Abstract

The article reports on the derailment of 21 cars from a BNSF Railway unit train of 103 tanker cars in Illinois on March 5, 2015, that caused oil spill on seasonal wetlands near Mississippi River and adjacent to the Upper Mississippi River Wildlife and Fish Refuge. Topics discussed include the concern caused by the accidents over the safety of newer tank cars and the volatility of US Bakken shale crude oil and Alberta tar sands oil and the emergency rescue management provided by the government.
