We report electron diffraction results of xenon clusters formed in superfluid helium droplets, with droplet sizes in the range of 105–106 atoms/droplet and xenon clusters from a few to a few hundred atoms. Under four different experimental conditions, the diffraction profiles can be fitted using four atom pairs of Xe. For the two experiments performed with higher helium contributions, the fittings with one pair of Xe–He and three pairs of Xe–Xe distances are statistically preferred compared with four pairs of Xe–Xe distances, while the other two experiments exhibit the opposite preference. In addition to the shortest pair distances corresponding to the van der Waals distances of Xe–He and Xe–Xe, the longer distances are in the range of the different arrangements of Xe–He–Xe and Xe–He–He–Xe. The number of independent atom pairs is too many for the small xenon clusters and too few for the large clusters. We consider these results evidence of xenon foam structures, with helium atoms stuck between Xe atoms. This possibility is confirmed by helium time-dependent density functional calculations. When the impact parameter of the second xenon atom is a few Angstroms or longer, the second xenon atom fails to penetrate the solvation shell of the first atom, resulting in a dimer with a few He atoms in between the two Xe atoms. In addition, our results for larger droplets point toward a multi-center growth process of dopant atoms or molecules, which is in agreement with previous proposals from theoretical calculations and experimental results. Particle dark matter could belong to a multiplet that includes an electrically charged state. WIMP dark matter (χ0) accompanied by a negatively charged excited state (χ−) with a small mass difference (e.g. < 20 MeV) can form a bound-state with a nucleus such as xenon. This bound-state formation is rare and the released energy is O(1−10) MeV depending on the nucleus, making large liquid scintillator detectors suitable for detection. We searched for bound-state formation events with xenon in two experimental phases of the KamLAND-Zen experiment, a xenon-doped liquid scintillator detector. No statistically significant events were observed. For a benchmark parameter set of WIMP mass mχ0=1 TeV and mass difference Δm=17 MeV, we set the most stringent upper limits on the recombination cross section times velocity 〈σv〉 and the decay-width of χ− to 9.2×10−30 cm3/s and 8.7×10−14 GeV, respectively at 90% confidence level.

The question of what generates conscious experience has mesmerized thinkers since the dawn of humanity, yet its origins remain a mystery. The topic of consciousness has gained traction in recent years, thanks to the development of large language models that now arguably pass the Turing test, an operational test for intelligence. However, intelligence and consciousness are not related in obvious ways, as anyone who suffers from a bad toothache can attest-pain generates intense feelings and absorbs all our conscious awareness, yet nothing particularly intelligent is going on. In the hard sciences, this topic is frequently met with skepticism because, to date, no protocol to measure the content or intensity of conscious experiences in an observer-independent manner has been agreed upon. Here, we present a novel proposal: Conscious experience arises whenever a quantum mechanical superposition forms. Our proposal has several implications: First, it suggests that the structure of the superposition determines the qualia of the experience. Second, quantum entanglement naturally solves the binding problem, ensuring the unity of phenomenal experience. Finally, a moment of agency may coincide with the formation of a superposition state. We outline a research program to experimentally test our conjecture via a sequence of quantum biology experiments. Applying these ideas opens up the possibility of expanding human conscious experience through brain-quantum computer interfaces.

