Abstract

The article focuses on the Curtiss C-46 Commando aircraft which was used as a high-altitude heavy hauler during World War II. It discusses the initial design of the C-46 Commando by engineer George A. Page Jr., the replacement of the engines with the Pratt & Whitney 2,000 horsepower (hp) R-2800 Double Wasp engine that gave the aircraft high-altitude capability and some aircraft problems encountered by C-46 crews including fuel leaks, fuel line vapor-locking and carburetor icing.
