The author argues that, in the early 1920s, many urban White Americans saw in the Arctic an escape from a world of rapidly expanding technology and became captivated by images of Inuit communities. To pass down an antimodernist form of imperialism to children of the period, educators used lead ethnographic "Escimo" figurines, which rendered Inuit communities as relics of the past. Drawing on visual and documentary evidence, she holds that these ethnographic toys functioned as a form of interactive education that taught young American children about the potential possibilities, as well as limits, of Arctic imperialism. She discusses these toy sets as pedagogical tools and how they helped convey ideas about race, authenticity, and citizenship.

This article examines Soviet social, political, and moralizing posters. The textual and visual images of Soviet poster-making with their thematic meanings are explored, and the role of poster creativity in forming the moral and ethical qualities of the younger generation is analyzed. Results suggest that the Soviet poster becomes a means of communication, as with the help of an image and text, it seeks to convey to the reader the main ethical values of Soviet ideology. At the same time, the importance of both verbal and non-verbal images is relevant. The importance of style in creating a visual image is emphasized, and conclusions are drawn about the importance of Soviet culture and its display in the language, poetry, and visual image of posters produced in the Soviet Union.

This article examines attitudes of the Croatian final grade high school students towards the burdensome legacy of the Second World War and Croatian war for independence (1991-1995). Following the theoretical framework of memory studies, and implementing the concept of postmemory, we have developed a structural model connecting ideology and legacy of the wars. In addition, we have further modelled postmemory and its reliance on democratic values, namely political attitudes, trust in state institutions and political knowledge. Individualised predictors offered more nuanced analysis away from the binary understanding of pro-collaborationist and anti-fascist divide, in line with wider European trends and political culture(s).

This study examined the initial efficacy of World Generation (WorldGen), a Tier I social studies instructional approach for emergent bilingual (EB) students and their native English-speaking (non-EB) peers in Grades 6 and 7. WorldGen builds on prior research on instructional practices that have been associated with improved content knowledge and literacy outcomes for EBs in classes of students with varying English proficiency. Using a within-teacher design, middle grades world history teachers' classes were randomly assigned to WorldGen treatment (17) or comparison conditions (16) for three to four approximately two-week units. The student sample included 42% EBs. Students in the treatment condition (n = 373) scored higher, on average, on world history content (Hedges' g = 0.47) and vocabulary knowledge (Hedges' g = 0.41) than students in the comparison condition (n = 343) but no statistically significant findings were yielded regarding disciplinary literacy skills at the end of WorldGen instruction. Of primary interest, the statistically significant main effects indicated that world history content knowledge and vocabulary learning was similar for both current EB and non-EB students in the treatment condition. The findings provide initial support for the use of the WorldGen instructional practices for improving content acquisition and vocabulary in general education social studies classes with students with a range of English proficiency. Furthermore, teachers perceived the WorldGen instructional practices and materials as providing the information and learning experiences necessary to support students in meeting grade-level expectations.

This paper adopts a biopower lens to examine emergency declarations that posit race or racism as problems to be addressed through mathematics education. We argue that attending to "slow emergencies" of racism must avoid sustaining mathematics education as a self-evident cause and cure for societal problems. We analyze how declarations of emergency reanimate racializing hierarchies by reordering spaces, temporalities, and subjectivities. To explore these concerns, we compare three race-explicit emergency declarations in US mathematics education during World War II with recent emergency declarations of pandemic-related learning loss, disengagement, and a racial reckoning. We juxtapose past and present to spotlight what we outline as distinct biopolitical working arrangements. The analysis maps how emergency declarations rearrange hopes, fears, diagnostic techniques, and intervention strategies--sometimes inadvertently reracializing students in attesting to damage or demanding redress. Our purpose is to foster deliberation over paradoxes and possibilities of addressing racialization and racism in mathematics education transnationally.

This Notes in Brief contribution explores instances of Holocaust denial on college campuses and addresses issues of academic freedom for faculty as well as students. The author explores questions regarding how we teach the Holocaust and how to better decrease denial and antisemitism.

This study explored if the Advanced Placement (AP) World History: Modern Reading is effective teacher professional development (PD). The researcher used a mixed methods explanatory sequential design. A survey was completed by 83 AP World History: Modern high school teachers who had attended the AP World History: Modern on-site Reading. The researcher then conducted a focus group discussion with eight participants to study teacher perceptions of the Reading experience. Quantitative and qualitative results were integrated in order to gain a deeper understanding. The researcher found that attending the AP World History: Modern on-site Reading is beneficial teacher professional development. The structure of the in-person Reading allows for collaboration, engages participants and is relevant to the attendees' classroom practice.

