Abstract

The article discusses the case of a 62 year old Chinese woman admitted to the emergency department after complaints of shortness of breath with a past medical history of hypertension, insulin-dependent diabetes with multiple end-organ complications and dialysis-dependent end-stage renal failure. She was diagnosed with fluid overload and was found to have HbG-Honolulu which involves the substitution of a negatively charged glutamate of a uncharged glutamine at codon 31 of the a-globin gene.
