Abstract
- An essay is presented on the extent of degree antebellum southerners were able to share a belief in the regional stereotypes created by their polemicists and political leaders, many of whom went to great lengths in describing their journeys, and sectional identities. Topics discussed include notions of regional polarization, the southern radicals' fight for independence by the 1850s, and the rise of an American aristocracy that transcended sectional lines.
