Abstract
- A response is provided to articles by authors Fredrika J. Teute and David S. Shields in the issue on the political culture and manners and customs of U.S. presidents and their spouses during the Early Republic of 1789 through the 1800s. Particular focus is given to the powerful impact that women had on manners within the masculine society of the U.S.
