Migração e Desenvolvimento: Segregação e violência criminalizada.

The state of Espírito Santo, located in Brazil's south-east region, has undergone a process of accelerated modernization and urbanization over the last 50 years, and socioeconomic reflections on this process have varied in impact. This article aims to outline and discuss the effects of the process and the dynamics related to migration and criminalized violence. The empirical scope of the research has centered on the Região Metropolitana da Grande Vítoria (RMGV) [Greater Vitória Metropolitan Region], due to its absorption of migrants from various regions of the state itself, as well as from Brazil and even further afield. Our aim is to analyze the sociocultural, historical and economic context of the RMGV's transformation and development as well as to outline the reasons behind the migration phenomenon and the overdetermining factors which influence the ongoing development process such as segregation, urban exclusion, homicide and criminal subjugation.
