Across four studies (N = 1544), we examined the relationship between individuals gender role mindsets, or beliefs about the malleability versus fixedness of traditional gender roles, and work-family conflict. We found that undergraduate women (but not men) business students holding a fixed, compared to growth, gender role mindset anticipated more work-family conflict. Next, we manipulated gender role mindset and demonstrated a causal link between womens growth mindsets (relative to fixed mindsets and control conditions) and reduced work-family conflict. We showed mechanistically that growth gender role mindsets unburden women from prescriptive gender roles, reducing work-family conflict. Finally, during COVID-19, we demonstrated a similar pattern among working women in high-achieving dual-career couples. We found an indirect effect of womens gender role mindset on job and relationship satisfaction, mediated through work-family conflict. Our preregistered studies suggest that holding the belief that gender roles can change mitigates womens work-family conflict.

Background: Musculoskeletal disorders are among the most common occupational injuries and disabilities in developing and industrialized countries. This study aims to determine the effectiveness of e-mail training to improve the physical posture of female computer users at Birjand University of Medical Sciences in Iran. Methods: The present interventional research explores the effect of email-based training to correct the body posture of female computer users in Birjand, Iran. In this quasi-experiment, 120 women who worked in Birjand University of Medical Sciences using computers were selected through a census. 60 computer users were selected from the deputy of education and 60 from the deputy of development for the intervention group (IG) and control group (CG), respectively. A training program was developed on the ergonomics of office work (12 emails at an interval of 6 weeks). The data was collected using demographic, occupational information, and a knowledge assessment questionnaire. Nordic Musculoskeletal Questionnaire (NMQ) and Rapid Office Strain Assessment (ROSA) were used in both groups before the intervention and 6 months later. Results: After the educational intervention, a significant increase was observed in the ergonomics knowledge of the IG compared to the control. The ROSA score was lowered from a high-risk to a low-and medium-risk level (p < 0.05). In the IG, 44 subjects (73.30%) who needed ergonomic intervention (a score above 5) were reduced to 10 subjects (16.70%) with a need for ergonomic intervention. According to NMQ, the highest frequency of pain in the IG and CG was related to the back (56.70% and 55%, respectively). The neck, shoulders, wrists, back and elbows were next. Conclusions: This quasi-intervention study was conducted to determine the effect of email-based training on correcting female computer users' body posture in 2022. Training ergonomics through email is a practical and acceptable way to improve ergonomic behaviors among computer users. It enables them to adapt to the workplace by applying the correct ergonomics, changing their work behavior to prevent occupational musculoskeletal disorders, and reduce risks and complications. Many students are now working while studying at universities. Research on working students has focused mostly on traditional full-time undergraduates who take part-time work. This study investigates the experiences of mature employed postgraduate students, in particular, the combined demands of work and study and their associations with learning and wellbeing. We collected 257 responses to an online survey across three years from two New Zealand universities. Informed by job demands-resources (JD-R) theory, we used regression-based analysis to identify the interplay between perceptions of demands, learning behaviour and mental wellbeing and qualitative analysis to explore what the students consider university educators should do to improve their wellbeing. Regression-based analyses confirmed that: (1) higher perceptions of situational demands were associated with poorer wellbeing; (2) learning behaviour was associated with favourable wellbeing, and; (3) learning behaviour moderated the negative association between situational demands and wellbeing. Qualitative analysis identified student perspectives on having study cater to work-related demands and enable effective learning behaviour. Our work extends JD-R theory to higher education, and demonstrates the interplay between situational demands, learning and wellbeing among mature employed students. University educators who wish to facilitate student wellbeing should consider reducing peripheral demands and enhancing learning-related resources. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Background: Hearing loss is a highly prevalent condition in the world population that determines emotional, social, and economic costs. In recent years, it has been definitely recognized that the lack of physiological binaural hearing causes alterations in the localization of sounds and reduced speech recognition in noise and reverberation. This study aims to explore the psycho-social profile of adult workers affected by single-sided deafness (SSD), without other major medical conditions and otological symptoms, through comparison to subjects with normal hearing. Methods: This is a cross-sectional, case-control study. Subjects aged between 24 and 65 years, all currently employed and affected by SSD, were enrolled. They were administered both disease-specific and psychometric tests, such as the Hearing Handicap Inventory for Adults (HHIA), the Profile Questionnaire for Rating Communicative Performance, the Psychological General Well-Being Index (PGWBI), and the Social Functioning Questionnaire (SFQ). Results: A total of 149 subjects (mean age = 49.9; SD ± 8.5) were enrolled in the period 2021–2023; 68 were males (45.6%), and 81 were females (54.4%). The normal hearing group was composed of 95 subjects, and the SSD sample was composed of 54 subjects. The results of our study show that the levels of psychological well-being and social functioning in subjects with SSD are statistically worse than in the group of subjects with normal hearing in most subscales. Conclusions: This study definitely outlined evidence for a significantly worse psychological health status and a poorer social attitude of working adults affected by SSD with respect to their normal-hearing counterparts. Understanding the impact of SSD on patients’ work environment suggests a multidisciplinary approach to such patients in order to increase their quality of life through adequate counseling, acceptance, and role modeling.

