Abstract

This article reports that newspapers, laboring under a depressed advertising market in the U.S., are increasingly looking to private mail delivery as a potential source for revenue in 1991. By using the data bases they have developed in their markets, dailies are combining with fledgling delivery services to target home deliveries of magazines, catalogs, samples and a variety of ride-along advertisements. Newspapers once used private delivery merely to hold down costs, but the added incentive of profit has resulted from a postal rate increase during an advertising slump. In looking for new revenue streams, alternate delivery seems like a good fit, according to advertising executive Gene Grant.
