Abstract
- The article discusses the causes of undocumented migration from Central America. Particular focus is given to Guatemala, El Salvador, and Honduras. According to the author, increases in undocumented migrants seeking refuge from violence can be traced to institutional failures which undermined the democratic reforms of the 1990s. According to the author, governments returned to authoritarian practices when faced with crime, poor economic performance, and social discontent.