During the COVID-19 pandemic, the need for computer-users to work-from-home (WFH) has increased world-wide. This study aims to explore how the COVID-19 lockdown has affected pain in the lower-back of adult computer professionals. Individuals aged 20–55, both male and female, meeting inclusion criteria (computer/laptop WFH, worked more than an hour on a computer/laptop) were invited to participate voluntarily after providing informed consent. A Google Forms survey was distributed, including self-reported demographic questions, work hours on a computer/laptop during-lockdown, and Oswestry-Low-Back-Disability-Questionnaire (OLBDQ) to assess low-back-pain (LBP) pre- and during-lockdown. The mean OLBDQ score, pre-lockdown 3.681 with 95% confidence interval (CI) [2.621, 4.741] and during-lockdown 4.893 with 95% CI [3.317, 6.470]. A relevant difference was identified among the working hours' scores from the pre-lockdown and during-lockdown of the OLBDQ for low back pain. The obtained p-value in this context is 0.005, signifying that the observed negative difference is statistically significant for the study. WFH increases LBP of working females and males during the COVID-19 lockdown, poor ergonomics at home is one possible source. Therefore, it is essential to enhance awareness among employed individuals regarding proper ergonomic practices when using a computer both at home and in the workplace. Implication for rehabilitation: Working from home has been associated with increased low back pain in both male and female employees during the COVID-19 lockdown, with poor ergonomics at home being a potential contributing factor. This highlights the importance of raising awareness among working individuals about adopting proper ergonomic practices while using computers, both at home and work, to prevent musculoskeletal issues and promote spinal health. Promoting ergonomics can mitigate musculoskeletal issues, reducing absenteeism and enhancing productivity and efficiency amid prolonged remote work. Although breastfeeding has various benefits for mothers and children, there are several barriers to continuing breastfeeding practices. However, little is known about the relationship between breastfeeding in Japan and maternal socioeconomic circumstances. Based on data from the Japan Environment and Children's Study (n = 75,742), we evaluated maternal socioeconomic factors associated with breastfeeding 1 year after giving birth. Socioeconomic status (education, employment status, and household income), working hours, and breastfeeding were assessed using a self-administered questionnaire. After descriptive analysis, a logistic regression analysis was conducted with adjustments for age, educational level, employment status, and household income. Mothers with higher education and full-time homemakers were more likely to breastfeed one-year-old children. Mothers working long hours (both part-time and full-time) were less likely to breastfeed their one-year-old children. To improve breastfeeding among working mothers, it may be helpful to promote awareness of breastfeeding for every mother as well as to make the workplace environment conducive for working mothers to breastfeed. Rising tuition rates across colleges and universities contribute to the mounting financial strain on students. In response to rising costs, literature details that students seek to bolster their financial security by working additional hours per week, consequently leading to less available time. Previous studies have focused on the negative associations with GPA but not with in-class points. We observed this relationship within a 77-student 200-level genetics course and associated lab. Students working 20+ hours per week (59.7% of students) fared significantly worse on exams. These students scored significantly fewer total class points (p = 0.0089), exam points (p = 0.0255, p = 0.0028, p = 0.0311), and were more likely to incur a failed assignment sooner during the class than their counterparts (p = 0.0025). We observed these trends again in a 34-student 400-level immunology validation cohort (p = 0.0032). These findings represent the first quantitative analysis of employment vs. numerical biology exam and course scores. They are an important step toward identifying and treating the underlying factors associated with reduced STEM performance, retention, and well-being, and represent a forewarning of an approaching higher education crisis as institutions seek to retain and support underrepresented students. Tattoos in the professional world have long been stigmatized despite growing societal acceptance and an increase in tattooed individuals. Research on the challenges faced by tattooed professionals during the job application process remains limited. Using a phenomenological approach and purposive sampling, this study explores the lived experiences of tattooed professionals and their encounters with workplace stigma. Interviews with 8 participants revealed that many chose to cover their tattoos during job interviews to avoid bias, reflecting the conservative nature of the white-collar industry. While overt