Abstract

The article discusses the U.S. banking industry's demand for the production of credit cards with embedded computer chips, known as chip cards, in an attempt to reduce card fraud and counterfeiting. The article examines the activities of an Exton, Pennsylvania, chip card manufacturing plant operated by the firm Oberthur Technologies, challenges to implementing chip card technology in retail outlets of such companies as Wal-Mart Stores Inc. and Target Corp., and the costs of manufacturing the cards.
