Abstract

The article examines what might happen if technology replaces a large portion of human work. Particular focus is given to the social and political significance of work. According to the author, technology may depress wages and limit the availability of full-time jobs. Details on the future of leisure time and consumption, including participation in makerspaces, are presented. Topics discussed include male unemployment, youth underemployment, and the effects of unemployment in Youngstown, Ohio.