This study investigated the dissociation after the Xe 4d Auger decay of weak-bonding XeF2 molecules by multielectron–ion coincidence spectroscopy using a magnetic bottle electron spectrometer. Fragmentations from the XeF22+ states were clarified in the Auger spectra coincident with individual ion species. It was observed that the two-hole population led by the Auger decay was not directly inherited during the fragmentation of XeF22+. Phenylpropiolic acid (C6H5C≡CCOOH, PPA) isolated in nitrogen and xenon cryogenic matrices was studied by infrared spectroscopy. The experimental studies were complemented by a series of quantum chemical calculations carried out at the density functional theory (B3LYP) and MP2 levels of theory (with different basis sets). The calculations predicted the existence of two planar PPA conformers, differing in the arrangement of the carboxylic group. The higher-energy trans-PPA conformer has a negligible population in the gas phase at room temperature and was prepared in situ in the N2 cryomatrix through vibrationally-induced rotamerization of the lower-energy cis-PPA conformer, achieved using selective narrowband infrared excitation of the OH stretching coordinate of the latter species. Broadband UV (λ > 235 nm) irradiation of matrix-isolated cis-PPA was also undertaken, leading to the observation of cis-PPA → trans-PPA isomerization. No other UV-induced photoreactions were observed. The in situ generated trans-PPA conformer was found to decay back to cis-PPA in the dark by tunneling, and its lifetimes under different experimental conditions were determined. The preservation period afforded by cold storage of cells is short. However, the use of rare gases for cold storage as a means of extending the period of preservation would be highly beneficial.To examine the effect of temperature on the protective effect of cold storage of cells using pressurized dissolution of xenon gas, with particular focus on the inhibition of substance transport by viscosity.Human dermal fibroblast monolayers incubated in a culture dish for 48 h were used as a test sample, with culture medium used as a preservation solution. Samples were placed into a pressure-resistant vessel, which was pressurized with xenon gas at 0 or 0.5 MPa, and cells were stored at 0 to 5 °C for 18 h. Cell activity was evaluated by tetrazolium salt assay. The viscosity of the medium under pressurization at each storage temperature was estimated.The maximum protective effect against cell damage of cold storage with pressurized dissolution of xenon gas was observed at 4 °C. An increase in estimated viscosity by pressurization was correlated with increased cell activity at 4 °C.Analysis of the temperature dependence of the protective effect against cell damage of cold storage with pressurized dissolution of xenon gas revealed that the most effective temperature is 4 °C. Visible‐to‐ultraviolet (UV) upconversion provides a fascinating strategy to achieve deep UV emission through readily accessible visible light. However, the intensity of deep UV emission obtained through visible‐to‐UV upconversion progress is still far from satisfactory, severely constraining its practical applications. Herein, a novel class of praseodymium ion (Pr3+)‐doped rare‐earth oxyhalides (YOCl, YOBr, and LuOBr) to achieve efficient upconverted deep UV emission in the spectral range of 250–350 nm is developed. The upconverted UV emission intensity of LuOBr:Pr3+ is determined to be 56.7 times stronger than that of the well‐established Lu7O6F9:Pr3+. When employed as a photon‐converter to activate photocatalytic water splitting reactions, upconverted deep UV emission enables H2 generation under visible light (λ > 420 nm) excitation from a xenon lamp. The efficient deep UV upconversion stems from tuning 4f15d1 state of Pr3+ by oxyhalide constituent which both facilitates the absorption of excitation photons in long‐lived intermediate 4f2 states and suppress the probability of nonradiative relaxation from 4f15d1 state. These findings not only provide new insights into a mechanistic understanding of the host effect on upconversion process but also make a breakthrough in developing efficient deep upconversion materials that will expand their further applications. Isotopic signatures of heavy noble gases in the Earth's mantle contain a major component recycled by subduction. The experimental and field studies reported in the literature show increasing evidence that serpentine minerals can hold large quantities of noble gases, potentially serving as their primary vectors to depth. However, at present, their retention mechanism in these minerals is not fully understood. Additionally, noble gas solubilities from field and experimental studies show large differences in terms of elemental concentrations. Here, we performed crystal chemical modeling to evaluate the incorporation mechanism of noble gases and their solubilities in serpentine minerals along subduction zone geotherms. To this end, we determined the thermal equation of state of xenon using in situ X-ray diffraction and absorption up to 60 GPa and 728 K. In this range, the xenon equation of state is well-adjusted using the Mie-Grüneisen-Debye formalism with relevant fitting parameters. We show that the experimentally observed solubility trend, which follows the order Ne < He < Ar < Kr < Xe, can be explained by the incorporation of noble gases at two distinct crystallographic sites. The light noble gases He and Ne are most likely retained at the van der Waals hydrogen-oxygen bond position between the layers, while the heavy and larger noble gases enter the voids between the six-membered SiO 4 rings. It should be noted that octahedral sites can potentially host xenon, but cannot accommodate argon and krypton. Indeed, this would require unrealistic flexibility of the crystal lattice. Our