Presents some ecological aspects of charophytes and their implications for management of shallow lakes. History of Lake Veluwemeer in the Netherlands, where the charophyte vegetation disappeared coincident with cultural eutrophication but became dominant again after restoration; Main factors that regulate charophyte abundance; Effects that charophytes can have on the ecosystem; Stability of charophyte vegetation and the role of charophytes in restoration projects.