This study used a qualitative research methodology. The research objective was to describe the knowledge and development of the Chinese yangqin. discusses the current situation of the yangqin in Chinese music culture from the three aspects of its origin, evolution, and development. Using literature and interview methods, the distribution, name, and form of yangqin in various countries around the world are combs, and the origin theory of yangqin is compiled and supplemented. The area was selected in China. The fieldwork method is mainly used for collecting data, together with the information from the document. The study's result showed that Yangqin has long communicated with Chinese folk art since its introduction into China. It has developed into a unique Chinese national musical instrument through the improvement and innovation of shape, timbre, percussion instruments, and rhythm. Chinese yangqin not only absorbed the essence of Chinese traditional music culture but also drew lessons from western composing techniques and performance techniques of other musical instruments, which provided new ideas for Yangqin's works and was conducive to the development of Yangqin music and the exchange of Chinese and Western cultures.

Increasing diversity and equity in secondary and college music programs is a common thread in the scholarship across disciplines in the field. While crucial work is being done to decolonize curricula broadly, students often express difficulty relating to formal music study and teachers struggle to balance desires to diversify repertoire and incorporate alternative pedagogical strategies with their own training. Narratives of white supremacy and music have intersected for over 400 years, but the effect goes beyond the composers and pieces we choose to program or teach. It influences foundational concepts of theory, tuning, and even what notes are (the major scale). This paper uses historical and pedagogical research methods to examine the connections between narratives of white supremacy and formal music study, and then shows how the practice of reframing these narratives can lead to a reframing of classroom and applied teaching strategies. Specific attention is given to teaching the blues and improvisation, but the concepts can be applied to different teaching situations as well. The goal is to offer suggestions to aid in the process of creating classroom settings that are more accessible and applicable to students and less daunting for educators.

Ernst Papanek (1900-1973) was an Austrian pedagogue who, between 1938 and 1940, was responsible for children's homes in France he directed for the OSE (Oeuvre de secours aux en-fants). In these children's homes at Montmorency, close to Paris, Papanek tried to treat the traumatized children who had lost their homes, their parents, and those who struggled with their own identities that had been called into question by ideological propaganda and personal experiences alike. Papanek decided to give their souls a new home and not only intended to keep them physically alive but also to use a new form of therapy that was supposed to treat the children as a group. In 1940, Papanek had to escape from France, via Spain and Portugal, to the United States, and he tried to rescue the children by bringing them across the Atlantic as well. However, when he advocated for the idea to continue their treatment as a group in a children's home like the ones he had run in France, he met with resistance, as such approaches were uncommon in the United States, where social workers sought to separate the children and have them adopted into different foster families nationwide. This paper describes this transatlantic "struggle of ideas" when it comes to the role of group therapy for traumatized children and the positive impact of such children living collectively in homes.

The international situation of history didactics as an academic discipline is characterized by the fact that many basic disciplinary concepts often differ considerably: The same or similar terms denote different concepts or vice versa comparable concepts not only have various names but also hold different positions in the respective disciplinary framework. The best example of this is history didactics, which is understood as the practical methodology of history teaching in the Anglophone community and an academic subdiscipline of historical science in Germany. This is a considerable obstacle to international research. Since the school subject of World History is taught in many countries, an international comparison of curricula and textbooks deserves great scholarly interest. Therefore, this article tries to deal with the terminological clarification of the concepts of World History, Global History and Big History for the discipline of history didactics. The four most important reasons behind the need for world history teaching are connected to transnational, anti-Eurocentric, decolonisation- and anthropogenic-focused history teaching. The paper discusses different approaches and relationships between world history and national historical viewpoints with the method of curricula comparison. The study programs assigned to national history are usually not explicitly referred to as "national history," but simply as "History." Tacitly equating the respective national history with "history" as such indirectly makes "world history" appear as the history of the "others" rather than as a comprehensive or integrative concept.

This glimpse into sex education in the Los Angeles region illustrates the eugenic ideas about racially "fit" reproduction that emerged in family life curricula during the Second World War. Ideas about eugenic reproduction in public schools responded to broader cultural fears about increasing divorce rates, criminality, immigration, and birthright citizenship. Eugenics in sex and family life education, importantly, portrayed a woman's choice of mate as a civic responsibility, a move that paved the way for future conflicts about teaching gender and sexuality in public school sex education. Amid a half-century-long conflict over abstinence-only versus comprehensive sex education in public schools, topics like genetics and heredity have come to be widely accepted by both sides - recognized as a presumably value-neutral staple of sex education in US public schools. Yet recent innovations in genetic and reproductive technologies, as well as the conflict over trans and queer youth in the United States, challenge the assumption that teaching genetics and heredity in public schools really is "value neutral."

