ECOTOURISM , *STANDARD of living , *COMMUNITIES , *SATISFACTION , *TOURISM research , *SUSTAINABILITY - Abstract
Nature-based tourism is a type of tourism that is primarily concerned with the direct enjoyment of relatively undisturbed natural phenomena. Today, it is among the types of tourism which are characterised by significant growth rates at the global level. It has considerable growth potential and its development can concurrently ensure tourist satisfaction with the nature experience, profit for tourism providers, funds for environmental protection and an improvement in living standards in local communities. Nevertheless, it is also important to be aware of the potential negative implications of nature-based tourism development and to continuously manage all aspects of sustainability. This paper aims to determine the main study aspects of nature-based tourism, the most common methodological approaches and the most important characteristics of its contemporary development. For this purpose, an analysis of recent empirical research on nature-based tourism was conducted, and a total of 41 original scientific papers were included in the analysis. The four study aspects derived from this analysis contribute to determining the general characteristics of nature-based tourism's contemporary development, the prerequisite factors for this development, and the effects it has on a given area. - Abstract
In the field of science, human rights and environmental protection are multidisciplinary fields. Hence different approaches to their interaction. In the context of the historical development of human rights, the right to a healthy environment belongs to the third generation of human rights. Due to the increase in industrialization around the world and the use of technologies which main feature is the easy availability and low cost of raw materials and processes, a number of global environmental problems have appeared (ozone depletion, global warming, climate change, etc.) which required a global response. The previous approaches (Stockholm Conference, etc.) were not enough, a new concept was needed that prevents the emergence of problems. A new concept, called sustainable development, implies economic development without permanent impact on the environment. Through the principle of sustainable development, the last UN concept for environmental protection and improvement of society in all segments was formulated, called Agenda 2030. BiH is a signatory to the agenda, but main driver of progress in the field of environmental protection and human rights is BiH's aspiration to join the EU. One of the key meeting points of human rights and environmental protection should be the rights of activists for environmental protection, resolving their legal status through a law that will recognize their importance. The EU is specifically working on this, so it is expected that BiH will also make progress in the field of better status of activists for environmental protection, through the process of joining EU. The paper discusses the need for an EU wide ban of microplastics. The focus is on the announced EU regulation on the ban of intentionally added microplastics. The paper firstly presents published results from research in natural science on the widespread of microplastic pollution and its influence on human health and life of animals and plants. These findings are used to analyse from a legal perspective to what extent there is a need for an EU ban on microplastics, what should be the scope of such regulation and what are the potential economic and regulatory impacts. The increase of plastic pollution caused by the COVID-19 pandemic is in this paper analysed as an important factor for a stricter EU approach towards microplastics. The EU for now decided to ban only the use of microplastics in rinse-off products and not in leave-on products. The EU did not show the ambition to be a front-runner on this matter, despite the economic benefits and its front-runner status in recycling. The comparative analysis confirms that the EU so far only reacts to already enacted legislation in other parts of the globe. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

MEDICAL waste disposal , *SCIENTIFIC literature , *MEDICAL laboratories , *INDUSTRIAL safety , *MEDICAL laws , *OCCUPATIONAL diseases , *REGIONAL differences - Abstract
The basic principles of the medical laboratory are based on biosafety work with the aim of ensuring quality and protection of public health. Aim of the research: point out the importance of biosafety work of medical laboratories as a basis for environmental protection (including the professional aspect) and risk assessment, and to investigate and compare the harmonization of biosafety legislation. Material and methods: For the preparation of this study through a scientific review of the literature, scientific papers were used as well as regulations and legislations, which were used to perform a comparison and analysis. Results: A comparison of laws and bylaws on occupational safety at the state and regional level shows that they are not sufficiently harmonized with EU directives, and are aimed at developing strategies for prevention of occupational diseases, protection of work and local environment, and reducing the risk of accidents. Most of the current bylaws have been taken over from the Socialist Federal Republic of Yugoslavia. The countries of the Western Balkans are “chronically lagging behind” European countries in the process of infectious waste management. Problems of inadequate disposal of infectious medical waste, lack of inspection over the work of the private and public sector, lack of experts for biosafety control are just some of the risks of failing to combat the consequent reflection on the environment. over a number of years and has shown no or minimal progress in passing new laws. Conclusion: Adequate analysis of criteria and indicators for occupational risk assessment based on standards, regulations, directives and other legislation in the field of safety and health at work, is one of the basic prerequisites for quality assurance and biosafety. In our country, it is vital to work intensively on detailed harmonization of laws and bylaws with regulations of higher levels. Also of great importance in the legislative suppression of the problem is the adoption of the Law on Medical Laboratory Activity, which would regulate the principles of work, define the bearers of work activities, as well as the strategy of organizing and implementing laboratory work. - Abstract
TWENTIETH century , *CHEMICAL warfare , *ENVIRONMENTAL protection , *EXPLOSIVES , *POISONS - Abstract
The public image of chemistry is both positive and negative; positive because of its application in all human affairs (industry, agriculture, medicine, etc.), and negative for its connection with dangerous chemicals (explosives, poisons). Therefore, a good populariser of chemistry has not only to praise but also to defend chemistry to bring it forth to the common people. The fulfilment of both these requirements is clearly visible in the opus of the leading Croatian populariser of chemistry in the 20th century, Fran Bubanović (1883–1956), the first chemistry professor at the Zagreb School of Medicine (1917). He took pains to persuade the reader that chemistry is not dangerous and difficult to learn but rather a major vehicle for the progress of a nation, and especially an underdeveloped nation, as was Croatia in his time. In this contribution, the general causes of the fear of chemistry and chemicals (chemophobia) were also discussed. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

