bizans'ta nüfusun neredeyse yarısını oluşturan ve tamamını doğuran kadınlar, yazılı kayıtların belirttiği gibi sosyal yaşamdan dışlanmışlar mıydı? Sadece yazılı kaynakların ışığında bu soruya yanıt vermek çok zordur. Zira, yazılı kayıtlar genellikle gerçek yerine olması gerekeni sunarlar. Bu bağlamda, ideolojiden ziyade gerçeği belirlemek ve gerçeğe ulaşmak için arkeoloji ve sanat tarihinin sağladığı kanıtlara yüzümüzü çevirmemiz gerekmektedir. Bu nedenle tezimizde kadının Bizans sosyal yaşamındaki yerini ve sanata katılımlarını yazılı kayıtların yanında ve özellikle de görsel kayıtların bize sunduğu ayrıntılar ile değerlendirmek amaçlanmıştır. Bu bağlamda, Bizanslı kadınların imgesel olarak üç kategoriye ayrıldığı ve her kategorideki imgeye de farklı anlamlar yüklendiği görülmüştür. İdeolojinin belirlediğinin ötesinde sosyal yaşama katıldığını destekleyen Bizanslı halk kadını, politik güç yaratmak ve hafızalarda yer edinilmesini sağlamayı amaçlayan imparatoriçe ve klasik dünyanın (Ana) Tanrıça geleneğinin devamını sağlayan kutsal kadın imgeleri, sivil ve dini sanat eserleri üzerinden incelenmiştir. İmparatorluğun tüm tarihi boyunca imparatoriçelerin imparatorların yanında veya tek olarak imparatorluğu temsil eden görsel kayıtları, Hıristiyanlığın yayılışında dişi figür olarak Meryem'in görsel sanatta kendine Tanrı Anası, diğer kutsal kadınların da azize olarak yer bulması, ideoloji ne kadar inkar etse de Bizans İmparatorluğu'nun dişi figürlere verdiği önemi ve ihtiyacı göstermektedir. Yazılı ve görsel kayıtlar, Havva'nın kızı olarak yaftaladığı Bizans kadınlarının güçlerini kontrol altında tutmaya çalışan ataerkil yapının da pek başarılı olamadığını ve nüfusun yarısını oluşturan ve tamamını doğuran dişi figürlerin toplumun kıyısında değil tam da merkezinde bulunduklarını kanıtlamaktadır. Byzantine's written records state that woman is the mediator of devil and is a kind which should be avoided when seen. Therefore, women should always be restricted and kept under control in social life. Were women, comprising almost half of the population and breeding all of it in Byzantine, excluded from social life just as stated in written records? It is difficult to answer this question only in the light of written resources as they generally represent what is needed instead of reality. In this context, we need to consult to records provided by archeology and history of art rather than ideology in order to determine and reach the reality. Therefore, in this thesis it is aimed to evaluate the place of women in Byzantine social life and their contribution to art especially by means of details that visual resources provide us as well as the written records.Within this context, it is observed that Byzantine women are divided into three categories fictitiously and each image is attributed a different meaning. Beyond what the ideology determines, Byzantine folk woman supporting that she had joined in social life, the empress aiming to create political power and have a place in the minds, and sacred woman images providing continuance for (Mother) Goddess tradition of classic world have been examined through civil and religious artworks.Throughout the history of empire that empresses being beside the emperors in visual records or their visual records of representing the empire alone, as a female figure Mary's taking place in visual art as the Mother of God during the spread of Christianity indicate the need and importance which Byzantine Empire gave to the female figures no matter how much ideology denies it. Written and visual records prove that patriarchal structure trying to control Byzantine women's power labeled as daughters of Eve didn't succeed much, and female figures comprising half of the population and breeding all of it are just in the center of society not on the edge. 491

Bu çalışmada 1997 yılında Türkiye'de gerçekleştirilen Zorunlu Eğitim Reformu'nun kadının ailedeki statüsüne olan etkilerini inceledik. Reformla zorunlu eğitimin süresi 5 yıldan 8 yıla çıkarıldı. 1987 ve sonrasında doğan bireyler politikadan etkilenirken önceki kuşaklar 5 yıl sonunda okulu bırakma hakkına sahipti. Bu çerçeve Regression Discontinuity (RD) Tasarımı kullanmak ve politikanın kadınların aile içinde güçlendirilmesi ve statüsü ile ilgili nedensel etkilerini incelemek açısından uygundur. TNSA 2013 verilerini kullanarak önce politikanın kadınların eğitimleri üzerinde artışa yol açan anlamlı etkilerini gösterdik. Sonra politikanın bazı durumlar için kadınların cinsiyet eşitliğine dair yaklaşımlarını güçlendirdiğini ve ideal evlenme yaşını artırdığını gördük. Politikanın, kadınların küçük çocukları olduğunda çalışmayı savunmalarına yol açtığını güçlü delillerle ortaya koyduk. Ayrıca, politikanın kadınların eşleri/partnerleri tarafından para ile ilgili kontrol edici davranışa maruz kalma sıklığını azalttığını ve harcayacak paraları olma durumunu arttırdığını gösterdik. Fakat politikanın kadınların mal sahibi olması ve hane içindeki iş bölümü üzerindeki etkilerine rastlayamadık. Genel olarak, sonuçlar kadının aile içindeki statüsünün önemli değişimlere uğramadığına işaret etse de politikanın kadınların maddi özgürlüklerini ve bu konudaki bilinçlerini arttığından söz edilebilir. In this study we investigate the impacts of 1997 Compulsory Education Reform in Turkey on women's status in the family. With the reform, the duration of compulsory schooling was extended to 8 years from 5 years. Individuals born in 1987 and after were affected by the policy while previous birth cohorts were not. This setting is suitable to implement a Regression Discontinuity (RD) Design and we can infer the causal effects of the policy on women's empowerment and status in the family. Employing data from TDHS 2013, we first document a significant increase in the mean years of schooling of women. Then, we show that the policy leads women to change their views on certain gender roles and increase their ideal age of marriage. There is a strong evidence that policy leads women to support working when they have little children. Moreover, policy decreases the frequency of controlling actions faced by women about money and increases the rate of women who have money to spend. However, there is no evidence of policy effect on asset holdings and share of household responsibilities. Although the results do not indicate substantial changes in women's status in the family, they suggest that the policy leads women to improve their financial independence and awareness of the benefits of paid work. 86

Nijeryalı kadın yazar Buchi Emecheta ve erkek yazar Chinua Achebe, ataerkil düzen tarafından özellikle sömürgecilik döneminde baskı altına alınmış Afrikalı kadınlara ses kazandırmak, toplum içindeki rollerini ve statülerini yeniden tanımlamak ve betimlemek amacıyla, eserlerinde güçlü kadın başkarakterlere yer vermektedirler. The aim of this thesis is to analyse the changing representation of African women -specifically Igbo women- in postcolonial Nigeria through an in depth reading of Buchi Emecheta's Second Class Citizen (1974) and Chinua Achebe's Things Fall Apart (1958) and Anthills of the Savannah (1987), since these novels employ female protagonists and significant female characters who represent new African women with higher education in order to fulfil their ideals and ambitions and assert themselves as individuals in terms of protagonists' questioning and opposing the patriarchal structures and limitations which restrict their lives socio-economically and socio-culturally. 118