With education research focused heavily on literacy, numeracy and STEM, our understanding of HASS (Humanities and Social Sciences) is comparatively underdeveloped. HASS disciplines, such as Geography, History and Civics, not only contextualise learning in other disciplines, but are vital to ensuring that society is prepared to face complex social, economic and environmental challenges. There is room for improvement in HASS education for students and teachers alike. This paper examines the HASS education experiences, interest and teaching confidence of 80 pre-service teachers from a regional Australian university. Quantitative and qualitative data were collected from a digital survey. Descriptive statistics and thematic analyses were used. Results showed that the pre-service teachers were most interested in Indigenous Culture, Sustainability, Local Community and Global History. Conversely, they were far less interested in Economics and Democracy. Participants' responses were mixed in terms of their previous HASS educational experiences and their confidence to teach HASS concepts.

The Occupation of Japan (1945-1952) sought to democratize the nation's education system; pupil guidance was expected to play a key part of this process. American reformers promoted new guidance practices (e.g., the comprehensive collection of students' personal data, guidance interventions based on the case-study method, an expanded homeroom curriculum) that emphasized the psychological "adjustment" -- translated as "tekio" ([foreign characters omitted]) -- of students to school and society in a new Japan. By tracing the evolution of prewar and postwar Japanese guidance discourse, this study examines how American pupil guidance's emphasis on student "adjustment" interacted with, and transformed, twentieth-century Japanese education. Drawing from prewar, Occupation-era and post-independence sources, the essay explores three points. First, by comparing prewar "life guidance" with Occupation-era and post-independence "pupil guidance," it emphasizes the important changes effected by "tekio"-oriented guidance during the late 1940s. Second, by examining the way these practices related to Occupation's educational democratization, it explores how their psychological approach to democracy defined -- and arguably constrained -- the dynamism of this broader project. Lastly, the work discusses who supported and opposed this new "tekio" discourse. American authorities succeeded in garnering the support of many elites in Japanese education (e.g., Ministry of Education officials, leading academics), but other educators remained skeptical.

In this qualitative multi-case study, we illustrate how three pre-service teachers from varying programs and social positions framed discussions in world history classrooms, and we discuss the broader narratives about the world their discussions communicated. Using critical theories of global citizenship education (GCE) and the Dynamic Systems Model of Role Identity (DSMRI), three primary data sources inform our analysis: observations of participants' discussions, decision memos written while reflecting on their discussion facilitation, and semi-structured interviews. The three participants prioritized making discussion content relevant to their students. However, their facilitation practice ultimately contradicted such aims by favoring dominant and distancing global narratives, though this tendency went unacknowledged in interviews and while writing reflective memos. Our DSMRI cross-case analysis reveals how candidates' role identities manifested in classroom discourse, with ontological and epistemological beliefs reliant on dominant global narratives. Despite varied personal experiences offering potential strengths for critical GCE teaching, participants' self-perceived limited world history content knowledge appeared to condition their distanced and power-neutral facilitation approaches. By unconsciously relying on dominant narratives, teachers' discussion facilitation positioned global issues firmly in the past and distant from students' lived experiences and agency.

The later part of the nineteenth century through the early twentieth century has many monikers in U.S. history textbooks, such as the "Gilded Age," the "Progressive Era," and the "Second Industrial Age." What it is rarely called, but should be known as, is the "Nadir of Race Relations." One topic in this time period that is underexplored in middle-school social studies classrooms is the Harlem Hellfighters--African Americans that, despite their treatment on the home front, volunteered to fight in Europe during World War I. In the project discussed in this article, sixth-grade students in an urban middle school located in a medium-size Southern city used visual primary sources and the trade book "The Harlem Hellfighters: When Pride Met Courage" by Walter Dean Myers and Bill Miles to explore the history of this fighting unit. This article starts by providing a historical overview of the Harlem Hellfighters, followed by an overview of best teaching practices with analyzing visual primary sources. Next, the authors provide demographic information about the participating students and teacher, the steps of the project, and data analysis techniques. The authors then discuss the themes that emerged from analyzing student paintings and written work. Finally, a discussion of the findings and future research is provided.

