Abstract
- This article reports that The National, the first all-sports daily newspaper in the U.S., has ceased publication with its June 13, 1991 issue after losing more than $100 million since its launch. The newspaper is a grand experiment in sports journalism that was never embraced by the advertising community. The National was published by the National American Sports Communications, a partnership controlled by Mexican media mogul Emilio Azcarraga Milmo, president-CEO of Televisa. Current and former executives of the newspaper and industry observers indicate the paper's distribution problems presented a long-term, costly challenge to survival. Those problems may have out-weighed eroding business prospects for the publishing industry.
