Abstract

The International Headache Society defines migraine as a disabling, unilateral, recurrent, intermittent and pulsating headache associated with nausea and photo-and phonophobia. In addition to these typical symptoms, migraine is often associated with vertigo. Connections between vestibular nuclei, trigeminal system and thalamocor-tical nuclei offer a rationale for the development of a patho-physiological model of vertigo-related migraine. Despite the well-known and frequent association of migraine and vertigo, there is no uniform nomenclature for describing patients suffering from a dizziness that may be secondary to migraine, and terms like migrainous vertigo, vestibular migraine and migraine-related dizziness have all been used.
