Abstract

As the personal photographer for U.S. President George W. Bush, Eric Draper spends much of his time behind the scenes documenting for history the private moments of the administration. Through television and newspapers the world sees the very public and orchestrated events of the Commander In Chief, but Draper is behind the scenes for a very different view. The President Of The United States, known in press corps shorthand as POTUS, is a former fighter jet pilot in the Texas Air National Guard, and he made history in May 2003 by being the first American president to land in a jet aircraft aboard a carrier at sea. Draper is more than just the president's personal photographer. He is also the Director of the White House Photo operations. It's his job to see that every activity involving the president and the Executive Branch is covered by him or by one of the other photojournalists working on the White House staff. Eric has put in a lot of miles with his boss, including the long campaign before the election when Draper was a staff photojournalist for the Associated Press assigned to the campaign trail. Mike Davis is the White House Photo Editor who sees Eric's daily shoot, and by now maybe Davis knows Draper's style of shooting as well as the photographer himself.
