Abstract

The article discusses the role of South Carolinian Rebecca Brewton Motte during a standoff between American patriots and American loyalists at her home in Spring 1781 during the American Revolution. It describes British military hopes for loyalist uprisings and campaign gains in the Carolinas and Georgia led by then-British general Lord Charles Cornwallis, fighting over Fort Motte, South Carolina, and the role of loyalist lieutenant Donald McPherson in attempting to hold Fort Motte.