models extended to mantle wedge conditions predict decreasing solubilities, particularly for light noble gases, in agreement with observations from natural samples. Compared to the noble gas concentrations determined experimentally in serpentine, natural concentrations are much higher and very variable. Our solubility model confirms that equilibrium processes cannot explain these observations. We therefore suggest that the high and variable noble gas concentrations found in natural samples must be due to hybrid hydration processes in ultramafic rocks that involve different degrees of water activities. Carbon dioxide (CO 2) is an attractive candidate for condensable propellants because its availability and storability. Although several studies have been reported on adopting CO 2 as a propellant for Hall thrusters, there have been few studies on CO 2 standalone operation, and none of them have focused on physical phenomena in plasmas. This study experimentally evaluated, thrust performance and plume characteristics of a 100 W-class Hall thruster under CO 2 operation. CO 2 operation was compared to xenon operation under the same discharge power conditions to determine its unique properties. As typical thrust performance under this experimental condition, a specific impulse of 727 s, thrust-power-ratio of 19.8 mN/kW, and anode efficiency of 0.0711 were achieved at a discharge voltage of 200 V and a discharge power of 352 W under a background pressure of 3.4 × 10−2 Pa. Plume measurements showed that mass utilization efficiency was 0.228 under CO 2 operation, which was particularly poor compared to under xenon operation. The first reason for this is that the ionization mean free path of CO 2 is 5.18 mm, about eight times longer than that of xenon. The second reason is that the energy is used for other processes, such as dissociative ionization and dissociation etc., considering the reaction process of the particles. Therefore, the results suggest narrowing the channel width to increase the channel density, and increasing the magnetic field strength to suppress the discharge current as ways to improve thrust efficiency. • A 100 W-class Hall thruster was operated under CO 2 conditions. • Thrust performance and plume characteristics were evaluated. • The anode efficiency under CO 2 operation was 0.0711, which 40 % of xenon. • Low anode efficiency was attributable to low mass utilization efficiency. • A method to improve mass utilization efficiency, narrowing the channel width is suggested. Abstract Background Postoperative delirium (POD) is a common complication that is characterized by acute onset of impaired cognitive function and is associated with an increased mortality, a prolonged duration of hospital stay, and additional healthcare expenditures. The incidence of POD in elderly patients undergoing laparoscopic radical colectomy ranges from 8 to 54%. Xenon has been shown to provide neuroprotection in various neural injury models, but the clinical researches assessing the preventive effect of xenon inhalation on the occurrence of POD obtained controversial findings. This study aims to investigate the effects of a short xenon inhalation on the occurrence of POD in elderly patients undergoing laparoscopic radical colectomy. Methods/design This is a prospective, randomized, controlled trial and 132 patients aged 65–80 years and scheduled for laparoscopic radical colectomy will be enrolled. The participants will be randomly assigned to either the control group or the xenon group (n = 66 in each group). The primary outcome will be the incidence of POD in the first 5 days after surgery. Secondary outcomes will include the subtype, severity, and duration of POD, postoperative pain score, Pittsburgh Sleep Quality Index (PQSI), perioperative non-delirium complications, and economic parameters. Additionally, the study will investigate the activation of microglial cells, expression of inflammatory factors in colon tissues, plasma inflammatory factors, and neurochemical markers. Discussion Elderly patients undergoing laparoscopic radical colectomy are at a high risk of POD, with delayed postoperative recovery and increased healthcare costs. Xenon stimulates the synthesis of the hormone erythropoietin, which leads to improved oxygen supply to tissues, increased endurance and can be used by athletes to gain an undue advantage in competitions. The World Anti-Doping Agency (WADA) banned its use. The determination of xenon in biological fluids, in particular, in blood plasma samples, is difficult due to the narrow detection window. Its indirect detection is possible by changing in some blood parameters during a clinical analysis (RET%, HGB, HCT, etc.), however, this analysis is nonspecific and the use of other erythropoiesis-stimulating agents can lead to similar changes.Aims: The aim of the study was to search for long-term microRNA markers, the expression of which is specific and markedly altered by inhaled xenon.Methods: Quantitative real-time PCR was performed on CFX96 Bio-Rad analyser using miRCURY® LNA® miRNA SYBR® Green PCR Kit and panels for studying the expression profiles of mature microRNAs of the hypoxia signaling pathway miRCURY LNA™ miRNA Focus Panel.Results: Based on statistical data analysis, it was found that the expression of hsa-miR-378a-3p and hsa-miR-491-5p in blood plasma increases significantly (more than 70 times) when xenon inhalations are used as an erythropoiesis stimulator. Measurement of hematological parameters before and after inhalation showed no significant changes that could affect endurance or give competitive advantages.Conclusion: The evaluated difference in microRNA expression levels before and after administration of the xenon mixture (Xe/O2) makes hsa-miR-378a-3p and hsa-miR-491-5p potential candidates for the role of long-term markers of xenon abuse.

