Abstract

The article looks at political and economic conditions in Cuba under the regime of Cuban President Raúl Castro. It reports on the impact of Castro's policies of economic restructuring, including the expansion of the private sector, and on the decision of U.S. President Barack Obama to re-establish U.S.-Cuban diplomatic relations and attempt to end the U.S. embargo against Cuba. The author expresses the view that democratization will not necessarily accompany economic policy changes.
