Abstract

Comments that the United States is only remotely in touch with Asia. American sentiment that China ought to be feared because of its nuclear build up; Equanimity of China's neighbors about its nuclearization; Japan's conclusion that China is nonaggressive; Japanese antipathy toward the U.S. on account of the war in Vietnam; Malaysia and the Philippines' trade relations with China; Absence of any high-ranking diplomat in U.S. capable of having an effective role in American-Asian relations.