discrimination was not reported, participants felt compelled to conform to industry standards, hoping for eventual acceptance. The employer responses varied, some indicating no discrimination based on company policies, others noted that client perceptions and industry norms still influence hiring practices. The study concludes that the impact of visible tattoos on professional experiences has a complex interplay between personal identity, societal norms, and workplace environments. As industries evolve, there is hope that greater understanding and adaptability will pave the way for more inclusive practices that reflect the diverse expressions of today's workforce. This study contributes valuable insights into the dynamics of tattoo acceptance in the workplace and calls for further research and advocacy to promote inclusivity and diversity. It has been 50 years since the publication of Studs Terkel's groundbreaking book, Working, which consists of a compilation of interviews carried out with over 130 workers in the United States. In this chapter, the author revisits this masterpiece, which offers a penetrating analysis of the dehumanization and degradation of work. The author argues that Working is an ode to, and guide for, ethnographic scholarship on work and that it remains as powerful and relevant today as when it was originally published a half of a century ago. Introduction: Undergraduate nursing students often work part-time or even full-time while studying at university completing their bachelor's degrees. The aim of this study is to explain the meaning of the lived experiences of nursing students working as students in clinical field. Methods: A phenomenological study was conducted at the nursing and midwifery school of Tabriz, Iran. Purposefully, 20 baccalaureate nursing students with experience working as student worker nurses were recruited. The sample size was determined according to data saturation. Semi-structured, face-to-face interviews were held with the participants over 3 months (April 2020 to June 2020), and Van Manen's hermeneutic phenomenological approach was used to analyze the data. Results: Five main themes extracted from the data analysis, including "students' clinical competency", "nurse-student relationships", "shift work", "mislearning", and "chaotic wards". A further 12 sub-themes extracted under the five main themes. Conclusion: The work of nursing students in clinical environments as student worker nurses is a two-dimensional phenomenon with advantages and disadvantages. The benefits are improving the nursing students' clinical and communication skills, increasing their self-confidence, learning and practicing discipline and nursing responsibilities, and the disadvantages are facing reality shock stress, and mislearning. BACKGROUND: Clinical medical staff should be aware of and examine the correlation between breastfeeding and neonatal hospitalization. Additional attention should be paid to work dilemmas experienced by the nursing staff caring for newborns to avoid exposing newborns to hospitalization risk. OBJECTIVE: The present study investigated the working dilemmas by neonatal nurses caring for breastfed newborns and risk of newborn hospitalization. METHODS: This hospital-based study in Taiwan surveyed 84 neonatal nurses using a structured questionnaire entitled "Working Dilemmas in Clinical Care for Breastfed Newborns." RESULTS: Collected data were analyzed statistically (descriptive analysis, chi-square test, and t test) using Statistical Package for the Social Sciences (SPSS) software. Neonatal intensive care unit (NICU) staff noted that breastfed newborns showed a high risk of hospitalization and nursery staff highlighted a lack of manpower and time. NICU staff experienced more working dilemmas (117.460±12.260) than nursery staff (87.410±15.820) when caring for breastfed newborns (t = 1.080, P < 0.001). NICU staff reported a higher risk of hospitalization in breastfed newborns and experienced more working dilemmas caring for these patients compared with nursery staff, who reported a lack of manpower and time. Abstract Background Regularity of menstrual cycles is an important indicator of women’s health and fertility, and female workers are exposed to several factors, such as sleep disorders, stress, and shift work, that affect their menstrual regularity. This makes it necessary to comprehensively identify the determinants of menstrual regularity. Therefore, this study identified the factors affecting menstrual regularity among female workers from physiological, psychological, and situational dimensions based on the theory of unpleasant symptoms. Methods This was a secondary analysis of the 2010–2012 Korea National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey and utilized the data of 2418 female workers. Based on the theory of unpleasant symptoms, physiological factors included age, age at menarche, childbirth experience, body mass index, and sleep duration. Psychological factors included stress level, depressive mood, and suicidal ideation. Situational factors included education level, household income, consumption