Abstract

The article discusses the launch by the U.S. National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA) of the Magnetospheric Multiscale (MMS) mission to advance understanding of magnetic reconnection. Topics covered include the need for high-resolution measurements to capture the microphysics of reconnection, the reconnection site encountered by the MMS tetrahedrone on the dayside magnetopause and the primary evidence for magnetic dissipation.