AbstractHere we present a new method of irradiating 132Xe capsules with neutrons to produce 133mXe gas standards that are used for radiation detector calibration at radioxenon measurement laboratories in support of the Comprehensive Test Ban Treaty (CTBT). This method is designed to maximize the production of 133mXe compared to 133Xe, both of which are competing products from the 132Xe(n, g) reaction. The 133mXe is produced at a much higher fraction for high-energy neutron absorptions in 132Xe (~50% for fast neutrons versus ~11% for thermal neutrons).We performed “spectral tuning” of the Washington State University (WSU) TRIGA reactor neutron spectrum inside the 132Xe ampules to maximize the number of fast neutrons and minimize the number of thermal neutrons available for 132Xe absorption. Spectral tuning analysis, done with Monte Carlo simulations, provided valuable insights into a future final design for a 132Xe irradiation capsule. With no spectral tuning, the fractional yield of 133mXe in the WSU reactor was ~11.7%. By surrounding the 132Xe capsule with a 0.5-cm-thick layer of tungsten and a 2.83-cm layer of europium (III) oxide and placing it in the reactor’s cadmium rotator tube next to the fuel elements, the fractional yield of 133mXe can be increased to 24.6%, a 111% increase in yield. Thus, by improving the fractional yield of 133mXe through spectral tuning, the CTBT will have better quality gas standards to use for radioxenon detector calibration to assist in the CTBT’s mission. Background: Neonatal sepsis is known to cause neurodevelopment impairment and has been reported to increase risks for neurological/ psychiatric disorders. In this study, we investigated the effect of xenon, a well-known potent neuroprotective gas, on neonatal sepsis-induced neurodevelopment impairment in rats together with underlying mechanism by focusing on receptor-interacting protein kinase (RIP) mediated neuronal necroptosis. Methods: 3-day-old Sprague–Dawley rat pups were exposed to either 70% xenon or N2 balanced with O2 for 6 h, during which lipopolysaccharide (LPS) was injected intraperitoneally for 3 times (500 μg/kg for the 1st and 250 μg/kg for the second and third dose; n = 6–10/group). In another cohort of 3-day-old rat pups, intracerebroventricular injection of necrostatin-1 (4 µg in 4 µl saline, a RIP-1-targeted inhibitor of necroptosis) was performed 20 min after the third dose of LPS. The learning ability and memory were assessed 25 days after LPS injection. Then, their hippocampus was collected for neuronal necroptosis with RIP and MIKL assessments using western blot and in situ immunostaining. Systemic and neuro-inflammation was also assessed. Results: LPS insult resulted in elevation of pro-inflammatory cytokine TNF-? and IL-6, caused neuronal necroptosis and damaged synaptic integrity at the brain developing stage, which finally led to the long-term cognitive impairment. Xenon inhibited necroptosis associated mediator RIP-1, RIP-3, and MLKL activation, protected neurons and attenuated cognitive dysfunction induced by LPS. Like xenon, the similar pattern changes induced by a RIP-1 inhibitor Necrostatin-1 were also found. Conclusion: This study indicates that necroptosis is involved in neonatal sepsisinduced neurofunctional impairments and xenon may be a novel therapeutic strategy to prevent/treat cognitive impairment in neonatal septic patients. In the present work, analyses have been performed to determine spectroscopic parameters, including transition probabilities, and relative line strengths of discharge-produced xenon plasma. We present the transition probabilities of twenty-three emission lines originating from the 5p56p →5p56s transition array of neutral xenon covering the wavelength range from 450 to 1100 nm using a xenon-filled hollow cathode discharge lamp. The experimental absolute transition probabilities have been measured by combining the reported lifetimes of upper levels with the integrated spectral intensities of xenon transitions. The results agree well with the reported data in the NIST database, where available. The theoretical line strengths for all spectral transitions originating from the 5p56p→5p56s transition array have been calculated in the LS, LK, jj, and jck coupling schemes using the 3j, 6j, and 9j symbol relations. Furthermore, the normalized experimental line strengths have also been measured and compared with theoretical line strengths, which confirm that the jj and jck coupling scheme is more appropriate for the