Abstract
- Objective: To investigate the difference of structural retinal nave fiber layer (RNFL) thickness and ganglion cell layer thickness via using Fourier domain optical coherence tomography device (FD-OCT) in healthy individuals with family history of primary open angle glaucoma (POAG) disease. Material and Method: In this case-control observational study, average and the four quadrant RNFL thickness parameters; average, upper and lower halves of the ganglion cell layer thickness parameters were measured in healthy 30 individuals with family history of POAG disease and in agesex matched healthy individuals without family history of POAG disease via using Topcon 3D FD-OCT device. Wi thin each parameter the statistical difference between two groups was investigated with using Mann-Whitney U test. Results: In each individual group there were 12 men and 18 women with a mean age of 41.40±2.28 year. Average ganglion cell layer thickness was measured as 97.60±0.96 pm in individuals with family history of POAG disease and determined as 104.73±1.55 pm in individuals without family history of POAG disease. Tltis difference was statistically significant (p<0.001). The average RNFL thickness in individuals with family history of POAG disease was 98.13±1.69 pm, while the other group identified as 107.67±1.09 pm and the difference between two groups was also statistically significant (p<0.001). Conclusion: In individuals with family history of glaucoma, structurally thinner retinal nerve fiber layer and the ganglion cell layer were observed. Therefore, in individuals with a family history of glaucoma, glaucoma screening is of crucial importance for the early detection of glaucomatous damage. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]
