Abstract

"Lázaro Cárdenas" and "Francisco Zarco" water reservoirs are located in central- northern Mexico. In order to improve water balance, transit time and Doppler effect ultrasonic level gauges were placed in both reservoir outlets and in the river interconnecting them. In the first dam outlet two ultrasonic transit time sensors were placed in each of its three tunnels. In the "Nazas" river, communicating dams, two ultrasonic level gauges were settled, both with redundant gauges of level and discharge. In "Francisco Zarco" dam outlet a Doppler current meter was set as well as, in the river bottom, a redundant gauge of level and discharge. This paper describes the selection of each type of gauge, the basics of its technology and how they should be placed and operated. A favourable impact has been achieved in the improvement of water management in the zone. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]
