Abstract

The aim of the study is to analyze that which characteristics of family business owners and family values affect the sustainability of family businesses. The study used in-depth interview which is one of the qualitative research methods. 10 family businesses which are registered with the Trabzon Chamber of Commerce and Industry as third generation are interviewed with the semi-structured questions. As a result of the study, the findings provided that the family business owners' common characteristics are being sympathetic, reliable, honest, foreseeing, loyal to hometown, having entrepreneurial spirit, having the ability to cope with the difficulties and having social awareness; the prominent family values are patriarchal family structure and fairness; business values are being honest, innovative, problem solver, work-oriented and customer orientation. Both the family business owners' characteristics and, family and business values which stated above are effective on family business sustainability, in Trabzon. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]
