Abstract

Objective To study the effect of different position on the application of capsule endoscopy through the pylorus into duodenum in gastroptosis patients. Methods Sixty gastroptosis patients who accepted OMOM capsule endoscopy from December 2007 to July 2014 were enrolled in this study. The enrolled patients were randomly divided into two groups: right lateral position group (n=30) and control group (n=30). The patients in the control group were allowed to keep upright or sitting position. The patients in the right lateral position group were instructed to lie on right side. Gastric transit time (GTT) were recorded in each patient. Results All 60 patients completed the examination and the success rate was 100% . No patients had capsule retention in the stomach. Gastric transit time in the right position group was significantly shorter than that in the control group (<0.05). Gastric transit time of moderate or severe gastroptosis patients in the right position group was significantly shorter than that of control group (<0.05). There was no significantly difference between mild gastroptosis patients of the two groups (>0.05). Conclusions The right lateral position for the gastroptosis patients can shorten gastric transit time and increase the complete examination rate of the samall bowel. For moderate or severe gastroptosis patients to shorten the transit times of CE, the right side should be taken as early as possible in order to improve the success rate of small bowel examination.
