Abstract

One can spiritually feel the presence of Arthur Ashe on the grounds of Flushing Meadows Park, home to the U.S. Open. Everywhere you look, everywhere you walk, you get the feeling that he's going to jump out of a limousine and rush into the stadium and make history as he did in 1968 when he beat Tom Okker en route to a historic first-ever U.S. Open championship that jump-started the Open era of tennis. A few yards from the south entrance to the U.S. National Tennis Center, you can sit and think at the Arthur Ashe Commemorative Garden about all the things Arthur achieved during his lifetime.
