Abstract

Coulomb friction model is modified with considering the preliminary distance of rigid bristles and shear stiffness of the contact surface. The degeneration in friction drive and wear behavior induced by nonlinear contact (i.e., impact, intermittent, and fretting) is outlined. Wear tests of LUSMs with V-shape transducers are conducted by a homemade reciprocating apparatus. Results show that chemical inertness, thermotolerance, elasticity as well as surface topography are critical for the contact interface of LUSMs A systematic approach involving, for instance, dynamic contact, friction model, and wear behavior provides new perspectives in improving service performances and promoting practical applications.
