Abstract

There is a kind of communication established between the poet and the addressee (the reader) through aesthetic function of the language of poetry. The strength of such communication relates to understandability of poems. Difficulty in grasping the meaning preferred by the poet or incomprehension by the reader is called ambiguity in poetry. This case is taken as a significant criterion in literary criticism; however, it is occasionally considered as a linguistic defect. The term ambiguity, which hinders communication between the poet/poem and the reader is called ta'ķįd and ibhām in rhetoric (belagat); and ambiguity in the Western rhetoric, linguistics and the contemporary criticism. In this paper, firstly, the terms ta'kîd, ibhâm and ambiguity are discussed, the equivalent of obscurity described in relation to rhetoric (belagat), fluency (fesahat), semantics, stylistics and literary criticism in sources. The next part of the paper mentions certain views about whether ambiguity is a linguistic defect in terms of the literary value of a given work or the poet's style. The third part includes a discussion of obscurity, a remarkable feature of sebk-i Hindî (Indian style), traced back to the 17th century in the Persian, Indian and Turkish literature. Finally, cases that lead to obscurity in an ode (gazel) by Fehîm-i Kadîm (died in 1647), a leading figure in sebk-i Hindî in Turkish literature, are discussed with explanations and comments.