This paper explores the British art patronage scheme "Pictures for Schools," which sold affordable works of art to educational buyers at annual exhibitions between 1947 and 1969, focusing on the work of "Pictures for Schools" founder and organiser Nan Youngman (1906-1995) as an artist, educationalist and activist. It shows that, while social and cultural changes in post-war Britain around the development of the welfare state provided a receptive environment for "Pictures for Schools," it was largely driven by Youngman's personal convictions and experiences. This paper traces the ideological motivations behind "Pictures for Schools" to the interwar period, exploring Youngman's involvement in two progressive organisations, the Artists' International Association (AIA) and the Society for Education through Art (SEA), which enabled her to campaign for progressive art and education. In doing so, it positions "Pictures for Schools" as a socially engaged intervention into the post-war education system in England and society.

Elite schools in the UK are bound to the history of British colonialism. This paper examines the material ties between these schools and the transatlantic slave trade. We combine multiple sources to examine which schools and their alumni accrued substantial economic capital derived from the enslavement of Black people. We find two principal connections: first, in donations and foundations of schools from those who made their fortune in the slave trade; and second, through income of boys attending these schools. Drawing on the Legacies of British Slavery dataset, we show that schools with alumni benefitting from the slave trade include the most prestigious British private schools. Moreover, this paper traces the histories of several secondary schools founded by, or in receipt of, substantial donations from slave-owning families. We argue that extractive, violent forms of colonial capital accumulation have been central to, the formation and maintenance of these elite educational institutions.

This article explores how recent curricular reform in Australia has been responsive to a culture of redress. It argues that taken together, the 2008 National Apology to the Stolen Generations and the 2010 national curriculum reform marked a turning point, whereby settler colonial injustices have since been systematically included in the curriculum. This is explored through a case study analysis of the two iterations of the "Victorian Curriculum: History" post-Apology--2012 and 2016--the latter of which remains in current use. Using discourse analysis methods, this article argues that the inclusion of colonial injustice in the post-Apology era signals a consensus that has emerged around the significance of representing injustice in history curriculum, and by extension, for shaping future citizens. Through close textual analysis of the curriculum documents, this article finds that representations of historical injustice have been organized by four frames: memorialization, equivalence, personalization, and human rights. It argues that these frames curtail opportunities for the development of an understanding of the structural character and effects of settler colonialism, and limit consideration of the longer history of Indigenous sovereignty and self-determination. These failures raise questions about how impending reforms might respond to the contemporary political context where treaty negotiations and formal truth-telling with First Nations' polities are unfolding.

In today's rapidly evolving global economy, it is essential to equip young learners with the necessary skills and knowledge to thrive in the workforce and contribute to economic development. Education is a vital driver of human capital and development in countries, and the effectiveness of any educational system depends heavily on its curriculum. This article studies the pivotal role of the curriculum in shaping education and its contribution to economic development. We examined four components (objectives, content, teaching-learning methods, and evaluation) of secondary school curricula in G7 countries (Canada, France, Germany, Italy, Japan, UK, USA) and Iran to present a set of proposed concepts for the Iranian curriculum with a focus on economic features. A comparative strategy with four qualitative stages (description, interpretation, juxtaposition, comparison) was used. The proposed concepts are arranged in three layers: the first includes improvement of scientific skills; technical skills; and process skills. The second includes study of world history and geography, and other countries' languages and cultures. The third includes altruism for others, and health and environment. Our study serves as an introduction to the skills and abilities needed by Iranian students to compete in the real world. It also provides a concise outline of some of the essential competencies for tomorrow's society and workplaces.

Children's literature can serve as mirrors, windows, and sliding glass doors. They are mirrors for marginalized groups to see themselves represented, windows for dominant cultures to learn about marginalized groups, and sliding glass doors to develop empathy. In this study, I examined Middle East Picture Book Award to address what books are available about Middle Eastern Muslims who experience xenophobia and Islamophobia; and identify the books that serve as mirrors-windows-sliding glass doors.

Amsterdam's National Holocaust Museum is due to open in March 2024. It is the first and only museum to tell the story of the attempt by the Nazis to eradicate Jews from the Netherlands, a history of segregation, persecution, and murder. Yet the story is also one of rescue, survival, and solidarity. One of the museum's main goals is to engage visitors by involving them in a learning experience, in particular, to encourage young people to study and to develop the skills they need to be able to understand the past, to see how this impacts the present, and to recognize and challenge discrimination and antisemitism today. This article begins by sketching the presentation in the new museum and examines how the museum's educational facilities (presentation and programs) encourage audiences to think about what they can do to combat discrimination in general, and antisemitism in particular.