This paper investigates the policy of agricultural land management and the development of karst areas in Croatia, presenting complex and interconnected topics of utmost importance for the preservation of biological diversity, sustainable agricultural production and improvement of the living conditions of the local population. It reviews the dynamics of rural development in the EU, with an emphasis on policies affecting agriculture, cohesion, and the integration of urban and rural space, and especially emphasizes the importance of the EU Agenda 2000, the new financial architecture of the European Agricultural Fund for Rural Development (EPFRR) and the impact of the Europe 2020 Strategy to rural areas. The paper specifically analyzes the management of agricultural land in Croatia, with a focus on state-owned land. The rural competitiveness of Croatia after EU accession is also considered. Aspects of karst area management are analyzed, including current shortcomings and potential for improvement. In doing so, it relies on an integrated approach that includes environmental protection, preservation of cultural heritage, promotion of sustainable agricultural practices, and support to local communities. The paper comprises a comparative study of land management (LRM) policies in selected countries, including Latvia, Lithuania, Estonia, Austria and Sweden. It considers how these policies can affect land use patterns in Croatia. For a better understanding of attitudes and practices related to the management of agricultural land and the development of karst areas in Croatia, empirical research was conducted through a focus group. Based on this comprehensive analysis, the paper draws conclusions and recommendations for future actions and research, with an emphasis on an integrated approach involving local residents, farmers, experts, and local and national authorities in joint efforts for the sustainable development of karst areas.

Recently, the appearance of microplastic particles has come under increasing public scrutiny. Microplastics cannot be completely decomposed, and they have a negative impact on the environment, human health, and the health of other living beings. Namely, the digestive system of the organism cannot digest microplastics, which represents a health risk for the ecosystem. Microplastics can bind chemicals from the environment, as well as bacteria and microbes that then create a biofilm. It is precisely for this reason that the problem of microplastics should be taken seriously, because if microplastics reach the human body, they can release toxic compounds as well as the microbes bound in it, damaging human health. In order to remove microplastics, there are several solutions, of which the extraction of microplastics with ferrofluids is presented in this paper. Ferrofluids represent a very strong magnetizing liquid composed of a liquid medium, containing solid magnetic particles of very small size, colloidally dispersed in a liquid carrier. The removal of microplastics with ferrofluids is very effective because even the smallest particles of microplastics can bind to the ferrofluid and be removed using a magnet. In this work, ferrofluid based on synthetic oil and six solutions of microplastic particles (polystyrene (PS) and polyvinyl chloride (PVC)) in the size range from slightly less than 300 μm to 500 μm were used. The microplastic removal technique with ferrofluid has been proven to be effective and fast. Polystyrene particles had generally better removal efficiency than polyvinyl chloride particles. It was also found that larger particles of 355-500 μm are easier to extracted than smaller particles of less than 300 μm.

