Abstract

The purpose of this paper is the analysis of the unique influence of NYC as one of the largest metropolis on the lives of immigrant communities in the novels written by three contemporary American novelists. This thesis focuses its analyses on the relationship NYC has with its inhabitants, be they just passers-by or permanent residents. Throughout history NYC developed according to the influx of immigrants coming into the city and the USA through Ellis Island. Accordingly, thesis will focus on NYC as a space that shapes the lives of immigrant communities, exemplified by the lives of protagonists from three contemporary novels. The aim of the thesis is questioning the role of NYC in the search for the American Dream as well as questioning of human existence, especially in the context of protagonists' immigrant experience. Since the novels belong to contemporary American literature, the recent nature of the literary theoretical background enables this thesis to propose new ways of analysing the novels.