of alcohol, engagement in smoking, and work schedule. The χ²-test and hierarchical logistic regression analysis were performed, reflecting the complex sample design. Results Age at menarche, childbirth experience, and body mass index among physiological factors and education level and work schedule among situational factors were found to be related to menstrual regularity. A higher risk of menstrual irregularities was found among those who had given birth (versus those who had not), had a high age at menarche (versus those with a low age at menarche), were obese (versus those who had a normal body mass index), had elementary school-level or lesser educational achievements (versus those with college graduate-level or higher educational achievements), and who had a shift work schedule (versus those with a fixed schedule). Conclusions Intervention is needed for female workers who have these risk factors, and special attention must be paid to female workers who have a shift work schedule. Additionally, since body mass index can be controlled, intervention concerning body mass index is necessary to reduce menstrual irregularity.

While there has been considerable philosophical attention given to injustices surrounding work, there has been much less on those injustices that pertain specifically to workers' commutes. In this paper, I argue that commutes are important parts of people's working lives, and thus deserve attention as sites of potentially considerable injustice. I evaluate commutes in terms of their impact on people's work, their rest, the control they exercise over their lives outside of work, and their ability to meet the demands of democratic citizenship. In the second half, I offer some proposals that could reform commuting, while recognizing the ways in which commuting injustice is not incidental to structures of contemporary capitalism, especially with regards to housing, but is rather a structural and constitutive feature. As a result, remedying the injustices of the commute might require a more radical restructuring of current modes of urban development. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Using nationally representative data from the Labor Force Survey for 2021, this study investigates the factors associated with changes in the employment and income of Vietnamese workers aged ≥50 years due to COVID‐19. Employing multinomial logistic regression analysis, the first model investigates changes in employment (i.e., job loss, temporary absence, increased work hours, change in work mode, and no employment change). The second model illustrates changes in income (i.e., lower/higher income and no change). Independent variables include demographic characteristics and employment features (e.g., industry and information technology (IT) use). The findings emphasize that a stable job, such as one that contributes to social insurance or employment with state or private establishments, can reduce the risk of job loss and income reduction. Moreover, older workers with high levels of education and work skills, such as IT use, are associated with an increased probability of remote work, which reduces the risk of job loss during the pandemic. The results imply that formalizing employment and increasing the human capital of older workers are effective approaches for achieving employment and income security, especially in the case of unforeseen circumstances. Technological advancements and the recent pandemic have further influenced workplace dynamics, leading to challenges such as redundant office spaces. Despite the productivity of remote work, office environments foster human connection and collaboration, which are crucial for innovation. Ensuring sustainability in high-rise offices demands adaptation to evolving work trends through future office designs. This study examines the evolution of high-rise offices in Malaysia, exploring factors influencing workplace trends and identifying emerging design concepts. Using qualitative methods, including literature review and case studies in Kuala Lumpur, the findings underscore a transition towards versatile, user-centric environments in Kuala Lumpur's high-rise buildings, driven by the city's ambition as a global financial hub. Holistic approaches addressing social, physical, and economic factors are essential for navigating challenges and opportunities in this evolving landscape. In addition, integrating advanced technologies and communitycentric environments into office design is crucial for creating future-proof workspaces. It is important to explore the ways that the working lives of persons provides meaning in personal, professional, and organizational ways. In this paper, the author utilized the processes of Parse's (2021a) humanbecoming hermeneutic sciencing (discoursing with penetrating engaging, interpreting with quiescent beholding, and understanding with inspiring envisaging) and the leading-following model to further understanding of the meaning of "working" through Stephen Schwarz's Broadway show, Working, the Musical (Browning & Schwartz, 1982/2002). This column article discusses the