One of the Editors' 2022 "Challenges to the Field" was: "What is the story this government wants us to tell our children?" "What is education for?" Continuing this conversation leads to a related question: What can be learnt from reviewing the history of schooling in Australia in this light? I argue here that the nation's founding discourse of White Australia produced a purposeful project of schooling and teacher education designed to 'keep rural Australia white'. This also led to the disassociation of rural education and Aboriginal education that remains problematic for rural schools today. As a form of truth-telling from a non-Indigenous perspective, I offer a basis for reflection on the extent to which 21st Century educational practices continue to (re)produce this discourse. Understanding the past -- about how the newly federated Australian states century set out to educate their future citizens -- is crucial for teacher education aiming for social and environmental justice and change. An anti-colonialist reading of this history of colonial settler schooling might help us understand why the discourse of White Australia (and the systematic regimes of 'truth' about our country, its original inhabitants, and its waves of new settler-citizens) has remained so powerful over time.

This paper presents and analyzes a case study of a five-week study abroad course called "Inequality in Brazil: An exploration of race, class, gender, sexuality, and geography." The course was constructed to teach social inequality in the context of Brazil by using place-based and experiential learning within the framework of critical pedagogy (Freire, 1989). By examining inequality through the lens of culture and geography, students were empowered to become "student-teachers" in their explorations of race, class, gender, and sexuality as they linked theory to practice and lived experience. This paper provides an example of how study abroad can be used to teach about issues of inequality by partnering with community members to build learning environments where students and community members can all benefit.

In 2015, the Truth and Reconciliation Commission (TRC) of Canada released a Final Report containing 94 Calls to Action. Included were calls for reform in how history is taught in Canadian schools, so that students may learn to address such difficult topics in Canadian history as Indian Residential Schools, racism and cultural genocide. Operating somewhat in parallel to these reforms, social studies curricula across Canada have undergone substantial revisions. As a result, historical thinking is now firmly embedded within the curricula of most provinces and territories. Coupled with these developments are various academic debates regarding public pedagogy, difficult knowledge and student beliefs about Canada's colonial past. Such debates require that researchers develop a better understanding of how knowledge related to Truth and Reconciliation is currently presented within Canadian classrooms, and how this may (or may not) relate to historical thinking. In this paper, I explore this debate as it relates to Indian Residential Schools. I then analyse a selection of classroom resources currently available in Canada for teaching about Truth and Reconciliation. In so doing, I consider how these relate to Peter Seixas's six concepts of historical thinking (Seixas and Morton, 2013), as well as broader discussions within Canada about Indigenous world views, historical empathy and Reconciliation.

In Turkey, the Republican Era, which started in 1923, is a period in which state institutions were rapidly restructured and these institutions were reconstituted within the framework of the ideology of the newly established state. Education has taken its share in this reconstruction process as well. One of the important regulations in the field of education was the 1924 curriculum. The 1924 curriculum was quite important in terms of reflecting the Republic's perspective on education and the importance it attaches to education. Through this curriculum, it was aimed to raise patriotic individuals who are loyal to the philosophy and values of the Republic, have national consciousness, and understand the new state, institutions and organizations. The aim of the research is to examine the first citizenship education course of the Republic of Turkey, "Musâhabât-i Ahlâkiyye & Malumât-i Vataniye" [Conversations on Morality and Civics], which was included in the 1924 educational program. In the study, this curriculum was analyzed by employing the historical research method.

The relevance of the study stems from the role of higher education institutions in shaping the national values among students of pedagogical specialities (educators, future teachers, social workers). The purpose of this study is to investigate the transformation of value orientations of Ukrainian students in the process of developing a democratic society. The study compared data from two age groups (55-60 years old; 18-28 years old). The study used a conversation that involved closed and open-ended questions. The results of the survey were analysed using the cross-sectional method, and directions for further work with the data were drawn up. The anamnesis of the responses is presented in the tables. The empirical study identified the main value orientations among students of pedagogical higher education institutions of the past and present time; investigated the hierarchy of youth values of the 80s, 90s and 2021; compared the transformation processes and formulated the main reasons for their changes in the Soviet period and in the period of independent Ukraine; determined the "brand" phenomenon of modern youth of pedagogical specialties, analysed the way self-development and self-realisation becomes a paramount value of personal orientations among young students. The materials of the study are of practical significance for the process of forming value orientations in higher education institutions. It is necessary to shape system of values among students (future teachers) as they will transmit this knowledge to the younger generation in educational institutions of different levels.

