Abstract

The paper deals with two Middle West-Iranian lexemes, namely <pcyn'> 'copy, replica' and <p't(y)hštl(y)> 'contract', borrowed into some adjacent languages, such as Classical Armenian and Aramaic. The existing explanations are reviewed, and a new etymology for either word is suggested on the basis of Akkadian source forms, namely šiknu(m) 'original' and šiṭru(m) 'written document' respectively, built in the same Iranian morphological pattern. For the first lexeme the transcription paččīn instead of the commonly accepted *pačēn is proposed, and the phonetics of the range of the loan forms in Hebrew, Old Aramaic and Classical Armenian is explained.