state of people with disabilities who work in libraries in conjunction with the Covid pandemic, and the return to working on site. Also discussed is how accessibility changed in libraries because of the pandemic and the shut downs that occurred before vaccination. This article asks administrators to consider several issues including the difference between compliance with the Americans with Disabilities Act and accessibility, compassionate care for library employees and patrons, boundary setting, and embracing change. Over the last decades, a gradual increase in prevailing mental disorders in the adult population has been observed all over the world. Global estimates of anxiety, stress, depression, and mood disorders prevalence have also been high. Employed women are susceptible to experiencing some symptoms or mental disorders due to their lifestyle or working conditions. The objective of this study is to find effective interventions based on the workplace to improve the mental health of employed women. This systematic review was conducted by following PRISMA guidelines to report systematic reviews. The papers in Web of Science, Scopus, PubMed, and Google Scholar for English and SID, Magiran, and Irandoc for Persian resources were searched from 2005 to 2023. To include the final study, 15 papers were eligible to be selected. The findings of this study show that giving interventions to improve the mental health of employed women is hopeful and employers may promote their mental health through performing low-cost and effective intervention programs such as setting up supportive training groups’ sessions and group exercises. The outcomes of performing this study may help to increase our knowledge concerning the necessity of giving effective health interventions to women in the workplace and to consider the shortage of giving such interventions. Therefore, giving the interventions is recommended aiming at the health and welfare improvement of employed women.

Due to the large number of unpaid carers in England, there is an extensive body of research which examines the determinants of carers' employment. Despite this, little is known about the relationship between the specific tasks that carers perform and their labour supply. Using data from the Survey of Adult Carers in England, we examine the relationship between carer tasks and carer employment outcomes. We find that carers who perform tasks that are time‐bound have a lower probability of working compared to carers who do not perform these tasks. Similarly, carers who perform shiftable tasks have a higher probability of working compared to carers who do not perform these tasks. If future social policy is to be designed to allow carers to also maintain their employment, then targeting services at the carer tasks which have the largest impact on employment needs to be taken into account. BackgroundIn the United States, mothers' employment status and occupation are related to breastfeeding. However, it is unclear whether not working leads to longer breastfeeding duration even when compared to professional/managerial jobs, which tend to accommodate breastfeeding better than service/manual labor jobs. Furthermore, occupation and breastfeeding are racially patterned, and it is possible that race could moderate the relationships between mother's work and breastfeeding.MethodsUsing data from the Panel Study of Income Dynamics, we modeled breastfeeding duration based on mother's employment/occupation (not working, professional/managerial work, or service/labor work) during the first 6 months postpartum, as well as mother's race (White, Black or other) and other potential confounders. We used zero-inflated negative binomial regression models and tested an interaction between employment/occupation type and race. Predictive margins were used to compare breastfeeding duration among subgroups.ResultsMothers working in service/labor occupations had the shortest breastfeeding duration of the three employment/occupation groups, and there was no significant difference in duration between not working and professional/managerial occupation. White mothers had longer breastfeeding duration than Black mothers on average. When we included an interaction between employment/occupation and race, we found that among White mothers, non-working mothers breastfed the longest, while mothers in service/labor work breastfed for the shortest duration, but among Black mothers, mothers in professional/managerial work breastfed for longer than mothers in the other two work categories.DiscussionRace moderated the relationship between employment status/occupation type and breastfeeding such that, for White mothers, not working was the most advantageous circumstance for breastfeeding, in line with traditional work-family conflict theory. In contrast, for Black mothers, professional/managerial work was the most advantageous circumstance. These findings support the idea of the Market-Family Matrix, which allows that different work scenarios may be more or less advantageous for parenting behaviors like breastfeeding, depending on mothers' circumstances.