Criminal legislation on environmental protection has undergone a natural evolution of development, with continuous qualitative changes in order to provide the most advanced approach to protection of the environment. The criminal legal framework for environmental protection in Kosovo has been exposed to these constant changes, which is reflected in all applicable laws in this field since 1977. This paper aims to highlight the manner of such development, respectively to describe the characteristics that have distinguished the legal framework for environmental protection, from the Criminal Law of 1977 to the currently applicable Criminal Code of Kosovo. The paper also sets out to cover the similarities and differences that these laws, namely criminal codes, have had over the years. In this study we used the qualitative method of legal analysis and comparison, and a review of relevant literature. Based on the results of this study, it can be concluded that the criminal legal framework regarding environmental protection has been continuously developed and undergone significant qualitative changes over the years. Initially, the criminal law rules for environmental protection in Kosovo appeared with the Criminal Law of 1977, but due to political circumstances, these rules remained unchanged and without any impact on the objective reality. During the time of international administration, and the issuance of the Provisional Criminal Code of Kosovo, some types and elements of these criminal offenses were inherited from the environment sector, but in general, the criminal legal framework has changed radically, taking as its reference the international standards and legal solutions provided by states with legislation developed in this field. Following Kosovo’s declaration of independence, and even with the adoption of two criminal codes, the chapter on criminal offenses against the environment has been preserved and has not undergone any significant changes other than full recognition of the responsibility of legal entities for all criminal offenses., Kazneno zakonodavstvo za zaštitu okoliša prošlo je svoju prirodnu evoluciju kontinuiranim kvalitativnim izmjenama koje su vodile oblikovanju što naprednijeg pristupa zaštiti okoliša.

Ovladavanje urbanim razvojem postavlja zahtjeve u okviru integriranog i održivog postupka koji neophodno vodi do boljeg karakteriziranja procjene okoliša.

Naposljetku, regresijskom analizom provedenom na podacima prikupljenim sa stanice International Energy Agency dokazuje se da je cijena baterije po kilovat satu jedan od važnih čimbenika u razvoju industrije električnih automobila, dok deskriptivna analiza pruža detaljan uvid u dodatne varijable koje determiniraju razinu prodaje električnih automobila., Ever since the automobile has been invented, the automotive industry has been the generator of numerous technological improvements which, due to obligatory environmental protection legislation and limited energy resources, are more and more focused on to use of electric power. In this sense, electric cars represent an important segment of the observed market, and over time, it is expected that all producers will focus on this type of vehicle. Following the above, the paper investigates the characteristics of the automotive market with special emphasis on the electric car market. The results of the research based on analysis of Pearson correlation coefficient calculated by using data collected from Companies market cap and Statista show that the value of the companies’ stock price in the observed market in the period from 2010 to 2020 is not correlated with each observed year with the number of sold cars. However, by using the Herfindahl-Hirschman index and concentration ratio (CR4) calculated by using data collected from Knoema, it is confirmed that competition forces the most important participants in the internal combustion car market to rapidly restructure and focus on electric cars in order not to lose the existing market share. Finally, regression analysis of data collected from the International Energy Agency proved that the price of a battery per kilowatt-hour is one of the important factors in the development of the electric car industry, while additional descriptive analysis provides detailed insight into different variables determining the level of sales of electric vehicles.

In the last few years, non-profit organizations for environmental protection have been gaining more and more popularity on the domestic and global market due to concerns about sustainability. Marketing of such organizations is crucial for their successful operation and development. This paper provides a direct comparison between the marketing of one global organization - World Wild Fund for Nature, and two Croatian associations - Zelena Akcija and Udruga Sunce. By comparing these organizations, positive and negative practices in marketing are determined, and an attempt is made to review the key differences between the marketing of global and national organizations.

Svrha ovog rada je analiza ekološki održivog načina poslovanja u IT tvrtkama u Osijeku.

Looking throughout history, the improvement of technology and science has changed the way people live. Although it improved the quality of human life, it resulted in many problems in nature. With an insight into the already created consequences caused by the destruction of nature, there is an increase in interest in environmental protection and sustainable development. In order to achieve both, it is necessary to develop environmental awareness, which is considered a prerequisite for solving the present environmental problems. Ecological upbringing and education, which are in the Republic of Croatia, implemented during preschool, elementary and high school education, play a significant role in the development of environmental awareness. In addition to the above, there are programs that can be implemented in schools, which place special emphasis on the importance of environmental education. An example of such a program is the international Eco-school program, which aims to implement environmental education in all parts of the educational system and in the daily life of all participants. As the development of ecological awareness is a neccesity in ecological action, the aim of this paper is to examine the ecological awareness of 8th-grade eco-school students. Through this research in this paper, we try to get an insight into the knowledge, attitudes and habits about the environment that students of eco-schools have and practice. The research was conducted using an online survey, and the sample consisted of 124 male and female students of the 8th grade of schools in the area of the City of Zagreb, where it was necessary that the school had an active eco-school status. The analysis of the research results showed that the students of eco-schools mostly show a high level of knowledge, positive attitudes and pro-environmental behavior, but also that there is room for improvement in all areas.

