GBAS Making Measured Progress As ILS Replacement.

The article considers the potential of ground-based augmentation system (GBAS) as replacement for instrument landing system (ILS) at airports in the U.S. Several airports equipped with the Honeywell SLS-4000 SmartPath GBAS landing system are identified. It discusses the challenges to ILS replacement including the need for GBS to provide Cat. 2 and 3 ILS precision landing capabilities, the different operational costs of the two systems, and the potential sale of the Honeywell system in China.