Purpose: The aim of the article is to investigate the influence of gender on motivating and demotivating factors in learning and work among representatives of Generation Z. Design/methodology/approach: Based on survey data collected from 245 women and 203 men within the Generation Z group (aged 19-26), the most significant motivating and demotivating factors for learning and work were identified. These factors were subsequently analyzed with respect to gender differences. Findings: The research has shown that gender significantly influences the motivating factors for learning. Substantial and statistically significant differences were observed among 7 out of 13 investigated motivating factors and as many as 16 out of 20 demotivating factors. Women consistently rated the impact strength of all factors on motivation for learning significantly higher. Research limitations/implications: The limitations of the article lie in its focus solely on students from two educational centers in Poland and individuals aged 19-26 years old. Practical and social implications: The results indicate that women are more sensitive to the effects of motivating and demotivating factors for learning. Originality/value: The initial categorization of specific motivators and demotivators into three groups was proposed: the first group concerned benefits, the second comfort, and the third effort. Significant similarities were observed between the motivating and demotivating factors for learning and work among the surveyed Generation Z representatives. The analysis results indicated the need to pay particular attention to demotivating factors for learning, as they hold significantly greater importance than motivating factors. The physical limitations of people with disabilities who work need resilience skills to survive and adapt at work. This study aimed to determine demands, resilience, and social support for disabled persons in the workplace. This study used a qualitative method with a case study approach. The participants were two physically disabled men who worked at the Warehouse division. Data collection was conducted through in-depth interviews. The study results showed that their work demanded a lot of loading of things that needed to be lifted, high stacking, and increased work if colleagues did not enter shifts. The resilience of disabled people in the workplace is emotion regulation, impulse control, empathy, optimism, causal analysis, self-efficacy, reaching out, and adaptability. Participants demonstrated fairly good resilience skills while at work. This is due to internal factors, including disabled people who have accepted their conditions, have a high sense of gratitude, and are hardworking. External factors included being the breadwinner of the family, difficulty in getting a job, the salary, and there is some social support from family, co-workers, superiors, and the company. ObjectiveTo test the hypothesis that life course patterns of employment, marriage, and childrearing influence later-life rate of memory decline among women, we examined the relationship of work-family experiences between ages 16 and 50 years and memory decline after age 55 years among US women.MethodsParticipants were women ages ≥55 years in the Health and Retirement Study. Participants reported employment, marital, and parenthood statuses between ages 16 and 50 years. Sequence analysis was used to group women with similar work-family life histories; we identified 5 profiles characterized by similar timing and transitions of combined work, marital, and parenthood statuses. Memory performance was assessed biennially from 1995 to 2016. We estimated associations between work-family profiles and later-life memory decline with linear mixed-effects models adjusted for practice effects, baseline age, race/ethnicity, birth region, childhood socioeconomic status, and educational attainment.ResultsThere were 6,189 study participants (n = 488 working nonmothers, n = 4,326 working married mothers, n = 530 working single mothers, n = 319 nonworking single mothers, n = 526 nonworking married mothers). Mean baseline age was 57.2 years; average follow-up was 12.3 years. Between ages 55 and 60, memory scores were similar across work-family profiles. After age 60, average rate of memory decline was more than 50% greater among women whose work-family profiles did not include working for pay after childbearing, compared with those who were working mothers.ConclusionsWomen who worked for pay in early adulthood and midlife experienced slower rates of later-life memory decline, regardless of marital and parenthood status, suggesting participation in the paid labor force may protect against later-life memory decline.

Prior to the COVID-19 pandemic, there was concern that virtual or remote multidisciplinary teams (MDT) meetings represented a niche concept that was unlikely to replace traditional face-to-face meetings in the management of cancer. However, the sudden shift to virtual meetings during COVID-19 has been one of the most dramatic changes since the inception of the MDT. This study aims to investigate the effectiveness of virtual skin MDTs since the move to virtual meetings. A cross-sectional survey was sent to all Specialist Skin Cancer MDTs (SSMDTs) and the British Association of Plastic, Reconstructive, and Aesthetic Surgeons Skin Oncology Special Interest and Advisory Group. There were 68 responses (55.3% response rate) from 36 SSMDTs in the UK. Respondents felt communication, chairing, and decision-making were similar in virtual and in-person MDTs, but the team working was worse in virtual meetings. Recruitment, data security, and patient confidentiality were maintained in virtual MDTs. Most preferred a hybrid format for future MDTs, with the option to attend virtually. Recommendations for improvement included better connectivity, IT support, training, and staff integration. The virtual MDT is here to stay. We highlight the strengths and weaknesses of remote virtual skin MDTs. It is key that we look at ways to retain team working to ensure that the collegiate nature of MDT working, and therefore treatment options for patients, are not lost in this transformation in MDT delivery.
