Abstract
- The article discusses the emblematic significance of the pallor of actress Sarah Kemble Siddons and discusses her opinions on pallor through her reminiscences and correspondences. Topics include Siddons belief that her reputation as a tragic actress depended on her emotional authenticity and natural pallor and her insistence and intervention to preserve the pallor in her portrait by the artist Joshua Reynolds.