level designation of xenon. Residual crystalline defects on the subsurface of Xe‐implanted Si(001) and post‐annealed substrates are investigated by advanced X‐ray diffraction and transmission electron microscopy techniques. Local characterization highlights the features of recrystallization and structural evolution induced by thermal treatments resulting from the formation of gaseous Xe nanobubbles embedded in a heavily twinned surrounding Si matrix. Both mappings of conventional reciprocal space and X‐ray multiple‐beam diffraction exhibited different aspects from the kinematical and dynamical X‐ray theories, respectively, contributing to a better understanding and description approach of residual damage in ion‐beam implanted materials. A simple layered model is proposed based on the experimental Q‐Scans profiles and computational calculations, distinguishing host matrix structural strain artifacts from the Xe‐bubbles pressure probed by a Xe M4,5‐edge blue shift in EELS spectra. Bubble pressure is determined by extrapolating the equation of state for xenon at high temperatures. Purpose: Out-of-hospital cardiac arrest (OHCA) carries a relatively poor prognosis and requires multimodal prognostication to guide clinical decisions. Identification of previously unrecognized metabolic routes associated with patient outcome may contribute to future biomarker discovery. In OHCA, inhaled xenon elicits neuro- and cardioprotection. However, the metabolic effects remain unknown. Materials and methods: In this post-hoc study of the randomised, 2-group, single-blind, phase 2 Xe-Hypotheca trial, 110 OHCA survivors were randomised 1:1 to receive targeted temperature management (TTM) at 33°C with or without inhaled xenon during 24 h. Blood samples for nuclear magnetic resonance spectroscopy metabolic profiling were drawn upon admission, at 24 and 72 h. Results: At 24 h, increased lactate, adjusted hazard-ratio 2.25, 95% CI [1.53; 3.30], p<0.001, and decreased branched-chain amino acids (BCAA) leucine 0.64 [0.5; 0.82], p = 0.007, and valine 0.37 [0.22; 0.63], p = 0.003, associated with 6-month mortality. At 72 h, increased lactate 2.77 [1.76; 4.36], p<0.001, and alanine 2.43 [1.56; 3.78], p = 0.001, and decreased small HDL cholesterol ester content (S-HDL-CE) 0.36 [0.19; 0.68], p = 0.021, associated with mortality. No difference was observed between xenon and control groups. Conclusions: In OHCA patients receiving TTM with or without xenon, high lactate and alanine and decreased BCAAs and S-HDL-CE associated with increased mortality. It remains to be established whether current observations on BCAAs, and possibly alanine and lactate, could reflect neural damage via their roles in the metabolism of the neurotransmitter glutamate. Xenon did not significantly alter the measured metabolic profile, a potentially beneficial attribute in the context of compromised ICU patients. The X-ray spectra of L-shell transitions in Neon-like Xenon ion (Xe44+) have been precisely measured at the Shanghai Electron-Beam Ion Trap using a high-resolution crystal spectrometer. Focusing on the line-intensity ratio of the 3F {2p6-(2p51/23s1/2)J=1} and 3D {2p6-(2p53/23d5/2)J=1} lines (3F/3D), our measurements have achieved remarkable precision improvements over the previous studies. These spectra have been simulated using the collisional-radiative model (CRM) within the Flexible Atomic Code, showing good agreement with the measurements. The previously reported discrepancies, approximately ranging from 10% to 20%, have been significantly reduced in this work to below 1.4% for electron-beam energies exceeding 6 keV and to around 7% for lower energies. Furthermore, our analysis of population fluxes of the involved levels reveals a very high sensitivity of the 3F line to radiation cascades. This suggests that the current CRM, which conventionally excludes interionic population transfer processes, may underestimate the population of the upper level of the 3F line and the cascade-related higher levels, thus explaining the remaining discrepancies. The results of a study of a pulsed short-arc unlimited high-pressure xenon discharge as a source of UV radiation are presented. A theoretical analysis of the possibility of increasing the efficiency of xenon discharge radiation in the UV region of the spectrum is performed, the design of a three-electrode flash lamp is described, and the electrical, brightness and spectral characteristics of the source being developed are studied. The terrestrial abundance