Abstract

In this paper the author analyses the legal concepts divided into five groups: concepts that define abstract legal notions; concepts that define concrete objects; concepts that define characteristics or qualities; concepts that define processes and actions; concepts that define the bodies of the European Union. The research has allowed the author to make the following conclusions: - the legal concept is the main element of the legal term; - the first category of concepts is the most numerous, without abstract notions legal matter would not have consistency; - the base element of any terminology is the term defined, through the new approach of Wüster's theory, as a symbol assigned to a professional notion and expressed by linguistic means (words and word combinations used in specific conditions); - the term represents the physical form of the concept whose meaning is actualized in the specialized text. Therefore, the term is characterized by the triad notion/symbol/text; - the concepts are distinguished from each other by various characteristics. Two concepts that have common, but also different features, are similar, but cannot be confounded within the same conceptual system; - disregarding the linguistic aspects of terminology, Wüster's terminographic approach based on the classification of technique into closed areas, proved to be insufficient to establish the exact meaning of the term, but the contribution of the Austrian scientist in the field of terminology remains unquestionable. Some terminographical methods applied to exact sciences are not valid for socio-humanities, while others have to be revised and completed. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]
