Abstract

The article discusses the Alliance for Progress in Latin America to examine the effectiveness of the efforts by the U.S. to promote legitimate government and stability in the region, focusing on the experience of Nicaragua during 1961-1979. Also examined are how the U.S.' interventions to promote economic liberalization and democratic reforms in Nicaragua resulted in the creation of political dynasties in the country, and how the Alliance was used by the elites to promote themselves.