anomalies of helium and xenon suggest the presence of deep-Earth reservoirs of these elements, which has led to great interest in searching for materials that can host these usually unreactive elements. Here, using an advanced crystal structure search approach in conjunction with first-principles calculations, we show that several Xe/He-bearing iron halides are thermodynamically stable in a broad region of P–T phase space below 60 GPa. Our results present a compelling case for sequestration of He and Xe in the early Earth and may suggest their much wider distribution in the present Earth than previously believed. Ultra-short and intense laser interactions with noble gas are used for accelerating or generating different particles such as electrons, protons or X-rays. Few works have addressed gases, particularly Xenon (Xe). Nevertheless, the analysis of attosecond electron pulses remains a major challenge. Thus, we study clusters of Xe, which leads to high excitation energy. To do this, we adopted the nanoplasma model. Thereby, we simulate the emission electron beam generated by laser absorption to optimize the electron energy and develop ultra-short pulse dense for the development of better detectors capable of resolving higher photon numbers and heat source length. From the simulation results, we found an important production of electrons, proportionally to the number of aggregates under the short and intense laser. In the first ionization, the minimum estimated energy absorbed agrees with the theory. Abstract: The interface between two‐dimensional (2D) crystals often forms a Moiré superstructure that imposes a new periodicity, which is a key element in realizing complex electronic phases as evidenced in twisted bilayer graphene. Acombined angle‐resolved photoemission spectroscopy measurements and first‐principles calculations reveal the formation of a Moiré superstructure between a 2D Dirac semi‐metallic crystal, graphene, and a 2D insulating crystal of noble gas, xenon. Incommensurate diffraction pattern and folded Dirac cones around the Brillouin zone center imply the formation of hexagonal crystalline array of xenon atoms. The velocity of Dirac fermions increases upon the formation of the 2D xenon crystal on top of graphene due to the enhanced dielectric screening by the xenon over‐layer. These findings not only provide a novel method to produce a Moiré superstructure from the adsorption of noble gas on 2D materials, but also to control the physical properties of graphene by the formation of a graphene‐noble gas interface.

We describe a method and an apparatus for producing hyperpolarized (HP) Xe gas of high concentration without Xe condensation. The HP Xe generator works under atmospheric pressure and employs a quasi-continuous method to provide a continuous supply of HP Xe gas by adopting technologies for supplying a highly pure gas, a gas control system and precise pressure control. The apparatus has a glass cell containing solid Rb metal and solid Xe in vacuum at a low temperature and is heated so that the Xe becomes a gas and Rb exists in a gas-liquid mixture. Then a magnetic field is applied with laser beam irradiation to produce polarized Xe gas of high concentration. The device was evaluated using a 2T magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) scanner. Long-term experimental operation demonstrated the continuous collection of 30 ml syringes of HP Xe gas with a sufficient polarization rate for fast one scan acquisition. A practical device for the automated manufacture of HP 129Xe gas was thus successfully developed.

Particle dark matter could belong to a multiplet that includes an electrically charged state. WIMP dark matter (χ0) accompanied by a negatively charged excited state (χ−) with a small mass difference (e.g. < 20 MeV) can form a bound-state with a nucleus such as xenon. This bound-state formation is rare and the released energy is O(1−10) MeV depending on the nucleus, making large liquid scintillator detectors suitable for detection. We searched for bound-state formation events with xenon in two experimental phases of the KamLAND-Zen experiment, a xenon-doped liquid scintillator detector. No statistically significant events were observed. For a benchmark parameter set of WIMP mass mχ0=1 TeV and mass difference Δm=17 MeV, we set the most stringent upper limits on the recombination cross section times velocity 〈σv〉 and the decay-width of χ− to 9.2×10−30 cm3/s and 8.7×10−14 GeV, respectively at 90% confidence level.

