Abstract

One kind of Al 2 O 3 /Ti(C,N) micro-nano-composite ceramic tool material with acceptable properties was prepared by microwave sintering. Effects of sintering temperature and holding time on densification, mechanical properties and microstructure were studied. The optimal relative density, fracture toughness and Vickers hardness were 98.4±0.30, 6.72±0.28 MPa m 1/2 and 18.42±0.59 GPa, respectively, which were obtained at 1550 °C for 10 min. Compared to the conventional sintering, the sintering temperature and holding time of microwave sintering were reduced by 14% and 89%, respectively. The microwave sintering made the sizes of some particles keep in nano-scale, which leaded to the formation of intragranular structures. The residual stress in the intragranular structures increased the ratio of grain boundary toughness to grain toughness of matrix ( K cb / K cg ), and thus the micro-Al 2 O 3 grains were more inclined to transgranular fracture.