The goal of this study is the application of artificial intelligence methods to develop models for estimating the concentration of particle matter in the air. Random forest regression and neural networks models were developed using the Python programming language and its libraries. Meteorological data used in this study is related to the Austrian city of Graz measured at five stations, namely: North, East, West, South and Don Bosco. In addition to meteorological data, the concentration of particle matter in the air is also measured at the stations. Additionally, satellite data from the Climate Data store is also used. Using these data, models were developed for all the stations and it was observed which data would contribute more to the final quality of the model. It has been proven that models with locally acquired meteorological data are better than models with satellite meteorological data. Furthermore, traffic data obtained by measuring traffic on sixteen roads in the city is also used in this study. Traffic data has been added to the set with local and satellite meteorological data. It has been proven that traffic as an additional variable improved the quality of the model’s assessments. This increase was more pronounced in the set with local data. In the end, all the above data is combined into two sets, where the first set consisted of local and satellite meteorological data, and the second set consisted of local and satellite meteorological data to which traffic was also added. With the random forest algorithm, the model developed using the set with all the data, i.e. the local and satellite meteorological with traffic, turned out to be the best. However, with the neural network algorithm, the model using all data show slightly worse results in comparison with neural network model developed on set with local meteorological data and traffic. The developed models showed satisfactory accuracy and can be applied to estimating the concentration of particle matter in the air using the new data set.

In Croatia, companies are increasingly accepting the concept of CSR as a modern business practice. Social responsibility refers to the company's commitment to direct its business strategy, decisions, and activities to improve the economic, natural, and social environment in which it is located and operates. Companies must not only be profitable but also have a positive impact on the environment and the working environment in which they operate. After researching socially responsible business on the example of PSC Dalmatia, which operates in the city of Split, it is confirmed that the company takes into account the interests of owners, workers, local community, suppliers, external associates, and other stakeholders with whom they come into contact. in this way, they show their commitment to corporate social responsibility. A positive link was also established between competitive advantage and successful implementation of the CSR concept of PSC Dalmacija d.o.o. in community investment, human resources, and ecology.

Purpose. The paper deals with the Croatian "Green libraries", discussing the meaning of the library programs and services focused on educating users about sustainable development of society and importance of environmental protection as well as learning life-improving skills that affect not only individuals but the whole society. The goal of the article is to offer an insight into the range of ideas and possibilities that Croatian libraries have accomplished so far in their efforts to effectively connect librarianship and ecology. Methodology. The examples are presented chronologically beginning with the year 2011, when the Association of Istria Librarians started the "Green library" project, within which many green library programs were initiated and have been carried out ever since in different types of libraries throughout Croatia. The discussed examples of green libraries were selected by certain criteria: they were presented at professional conferences, described in published articles, or there were information about them on the libraries' web pages. Findings. The accomplishments of the Croatian "Green libraries" prove that libraries conduct a wide array of activities as part of the program. The cooperation between libraries and different institutions, associations, and individuals that deal with sustainable development, fauna and flora preservation, and environmental protection is particularly important. Many of these programs have been initiated through s direct cooperation between libraries and local communities, proving the importance of recognizing and taking into account library users' demands. Social implications. In its "Statement on Libraries and Development" (2013), IFLA invited policy and decision makers to recognize libraries as reliable institutions carrying out programs which contribute significantly to solving sustainability issues concerning the entire community. Originality. The article offers the first overview of the previous Croatian practices and experiences with "Green libraries", which can serve as guidelines and motivate other librarians in their future work.

Ključnu ulogu u podizanju razine ekološke osviještenosti djece i mladih imaju upravo odgoj i obrazovanje. The development of technology, science and the economy has significantly improved the quality of people's lives. However, this has also resulted in an increase in the gap between man and nature, whose relationship is increasingly characterized as irrational. The anthropological factor is the culprit behind climate change and its effects on human health and the environment. Now that the society has begun to feel the consequences of the damage done to the environment on a global scale, there has been an increase in the interest in protecting and preserving the environment. Environmental awareness is a prerequisite for facing and solving environmental problems. It consists of three components: knowledge, attitudes and behaviors. All three components are intertwined and affect each other. Education plays a key role in raising the level of environmental awareness of children and young people. The orientation and permeation of the entire work of the school with environmental issues encourages the development of environmental awareness among its students. That is why this paper aims to examine the environmental awareness of high school students in Zagreb, and gain insight into their knowledge, attitudes and habits regarding the protection and preservation of the environment. The online survey method was used in the research, and the sample of respondents consisted of 529 high-school students in the City of Zagreb. The analysis of the research results showed that students express pro-environmental attitudes, but there is room for improvement when it comes to familiarizing respondents with certain concepts in the field of ecology and environmental protection. Also, no statistically significant difference was found in the practice of environmentally conscious habits of respondents according to gender and age, i.e. class.