Nuclear data are used to describe the properties of the nucleus and the reactions of the nucleus with other particles. The accuracy and reliability of nuclear data play important roles in nuclear fundamental research and nuclear technology application. The radioactive noble gas Xe and Kr are usually used for neutron activation analysis of nuclear materials. However, it is necessary to separate radioactive Xe from Kr because of the interference of radioactive Kr isotopes during nuclear data measurement. Furthermore, separating Kr from Xe is an important step in removing long half-life radioactive 85Kr during spent nuclear fuel treatment. Therefore, separation of Xe and Kr from Xe/Kr mixtures is of great importance to the accuracy of nuclear data measurement and the capture of radioactive gaseous products from nuclear facilities. The conventional method to separate Xe and Kr is fractional distillation at cryogenic temperatures, which is an energy intensive process and not suitable for low concentration radioactive gas separation. The adsorptive separation of Xe/Kr mixtures using porous materials is considered as an energy-effective and cost-effective alternative. Metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) receive much attention in a variety of applications due to their large specific surface area, adjustable porosity, and easy functionalization. HKUST-1 is a representative MOF composed of dimeric Cu2+ paddlewheel secondary building units with unsaturated metal centers and benzenetricarboxylate linkers, and it is regarded as an attractive adsorbent for gas-adsorption because of its accessible open Cu2+ metal sites in the pore and the ease of industrial-scale preparation. However, HKUST-1 is mostly fabricated in powder form which require well shaped from powders to a suitable particle while maintaining their intrinsic properties and performances in real application scenarios. It is worth noting that unshaped MOF powder is not suitable for adsorption columns or pressure/temperature swing adsorption units, as the powders can lead to issues such as pressure drop and inhomogeneous gas flow. Thus, the shaping of MOFs on a macroscopic level is essential for successful deployment of these materials. Besides, HKUST-1 pellets used for the adsorption separation of low concentration Xe and Kr have not been fully studied. In this work, HKUST-1 powder was shaped with polyvinyl alcohol binder to produce spherical particles. The results of compression tests show that the HKUST-1 spherical particles have relatively high compressive strength. The static adsorption data of Xe(Kr) on HKUST-1 powder and pellet samples show that at low pressure, Xe(Kr) Henry coefficient and Xe/Kr Henry selectivity are almost no change at 0 ℃ or 25 ℃, respectively. The Xe(Kr) isosteric heat on HKUST-1 pellets is smaller than that on HKUST-1 powder. The low concentration Xe/Kr mixtures dynamic separation on HKUST-1 pellets was evaluated at 25 ℃ and 100 kPa by breakthrough experiments. The breakthrough curves reveal that HKUST-1 pellets could efficiently separate Xe from Kr. The dynamic capacity of Xe and corresponding Xe/Kr dynamic adsorption selectivity increase along with the increase of volumetric flow rate when Xe outlet concentration (c/c0) fixed at 0.02, and Xe(Kr) dynamic saturated capacity and corresponding Xe/Kr dynamic adsorption selectivity remain constant at different volumetric flow rates. In order to predict the theoretical breakthrough curves, Wheeler-Jonas model was applied to determine the model parameters at the initial Xe breakthroughs in the adsorption column. The results show that Wheeler-Jonas model is in good agreement with the experimental data when the Xe outlet concentration (c/c0) is less than 0.02.

Since xenon (Xe) production is always an unavoidable part of the fission products in fuel pellets, the challenges of its presence have always been the subject of many papers. In line with these goals, in the present paper, the effect of the presence of grain boundaries (GBs) with misorientations (θ G B ) of 36 ° , 39 ° , 52 ° , 53 ° , 71 ° , and 129 ° in 10%Xe-UO2 (uranium dioxide in which 10% of its uranium atoms have been replaced by xenon atoms) on the behavior of xenon (diffusion, nucleation, and formation of clusters) was investigated by performing molecular dynamics (MD) simulations. The results showed that xenon atoms aggregate in the GB with misorientations of 36 ° and 53 ° and form larger clusters relative to other GBs. This was interpreted due to the low formation energy of these two GBs in comparison with other misorientations. A decrease in the number of xenon atoms was also observed at a slight distance from these two GB regions, indicating their sink efficiency. The calculation of diffusion coefficients also indicated that the presence of these two GBs increases the coefficients (xenon, oxygen, and uranium). All of these demonstrate the effective role of θ G B = 36 ° and θ G B = 53 ° in swelling. To reduce the destructive effect of xenon atoms on the fuel pellet, a conceptual design in the form of nanoporous was proposed. The results of the MD simulation of such a design showed that the presence of nano-porosity significantly reduces xenon clusters. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]
