Abstract

After the emergence of linguistics as modern science at the beginning of the twentieth century, developed a concept very clear about the need to establish linguistics as an autonomous science in the general framework of the social sciences. Not by chance the motto of the First Congress of Linguists, held in The Hague in 1928, was "the autonomy of linguistics" (Jakobson, 1970, p. 12). However, the autonomy of linguistics as a science not isolated from other areas of knowledge. Despite the fundamental role that language plays within the social sciences, one must admit other ways of seeing the linguistic phenomenon and seek to interpret them in terms of interdisciplinary complementarity. In this paper, we try to present some considerations about the contributions to the study of language, theorizing about the functions of language formulated during the mid-twentieth century, both in the area of structural linguistics, drawing on contributions from Roman Jakobson, as in psychology, focusing on studies of Lev Vygotsky. The goal is not to make comparisons and relationships between the theories themselves, but show parallel conceptions that analyze the functions of language recognizing the importance of each of the authors.