At the dawn of the 21st century--when your author, who is now an educator, was in college--the United States was the sole global superpower. But the world changed with the terrorist attacks of September 11, 2001, as well as other events that remade the world in which current students now study. As an educator, I can explain that the structure of the world, termed "world orders," can subsist of underlying world "sub-orders," and "suborder traits" which even underlie them historically, and how students can outline them. In this way, while political-economic history looks to be constantly repeating itself, with the alignment of "traits" changing, what is considered "modern" and how we go about teaching it in history, political, and economic courses is the research aim of this article. Unlike the historian, whose job it is to identify such "traits," the social scientist should attempt to measure their importance; as educators, we need to point this difference out to students. These new ideas come from an educator with a background in both history and the social sciences. The article summarizes the current world order and concludes with a discussion of what "future" world orders might be, based on sub-orders, while offering ideas for educators to use for students, many of whom will be future scholars, on how to measure which world orders and "sub-orders" are generationally and empirically "modern."

While attempts to decolonise the school curriculum have been ongoing since the 1970s, the recent Black Lives Matter protests around the world have drawn urgent attention to the vast inequities faced by Black and First Nations peoples and people of colour. Decolonising education and other public institutions has become a front-line public concern around the world. In this article, we argue that poetry offers generative possibilities for the decolonisation of Australian high school (and university) curricula. Inspired by Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander approaches to knowledge creation as "intergenerational," "iterative" and "intercultural," and by postcolonial and decolonial theories, we explore ways in which poetry events can begin decolonising and diversifying the school curriculum. We suggest that poetry creates spaces for deep listening with the heart ("dadirri") that can promote truth-telling about colonial histories and the strengths, achievements and contributions of First Nations Australians. These decolonising efforts underpin the "Wandiny" (Gathering Together) -- Listen With the Heart: Uniting Nations Through Poetry research that we discuss in this article. In these ways, we argue that decolonised curricula create the conditions for cognitive justice in schooling that is an important precursor to other forms of social justice, such as equality, diversity and inclusion.

This article addresses the cultural and educational needs of global learners by shedding light on existing literature focused on issues related to globalization and the internationalization of higher education in the United States. International student mobility promotes cultural and economic changes, which are recognized within this article due to intercultural differences and interpersonal interactions within these social spheres. A survey questionnaire was used to gather data concerning the global competencies of faculty (i.e., knowledge of global cultures, entities, organizations, etc.). Forty eight of the 102 faculty members (47%) at a four-year private institution who responded to the survey indicated that they have attended one or more global competency training. Results showed individuals who completed global competency training were consistently more likely to understand world organizations, their own culture, world history, current events, and were more likely to implement globalized classroom strategies than those with limited training. A correlation between global competency training and instructional strategies was conducted at a p level of 0.01. Based on the findings within this study, recommendations for future research concerning the potential relationship between global competency and methods of instruction are discussed. Applicable strategies for promoting inclusion of students of different nationalities, and teaching strategies that promote an inclusive classroom environment are discussed.

While a clear rationale for the need to decolonise school geography curricula has been proposed, there are few examples of what this looks like in practice. Drawing on our professional practice in both a secondary school and a university setting, we outline two case studies of decolonising the curriculum that centre on promoting student agency. The first is a Year 7 geography unit of work, and the second is a walking tour of London for an initial teacher education programme for secondary school geography teachers. Through these case studies, we argue for the importance of encouraging students to think about geographical relations with other places, and build on studies which foreground the importance of place as a pedagogic device through which the aims of decolonisation can be furthered.

While oral history has been demonstrated to hold potential as a more engaging and rigorous alternative to textbook-centered instruction, it has also failed to replace textbooks as the mainstream methodology in high school classrooms. Here, the author presents oral history data from Jim Walch, a WWII, Korean War, and Vietnam War veteran who "retired" as a Red Cross emergency relief worker as well as sample classroom activities derived from that data. The objective is that these sample activities may be received as more approachable than traditional oral history methodology to secondary teachers who are accustomed to textbook-based instruction. It is hoped that these approachable alternatives will encourage secondary teachers to adopt more engaging and rigorous methodologies such as oral history into their curriculum.

The analysis of the current state and development of social tourism in Russia indicates the need for further research into its content and forms, aimed at introducing the historical and cultural values of our citizens, organizing their active and wholesome recreation, solving the problems of patriotic education for the country's younger generation. The paper discusses some issues of social tourism development in Russia, the role of social tourism in the preservation and development of historical and cultural heritage focuses on the need to develop measures to stimulate tourist demand, strengthen the social component of tourism in the country

Autonomous Republics, although situated within the borders of a state, have the right to govern themselves within their own borders. The most concrete indicator of a state's autonomy is its flag, its national language, its national culture and its national education. In this context, the language and education policies come into play in the building of a new political union and a national identity. For example, Gagauzia (or Gagauzia Autonomous Region), which was shaped by many historical periods from the Ottoman Empire (from the 16th century until 1812) to the Russian Empire (1721-1917) and to the Union of Soviet Socialist Republics (1922-1991), is nowadays within the borders of the Republic of Moldova. It is an autonomous republic with the right to self-government. This paper aims to analyze the language and education policies determined and applied for the Gagauz Turks in Moldova. It is possible to argue that there is a relationship between the notions of "autonomous republic" and "language and education policy." In the autonomous republic, this policy will be described as a policy-based not only on the national identity, but also the plurilingualism.

