Abstract
- The article looks at U.S. education, focusing on the U.S. School Improvement Grant (SIG) program which has funded efforts to turn around poorly functioning public schools. The author expresses concern about proposals in the U.S. Congress to end the program and summarizes a report he wrote at the Century Foundation on the traits common to schools that used their SIG funds very effectively including McKay High School in Salem, Oregon, and Horace Mann Elementary in St. Louis, Missouri.
