Abstract
- Many major car manufacturers have started to offer all-electric and hybrid electric vehicles. There is no simple classification of these vehicles as to their power train and there have been several questions raised about their efficiency, range and tailpipe emissions. Their classification can be performed by using the recently introduced Plug-In Hybrid Electric Factor (Pihef). The paper proposes a slightly modified use of Pihef to simplify the evaluation of the vehicle performance and its fuel economy. The vehicles performance is analyzed with regard to their drive type (ICE, HEV, PHEV, EV) and rules and regulations adopted in the European Union and the USA. The conclusion to be drawn at this stage is that the plug-in hybrids outperform the all-electric vehicles in terms of their efficiency and usage comfort. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]