Findings from a historiographic case study are reported. Qualitative data was collected from a series of interviews and cultural artifacts exploring the history of the creation of the Regis Jesuit High School, Girls Division- the first American all girls Catholic Jesuit high school. The study traces the process of how Regis Jesuit became a co-divisional campus educating both women and men in same sex classes utilizing Ignatian Strategic Planning conceptual framework that emphasizes the Jesuit concept of Magis while exploring its impact on the historical and contemporary role that women play in the Jesuit mission.

This study aims to reveal how the Turkish War of Independence was told in the history textbooks in elementary schools to the Republic of Turkey's first generation. The research has been carried out using the historical research method, one of the qualitative research methods. The data of the study have been collected through the primary school history textbooks published between 1924-1928. The data have been obtained through document review. According to the research findings, the subjects of Istanbul's occupation, the occupation of Izmir, the resistance against invasions, the Battles of Inonu, the Eastern Front, the Battle of Sakarya and the Battle of Dumlupinar are included in the textbooks. In contrast, the Battle of Kütahya-Eskisehir is not included. It is understood that since the textbooks were written right after the War of Independence, this directly affected the content and the language used. It is possible to see the enthusiasm, emotion, excitement, and perspective of the Turkish War of Independence in the textbooks. This situation shows that the process and the atmosphere in the country affect the history education. Moreover, it has been observed that the subjects were told in the form of stories, taking into account the students' cognitive levels. It is remarkable how the Republic's fathers told and conveyed the Turkish War of Independence to the Republic's children about the events that took place just recently. In conclusion, this study demonstrates how the present-day Turkish history textbooks have evolved from those entirely subjective textbooks of the early Republic era.

The aim of this study is to investigate the effect of cooperative letter and cooperative poster studies on the academic achievement of social studies teacher candidates in contemporary world history course and the relationship between learning writing and course success. In the research, quantitative model was adopted and quasi-experimental design with pretest-posttest comparison groups was used. The study group of the research consists of 78 social studies teacher candidates studying at Atatürk University in the spring semester of 2019-2020. In the research, academic achievement test, letter and poster evaluation rubrics were used as data collection tools. Independent groups t-test and dependent groups t-test were used in the analyzes. As a result of the research, it was determined that cooperative poster and cooperative letter applications are significantly effective in improving the academic achievement of teacher candidates. It was determined that there are no significant difference between the academic achievements of teacher candidates who do different types of writing, but their letter writing skills are significantly higher than their poster preparation skills.

Although the notion of gender has a biological meaning, the concept of gender refers to a social construction that emerges from a biological basis. This construction includes cultural definitions of masculinity and femininity that are more appropriate for social life. In the definition and distinction of gender roles in social life construction, the discussion of the public and private sphere is seen. Textbooks have an important place as a dominant discourse tool in the public and private sphere debate. Therefore, textbooks in general and history textbooks in particular have an important share in this debate. Textbooks convey stereotypes of gender roles to students and contain descriptions of roles. On the other hand, history textbooks construct and legitimize the historical context along with the definitions of roles. Therefore, history textbooks have an important share in the production of women's gender roles. In this context, it is determined that the purpose of the study is to evaluate the gender roles of women in compulsory or history courses textbooks in the 2019-2020 academic year in Turkey. In the research, document analysis is carried out using a case study, one of the qualitative research designs. 9, 10, 11 and 12th-grade history textbooks and 11th-grade elective History of Turkish Culture and Civilization, 12th grade Turkish Republic History of Revolution and Kemalism and 12th grade elective Contemporary Turkish and World History textbooks were examined. In the study, the discourse repertoires built on women's gender roles were determined using critical discourse analysis. In the textbooks, it has been determined that the gender roles of women are associated with traditional roles such as motherhood, child-rearing, and sewing and embroidery. Besides, although it is argued that women are the subjects of the public sphere in the textbooks, it has been seen that the roles of the private sphere are concretized, clarified, legitimized and reproduced with various examples. As a result, history textbooks have been shaped in a male-dominated structure and the basic discourse produced from this is that women are a part of private life, not the public sphere. To eliminate the disadvantageous situation of women regarding gender roles in history textbooks, guidelines for textbook authors should be prepared in the history course curriculum.

