Abstract

The Tequesquitengo Lake water level in XIX century was about 20 meters below present-day levels and within a time period between 1820 and 1865 the lake level gradually increased and the small town existing on its banks was completely submerged. The study of the lake-aquifer interaction was developed by the author working at the Instituto Mexicano de Tecnología del Agua (IMTA). In this paper an attempt is made to explain what might have happened in the XIX century. After building a scenario representing natural conditions at that time, two alternatives were tested which presumably were the explanation given to this strange event. Pertaining conclusions were obtained. Finally, a third alternative was analyzed in which a possible natural recharge might had come from the deep aquifer as a result of a natural accident.
