Abstract

Aphasia is a language impairment resulting from cerebral damage in persons who have been competent users of their own language. Doctors caring for aphasic patients were among the first who were interested in studying the relationship between brain and language. Although they made detailed clinical and anatomical descriptions, it wasn't until the investigations were made from a linguistic framework that it was possible to explain the language deficits of the patients. Nowadays the linguistic perspective complements the cognitive point of view. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]
