Abstract
- The article looks at a 1957 memoradum written by art and architecture critic Edgar Kaufmann, Jr. to industrial designer Eliot Noyes and a 1964 memorandum written by ergonomist Serge Boutourline, Jr. to Robert S. Lee, director of research at International Business Machines Corp. (IBM), both regarding the design of computer interfaces. According to the author, these documents illustrate important moments in the history of computer design. Details on the spatial separation of computer operators from certain computer components and on the rhetorical and political aspects of computing are presented.