The source base of the study consists of literary works of fiction and publicistic genre, letters of the Republic citizens and subjects of ancient Roman emperors, who bear witness of the attitude of contemporaries to the profession of a teacher, determine its prestige and social significance. This preconditioned the aim of the study to determine the social status of a Roman teacher. The authors claim that the latter depended on both formal and informal factors. However, personal level of professional achievements, attractive individual traits, morality, support from influential people were more important than belonging to a particular class of mentors or state regulation of education. The teacher's authority regulated his right to corporal punishment of students and influenced the amount of remuneration. The researchers believe, that a certain criterion to determine the prestige of the profession is the quantitative indicator of payment, as well as the regularity of its implementation. The teacher's wealth increased his place in the system of social relations and, conversely, was a consequence of patronage by the authorities. However, the incomes of most teachers remained low, which, in combination with other criteria of prestige of the job, allows to conditionally establish the status of a teacher at a level "below average".

In times of crisis it is good to look back. Not only is it comforting, but better understanding of events in our past can inform decision-making and help us find direction at uncertain times. COVID-19 may have presented new challenges, but this exploration of historical disruptions to school exams highlights themes and a recognisable human spirit. For this study Gillian Cooke and Gill Elliott have identified five crisis events in the history of Cambridge Assessment and tracked responses to these circumstances through documents held in the corporate archive. The flu pandemic of 1918, two World Wars, Indian Partition and the Strikes of the 1970s all, in different ways, pushed the boundaries of examination administration. The search yields both short, and long-term responses and reveals just how much the impact of a crisis is connected to the society that deals with it.

The primary purpose of this article is to analyze how the origin of the Cold War is represented in Turkish history textbooks for general secondary school education for the twelfth grade. The author examined three history textbooks, which are only approved by the Ministry of National Education (MoNE) for teaching the course of Contemporary Turkish and World History. This research applied content analysis, including narratives and visual interpretation of the origins of the Cold War, and also the events regarding the emergence of Soviet Bloc and Western Bloc in high school history textbooks in Turkey. Findings indicate that treatments of the origin of the Cold War in Turkish history textbooks are remarkably similar in many ways. The traditional approach of the origin of the Cold War, which depicts the Soviet Union as an aggressive power whose primary purpose was to expand Communism to the world, constitutes the dominant narrative in Turkish history textbooks. The representation of the United States is very positive. All textbooks underline that the United States played a crucial role in solving many problems in many different parts of the world to prevent the expansion of Communism.

This paper looks at the evolution of the girl's school story in "The British Girl's Annual" during the interwar period. The school story played a crucial role instructing young female readers about their gendered role within the school as a kind of microcosm for nation/empire. Most of these lessons focus on loyalty and leadership, topics especially important during a period when British global leadership is in flux. For during this interwar period, many of the dominion--especially Canada--began to push back against the strictures of colonialism and demand political and economic autonomy, demands which eventually culminated in the 1931 Statute of Westminster. Distributed throughout the commonwealth, "The British Girl's Annual" (renamed "The Canadian Girl's Annual" or "The Australasian Girl's Annual" in its respective countries) tracks this shifting political climate in its representation of female leadership and defense of nation in the girl's school story. In particular, the annual's turn to the Guide story (as a subset of the school story), focusing on themes such as robbery and the defense of school-as-nation, charts a sociopolitical turn inward and the eventual collapse of both global empire and "The British Girl's Annual" itself during the final years of this interwar period.

Examining the ethnogenesis system of the Gokturk state, family structure, sports that they formed mainly in war physical education and the involvement of Gokturk women with sports were tried to be determined. The meta-analysis method has been used to achieve this goal. In the early periods of history, the Gokturks gave rights similar to the rights that today's modern law grants to women and children. The family order in Gokturk nation gave each family member some rights and responsibilities while the buying and selling of women and children as goods in other societies, where the father had all kinds of savings on women and children, were common. We can explain the body control and regulation of the Gokturk state as follows: biopolitics for women and men in the archaic period did not differ, even if it differed in the contemporary world. Although the main duty of women is motherhood, they have dealt with all kinds of sports as in the case of the female heroes (inscriptions, epics, rock paintings, kurgans and miniatures). According to the data obtained, social life in the Gokturk state has been constructed in parallel with today's modern concept of gender. Female and male Gokturks were subjected to a physical education that would take part in attack-defense in wartime and in the economy in peacetime (heroism, blacksmithing, mud-brickwork, handicrafts, housework, trade, etc.).
